Safety Professional in his 40's loses his marbles and decides to switch from cage to motorcycle. This will be a mix of motovlog, travel vlog and talking about my journey into motorcycles. I'm a relative newbie to motorcycles so you get to follow along as I learn and explore life on two wheels. The plan is to get rid of my car after a while, once I figure out solutions to my day to day needs. This is made further complicated by my choice of bikes.
My current ride is a 2020 CB300R. I live in south Texas, so the weather is fairly cooperative in this plan.
I'll talk about gear I like or dislike, observations about things that I found interesting as a rider or at least a rider at my skill level (which obviously changes over time). I'm not going to shy away from things because they seem too basic or mundane. On the other hand, at times I'll get so far into the weeds you'll want to spray me with roundup.

Staying warm on a motorcycle in the winter.
Heated gear is nice, but expensive and annoying for shorter rides. Here is how a daily rider stays warm running errands and commuting to work in chilly temps.
NOTE: Does not apply if “chilly” is much below freezing, go get heated gear and high end riding clothes for those temps.

Some thoughts and questions regarding slipper clutches on motorcycles, and a brief description of what they do for folks who are unaware. Wind breaking handguards can make a huge difference in your riding comfort in the winter. Instead of having frozen hands after a half hour ride, even with winter riding gloves, I'm comfy wearing my mid to lighter weight gloves. The NEW Triumph Speed 400 - Ultimate Small Displacement Retro motorcycle?
Thanks for the video. BTW, How well does your windscreen work? Any buffeting? Im planning on installing one like yours in my bike…
I get some at my head but if I tuck down at all it goes away, if I sit more upright it goes away… just my luck that my normal position is a bit off for the height. Not enough I care. I guess it’s telling that I haven’t taken it off yet this year. I left it on once it warmed up to help with the bugs and just never took it off.
Just ordered a white one! Stoked to get my first Shoei. Is it more of a flat white or gloss? All the pics online look like a flat white
I would call it gloss, but it’s not a super polished and high gloss finish. You don’t glow. Lol
Yeah I love mine. I wanted the silver one like you have, but they were out..so I got the green, matches my bike. There is no cooler jacket in very hot weather.
Yup. Great blend of quality, cool, style and price. Add a back pad and it’s about as good as it gets for normal riding in hot weather.
Are you in top for the faster bits of the video 7k at 55mph doesn't sound right...
No, that would be 5th, maybe even 4th. I can’t recall the exact split on those. My brain is blanking right now but 54 is 6k in 6th if I am remembering right.
@@Remymoto thanks for coming back to me, much appreciated. 👍
I bought this bike last week and it's been 8 days now, red one. I'm from India. The brand new chain had several kinks in it and the factory setting had too much lash in it. Asked the dealership to tighten it a bit which the did rather reluctantly, saying it's all good and they only do that during the first service. But it then felt over tightened and the wheel would hardly move when turned by hand. First thing I ordered online was a paddock stand and sat with my bike today as soon it got delivered. My user manual said 1 to 2.2 inch slack but the chain hits the slider on the swingarm before that. For now I've given it a generous slack but couldn't check it due to rains. Oiled it with 90 gear oil generously and rotated the wheels, it just goes less than a quarter turn after I give it a hard spin. So obviously things are not ok. Adjusting the balance on both sides took me 45 mins and my knees were screaming in agony. Not as simple as I had hoped. The kinks still remain but not as stiff. Assuming that brand new O-ring chains may kink due to the friction with the rubber rings, my first experience with o ring chains. Should check how things look tomo but more rain is predicted. No mention of any engine run-in period anywhere in my manual.
The chain is definitely not a feature on this bike. After the first adjustment or two you will get faster at it. But it’s still a cheap chain and sprocket.
@@Remymoto I've done my 1st service yday after 1000 km and many kinks are still present. Dealership tightened it nicely but now the chain wear marking has already approached the red zone. They are assuring me that it will last 10k plus km despite that wear zone. Keeling my fingers crossed for now. I double coated the bike with TW ceramic spray after A24 hour curing time and it looks awesome in its pearl red and black. Looking forward to more rides now. But the chain is a constant irritant.
