The show got SO MUCH BETTER!! Hazbin Hotel Episode 2 Reaction
As I mention at the end of the video, if you want to see the full reaction and/or hear all of my extended thoughts then you can check out the entire video I recorded on my other channel: @RiverReactsWatchalong
As a small point of clarification: one of the things I talked about post-episode (which you can hear in the full watchalong version) was how I don't like when things are too expected and/or predictable. That I like being surprised by things. I do just want to say that this isn't universally true of course, and that sometimes when things are surprising it's just because the writing is bad and the new thing that happened doesn't really make any sense 😆

    This show absolutely cursed the Happy Birthday song, though it did lead to some fun art, my favourite being some of the major character running away from Suletta as she sings them Happy Birthday, because they don't want to die. It's a shame that you seem to have stopped uploading this series, but I understand that your own health and well-being come first, so don't feel obliged to come back to it if you feel you're not ready to.

    I love that the main message of the movie isn't "when we remove this one person from the system the system is fixed" but "the system allows horrible people to do horrible things unchecked, so the system needs to change". Because often the stories are about removing the one bad guy dictator and everything is happy and good (and suddenly it rains and the antelope return, because the clouds know when the good guy wins). That's not how it works. Here we see that a 1000 years of indoctrination is not so easily cast aside. Well, it's still pretty easy, all told, but the institute is bad all the way down, changing the director is not going to fix a system that keeps up walls and scares all citizens all the time, into accepting all the surveillance and tells them to distrust everyone. Nimona is also not actually doing anything at the end there, she doesn't flatten buildings or stomp on people, she just walks on the street, and is attacked. Then when she is shot with missiles she falls into a building, and when she sees a screen with kids talking about killing monsters she rips the screen off, but that's it. The damage is mainly caused by the bombs or by Nimona falling into things after being hit with bombs.

