  • @rohanthe123456
    @rohanthe123456 4 дні тому

    very well explained. Now tell me, you don't create banners in indesign? I use illustrator, and the file becomes heavy. For example if I want to make a 30ft by 10ft large banner, should I make it in illustrator orm use indesign by adding all assets separately from illustrator to indesign.

    • @miketheprintman
      @miketheprintman 4 дні тому

      You can certainly use illustrator to do the design work and then bring it into InDesign to apply the layout, grommet marks, etc. If the file is all vectors then it shouldn’t bog down the computer too much. However if it contains images, you make sure those images are not full 300dpi files. For a 30x10 banner probably 125-150 dpi is more than enough. That should help keep the file size down.

      @@miketheprintman I currenly have been using illustrator for all big banners. This assumes that those CMYK numbers are SWOP to begin with. It's frustrating that brand guides don't specify WHICH CMYK. Chances are this would print to something with a different profile, so those numbers are going to change to preserve appearance?

    • @miketheprintman
      @miketheprintman 12 днів тому

      True. The problem is that you’re trying to have one step for two different processes. This example is trying to keep RGB and CMYK the same, which is impossible. However the point is to try and be as close as possible. The best solution is always to use PANTONE colors for print when possible.

    • @danselzer
      @danselzer 12 днів тому

      @@miketheprintman I don't know. So many pantone colors are well out of the gamut of CMYK and even some wide-gamut devices, don't know if its always worth the trouble. And pantone themselves can be inconsistent between books, and have colors who's difference is less than the tolerance of the printers. Eddy Hagen's written a ton about getting past Pantone which is interesting.

One question though: Do you design banners full scale? I was taught to design on a smaller scale proportionally, and prepress/printshop will blow it up as needed. Reason for this question is the memory lags and crashes I experienced in both Acrobat and InDesign. (I tried your tut on a 60in by 24in selfmade banner). I'm off to your next tut😅.

      That can be true with some designs. I don’t do a ton of straight design work myself, but if I do, I usually try and use vectors when possible #1 and if it’s a heavy image type banner I usually drop the dpi to 150 or 100 depending on the size. They look pixelated up close, but from afar they look fine. Thanks for watching.

We have a Ricoh 7200 (only using the clear for one clients bus cards - so not really necessary)now but our volumes have grown to where we are exceeding the monthly duty cycle on a regular basis. So, I’m looking at the Ricoh 9500 or the KM c14000. I do like the way the Ricoh has the fusing unit separated - seems smart for the longer runs. Do you have the “Auto Color Diagnosis” feature on your model? I’m just wondering if that feature is needed. I’m in the Milwaukee metro area so both the Ricoh & KM have good service teams close & available. We have never had a KM press before - a sister shop of ours has a smaller production KM unit and they like it and have noted good service for it. But I’ve heard some troubling stories on the early years for the KM c14000 - but nothing recent. Let me know if you think the Ricoh Auto Color Diagnosis (if you have it - is it worth the extra $) Let me know your thoughts. Thanks Mike- John the printer man

      As far as I know the c9200/9500 have the color calibrator built in. I wasn’t aware that there was even an option not to have it. Personally I think it’s a great feature of the machine and worth whatever price you have to pay for it. I have heard some stories that the Km 14000 had some growing pains when they first released it, but I’m sure they worked them out by now. My money would’ve on the 9500 though. Ricoh makes great machines.

      There are 2 “Optional” quality control features with the 9500. 1. Image Quality Monitor- Checks for imperfections in print 2. Auto Color Diagnosis - this automatically corrects color when in production. Maybe your 9200 already has this in its build.

    • @miketheprintman
      @miketheprintman 29 днів тому

      @@johnmcadams4738 Those could be new features. I know on the 9200 there is a built in scanner that auto detects image quality and will attempt to fix imperfections in the prints. The c9500 has probably improved on that feature, so that could be what that is. Either way, I don't see how having that could be a downside.

      I know that toner squares are applied to the image belt and the densities are scanned read and adjusted but if you want the printed image itself read and adjusted to the RIP image that is where the optional feature of Auto Color Diagnosis comes into play. My sales rep on this area says he never sells these 2 options because of how good the machine is w/out them.

      Well if that’s the case I would forgo getting that unit. Unless you’re trying to become G7 certified or have a lot of customers that require super accurate color.

      @@KWANTlZE Ah. Well it's definitely doable, but I work for a well established company that's been in business for over 25 years. That number has been built up over time. It is certainly achievable, however, it just takes a lot of hard work selling your services. On top of that it is a very technical business, so there is a big learning curve. I'd be happy to give pointers on where to start, what next steps in establishing business are, etc. John my Patreon, it's free, that is a much easier place to chat back and forth.

    Hi! When I come to do the multiple record layout, the new indesign file has just 1 name, even tough in my preview there is all the names.... do you know why?

    • @miketheprintman
      @miketheprintman Місяць тому

      #1, make sure you have all your static elements on the master page, not on page 1 of the document. The multiple record layout looks at all items on the page, so if you have crop marks it will think you're trying to make those multiple as well. #2, make sure you don't have any large text boxes because InDesign will think you don't have enough room to place multiple records on one page. Hope that helps.

    I work in a print shop and this is super handy! Thank you so much for this video. I wanted to know if you know of a way to create a fix up to do 2 things at the same time. What i am looking to do is to reflect the bleeds like in this video and to add crop marks while only using one fix up instead of 2. Do you know of any way I can do that?

    • @miketheprintman
      @miketheprintman Місяць тому

      First off, thanks for watching, glad the preflight is helpful for you. 2nd, yes, you can apply multiple fixups at once using the action wizard in Acrobat. I'm actually going to be doing a new video either today or tomorrow that will show how to use multiple preflights at one time. However, until then, search out Acrobat Action Wizard online and you should find some good information on it.

      That's a great catch. I forgot to put a "n" before "TEL" in the phone number part of the excel file. That's what caused it to not read properly. I just updated the file on the Google Drive, feel free to redownload and test again. Thanks for catching that. One small character missing and the whole thing blows up on you.

    I wonder why the developer drop support for placing spread (ie skipping pages) in later versions? This would be the perfect script.

    • @miketheprintman

      Don't know. That script has been around forever, so maybe the developer is no longer around. I agree thought, that would make the script damn near perfect for placing PDFs.