Gud information
Man, how long was that traffic light? Took up one third of the video.
Is this a Ms07 video
"I don't need high speed. I need enough speed" love it
Great honest review!!! 👏 "I don't need more speed, I need enough speed" well said! 🙏
First time level replacement..I "adjusted" my clutch so well it won't go into gear from -N- without shutting off. New to this..brake level was easy and quick though.
I’m trying to find it in Japan and it’s proving to be difficult. I might have to blindly order. Was the sizing accurate?
Eh, if you follow their chart yes. If you think it’s your normal size, no.
@@Remymoto their chart worked great. 👍 love the jacket. It’s 40° here 🥵
Thank you for this video; instructive. Have a great day.
I like your wind screen!👍
Just get the 650r bro…
Sure, u have bigger/faster... But what u need is ~300cc & ~300lbs wet. My KLX230SM is so much fun. I think it only makes ~20hp or so but at 296lb wet is stupid fun to rev thru all 6 gears & putt around town. Even a little air-cooled 230 can be surprisingly sporty.
No palm sliders, no thanks. Check out knox gloves.
no more video's? whats up?
Not enough time and I am giving what YT time I have to my other channel. @bulletsnbrass which is not really going anywhere either but I am broadening the content a bit and gonna see what works.

I’d have to say my favorite warm/summer gloves are my current ones - Dainese 4 Stroke 2. Top tier protection, great quality leather, and broke in fantastic. Only downside is I couldn’t get them in the color way that I really wanted.
hello, at about 6 min into the video, you're saying the 3 first gears are short if I understood this properly and you state you would like the RPM to be lower by around 1500 revs compared to the actual RPM while cruising at 75 mph and then you add that it is just a downside for a small displacement engine in order to meet very strict emission norms. Actually, I don't understand why would this bike be "more polluting" if it had a piston stroke of for example 80mm or 85mm instead of 63mm. With a longer piston stroke it could reach and maintain the speed of 70-75 mph with 1000 RPM lower than currently and I don't see why would this bike become "more polluting". Thank you for an answer. Ride safely :)
I don’t do engine design so I have no idea why they made the specific design they did. Keep in mind, this engine gets used in a variety of bikes. It is also an existing design that somewhat predates the relatively strict rules we have now and coming up. I don’t know if they made any significant engine changes with the new version.
Thank you!
I bought a 2024 cb300r 0 miles less than a month ago, I love it! can't be any happier honestly. Already put 2000 miles on it 😆
Great video! What height are you?
it's no touring bike, but I think you can cover any distance as long as you don't rev the engine to the red zone and keep the maintenance as it should be. I know that 60-65 mph is an acceptable cruising speed for this bike. I find this motorcycle very interesting - very light, manouverable, I only regret a little bit it has a slightly short piston stroke, some 70-75mm instead of 63 would make it rev less at cruising speed and with such a light weight it would be still responsive enough to drive across traffic in cities. Ride safely !
I got my smx 6 the other day (got them because i wanted to protect ym ankle after the ortho surgery and new hardware i just got) and these boots are the real deal
Even with the audio issues, a very informative review. Thanks!