    "...changing their worldview and adapting to new information... however I also think you can see it with Gloreth..." Maybe. I can see two possibilities here. One is that she just on-boarded the hatred and prejudices of those around her, and the other is that she was protecting her friend. If you wanna see another example of something like this, watch Harry and the Hendersons. What sort of society did Gloreth set up? Not one that _went out_ to _hunt_ monsters, but instead one that was _self contained_ and _walled off_ from monsters. Gloreth's people stay in a hidey-hole, her friend gets the rest of the world. Either is a reasonable interpretation, I think. Overall, I like that this movie didn't do what _so many_ shows do these days, where the gay characters are gay... and that's their entire personality, the only thing about them. The fact that Ambrosius and Balister are in a relationship comes up in the movie in _exactly_ the way it would if they were any other couple. It never felt out of place, like they were trying to signal "Hey! These two are gay, remember!?". Virtue signaling nonsense. Instead, it was a fact about them and the _best part_ was that they treated it like it was 100% normal instead of "oo, look at this representation!". _That_ is representation done right, to have it just be part of the story as if it were utterly normal and no one bats an eyelash. But that's not what we get _so_ often. What we _get_ is bad guys still using slurs and good guys getting close to it and apologizing or objecting and then saying there's nothing wrong with it. Don't! Write the world you want to be living in, where no one calls someone 'gay' as an insult because... well why would you? It'd be as odd as calling someone _straight_ as an insult. How would that even work? Or how about "you air breather!"... I mean... what? How is that an insult? Or yelling "you brunette!" ... What? How is that an insult? And if you yelled it at a blonde it'd be even more confusing. No one would do it. "You Yankees fan!" Again, makes no sense. So no one in a world that _was_ equal on these things of representation would ever say it, nor would anyone ever get close to it or say it doesn't apply and apologize for it. It's what She-Ra did, too. There were gay characters in that and no one so much as batted an eyelash when it came up. "Here's my two fathers". "Nice to meet you". That's _it._ In this word it's _so_ normal that it's not even worth remarking on. It's _less surprising_ in that world than the concept that an Asian person might only speak French because they're a second-generation immigrant living in France. I dislike that Nimona came back. Don't get me wrong, it was a happy ending, but it presents a problems. First, it cheapens what she did. It means that, ultimately, that weapon wasn't even a _threat_ to her. Second, it keeps perpetuating this idea that you can do things without consequences. No one _dies_ in movies anymore, and if they _do_ die, audiences don't believe it. "Oh it's a fake out", "he didn't really die", and so on. Half the time _villains_ don't die in movies. I get that this is media, not life, but media is also _art,_ and one of the most important things art can do is hold up a mirror to the real world, show us the pretty... but just as importantly (or more so) show us the ugly (which is what this whole movie was about anyway). Now I'm _not saying_ that Nimona should have stayed dead. Instead, I'm suggesting she shouldn't have _been_ dead in the first place, we should never have been in that position. And not with her coming back because magic. If it had been something like she'd been in a vehicle and we saw the vehicle crash into the turret and presumed her dead but she walks out from the side a moment later and we get a flashback to her diving out of the car... that's fine. She didn't die. She was _smart._ But I really, really, _really_ hate this constant scenario we get of protagonists 'appearing to die but not really', because it removes all stakes from _death!_ How much can you _possibly_ be invested into whether or not a character survives if you've grown up on media where they always do _even if they die!?_ It just ruins story-telling. And worse than this, it's not _just_ heroes that go through this. Villains are getting the same treatment. They go through so much, suffer all over the place, and finally defeat the villain, killing him, and he just comes back later anyway. It's like playing cops and robbers with a child and when one gets shot the kid just yells 'nuh-uh' and refuses to accept the outcome. It makes it hard to take anything in a movie as... well... anything. A prime example of _that_ is the latest Star Wars trilogy. The _original_ trilogy ends with the Emperor being killed, the big bad guy, finally defeated. People _died_ to achieve that, including one of the other main characters who _sacrificed themselves_ to bring it about. And then you get the sequel trilogy, and _all that_ is undone. Sure, they kill the bad guy again, but who cares? It's been established now that he can just come back whenever he feels like it. Maybe if they established him as such a being early on, or going forward kept bringing him back, saying they _can't_ kill him, making him an allegory for _all_ evil, fine, but they won't.

      Your point about treating representation as being something just as normal as more conventionally accepted/majority identities or ways of living or whatever is kind of why I reacted the way I did: "It's gay! Neat. 🙂" I understand why some people make a big deal about these things, but for me personally I generally prefer to acknowledge it as a positive thing without going out of my way to heavily focus on it because to me that's how you help normalize it. But to each their own in that regard I guess 🤷 I've seen a number of folks saying they think Nimona shouldn't have come back for one reason or another, and I think that in a way what justifies the ending for me so to speak is that it's not universally accepted/rejected. Almost inevitably, when you write a story with complex characters that wants to address some messy topics, there's never really going to be a way to do so without inviting at least _some_ criticism. I think in this story's case it's fine that Nimona comes back if for no other reason than _because_ of how much she struggled up to that point (the "ugly" that you talk about). As for specifically this idea of death losing its impact and not having any stakes, I certainly understand the frustration with recognizing patterns of tropes and similar happening over and over again in media but I don't think it's fair to fault a story for something just because it's been done before. The how and why of a particular story's execution should be considered before lumping it in with more cookie cutter contemporaries. And to an extent these things depend on the consumer, right? Part of the reason I like anime (and anime-inspired works) is because I find it tends to be less predictable than the kind of recycled garbage you see come out of big Hollywood studios that people constantly complain about yet continue paying to see. Hopefully that all at least mostly made sense and I wasn't being too vague such that no points came across, haha. In any event, I think it's nice to see people passionate about media (as long as they don't take it too far of course) ^.^

