Aftermath of a Semi vs. Train Collision on Highway 44, Alcomdale, Alberta.
For the second time in less than a year, neary identical incidents have occured at this crossing on the Westlock Subdivision. On Tuesday, a super-b loaded with lumber struck the side of the trailing unit on 419, sending lumber flying, and causing the passenger of the truck to be airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The highway was closed until the next morning, causing traffic to take a backroad detour. One of the vehicles managed to hit the ditch next to the already narrow crossing, causing even more of a headache for an already messy situation. The train was split at the crossing for clean up purposes, and the head end was pulled up to the next couple of crossings to remove the mangled debris on the side of CN 5677. This incident was eerily similar to one last spring, when a loaded super-b of grain slammed into the side of a train at this exact crossing. On that day, fog played a large role, but this time around, it was a clear, sunny day. The only thing I could think of would be reduced visibility due to glare, but no cause has been released.
This just goes to show that no matter the weather, anything can happen. Any time is train time, even on lines like these where only two or three trains a day is common. Always use extra caution around railroad crossings, because this is proof that a train always wins - even against a ~140,000 lb semi.

2024 CPKC Holiday Train Near Josephburg, Alberta!
Переглядів 7821 день тому
As I hopped in my car after writing an exam, I looked at the clock. It was 4:40. The CPKC Holiday Train was scheduled to be in Josephburg for 5:15, and Josephburg was exactly 35 minutes away... I wasn't originally planning on going to the holiday train, since it landed right in the middle of exam week for me, but I thought "Screw it", as I ditched the idea of studying, and made my way to the ho...
Two L527s Cross the Heart River Trestle in Peace River, Alberta!

Ever since I first saw a photo of the Heart River Trestle in CN's 2020 Calendar, I knew I had to visit it! There were only two major issues; Peace River was five hours from home, and there was only two or three trains passing through each day, with most running at night. When I found out my brother had a hockey tournament in Peace River, I was probably the only person cheering about the long ro...

Hey everyone! It certainly isn’t often that something takes the right of way over trains… especially cows… However, in the timetable for the Alberta Pacific Subdivision, it is clearly stated that trains “must be prepared to stop when cattle are being herded through crossing”. It was an amazing location, I was so grateful to be able to visit it! The second train was definitely very long. It originated from Edmonton, Alberta, and was destined for Roma. From there, the cars get distributed. There are many industries in the area - logging, grain elevators, etc. Some of these cars (diesel tankers) even make it as far north as Hay River, Northwest Territories to deliver fuel! Thanks for stopping by, and for the kind words!

    Unless I missed it on both trains, I didn't see any DPU's. Of course I did fast forward through some of the video but wow, what power to have 4 locomotives on the head and no DPU's, that's impressive, pulling long trains like that up the grades!!!

    • @AlbertaBoundRailfanning
      @AlbertaBoundRailfanning 3 дні тому

      You are correct, no DPUs! Most of the branchlines up here do not use DP. Interestingly enough, this line is *relatively* flat, minus these mountain grades of course. I'm sure many trains have stalled out! It definitely is an impressive feat, and just goes to show how skilled the engineers are up there!

    Two of the biggest issues with rigs is fatigue and the hypnotic boredom of the prairies. If you're running the Rogers' Pass you're on your game. Or you're going down the mountain.

    • @AlbertaBoundRailfanning
      @AlbertaBoundRailfanning 4 дні тому

      Yes 100%! I know how zoned out you can be when you're traveling along a boring stretch, especially one that these guys likely travel daily. 9 times out of 10, there isn't anything to be alert of, unlike the mountains. It really wouldn't be hard to miss crossing lights if you were zones out, and before you know it, the train is in front of you. Is it an excuse, no... but I can definitely see it happening.

    Lots of urban people have NO idea about the many issues in the rural areas. Lots of crossings have NO controlled lights etc. The side reflectors are totally in adequate ( ussually not clean) and if poor weather cond will NOT get a big truck stopped in time. I even had to put a car in the snowbank. Had trres cut back once " after i complained" . No proper tail lights anymore ( was a cabose ) Why is NOT flashing lights on top of locomotive ( and maybe middle too / and back like a school bus) Locomotives at rail yds like other equip is required by WCB. That Fed authority nothing is required. Did the locomotive hit the truck. Or truck into the side of the train. Was the train going forward ot was it even backing up. Lots of issues at rural crossing. Utube pic at daytime now. What was the time of the collision? What was the angle of thr sunlight. Its winter the sun is in the far south. Often its like a blinding morning sun. And yes driving on icy road. Etc. 1 403 830 4124 calgary ab cdn. Steel wheels on steel rails is NOT good emergency braking. Will find out more about this collosion. But NO MSM often get it messed up. Hey urban reporters. So much easier to blame the truck drivers. Lots of times its a combination effect. Big wide truck csbs now cant see past the door post. Air danamitc mirror ( almost took out a cop car lol ) Creates an even bigger blind spot. Had cameras and front hood mounted mirrors on our own semi( not required but maim mirror must NOT be cracked. Lol. Gov requirement lol. ) yet dont run out of hrs on the Elect log lol. Lots of issues

