Kurzweil K2000/2500 Tutorial - Creating a pad

By special request, a short tutorial on creating a pad. Still experimenting with the production style (and iMovie!) A black synth with backlight is not easy to film! :-) Thanks all for your kind comments on previous videos.

This is my transcription of the first part of the Arp synth solo which starts at 1:45 in The Traitor on the Man-Child album. Second part to come soon!
Herbie Hancock Chameleon synth solo transcription (slow)

My attempt at transcribing the Arp solo on Herbie Hancock's Chameleon (at 4:03 in original track). I slowed it down and it's far from perfect but I think its pretty close in terms of notes for anyone interested in learning it.
Thanks! A quick question. In this example, why did you choose to duplicate the layer instead of simply adding a saw + on the third empty box? If you're not going to choose a different filter or envelope settings for the other layer, than it makes sense to have both oscillators going thru the same filter which is being controlled by the same envelope so that any change you apply would affect the entire sound
Yes could have done that but wanted to show layer duplication. However you are right that it would simplify having one filter settings (I believe on K2600 and after you can either link or have global filter). Duplicating also allows you to choose a slightly different wave form sample to add a bit of variety though (there are 3 variations of each main waveform)
Tip: If you don´t want resonance to distort, use the "pad" parameter on the FRQ page.
Great video¡! Long Live V.A.S.T.! thanx dude(s)
This help me a lot when making my patch on the k2000. Thanks a lot btw.
Man, I hear some noises crackling when you push on the sound in 15+- minutes, is it from synth?
could be some dodgy cables! :-)
What the difference if you just will not choose the SAW in Algorithm, and just use it as Saw from scratch?
The saw of algorithm is mathematically calculated whereas the saw from layer is a sample.
It is the same arpeggiator as in the K2600 (asked above). It'd be worth getting a K2600 while they're still reasonably cheap if you're enjoying the K2500. If you can find one with the sampling option then the Live Mode, the Triple Mode and the KDFX all add up to a huge amount of depth for those who enjoy diving in. Thanks for the tuts, more please...
I bought a new K2000 when I was 21 and really didn't know much about synthesis at the time except some very, very basics. I generally just used it for presets and sampling. It was too much synth for me then. Nearly 30 years later, I might go find it in storage and start noodling around with it again. Hopefully it'll boot. :)
Please come back if you get it to work! It's definitely worth it if you're a music man 😎 also you might want to consider joining the Mastering VAST community, it's the best!
Good video, do you know a page from kurzweil to download some patches? I have a k2000 only with 2000 sounds but I see it has more capacity to full it ,
They're on the official website.
@@yashnu thank you
This is great! Thanks for reminding me of how to get around my Kurzweil K series! I love my Kurzweil K2#00! -- I wish the interface was better, but it's a great synth!
I had this as my main keyboard for many years. I had 2 expanded ones and and one W5. Suprisingly usable and almost never heard of.
Awesome!!
i wonder if this is the same setup as the k2600
This is a very welcome and useful lesson thank you. Please create more like this!
Amazing that 30 years after the making of the synth you still make videos for it. I have no space for it anymore so try to sell it, but videos like this make me want to put it on my desk again.
It will still be overpowered in 30 years, just like the K2000 is still one of the most powerful synth engines today.
@@yashnu It is great, but I play grid controllers these days to save space and make me play better. If I manage to sell the K2000 it will be with a bit of sadness.
@@rayderrich if you sell it, you can get the K2061 when it's out and not be sad :D
I wasn't aware of this feature, even though I've used K2500 for several years now... Short video - but so useful! Thx!
It is in the manual though. They're a must read.
It brings me such joy to know that people still appreciate what an extraordinary instrument the K2000 is. Thanks for sharing your insight with this deep and powerful instrument! Peace.
This is extremely helpful. After 25 years I've decided it's time to actually learn how this thing works. You make it sound really nice. Thank you for the tutorial.
Hello there. Does the Kurzweil K2500/K2500xs allow you to save your sequence internally? How much internal memory does it have for you to save your sequences? Thanks.
Thanks Great Videos just subbed. Now I can start programming my K2500 even more.🎹🎹🎶🎶
That's a fun feature. THx
Sounds good, Mate...🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for the tutorials
Can you do a video of sampling let’s say a violin and layer the synth over it and turn it into a it’s own sound
Also PC3K8
is there a way to get resonance control in algorithm 9? do any of the single input filters do that?
It is easier to just read the manual.
I wish there were more vids on the k2500s like this, specifically the sampling and sound design capabilities...
Good video but the audio level seemed really low
Good video, but your voice is too quiet. I have to turn the clip volume way up - and then remember to turn it back down
This is the best introduction to VAST I have ever seen. Now I understand the basic principles of VAST: it's very similar to a classical subtractive synth, but instead of a fixed unique synth architecture, the user can choose the architecture of the synth (to a certain extent). And the UI has something in common with FM: with that small screen and the unfathomable menus it does not show the global picture of a patch clearly so the user must have it in his head in order to program it. Many thanks.
You build synths inside of it. Subtractive is just one of the many Synthesis architectures it can do. It also has a Multi-Sample Keymap Section and that can be used on its own or be further processed by V.A.S.T. DSP blocks and controlled in real-time.
Cool shit💯
I own a Kurzweil K2000 since release and it sits here under a cover, not being touched much. I always wanted to sound design on it and never got around to it, now with your videos and the knowledge I gathered from other synths I hope to do this finally. Could you make sure you normalize your audio so the videos are about as loud as others? Thanks for your effort of keeping V.A.S.T. alive!
Well done !! 🎹
Thank you! Awesome lesson! It became clear about SAW+.))) Do more lessons. I want to understand about FUN. On simple practical examples it is clearer than just reading the manual. I don't have Kurz yet, but I plan to.
Thanks for that tutorial again
Thanks for the tutorial. Can you show how to can create a lush synth pad?
Great video. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind comment. Yes will try to do more frequent ones. Will probably cover the Shaper and Sync DSPs next.
yesss. would love to see these videos
Very useful. Please do more videos about VAST
Great tutorial, suscribed! more of those please!!
Thank you. Very good video. Please make more videos about VAST
Subbed
Cool!!
I just got the K2700. I have more than three decades of HW/SW synth programing experience, but VAST is like an alien language to me! And there's not a lot of videos out there explaining it. Your video is greatly appreciated. Please make more of these!
Thanks! Will try 😊
@@larsuk9578 Please do! 👍🙂
New one coming soon 😊
YES. I just ordered the k2700 as well and can't find ANY good tutorials on how it works! I had to use bing as an alternative search engine to find this video haha
Does everyone like their 2700?
Thanks for sharing.
I'd love to find a midi controller that could map to key parameters of the k2000?
Midiplus EK490+ dude
Great video!
Was just thinking the other day that I wished I had learned about VAST when I owned the k2000 and voila a new video on it 👍