    • @robindude8187

      @@RiverReacts *that's how you help normalize it. But to each their own in that regard I guess* I dunno. We've seen pretty consistently that media that focuses heavily on those topics, _instead of_ normalizing it the way you and I agree it should be done, will fail. Even people _in the target group_ tend not to like it, at least not for long. There was a comic series solely about gay superheroes, but that's _all_ they were, that was _the_ point, and sales started slow (for obvious reasons) but even then died off pretty quickly. Even gay people don't _want_ representation and pandering like that. Same goes for other forms of pandering media. The only reason _movies_ get away with it is that they're all one-shot deals. The pandering happens, and then stops. If it didn't _do_ that, if it was movie after movie after movie of pandering, I figure the popularity would drop _fast._ *I think in this story's case it's fine that Nimona comes back if for no other reason than because of how much she struggled up to that point (the "ugly" that you talk about).* Well, do keep in mind that I offered alternatives to her 'dying' in the first place. Believe me, I'm _very_ happy Nimona's still around, and I genuinely think she should have survived, just not the _way_ they did it. *I don't think it's fair to fault a story for something just because it's been done before.* I'm not, exactly. Pretty much _every_ story has been done before, with slight cosmetic changes. My problem is what the trope is doing to us, in terms of our expectations as an audience, and thus the impact a story is capable of having. There was a time when the death of a main character would get to me, because I built up a bond with that character. Now? ... It just doesn't _mean_ anything, certainly not at the time. It _might_ mean something when the story ends and the person doesn't come back, but by that point the moment is gone and I'm just feeling 'oh', and move on, when I _could have_ had a far more impactful reaction to the death. *Part of the reason I like anime (and anime-inspired works) is because I find it tends to be less predictable than the kind of recycled garbage you see come out of big Hollywood studios that people constantly complain about yet continue paying to see.* I agree 100% with this. I _love_ anime. I just wish I could have responded to the deaths of characters in Devilman-Crybaby _as they happened_ the first time I watched it. But I couldn't because of the Hollywood stuff, and even the occasional anime (looking at you, DBZ). I watched characters I _cared_ about die on screen and felt... nothing. I wasn't until the very end, when I realized they weren't coming back, that it hit me they were really gone. But... this is often two or more episodes after the fact, there was no lingering emotion to process, no impact. So the _only_ death that had _any_ impact on me was Akira's, and even _that_ was muted until the credits rolled and I realized it was the end of the series. This trope, being _so_ consistent and constant, robs me of story impact. I watch my nephew treat death casually, as if it's no big deal, and I find that very, very disturbing. I have to wonder... is this 'heroes never die' media leading us to grow up to not take someone dying as serious? I think it is, and I think it's even affecting me. I don't... can't... treat death as much of anything anymore, unless the person is _really_ close to me. My _aunt_ died recently, and my reaction was 'oh', because I rarely ever saw her (maybe a dozen times in my life). It just... didn't _mean_ anything. And I worry that media like this is training us not to care. *Hopefully that all at least mostly made sense and I wasn't being too vague such that no points came across, haha.* I think you did fine. :) *In any event, I think it's nice to see people passionate about media (as long as they don't take it too far of course) ^.^* WHAT!? TAKE IT TOO FAR!? HOW _DARE_ YOU, SIR! RAGE! RAGE! ... ahem... :P Have a nice day!

      I don't usually like death fakeouts, but this one is super special to me. This movie is a trans allegory. The book it was based on was written by a trans man, and he's said it was at least partly to understand his gender. the movie didn't show a beginning to Nimona, and they didn't die in the end. Trans people have *always* been around, it's been recorded through history. And no matter what people do to make us into monsters, to otherize and villainize us, and even to kill us (RIP Nex Benedict), we will always exist. Those of us who are in unsafe spaces can take a lot of courage from the symbolism of Nimona.