It seems like you are trying to give yourself affirmation to still like the bike. you say you don’t need anything more. No one ‘needs’ any motorcycle. Being practical isn’t why most of us ride. We get them because we want them, and some bikes allow one to experience certain aspects of riding that bikes like the cb300 can’t. It’s ok to not be practical. Now that you have some experience, I suggest try another bike. And preferably an impractical bike. And not just a ride around the parking lot. Maybe rent one, and the work on your ‘what’s next’ list - cheera
I've ridden a number of other bikes, all of which have significantly (2x or even 3x) more power. The key is that for my needs they are fun, but not what I would want to have. Certainly if money is no object I can think of a lot of bikes that I'd prefer to stack up and pick from for a particular ride, but money is part of the equation. When you're shopping for a daily ride, when there's no backup choice, sometimes practical is a key part of that decision. If I'm just going for a fun ride the list of bikes I'd rather be on is almost endless. If I'm only running errands in town there are probably a hundred or so if I consider older choices. If it's only my commute to work, back to thousands. But a bike that I'm happy with for all three and that's easy on the budget for upkeep? That's tougher. There are other choices, and if you prioritize it differently among those four things it can easily swing toward bikes with more power. For example, if I owned an e-bike setup for running errands around town I'd probably go with something better on the highway and put more focus on my commute and the casual fun rides I prefer. That's more a 650 class machine, but now we're roughly doubling all costs for relatively minor gain in my situation. Would be be a bit more fun sometimes on my commute? Sure. But plenty of time I'm dealing with traffic or weather anyway and wouldn't ride any more "fun". The real answer for an impractical choice is simple. If I decide I really want something where the focus is on fun, I'll cough up the money for something, but I'll probably keep the CB300R or whatever replaces it in the same role. It's not totally unique, it's just the one I thought fit me the best at the time. I doubt I'll buy another one, variety's nice, after all. Maybe at that point my needs will change and I'll be more willing to prioritize impractical to get more of the fun stuff in a bike.
I have the CB650 and most of what you say applies to it as well, super fun bike to put around on. Only difference is power and weight really. Honestly, I could do 80% of the same riding on a CB300.
I leanred to ride on my XSR 125. Still on that bike, 1.5 years in, 3.5k miles in, spending my days trying to decide what my next bike would be but never pulling the trigger. Reality is it covers my needs, but I would like a little more power. I have a very relaxed riding style, at almost 50 switching to bikes I'm very weary of the dangers, but I'd like to be able to get up to speed swiftly without having to push the engine, just using a bit of torque, and also be able to do the occasional highway ride with no dramas. The CB300R would be perfect and so would be the new Eliminator 500. I'm also leaning towards the XSR 700 for continuity, might be able to trade in mine as well for that one. Reality is, the faster the bike the faster you'll go but, provided that involves just the "getting up to speed" part and not getting carried away it shouldn't be an issue. At the end of the day, getting on a bigger bike you gain basically perfromance, at the expense of soooo much else, purchase cost, fuel cost, maintenance cost, tax cost, insurance cost, weight. And so one would do well to draw a line and go for the performance they would actually enjoy, and no more than that that that comes with all the added drawbacks. For me the Eliminator would be the sensible choice, but the XSR makes a better sound and I value that quite a bit, whether riding a bike or driving a car, it's part of enjoying the bike life. You're making some great points in this video and get people thinking.
I recently had mine broken and I gotta say... it does wonders for higher speed stability... once you get around 80kmh (50mph) you can absolutely tell the difference in regards to how stable the bike feels.
At this point I feel like it helps the bike, since it adds more of a slip stream around my body. But I also feel like it messes up the airflow for my head a bit. Fair trade in cooler weather and for the bugs, which is why I will leave it on for a while longer. The handguards I put on for the winter just came off though. Gonna be 90 on the way home today.
@@Remymoto I never had any issues with messing up airflow to my helmet, only if I decide to crouch down a little bit or lean more forward than I otherwise would, then my helmet might clip the stream of air coming off of it.
I got a good laugh today. It was lightly raining on my way in, not enough to soak me, but enough to wet my jacket anywhere it got hit. I had a very sharp line between my chest and stomach where the windscreen was keeping my lower torso dry and the rest of me wasn't protected. I took the jacket off and went to hang it up and did a double take.
@@Remymoto nice
whenever me and the boys do a "relaxing" ride it never ends well 😂 all jokes aside were responsible i swear. nice bike aswell
How is the hand vibration around town? 30 to 50 mph. Lighter weight and single cylinder, create too much vibration? I've had hand vibration problems in the past. Thanks for the good real world perspective. Good details.
If you're sensitive, it's not gonna be great, but it's a SMALL single, lol. So it's not bad. You definitely notice it, but it's not rough. It's not like one of the larger singles where you feel like you're holding a paint shaker.
@@Remymoto I see. Thanks. Also, what do you mean by packpack throws you around. Backpack is slang for a bike part, or an actual backpack, like NorthFace backapack?
@@Frip36 Actual backpack. The one I use a lot around town is a bit too wide and catches wind on either side of my back rather than fitting into my slipstream.