    I drive a local truck and have to cross a road intersection like this. It's sketchy since traffic can be approaching you from behind in your blind spot, and you'll never see them until the last second, and with the type of truck I drive, there isn't much of a rear window to look out of since it's blocked by a big bulk tank attached to the back of my truck. Fortunately this railroad crossing has warning lights to indicate if a train is coming. As long as the crossing lights are working, that's good enough for me.

      Absolutely! It's certainly an intricate stretch of railroad that would most certainly take some experience and a steady hand. Although, I suppose if you live up there, it's all you'd know!

    Its hard to wrap your head around the power needed to move that much. You seem to know lots about trains so let me ask. On a diesel electric loco, how does the throttle work? Is the diesel rpm on a governor that adjusts to feed an increase of DC amps, or is it up to the engineer to feed the fuel to prevent stalling the diesel? I would love to learn how they work. Great shots of these BEASTS. RC from Pittsburgh,Pa.

    • @AlbertaBoundRailfanning
      @AlbertaBoundRailfanning 26 днів тому

      It sure is a feat of engineering. Your first guess is pretty close! These diesel electric locomotives have eight throttle "notches" (1-8), that adjust the engine RPMs incrementally. The increase in RPMs increase the power generated, which increases the current going to the traction motors located on 4/6 of the axles. Most of the older locomotives use DC current, but most new engines (and some retrofitted old ones) are using AC technology, thanks to its increased benefits for most applications. I'm not a railroader myself, so I'm not too involved! I hope most of that is correct! Thanks for the comment!

    I love this footage! No sunny 3/4 roster shots, but dreary, cold winter weather, with headlights piercing the gloom. Locomotives thundering and straining to drag that very long manifest train up the grade. BTW, I knew a guy from Peace River years ago. He said it gets VERY cold up there in winter, and I believe him, from the lower 48.

      Well what the heck - you're totally correct. I had someone else recently comment that they could not hear any sound after the intro on another video (but never used to have issues). Now I'm at a loss as to whether it's UA-cam, my editor, my camera, or somewhere in between. I'll have to do some research, thank you for pointing that out, and I apologize for the inconvenience! Update - it's definitely on my camera end somehow. That really sucks, I need to take a look at whether it's the settings or if my mic is messed up. I can't believe I haven't noticed sooner. I should really edit with headphones. ;) I really appreciate you bringing this up!

      @@AlbertaBoundRailfanning No problem sir! Mixing the audio in Audacity into mono and then converting it into a two channel stereo file (while still technically being mono) and then slapping that into the video again is the quickest way I can think of fixing this ;) Thank you for posting this footage even if the audio is wonky! Thanks for the advice! I did some playing around today, and discovered it's my camera's mic jack that's the root cause. In one position I can get both channels to work, in another just the left, or just the right, or even sometimes none. I've already had one video come out staticky, which I thought was just corrupt. I'm going to look into my options to get it fixed, or upgrade cameras all together! That sounds pretty awesome. It sure was amazing to see in real life! A little disheartened that this and so many other catches were all monophonic, but at least I've got options to remix it haha! Thanks again for catching this!!

      @@AlbertaBoundRailfanning If you're looking to upgrade cameras and want one that will last for 30 years without being obsolete (and if you treat it right it might actually last that long) then I recommend getting the Canon XA65. It's a 2000 dollar camcorder but heck it even has XLR inputs so you could hotshoe mount a mic rail and put some nice condensers up top and get super high fidelity audio :D In general the Canon XA series is fantastic. I have an XA10 that just died but it served me well for a good while before it died from humidity damage. Glad I could help catch a video error! Keep up the great work :D

      That's funny you mention that! I was actually just looking at the XA60 and XA70 haha! They look like fantastic options, so I'm glad to hear your opinion. I started off with an old HF R80, before moving to DSLRs for video. Now I'm thinking about going back into the camcorder lineup, so the XAs are all completely new to me