    • @robindude8187
      @robindude8187 6 місяців тому

      @@turospinstarr9859 I _do_ understand that. If I were to rewrite the ending, I'd do one of a couple things. Like I said in my original, I'd have her avoid it in a _smart_ way instead of just "she's just awesome" sort of way that cheapens the whole thing. Another is that she dies, and during the memorial, Balthasar is giving a speech. During it, he echoes words from the beginning of the movie. "We have finally found peace. But if we want a happily ever after, we can never let our guard down... because the monsters are always in here," as he puts a hand over his heart, "We can't right the wrongs of the past, all we can do is struggle to be sure that it never happens again, that others like Nimona feel safe in our walls, among us, welcomed." As this last line is going on, two or three people in the crowd... shift. Nimona wasn't the only one. There aren't _many,_ but they exist. Welcomed into the society, and no longer having to hide what they are, accepted. First, I think this lends emotional impact to the sacrifice Nimona makes in combating hate. Second, it gets out a message that trans people are there, always have been (just as you were mentioning). Third, it shows again where the real problem is, not just behind walls that we can break down, but inside us, all of us, the potential to learn hate for others who are different than we are. But... all that's just personal preference, of course.

    I really enjoyed this reaction! I'm especially fond of how you recognize and talk about societal issues that the movie shows, but that many reactors I've watched seem to miss in the chaos and emotion. Such as the fact that while of course the Director herself is horrible, she is also, ultimately, very much a symptom of the society she grew up in - a society in which seemingly innocuous things like cereal commercials and video games reinforce dangerous and hateful ideals, to say nothing of the order of Knights that make up a significant portion of the upper classes, appear to be at least the primary form of law enforcement in the kingdom, have been a part of the ruling classes for a thousand years, and who where founded specifically for the purpose of destroying so-called monsters. uh... okay so that was a bit more than i intended to write but basically YEAH. you point out things that a lot of other folks seem to miss in all the commotion, and that is pog.

    First off, love how everyone I've watched is immediately against Ambrosius until they see him being friends with Bal, everyone's totally willing to throw hands for Boldheart 👏 Second, "It's gay! Neat!" is probably probably gonna react to gay media for a while, it's so perfect XD

    • @RiverReacts
      @RiverReacts 10 місяців тому

      Yeah it's funny how despite their color schemes/character designs the way they're introduced definitely leads most folks to take Bal's side from the get-go. Probably has to do with a lot of people seeing some of their own experiences being inappropriately judged or victimized in Bal's character premise, or maybe not liking unearned legacies like how Ambrosius is presented? Whatever the case, feels like good writing to me 😁 Haha, and I'm glad you liked that. While it's definitely nice to see representation in media I personally like to make note of it without making a _huge_ deal about it. Cause after all, those sorts of things *_should_* be considered normal, right 😉

    20:41 so nimona is pretty clearly a trans allegory, but I truly cannot believe how powerful this little bit is. I am trans, and this metaphor of being just on the edge of sneezing and just...... not.... its exactly the one I came up with to describe gender dysphoria to people who don't experience it. and up until this point, I had never heard anyone use that metaphor to describe it, so this scene truly destroys me every time I watch it. not to mention there is a trans flag in the background..... there's no way this wasn't intentional

    Brilliantly done dear. You actually got many of the more subtel aspects like light/shadow play.. Well Done. This also hits extremely hard for the shapechangers in our world. Trans are 0.3% of the population, but take 11% of the violence. those who survive that, have a 41% (yes 41) suicide rate.,.. but everyone wants to talk about pronouns...

      Thank you! There's really a lot to love in this movie, both on the surface and for those paying a bit more attention ^.^ Ah yes, the very existence of pronouns seems to be the big gripe for anti-trans folks at present, just like how "bathroom safety" was the main argument years ago. It's always something incredibly shallow and transparent with those people, isn't it? 😅

      Haha my editing definitely ended up changing a lot over these first several months. I think at first there was some very clear clunkiness as someone with no editing experience, but I quickly got better at some things and then slowly started picking up other little tricks and things as I went along. I felt like even if I wasn't doing anything extraordinary I was starting to get pretty decent at it... but then for a variety of reasons I talked about across a number of Community posts I eventually decided to go with the current style that I call "lazy editing" 😞 It's a bit of a shame... but hey, maybe one day I'll be able to hire an actual editor for my videos 😆 🙏

    I use they/them for Nimona because, as a character, they seem to be on the non-binary umbrella. They only ever seem to be called she by people who aren't very well educated and/or are straight up brainwashed. That's just my take on it.

