2023 Trek CX Cup (C2)
Kicked off my first UCI World Cup weekend with the Friday C2 event at Trek Headquarters! The past few years Friday's race has been a C1, but this year it was back down to a C2 event which meant a tall order to try and crack a top ten finish with some top Euros. I gave it a good rip in the sloppy conditions riding in 9th and 10th most of the race, but ended up with 11th place and pretty cooked after that. The last two laps were a struggle.
Thanks to everyone for the love and cheers out there, Chad Cannon and Bailey Rudolph for the extra wheels, and Matis & Julian for the top notch work in the pits as always.
World Cup recap dropping next!

Fast and furious out there! Made the lead group of 7 over the powerline climbs, but dangled to Misery and got dropped for good there. Stayed solo in 6th for the next 45 minutes to and through 510, then got caught by a group of three - John, Pete, and Ben. After a few pulls, John was the first to go, then Pete, and then Ben and I rode together to the finish. We played some games the last 1km and...

I finally made it over to Europe for my first Kerstperiode. I've always wanted to be here during this iconic two week period, but didn't start racing cross seriously until my last year of U23 and thought it was too late. I had some plans to make it happen last year, but knew I wanted to make it happen this year. It's been a tough first week with travel, getting sick, and a crash at the start of...

After some bad luck last year, I was happy with how things went at the National Championships this year! Not quite the day I was hoping for, but I did what I could and left it all out there. I was dangling within the first 15 minutes and felt like I was missing a gear all day. I got gapped off in a singletrack section, but we managed to bridge back before Williamsburg before getting gapped again and regrouping one more time. I finally got gapped for good on the rollers as we hit 10km to go. Shouto...

Another wild & fun O2S in the books! I felt great and executed my race plan - follow moves from four key riders and save as much energy as I could through Misery Hill. My only other deal was to make at least one attack at some point after Misery, which I launched flying down onto the road. Nothing stuck (the entire race) and we were back together. I gave it another go once more before 510, but ...

Whoa - what a brutal section of the course! Everyone told me it was an important part, but the group eased up as we approached and the climb was right in front of us. I came to the front and rode maybe half way up before dismounting on the steep, loose, rocky climb. Caleb Swartz (eventual winner) and I ran clear of the others. WOW, WOW, my legs are killing me just watching this. Thanks for sharing. We are mountain bikers who live a half hour north of your dad & mom in WI & just had the best time chatting with them picking up fire wood. Infact, we moved from Grand Junction, CO, so spent countless hours at Kokopelli bike trails, 18 Road & Moab, which I'm hoping your parents will visit. Your dad told us about you, so of course we are now fans for sure...Have a great time & enjoy every second..Nothing is better than mountain biking for sure.

Good question! I led into that climb in both 2021 and 2022, but was off the back this year by ten seconds. In 2021, we all dismounted and ran. In 2022, we all dismounted and ran, but Dax cleared it and crested over the top in front. This year, it looked like everyone dismounted - it seemed much looser this year. Sometimes a few of us will remount part ways up, but it’s a risky move. I tried that this year and stalled out only to keep running.

Balls to wall!!! Having done a Class 5.4 free climb (supposedly/ per LOJ) on rocks, I’d be up that in an eyeblink (and ropeless), IF I knew for sure the structure was sound… but not knowing, I don’t think I’d climb that for all the money or with the best ropes/gear! Kudos on the climb and for sharing! I hiked it (to the base) 2 days ago and really wanted to see close ups of the inside. LOL to the embankment; I think we may have approached from the same logging road that flanks it to the North.

Your "climbing expertise" is lacking a bit... and the "infused drama" is silly. I grew up not far from Kent Tower; even road bicycle up the firelanes to get there. My brother and I climbed it many times - up the silo ladder, no safety harness, no ropes -- just climb. Yes, it's a bit unnerving once you get above treetop level. The tower is about 100' high, so not for the faint of heart. Still, it's a fabulous view of the Crocker Hills from that point (one of the higher points of elevation in WI). Having done that though, I have HUGE respect for those guys that climb up a 1,000'+ tower to change a bulb. That takes REAL balls!

Good question - you could definitely run something faster like an Aspen if you have them, but I wouldn’t stress about it too much. Last year I ran the old model of the Specialized Fast Trak for O2S, Cheq, & Iceman, but I think with the new tread I would run FT/Renegade for front/rear. I’ve been running Aspens all year and they’re quick!

Did you mount the camera below the handlebar? With XC helmets you can't mount it on top of the helmet where it would be ideal, and for a chest mount is too much effort and it may also be uncomfortable. When I'm riding I can't find a good mounting point. And I thought mounting the camera on handlebars would be way too shaky. Awesome video, by the way!

    • @caseyhildebrandt

I run a Garmin/GoPro mount from KOM Cycling I like. It’s a quick mount so I can take the camera on and off by rotating it 90 degrees. I do run HyperSmooth on the GoPro as well so that helps the stability as well!

WAAAAAY back in 2000, the first year of O2S, that climb was rideable. It was still hard, but I was able to get up it without dismounting. I think all of the side by side traffic has made it so tough like it is now.
