My First UA-cam Video: The Mopar D150 Build
I have a 94 dodge ram 2wd with a 5.9 magnum. I want to swap it into an 81 c10. I’m fine with going carb route. Will that be possible?
@mikesnedeger8694 Should be, I'm not sure what motor mounts they have on them though so you may have to buy some or fabricate something. Another thing too is the transmission I'm not sure what your planning on running as far as transmission but if you run a chevy transmission you will probably have to get an adapter. But if you go with a dodge transmission you will probably have to get a driveshaft for it.
Keep these videos coming man...doing a similar build
@Willy-y1j will do, thanks for checking out the channel! hopefully I can get another video up soon!
Stock magnum cams have 116 lsa. Currently having one reground as close to 260/268 purple shaft specs as they can get.
@magiclydelicious1 heck yea man, let us know how it turns out👍 anything is better than stock grind lol
My 2000 ram has a distributor on the 5.9 magnum
I’ve been looking for some long tubes for my 5.9 magnum. Where you get yours ?
@pedrohurtado1217 I cant remember exactly but I'm pretty sure I just searched headers for an 86 d150 and some off brand company had them pretty cheap. I think they were actually for an la 360 but they worked fine for the magnum. If I can find where I actually got them I'll definitly let ya know but I'm not sure honestly lol
ok now do a points distributor and carb with a 90's magnum lol.
@TheJCompound My truck would never run again😂 I still struggle at times with the electronic distributor lol
I realy enjoy your video updates im considering the hughes intake kit .. remove that dang kegger lol.. just for me in Canada its very expensive by time i pay duty an shipping an taxes bout 1100 bucks all said an done .. so i really like to know how much of difference it really makes before i spend .. plus i wanna get the cam from them too thats is same as yours cam.. I really like your dash too looks sweet !! Well done 👍
Where do I find the intakes that are knock off
Sorry for the late response. I think amazon actually sells one. Just make sure that the intake bolts go straight down and are not pointed sideways. The magnum engines intake bolts are straight down unlike the LA series engines sideways bolts. But you should just be able to look up a dual plane airgap intake for a magnum and find one from whichever company you prefer. I personally have never bought one but I have seen them on some sites.
I need a single plane for turbo so bad
@davecaresforyou7606 I'm not to sure about single plane intakes for the magnums I have never looked for one of them aside from the m1 intake for fuel injected magnums but those can be pretty pricey lol
Can you provide the part number of your ICU..??..thanks
Not sure what the part number is but the name of the ecu is holley hp.
Whats the intake part number?
@@417jackrabbit the carburated intake or the efi intake?
@RedlineMopar carb intake...i been chevy guy know not much of mopar
@@417jackrabbit It's an edelbrock airgap 7577 is the part number that's stamped on the top of it.
Just reverse the carb to use the cable, unless the fuel lines are short and supposed to be on the right side. Also unless that carb for some reason isn't symmetrical to be reversed. Oh well just my 2 cents maybe..
@DarklordEntertainment it's a throttlebody and the cable has to have the right mounting tab to fit the bracket on the side of the throttlebody so the cable can work right also the throttlebody can only go on one way lol. Appreciate the input though!
@@RedlineMopar Sorry there but thinking you had the Edelbrock intake and carb and just didn't remember them having a notch in them for correctness. I did forget to include that I meant it was a short term solution, though it seems there is no way with a notch and that cable.. Did think that truck sounds like a beast though with that cam. My only wish is to cam out something odd and make it do those almost seconds it feels and sounds like the engine isn't even running when idle kind of builds...Maybe one of these days eh...Wish you well on the rest of the upgrades.
@DarklordEntertainment Yea i failed to mention that was my old set up in the video lol but putting the new fuel cell in now!
I've had them all , and I like my 440s lots of torture with a stock motor and gets good gas mileage, and will run a cupple hundred thousand miles.
@timbamler8964 Yea they are all good options. I have a 440 collecting dust right now, hopefully in the future I can throw it in another project car or truck. Definitly will do a build series on that as well whenever the time comes.
I have a 440 in a 95 pick up.. it's very Stout!
Stock magnum head flows around 217 cfm i believe , check out charles servedio he'll show ya how to port these heads to flow 270+. Ive also got the 20-746-9 cam in my magnum and it chops pretty good with only a 114 lsa. What converter ya runnin ?
@nickstephens2913 Thanks fpr the info! I'll definitly look into Charles servedio. It's running an advertised 3000 stall converter rn but honestly it would probably be better with a lower stall although it really only flashes at around 2600-2800
Its looking good , really coming along.. is this a new cam you have in this engine from hughes or is it the same came from hughes you have had it in ? Love the chop plus some extra horsepower be nice.. do you have the cam specs of the cam your running in it now ?
