Workstation Build: Makings of a Monster
Building a monster sworkstation, over the top build not recommended for anything practical, case modifications had to be made in order to make everything fit properly.
It was a fun build overall, built mostly with used components or the stuff that I had salvaged from other machines scattered around the house.

Chia plotting: QNAP TL-D1600S SAS expander mod (PART 1)
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
First look at the insides of the QNAP TL-D1600S with a purpose of adding a SAS expander to it in order to make it easier to connect to the SAS host with just one cable and be able to daisy chain multiple of these. These units feature toolless drive trays which makes them perfect for connecting them to the host plotting machine and then easily transferring drives once they are filled.

2:47 What is the grey cable that looks like usb2.0? what is it for?
Its called a SGPIO cable usually used to light up enclosure activity LED's but can be used for other things as well.
@@TekJumble Thank you so much for replying! I have a SFF-8654 to 8x SATA cable. But it also has two of those SGPIO connectors... So I don`t have to do with it anything? Thanks again!
@@tanakaobi SGPIO cable does not need to be connected.

HI
You don't have to plug the pci card to a pcie slot?
No need, it does not communicate to the cpu or the rest of the system it just expands lanes, pcie slot is only there for power.
Have you recited a video of connecting the QNAP TS-h973AX with the TS D1600S?
Not sure what you are asking me.
can you list the components or provide a partpicker link?
A wealth of information, many props.
Quick question: would the qnap box work fine if i used a non qnap lsi card (using all 4 cables). There’s nothing in the box itself that’s proprietary?
It will work with any and all recent sas hba's.
Sweet thanks for confirming. Going to use it for a NAS build with a USFF 1L pc.
@@MetalPhreakAU UUU real nice, its gonna be mega low power when idle.
When is the next video coming out
Soon™, for the past like 4 months i have been working on 2 client projects and have literally 0 free time.
Was everything detected properly on the computer side for this mod? Never saw a follow up video on it
Yup all worked as expected all 16 bays detected properly using a single cable
Thank you for the video. One question if you don't mind, how do you get the plotting orders (from friends or websites..)? And are they profitable? I am interested in this idea.
I do all of it locally, internet speeds are just too low for transferring hundreds of terabytes worth of data.
thanks for sharing. you note that 4 GPU 2080Ti in the T630. But in the end you said that you need the SECOND GPU to farm/ what GPU are you using to farm 50000 C8 Gigahorse plots?
I farm on a separate machine t630 is just a plotter, i have a single A5000 split between a few VMs and it does the job with little effort on average 6 second partials
Your set up is looking good.
My jaw dropped to the floor after seeing this. That is a dream.
It was my dream build for a very long time, finally the time and price of components was right so i sprung into action.
@@TekJumble thats awesome! Definitely subscribing to show support for the project
Nice , thank you
Forgive me but what the heck is this mod for?
Its explained in the video, the box doesn't have the expander on its own, it requires all 4 connectors to be plugged in order to access all 16 drives, this allows me to connect just 1 cable and use all 16 drives while also giving me the ability to daisy chain boxes to one another or link one box to multiple hosts.
@@TekJumble Is the overall link speed effected? What HBA are you using?
@@pattygq Case connectors have 6 Gb/s links while the expander that I installed has all 12 Gb/s links (2 of which can be used to connect to HBA) so no there is no bandwidth degradation but that is besides the point because this case will house only HDD's which would not even be able to saturate 1 12Gb/s link. I am using LSI SAS 9300-16E
WOW very nice server room.
Thanks man !
You lost me at Chia :DDD
What do you mean ?
Nice content! I am interesting in learning how to test this type of monster PCs using Linux.
Its coming, been testing few different distros, finally decided to go with Proxmox due to its flexibility and the ability to quickly switch platforms when needed. I have a few practical tests that I want to do on it.
Thanks for sharing this, looks a little bit like my basement :D But very well done, congrats!
Thanks, yeah this room is above the basement.
The archiver
Well now I have to up my game! Dude this is a SICK build. Now I know what you had been waiting on and Im glad it showed up without major headaches like you have hit in past!
I have had a few days with it now testing different things, this board has some quirks to it, for one re-drivers that are on the board aren't really re-driving all that well out of the box, default values simply do not cut it, I have spent a better part of one day just tunning that and still there is an occasional PCIE signal integrity error also power seams to be an issue, well transient load issue that is especially when GPU's are fluctuating between lower power states to higher power states if you have a constant load then there are no issues but that transient load is a problem, setting a static frequency fixes everything. Other then that it has been pretty smooth build.
At least the GPU's didn't come from the HEN farm this time. But I did re-paste and re-pad all of them just to be sure.
in the next bull run how much will it cost Chia your opinion?
Really got no clue, but I HOPE 250 ish range if not well there is always the next bull run. :D.
@@TekJumble thanks for the answer, you will sell at the price of $250
No, I am in crypto for money but I will probably not sell at 250 that is when I will be thinking of my strategy going forward. I have other ways of earning money and I am not in any sort of rush.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
YAY wen multipath IO video!!
When I figure it out myself :D.
Destroying the retaining teeth on my external SAS cables (and sfp+) is like a sidequest I am on. Great video!
Yeah I remove those on all my cables because I tend to break those plastic pull tabs and end up having to pry the connector open in order to pull it out :D
@@TekJumble are you even living if you dont need pliers behind your racks?
@@DigitalSpaceport Exactly 😂 !
Hi I have dount can we connect GPU to work station with similar HBA card? Thanks
These are SAS HBA's. You need two things in order to connect a GPU to your machine, first one being a PCIe adapter/splitter card and the second one being a motherboard that supports bifurcation, if you only want to connect one GPU then you just need PCIe adapter there is no need for bifurcation support on the motherboard. You also have an option to get a PCIe adapter card with a switch chip in that case you also do not need bifurcation support. Note that SAS cables may work with PCIe but its not guaranteed.
My requirements is I have 2 work station with 4 gpu in each, I want to inter connect 2 with sas cable possible?
@@Prakash_Farmers_Son_Farmer Hmm you can't interconnect them its not how PCIE connection works, you can have an externally mounted GPU's using PCIE adapters and PCIE risers that have support for SFF-8643, SFF-8611 or SFF-8654 cables if you are using PCIE4.0 or PCIE5.0 you will need a PCIE adapter with redrivers or you will have unstable connection
what compression level plots are you using c8 ??
Yup its C8
how much was the cost of this setup ?
We don’t talk about that :) . Kidding, probably north of 60k .
This was great to see. Thanks for sharing. Those larger drives cost a lot more, but you manage to fit a lot of net space into a single rack, which is great. I'm sure it really cuts down on noise and power.
Thanks man. Yeah the farm is pretty efficient as it is currently I do not know what I could do better apart from replacing them 12TB drives with larger ones. Currently on the lookout for a white rack to compliment the black one hope I can find something locally.
Did you move into an old commercial space? This is AWESOME
Nah its in the house above what used to be a basement but now I have converted it it to this nerd garden :D
Good setup man
This is a perfect nerd nest
Its getting there, its getting there. This place needs a white rack to compliment the black one. Schrack and Rittal make some white rack's, I need to get my hands on one.
I'm impatient for the next part.
Same here :D, parts are ordered so its just a matter of time before they arrive.
I'd like to see how's gonna look after modification. Staying tuned. 🤙
Did you test it with Arch Linux I mean you said you wanted to go fast here right??? 😜💚 Nice video!
Yup need to try Arch there is something weird going on definitely with these AWS instance i just need to figure out what