      Very fair! I think either before I did my reaction or after the reaction but before I recorded the thoughts section I actually Google'd Nimona's pronouns because there are obvious queer themes throughout the movie and so wanted to check. It does seem that ND Stevenson confirmed Nimona's use of she/her pronouns, but hey, when in doubt they/them is usually the safer route right 🙂

    As always: Your reaction was very enjoyable, thanks! :3 Another thing I really like in this adaptation are the costumes and the color choices. Its so nice to see them including so many iconic looks and outfits from the manga and making them work so well in this world. Same with the many hair colors, they dont look out of place at all. There is a little Making-Of Video were people of the Design-Team etc. are talking about how many thoughts and ideas went into certain items or how many tests they did to get the right colors for the wigs. Shows how important those Details are^^

      @RiverReacts Рік тому

      Thanks for watching/commenting! I've also largely been noticing and appreciating the costume designs, with a notable exception that I talk about in the next episode 😅 While I don't remember if I highlighted the hair colors in particular in either of the first two episodes, you're definitely right to mention how they don't look out of place. Shanks, Nami, and even Zoro's hair all feel appropriate and non-distracting from their overall appearance. I might check out that video later. I don't always go out of my way to watch stuff like that but since we've got confirmation that the series has been renewed by Netflix it might be nice to see a bit of the behind-the-scenes passion that carries the show! I'll hold off for now in case they address characters from later in the season though 😉

    Nice to see your reaction! Your second theory about Bambi's ability in the description is the general interpretation of how her ability works - remember how she tossed away her bankai-stealing disc and it exploded? Something like that. Now, about how Quilge tried to steal Ichigo's Bankai - I was confused by something similar, namely how Quilge could take in Ayon and survive. So I went to the wiki and found information that comes from a novel - so it's not necessarily manga spoilers, more novel extras that clarify things Tite Kubo either couldn't or simply didn't provide. I'll go down a few empty spaces if you don't want to read it. After realizing he couldn't beat Ayon, Quilge activated an ability called Sklaverei. It's not the same thing as their Vollstandig, which is sort of like a massive boost to overall abilities + flight. However, the novel confirms that all Sternritter, when using Vollstandig, can also then activate Sklaverei, which Quilge describes as a 'basic Quincy ability that increases "spirit particle gathering" to the extreme and makes particles absolutely subordinate.' (Side note, their halo needs to be intact to maintain Sklaverei.) When he activated it, he absorbed Ayon and became somewhat ... corrupted; eyes and such in his wings and body. However, he survived. The novel then states that 'Sklaverei decomposes Reishi to its most fundamental level upon absorption, hence allowing Quincy to assimilate Hollow Reishi without danger.' Basically, when having this ability active, they are able to survive Hollow Reishi. Therefore, Quilge probably thought, "Let's try stealing this bankai in this state." That ... did not work. Maybe because Ichigo also has Quincy blood, or perhaps it's something that just doesn't work on hollowified bankais, I'm not really sure. An addendum of my own thoughts - Vollstandig is described as an upgrade of Letzt Stil, the move Uryu used a while back in his fight with Mayuri which gave Uryu a massive boost AND total Reishi dominance in one glove-wearing package, in exchange for losing all of his powers; Letzt Stil's "losing all powers" mechanic is needed because the human body can't survive it, and consequently all Quincy abilities are sealed. My own thoughts - after using Letzt Stil, Uryu implied that losing his abilities wasn't an instant turn-off ability, but it appeared more like the spirit particles he gathered were draining away. After the power-up boost is over, Letzt Stil probably gradually 'flushes' all Reishi gathered out of the body before sealing the Quincy powers - but why? Well, it might be because gathering Hollow Reishi and keeping it after Letzt Stil deactivates would kill them; therefore, Hollow Reishi would be removed and any more Reishi gathering forbidden while the Quincy is in an exhausted, vulnerable state. The way I see it, then - Vollstandig + Sklaverei is much less automatic in nature; so long as you have sufficient skill, you can probably safely eject the Hollow Reishi whilst maintaining your powers afterwards, but there's the risk that you can't. Letzt Stil is the safety-first prototype method. (Maybe the bankai-stealing device has a similar safety-first mechanic that prevents hollowified bankais from being kept by Sternritter who aren't always keeping Sklaverei active?)

