A branch antlered bull elk, something most big game hunters dream about from the time they are kids. This is the story of my first bull elk and it comes after years of hard work. Killing bull elk on public land can be hard but finally I did it. I couldn't have been with a better person either, my good friend Matt Cleary. "The Return" is a story of Matt Cleary and Danny Morrison setting out deep in the mountains in search of a mature bull elk. Is this in the payette or boise national forest?
Glad I stumbled across this video. Enjoyed every second of it. Cant even imagine having birds like that.
Thank you for watching! It was pretty dang special!
Great video but did y’all pick up any of your holes (empty shells)?
We always try to pick up all of our hulls.
I’m surprised being public land there’s not other people all over it! Great video guys
There honestly were but we just kept getting there early!
Wood pigeons are very lovely animals
Im sharing this because it is very affordable & wildly effective. When fishing rock cod I make my own double dropper loop rig with the pink seaguar 60 lb fluoro 6 ft long & a torpedo of whatever weight is needed. Tried something new last 2 trips out of Bodega. Both deep drop trips. When Im forming the dropper loops I feed the tag end through the hook eye of a tsunami holographic black back 6" paddle tail sand eel. I know I know these are surfcasting striper lures, but just try them (the weighted ones) they have a stout enough hook that they will hold a decent ling & they are crazy affordable. A 4 pk is like $5.00. So my rigs cost me $2.50 plus line. I often use mono down deep where it really makes no difference. So I found that even without scent(garlic bloody tuna) & without squid strips these things get smashed before even hitting bottom - lotsa doubles both trips. They ladted all day, rinsed off & ready for next trip although change out of line if beat up by teeth/rocks. I bought 4 pks 2 of the black back & 2 of the green back. I put a black back on the upper & a green back on the lower. 1st trip I was adding squid head & scent 2nd trip I tried them alone & no difference. For comparison those crappy little white fly rigs are more than 5.00 ea & minimally effective camparatively. Also when after sand dabs use another score I tried Ocean Cat glow shrimp with 1/0 hks because the larger hks weed out small dabs which at 300 ft are a hassle. The 1/0 handles petrale sole which you will always find near dabs. Squid strip (sm) on each shrimp & a sm squirt of bloody garlic tuna. These are only 1.20 per 5 shrimp rig so I bought 10. I usually limit 1st honestly. I think those small 6" eel paddle tails trigger bites because the current is surprisingly strong down at the bottom so these things are moving very fast with no jigging. Keep the dropper loop quite sm so you get instant feedback with bites. Planned to try a 12" chinese version of rubber eel (single 2 hk version that I rig myself ) this Dec (24) but 5 trips got rain cancelled in a row. Shit! Next Spring... & my last tip. I do something with my dabs that makes a huge difference in hook setting on lings. I tie a dropper loop very tight to the weight like less than 12". I tie a 6 turn T knot then cut 1 side of the loop for a short branch line less than5" once tied. I snell a lg stout hk & hook live dabs through mouth fwd of nostrils top & bottom lips & no treble you dont need it. We were up to 2 lb weights due to current at 300 ft. I am able to freefall those set ups without tangles since branch is so short & that tight to bottom makes a huge difference from say 1 1/2-2 ft above the weight. Try these save money catch more. Won the pot last trip - 4 keeper lings. 1 big fatty.
That's awesome, thanks for sharing your rigging techniques!
Damn Good one challenging hunt blessings 🤙
Bravo cristian
Man, what a honey hole on public. What kind of camera gear are yall using? Footage is awesome!
Using a canon XA50 on this video, thank you!
Spoonies and Widgeon? Hope you like Liver and onions.
Were all human. Your doing a great job. Awesome videos.
Appreciate that!
What is the click on Matt’s pack that is holding his rifle up called and where can I get one??😅
It’s called a frankenstud sling keeper, pretty sure they have a website.
Down here in Mississippi, some of us have deer meat that cost 150$ a pound. How the price of your elk meat compare?
Idaho?
Just watch a video where this Hunter is claiming that all the bears in Wyoming are eating salmon guess what there's no salmon in Wyoming dude a lot of misinformation out here
Like I've said people that hunt canines and felines are the loneliest form of hunters if you're not going to eat your kill don't kill it
You cooked the shit out of it!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
It looks beautiful out there in the montainus snow.
Dream hunt. Snowy high desert. Nice video, thanks for sharing!
You guys make me wNt to elk hunt. I just have no ide where tonstart or where to go. Im from michigan so im anling way from elk country. We have elk here but no chance to get a tag
Best advice I can give is just go try it! That’s how I’ve learned the most. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from spending time in the mountains.
Great video!!!
Thank you!
First vid I’ve seen of yours…very cool, cameraman’s excellent…Congrats on a great string of hunts, just subscribed!
Thank you, really appreciate that!
What caliber rifle were you using?
7 mm rem. Mag
One of the better hunting videos I’ve seen since the old Zink 247 dvds. Very similar depictions of the hunts. Great video boys
Really appreciate that, those are the videos I grew up watching!
@@AbandonOutdoors You can really tell. This was the first one of yours I’ve ever come across and it’s so well done. Field always did a really job with those and this is that good or better.
You guys earned those bulls. Keep at it while your still young
We’re trying to go as much as possible while we can!
Nothin short of incredible ! Wish I was between twenty and thirty,1st class all the way, rough it is never wrong got to go where the elk are ! Congrats on the elk ! Wow !
Thank you!
