OVERNIGHT ON THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT BARNEY!
I camped right on the Summit of Mount Barney. Right on the top! What an unbelievable experience.
I climbed up the South East Ridge trail. Had a fantastic night on the summit however got myself into some trouble on the decent as the visibility was only about 5-10m due to really low cloud cover. I got lost for over 2.5 hours completely off trail bush bashing through some really dangerous terrain but managed to find my way back up to the summit and back on track.
Navigation is essential if you're going to spend the night. Make sure to take your phone, with some maps (Alltrails) to avoid my mistake happening to you!
I had 4.5L of water with me for the hike which would have been sufficient if I hadn't got lost.
Any questions please drop me a comment or get me on instagram at @__gibbsy.

MOUNT BARNEY SUMMIT: SOUTH EAST RIDGE | VLOG
Переглядів 14 тис.4 роки тому
Mount Barney South East Ridge accent, and Peasants Ridge decent is a 14.5km loop on Mount Barney located in South East Queensland. I would class this hike as DIFFICULT as it was raining which made the rocks and scrambling incredibly dangerous in sections near the summit. The hike took me 8 hours to complete! Would absolutely advise taking a map for navigation as the track is difficult to follow...

    Never underestimate the use of an old school "Silva Compass". Take bearings on your way up, write them down. Then deduct 180 degrees to find your way back down. Well done on your efforts, it looks like a pretty tough climb. Good Cardiac & Cartilage workout. Top video footage also ! You made it back safe and sound, Cheers mate.

    Best advice I can give you is dump that krapmandu equipment! There was a saying in the serious hiking groups while I lived in NZ. You only buy Kathmandu if you want to get rescued! I was involved in some very serious near deaths of other hikers due to multiple equipment failures. While living in NZ. I bought some of their gear many years ago thinking it was decent stuff. But it's not and can leave you in a pi kle when things break suddenly. They also don't want to acknowledge equipment failure or honor warranties! I climbed Barney around the same time you did after the fires. Carried around 23kg for an overnighter. It snowed not far to the south and could see a light dusting of snow down on Bald Rock to the south.

    What was the name of the camping spot?

    • @djLeadeye
      @djLeadeye 9 місяців тому

      There isn't one because it's not truly a camping spot. Not the brightest idea to spend the night there and put it on UA-cam. I think Rum Jungle and maybe one other are on the way up the Mountain, but there are none at the top. You can find all of the sites in the park here: parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/mount-barney/camping

    You might need to check the National Parks website -""Camping is also prohibited on the East Peak of Mount Barney (PDF, 39KB) and within 500m surrounding the peak to protect the fragile natural environment-penalties apply."" - NOT COOL to be camping on this summit -

    Great vid. When I was younger (in my teens, early 20's) we would drive up there and hike up the hill at night (yes we were crazy) and camp in the overhang section of the climb (there was no falling rock warnings back then). We would wake in the morning to early climbers and rock climbers hanging over our heads. Good times. I remember having a friend at the time panic after making it up the first bit and wanting to stop there until morning but we got her up the hill. Only ever climbed it once during daylight ours and have gone down in the slight wet which was a little sketchy but a great climb none the less. Thanks once again

    Thanks for pricking my memory of my climb as a fit 31 year old back in 1972 which was spoiled somewhat by an attacking eagle on the summit. I agree its always harder coming down, especially with loose stuff. Great footage enjoyed by this old bugger thanks to U Tube. My old 35 mm colour slides just don't cut it anymore. 😁