@DarrensTruckzs This is the same cam it has had in it, these are just some old videos before i started the efi conversion process. This cam is a 214-218 split duration cam with .532 int. And .539 exh lift and a 109lsa the part number for this cam is in the description of the video. You can find it at hughes engines website.
@@RedlineMopar ok right on thanks appreciate, 👍
I have a cammed thermoquad 5.9 magnum in my 51 dodge kingsway , I was running 3.73 and a 3400 stall , it really hooks up but I think it would even be better with a 2800 .
@Ratridez Yea this truck has a 3000 stall but it would prolly be better with a 2500, the cam is just a 214-218 split duration with a tight lsa.
Atta boy don't let fear and common sense hold your back 😁👍
Sounds good
Hey bro!! I follow ya with every vidoe.. i appreciate your input and knowledge!! I have the same throttle body only it factory as my truck is a third gen 5.9 magnum .. but very much trying to decide if i seao intake an go to 4 barrel of stay with fuel imjection.. anyways .. you do very good informational vidoes etc. 👌👍 happy thanks giving too by the way !! 💯👍✅
@DarrensTruckzs Thanks! Personally I would keep the factory fuel injection on your truck. I am gonna be doing a series on my dad's 75 duster that we are putting a 5.9 magnum in soon and it will be all stock other than a cam but we will be tuning it with hptuners using the stock efi so that will be a very budget minded build and should have alot of information that would apply to your current setup. Thanks for the support!
@@RedlineMopar Right o …i hear ya …an i look forward to this type video soon as you say !!
Rev limiter
The off brand airgaps can work with the AC you have to cut part of the bracket for the ac and only use 3 bolts to hold it in place.
How much boost you plannin on ?
@nickstephens2913 I'm gonna start out kindve low probably 8ibs or so but I'd like to end up around 15ibs
Im really enjoyin your videos , im interested to see an know how you like the new intake kit from hughes ??! As i seriously considering buying the same kit but will cost me bit more as i from Ontario Canada .. i have 2002 dodge ram 2wd regular cab short box third gen and has the kegger and id like to delete the kegger an go with that hughes intake .. any info an such you can give me i appreciate.. ive got headers an decent cam an such already in it .. with 392 gears came in the truck new an i got the 46re already built with torque converter to match cam specs an stage 2 shift kit an all.. an is tuned by Hp tuners as well.. Ive taken lotta weight outa it but still has stock interior.. runs well in quarter mile ,jus not happy with this kegger . Keep them videos coming let me kniw on the intake what ya think of it !! Cheers man 👍
@DarrensTruckzs I will definitly let you know my thoughts on it when I get it running again! The kegger really does kill alot of power in the upper rpm range, not sure what your cam specs are but I will probably doing a video in the future talking about intakes and cams and the correlation between them that may be helpful. I will also be doing a video series in the future about swapping a 5.9 magnum into a duster that will be keeping the kegger and it has the same cam as my d150 so it will be interesting to see the difference. Hopefully we can do some dyno comparisons when its all done. The duster will also be using the factory ecm along with hptuners. Thanks for the support!
@@RedlineMopar ok thats great .. thanks for the response back ,, i look forward to your future videos for sure 👍
I have an 86 d150 as well, mine is completely stock. I'd like to get rid of the factory lean burn system. Do you have experience with the proform mopar electronic ignition kits? I see a lot of hate on them, but I'm just trying to get away from the factory computer. I would also like to replace the 2bbl carb and intake with a 4bbl. Do you have a suggestion for the most economical way to do this? I've been recommended to use edelbrock but maybe there's a better option? I'm not trying to race my pickup, just want to increase reliability and add a bit of power. Thanks for your videos, I subscribed
@tehlump Hey, thanks for the sub and unfortunately I am not familiar with the proform kits. Although if your engine is a 5.9 magnum then I would recommend checking out the video called CARB on a 5.9 magnum! (Was it WORTH IT?) I talk a little bit in there about what I did to get mine running without the factory ecm and a 4bbl holley. If you have the stock la 318 or 360 in yours you should be able to do the same as well although the intake bolt patterns are different between the magnum and la engines. There should be alot of cheap intake options to do a 4bbl for a 360 la though. I would recommend getting a holley 750 or 650 along with a dual plane intake and run an msd box with it. I just got my holley 750 off of fb marketplace and My msd box from a friend. You could definitly do it for under $1000 though if it is the la style and if it is a magnum engine you could probably do the same with the Chinese version of the 4bbl intake. I personally used the edelbrock on mine.