      I do actually recall Bambi's capture device exploding after she threw it. I don't remember if it stayed in the UA-cam version but I'm pretty sure I literally reacted saying, "why did it explode?!" 🤣 While this novel information is somewhat interesting, it definitely doesn't seem to fully settle my confusion 🤔 Not only are you still having to make some leaps in logic to make it make sense, but there's also the fact that it wasn't just Quilge who tried to steal Ichigo's bankai but that guy from the very start of TYBW I referred to as Orange as well. When Yhwach stole Head Captain Yamamoto's bankai he said that he was the only one who could handle that strong of a power, so maybe it's as simple as Ichigo being too *main character* powerful for the likes of Quilge or Orange? Speaking of Orange, did we also just kind of drop the whole Arrancar/Quincy hybrid thing they showed us way back when TYBW started? And now that we know more about how these different soul presences or whatever can or cannot coexist through Kisuke Urahara's explanations, what's the rundown on how all of that even worked anyhow? 🤨 I feel like these different sort of thoughts I have while watching are completely reasonable, but some people just want to get their knickers in a twist over anything they see that remotely resembles criticism 🙄 Hopefully in time I'll be able to develop an audience where those types of folks have been weeded out, haha. Anyways, as we continue I expect ANSWERS or flashy enough action to make me forget that I have questions 😠🤭

    • @lackajaybee1342
      @lackajaybee1342 Рік тому

      @@RiverReacts It does require some logic leaps, especially when getting to the bankai-stealing device aspects; theory-crafting often feels like, "I grab nugget of dialogue this + piece of exposition that + as small a hop of thought as I can manage". His MC-ness would explain why they couldn't steal his bankai in particular, although I still have some favoritism for the bankai-stealing-device don't like hollowified bankai for the simple reason that the bankais were automatically lost as soon as they were hollowified. Who knows for sure, though, maybe more information will be unveiled that I've forgotten. To speak only with information available up to now ... who knows where the Arrancar/Quincy hybrids went? Maybe Ywhach wanted to experiment with them, see if they could steal Ichigo's bankai, and decided they weren't satisfactory and got rid of them all offscreen like he did Orange onscreen? Maybe Tite Kubo wants to focus on captain vs. Sternritter fights, as a way of showing one group's heavyweights vs. another's? (It would be a shift from the Arrancar arc, which was more escalatory in starting with Grimmjow's Fraccion, then ex-Espada, then Espada.) Maybe he's saving them for another plot beat to come? Hopefully more answers will come for some of these questions. I like asking questions myself, it can feel very rewarding when they're answered. (The flashy action is also very rewarding xD)

      I... don't agree with this. You're right, real life often doesn't have happy endings, but that's a big part of why media _should._ People, especially those who have experienced hardships, deserve to be seen and acknowledged in media and shown that things aren't always going to be bad. People who are "weird" or "different" (the monsters and villains of the story) *deserve* a chance at happiness, or at the very least, to have hope for the future. Don't get me wrong, I like me some sad media. A lot of my favorite shows are the ones that make me cry. But in this case I do not see how the narrative would have been benefitted from an ending where Nimona was dead.