Does it vibrate your hands a lot? I've got numb hands cuz my scoot vibrated too much. Thanks.
I have been paying attention to it for the past week and I would say the vibes are more in my feet than my hands. I wear pretty hard sole riding boots not soft rubber stuff, so I do feel it more than if I had on softest sole stuff.
@@Remymoto Thanks.
What is that thing sticking up? Camera? Or gear indicator?
That would be the 360 camera

CBR300R has been discontinued for now.
But there are tons of them out there. :) At least locally there are.
Great jacket for the price.
It really is!
Anyone experienced colour change from exhaust header ? Mine changed to bluish purple from metalic brow within 1000 miles 😢. Id appreciate if someone shed some light on the above issue.
It's the metal being heated. It's normal I think
yeah that’s normal
Hey! I've watched a few of your videos about this bike and I just signed the paperwork on my own CB300R today to have it delivered tomorrow! It will be my first bike and I feel like I made a pretty good choice even though I'm a tall/bigger guy. I wanted a bike that wasn't too big for a first bike, or too powerful but still could comfortably get me to work and back and the grocery store. Maybe once I am more comfortable I can do some longer hauls on comfortable/slower state backroads. Possibly a few longer highway trips a couple times to see my folks once I'm really confident. I considered the windscreen pretty much essential along with my safety gear because I'm over six feet tall. I feel like that was a good call after watching your review of it and how it affects the ride. Looking forward to learning all about this bike, gonna be practicing a lot in a parking lot and the residential cul de sac roads before I take my endorsement test later this month.
Enjoy! Let us know how the windscreen goes, they can really depends on your height and exactly which one you have. Mine keeps the wind off my chest but does buffet my helmet a bit more. I also get a bit more breeze up under the helmet chin, but not bad and in the winter you have to wear a gator anyway so... Just remember, once you actually wanna GO, don't be shy about the gas, just be smooth. The engine is just fine at higher RPM's, it just feels a little weird to be doing it at first. The bike's smoother at low speed with more gas and the friction zone, don't mind the engine noise. I'm about to take my screen off, and the handguards. We're warm enough now that I want that extra airflow and smoother air on my helmet for fun rides. The occasional still chilly morning is not that bad anymore.
CB300r! good bike
were you balancing the movement on the left side with the right? I noticed it never showed you doing the same to the right-hand side... if you only ever do the left you are more likely to tilt the chain to an angle and cause increased wear and fatigue... undoing the reason why you are tightening it in the first place.
Yup, kept it straight.
Aye man I have a 2023 cb300r all I gotta say is. If ur bitchin about the 30 degree wind hitting you… uhhhh don’t ride ur bike in 30 degree weather lmao
I will be sure to let my employer know you told me to not go to work if it’s cold out. I am sure that will cover it and they’ll even pay me for the day.
I bought my 2015 cbr 300 new off the showroom. Im never selling the bike. My girlfriend is taking the safety course and it will be her bike to ride with me. Perfect!
Hey, could you suggest from where I can order the sliders online?
I've only seen their stuff sold direct on their site.
What size are the gloves you are wearing?
All my gloves are XL, whether REV'IT!, AlpineStars or Joe Rocket. I'm kind of in between L and XL generally and since I'd rather not be jamming a finger or two... On a pure leather glove I could do L and just suck it up until the glove stretched a bit.
How well is this holding up? The reviews weren't to good for everyday use. Any issues?
I stopped using it after about two months, I switched to the Nelson Rigg commuter pack. But, until then, no issues. I still have it and if I needed a bag for really wet weather I'd grab it and strap it on with the rokstraps.
tip for high mileage - low maintenance on honda's... change engine oil EVERY 3 thousand miles... dont hav to do filter every time..dont over maintain it..dont keep checking valves etc..just change that oil.. small amounts of wd40 sprayed where its needed.. wipe with oily rag in winter.. top of forklegs etc.. coppergrease the nuts when you change pads..wd40 the lower shock mount bolt .. sidestand.. keyholes etc.. she will last Forever..
Riding is so much more fun when you can use most of the bikes potential and push it hard without going to jail.