@@RedlineMopar Thanks for the info! I'm still trying to come up with the best plan forward. Luckily I have time as my stock setup runs great. I wanted to offer a quick suggestion, I think your videos would come across better if you would bring the camera up to eye/face level vs talking to the camera from such a low angle. Thanks for putting out the info you do, keep it up!
@@tehlump will do thanks for the input!
N.C. ?
I have a 88 Dakota. The biggest problem I have is the poor design radiator in them. It gets warm and that top plastic tank falls apart. Wish they had more options for that.
As long as you get away from that ridicules power robbing barrel keg stock manifold it will make way more power . I'm running a 360 magnum , shorty headers , comp cam , amazon air gap , 27 thou head gaskets topped of with a thermoquad from a 440 and it just rocks . I've been beating it for 4 years now and never missed a beat .
Hello "RedlineMopar" I saw that in your channel have some problems. For these problems your channel is not much growing. Not getting much engagement. If you can solve these problems, Your channel will get more engagement. If you can give me permission I can tell to you about these problems. Can I tell here or email? Okay?
That was an OUTSTANDING analysis and commentary. We have a G3 Hemi swap project going on right now on our 68 Barracuda. You hit the highlights and nailed it on the comparisons.
@blakesmusclecar Thanks for the support! That sounds like a pretty sweet project, I'll be sure to check out your channel as well!
Put the 340 back in the demon, make it right
Decided I am gonna put a hemi in it not sure if it will be an eagle 5.7 or a 392 but it's definitly getting a hemi
440 in the Demon(supercharged); 360(twin turbos) in the truck...imho! 😁🤪😎
Decided the truck is getting a 76mm single turbo with the 5.9 magnum and the demon is gonna get a hemi either an eagle 5.7 or a 392.
Love the custom dash, it looks great! If you made 259 at the wheel then its likely making somewhere around 340-370 at the crank! The old racer guys I bought my Satellite from told me that most old school V8 automatic cars with solid rear axles lose about 75-100 HP from the crank to the wheels and this is often true. I can't remember if you are running that big 4 speed overdrive trans but it soaks up a lot of power on the way to the wheels. Way more than my little 904 Torqueflite. Tim at Hughes Engines also told me my combo with the SER1418ALN10 cam should be good for about 400-430 at the crank. I also blew both head gaskets at once on my 5.9 running too much timing very shortly after putting it in the car. I had just beat one of those little Mercedes AMG coupes by a few car lengths and it made a huge BOOM sound when I let off the gas like a shotgun. After that it huffed like someone playing a jug in an old bluegrass band. I drove it back home and it took me about a week to put new Fel Pro gaskets on it and I just sanded down the rough spots where the gaskets blew without even bothering to surface them and its been running great for years since then (knock on wood).
Great to hear from you again! I'm sure the headgasket on mine had something to do with my tuning as well, lol. It was running a little lean that day on the dyno, and I'm sure more power could be had with a tuning adjustment. Hopefully, going efi will make things a little easier, especially once boost gets involved. I'm currently waiting on some parts from holley, but once they come in, I am gonna tear the engine down and make follow up video and then begin reassembly with efi stuff. Thanks for watching!
Got any updates for us on the truck? Hope things are going well!
Yea, I'll definitely make some more videos soon. Life has been pretty busy since the last videos, but I'm about to graduate from college, so I should have a lot more time. Thanks for the support!
What did you use for motor mounts? I’m currently in the process
Well I would guess that you didn't go with Hemi because of cost I mean you could build a few 360s for the cost of a Hemi
I put big cam in a 5.9 years ago for mud truck. It's a snappy engine
I am currently building a 99 360 magnum for my 86 d150 and I’ve been reading where the driver side engine mount it different than the la blocks. How or what did you do to get yours to fit? Thank you very much.
From what I can remember it was just a couple washers that I added as a shim to one of the ears where the factory mount on the truck mounts to the engine I'll see if I can get a video of that this weekend I've had a few people ask me about that recently
@@RedlineMopar thank you so much I really appreciate it.
Hey I didn't have time to make a video of it but if you join my group on Facebook it's called 5.9 magnum swaps I can post a picture of it in the group for everyone
@@RedlineMopar will do thank you
What distributor are you running? I had mine all the way apart in one of my last vids and it just had two wires going to the magnetic pickup. Super simple to hook up to MSD or a Mopar Performace ignition box.
It's just a stock distributor off of a 360 la. I ordered another one so hopefully that's the issue.
@@RedlineMopar The Mopar Performance unit is the same basic part but with a better advance curve. I swapped to one with a better preset curve and made some timing adjustments and gained about two tenths! I'm just glad you weren't trying to run the Magnum distributor because I have no idea if that would even work.
Lol yea I don't think the magnum distributor would work. But I was just gonna use the stock 360 la distributor and lock it out, that msd box I got controls the timing curve via laptop.