No slack shooters there ! What a hunt ! Mod or open cyl
We both use aftermarket chokes, I use a code black patternmaster and Matt uses a kicks, not sure which one. I honestly think aftermarket chokes are worth their weight in gold!
Thanks for Your time !
One other thing I’d like to say ,Being 66 ,I grew up with lead shot, early in alternative shot tyme was terrible,But now because of competition with shot shell manufacture people and the chokes, that I will pattern it’s changed,Over the years I’ve seen enough head ,broken wing, and body shot ducks to know how they react. Although your shooting was superior than any I’ve seen online ,You may have edited a few misses but Your shooting was as good as it gets,I’ve heard about those chokes and I will pattern some next year to see ,I’ve heard pros and cons but in waterfowling always keep an open mind,You guys do it well !
They are tight chokes which I really like because if you miss you miss and if you hit them they die, also what helped us for the high percentage hit rate was that these birds were all pretty dang close. Camera can be deceiving sometimes on distance but I doubt there were many shots over 40 yards.
@@AbandonOutdoors under forty that’s when most people choke,I’ve seen a lot of people shoot right by a duck because of leading a bird,When I see all of this,This Eastern shore ,Maryland hunter wishes he could live forever !
Where did you find the Red Golden? I have one who is retiring this year. Looking for another.
I bought Chester from a friend in South Dakota who’s not really a breeder. They are planning to have another litter in the near future though.
Looks like you guys are the horses. Good job boys.
Sure felt tike it! Thank you!
super video
Fully engaged from start to finish. Can’t wait to see more of this.
Thank you!
Every waterfowlers wet dream!! Unbelievable!
We had the same thing last during the freeze in Kansas out group shot 119 green heads a few pintails and wigeon and 1 hen in 4 days. Will never experience anything like it again probably
That’s awesome!
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Really awesome video! Great footage and good story telling! Those ducks really seemed keyed into that creek, any idea why?
Thank you, really appreciate that. They honestly were keyed in on the creek when the temperatures were really cold because the surrounding lakes had completely frozen over. The rest of the time it was pretty much just traffic, but we were under a lot of birds so it really helped!
I use to bow hunt the panhandle some near me in MT,when younger
I've been hunting these suckers since 1986 and can fairly say I've not experienced 10 hunts like that the whole time. Wow! More importantly, you two are truly enjoying it, not just because of the ducks but also because of your friendship. I have shared that and miss some of those fellas everyday. I really enjoyed watching this. You guys are doing it right. Well done!
It was a neat experience and I think the friendships made in duck hunting is one of the best things about it!
Question for you other duck hunters. Just got a sbe3 What ammo are you guys having good luck with patterning ? I bought some black clouds 3inch. 3shot with a mid range Carlsons choke and they are awful 😂
You know I have a patternmaster in mine and I’m a firm believer in it. I always shoot 3” 2s pretty much the cheapest ammo I can find unless they’re Winchester xperts, I do not like those shells at all.
@ what choke. And mid range or long range ? You’re the second person to recommend those
This is insane
It really was
This is one of the best duck hunting videos I’ve ever seen. And this is real duck hunting!! Just a couple buddies doing it the right way. So sick and tired of seeing these massive groups with massive spreads in pit blinds with heaters and tvs and grills… Dude. Cmon. Commercial duck hunting sucks!! Shout out to the good ol boys who still do it like this. Like us regular joes.
Thank you, I do always try to keep videos real!
I commented already but I had to come back and say this is the greatest duck hunting film I’ve ever seen. And it’s not even close. No idea how this doesn’t have 500k views so far.
Haha thanks again!
Great video. Danny, what is that gun you’re shooting?
Thank you! That is a benelli super black eagle 3.
Great video! I’m a super super newbie bird hunter, I’ve been chasing Mountain Quail here in NW Oregon and finally got one for the first time last weekend! I’m hooked now, getting after em again this weekend.
That’s awesome!
I'd be after Valley Quail, only allowed two Mt. Quail.
@@joepodunk284 Only 2 daily, 6 possession, but I've never shot more than 1 in a day yet. Still just learning this stuff and I'm a poor wing shot haha.
@@joepodunk284 I also don't really see Valley Quail often, but there's plentiful mountain quail in the area around Tillamook State Forest that I usually hunt. Would love to get after them too someday though!
@jacknordick5184 Right on! Ya I've seen valley's off 26 in that same forest, not enough to go after those Lil rockets, I like Grouse they wait for ya,🤣😂👍 Didn't know the "Mountains" were that plentiful givin the 2 bird in the bag limit. Good to know, Thanks 👍
Just curious what you guys were using here for your shot?
We always use 3” 1 1/4 oz. 2s basically the cheapest case or box we can find but we do use aftermarket chokes, I’m a firm believer in the patternmaster.
This is dope 😎🤝
Thanks man!
Great video and hunts. One thing to comment on, there is nothing "red" about a drake mallard's legs. I know this is a term from the old timers and maybe they were color blind. Those legs are as orange as they can be.
I know I was being sarcastic haha inside joke.
Loved watching fin work how old is he? I can tell he is older and there is nothing better then a old dog
He is 10 now, he’s a great old dog!
You can come shoot your limit of ring necks daily here in Alabama haha. Absolutely amazing hunts guys. Congrats 👍🏻
Props to you guys, you found em, got there early and hammered ‘em. You don’t often have them landing too close. You’ll remember those 10 days. 👍
It's definitely one we won't forget!