Hey I'm not sure if you have Facebook or not but if you do you should join my group it's called 5.9 magnum swaps and I'm sure everyone in there would love to see your ride!
@@RedlineMopar Thanks a lot for the invite and good luck building the group but I don't use any social media except for youtube. I do have a fake facebook account that I use just to check the event schedule at the local drag strip since they don't have an official site but I don't use it for anything else.
Man I'm excited to see that thing running in there! It looks great and the cam sounds awesome! Great work dude! Looks like you may need an accelerator pump adjustment though, so I would hold off on buying new discharge nozzles until you try that. Also I usually only buy discharge nozzles/squirters one at a time from ebay vendors to save cash. The accelerator pump adjustment is on that little spring loaded arm on the driver side front of the carb. Put little wrenches on the top and bottom of the threaded rod that runs through the spring. Tighten for less fuel, loosen for more. A backfire usually but not always means you have too little pump shot, and a stumble/hesitation usually means you have too much pump shot, especially when accompanied by a puff of black smoke. Its pretty common for a Holley to have just enough pump shot to break the tire loose a little bit but still not be squirting all the motor wants so don't be afraid to try a little more pump shot after you get good throttle response. I can turn my pump shot down so far without a hesitation in my Satellite that it won't even break the tires loose so there is A TON of hidden performance to be found in accel pump tuning. Most people just increase pump shot until they get a hesitation or black smoke and then back it off a bit and this works right 9 times out of 10. Be careful to make small adjustments though, do small quarter turns and take mental notes of the amount you moved it in case you need to go back. Also the power valve does affect WOT performance but its main function is to improve part throttle response, economy and drivability and the standard 6.5 is usually right for a majority of combinations. Some hardcore racers who only drive down the track and the staging lanes remove the power valve, plug the hole and run bigger jets to compensate for the lack of the power valve and just let it idle super rich with poor part throttle drivability. I'm definitely not suggesting anything like that though. Good thing is you have a vacuum secondary carb instead of a puddle dumper I mean a double pumper though, the vacuum secondaries are WAY less headache to tune. Vacuum secondary is definitely the way to go on the street too, especially with an automatic. The general rule for Holley vacuum secondary tuning is the secondaries aren't supposed to open below 2000 RPM even with the lightest spring so if your issue is below 2000 RPM its almost definitely an accelerator pump issue. If a hesitation or backfire occurs above 2000 RPM it could be caused by the secondaries or the accel pump or both together. After porting my carb a bit I developed a problem with a backfire at WOT above 2000 RPM and after messing with the accel pump tune for literally months and even trying 3 different power valves I came across the Holley tuning info about tuning above/below 2000 RPM and realized that I needed to tune the secondaries and not the primaries. I ended up ordering a rear metering block conversion kit like you and a jet kit and a AFR gauge all of which I have yet to install. Not sure if you've seen my latest vids but I just took the car to the 1/8 mile for the first time since the Magnum swap and ran 8.80s beating a nitrous 4.6 Mustang twice. I have a new vid up about that and some new vids about my friends 76 D100 if you haven't seen those. Oh and by the way, if you put the trucks old small block timing cover on the Magnum you can run the original belts and accessories on the new motor like I'm doing. You can even run your old valve covers too, my Magnum is almost perfectly disguised as an LA small block. Only big time Mopar guys notice the intake bolt pattern and some other minor differences.
Thanks for the input man!! I'll be sure to check out your recent vids I really like your car alot lol. And I think your probably right about the accelerator pump adjustment I just realized I havent even touched it since I changed the timing to 31 degrees😂
@@RedlineMopar Thanks man I really appreciate that! The car is my life so compliments are everything to me! Best of luck with the tune, I can't wait to see the first burnout!!!
Good vid man, looks like the build is coming along great! Several factors make the Magnum engines great for a performance build. First of all they have fancy lightweight alloy pistons that are made of the same material as most Keith Black pistons. More importantly they have the best flowing factory small block Mopar heads ever made which flow even better than the old 340 heads everyone looks for, and they also have the hydraulic roller cam that you mentioned in the video. As you said they bolt right up in place of an old small block with minimal modifications too. Their biggest downfalls are the crappy factory aluminum intake and 2 barrel EFI setup that runs out of breath at about 3500 RPM and the weak factory valve springs that can't handle much lift or RPM and the pushrod clearance issues that prevent us from running a lot of lift. Awesome looking Challenger there in the background by the way!
Thanks for checking out the channel man!! That challenger in the background is my dads drag car lol it's nothing to fancy it's just tubbed and gutted with mild built 440 and 4.54 rear gear (all we have around us is an 1/8mile track) but it is very fun to ride in 😂
