Glenda Jackson Defends the Welfare System Passionately
Переглядів 4648 років тому
A wonderful colloquy from former Labour MP Glenda Jackson (Hampstead & Kilburn) on the principle necessity, not to mention humanity, for protecting benefits and pensions in one of her final addresses to the Coalition government while Ian Duncan Smith helmed the DWP into abject penury.
Glenda Jackson forecasting DWP's Failures with Universal Credit (07 July 2014)
Переглядів 4,8 тис.8 років тому
Academy Award winning actress, Glenda Jackson (former firebrand Labour MP for Hampstead & Highgate [Kilburn] ) having gone through the wars with Iain Duncan Smith's disgraceful Tory grandstanding, delivers a speech on the shortcomings of Universal Credit to those lowliest on the income scale. She touches on the fantasy of the 2014 cuts put forth that only served to be, in light of what we now k...
Glenda Jackson Outstanding Contribution to the Defendant Anonymity Debate (Jun 08 2010)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.8 років тому
After Crispin Blunt gave the game away early on, saying Defendant Anonymity was about "the crime of rape," former MP for Hampstead and Kilburn (Highgate), Glenda Jackson challenged the government on what this would say to victims of rape in a socially progressive moment in the Commons hardly lauded in the papers given her piercing acumen for the Tory party game playing.

My mother. A man sat down next to me on a public bus and exposed himself. She said, what did you do? My father laughed, Susie met a bug! This is the treatment I got from my FAMILY.

Sexual violence can also be verbal. My father. And with verbal assault you can’t prove it. There is no physical evidence. God I wish she was here.

I read the book 'Elizabeth Is Missing' and then watched Glenda Jackson in the film last year, they are both great, I recommend them. Glenda Jackson was amazing, she fell asleep today. The DWP are run by Satan, in 2013 after bankrupting myself caring for someone I needed help from my nation, they Satanically confused me as when I should sign on while I was weak in deep mourning and then sanctioned me leaving me penniless, it has had profound consequences on my life but to them it means nothing. Thank you Glenda for standing up for us against this dark cloud of the DWP as you put it.

I work for a charity helping people claim benefits and sorting issues with their claims and I can assure you nothing has changed. If anything it has gotten worse. It’s disgusting how they treat people.

Years later and Universal Credit is still a universal evil for anyone in need. Now the state of ESA is as bad - people who have had a sickness claim dismissed for whatever reason in the past can now not even be considered for benefit without proof that the new case is significantly worse than the previous one. If you have depression and your illness for some reason improved and so you stopped getting the benefit you can not get ESA again unless you can prove that your new case of depression or any other mental difficulty is worse than the previous illness that you had recovered from. There is no understanding of this kind of mental illness and people are still suffering and dying because of this kind of evil. My neighbour lost his leg because of diabetes and was recovering for a year until he had another assessment and his benefit was cut. After realising that society cared so little for him he lost the will to live, stopped looking after himself and his condition properly and stayed in his home without coming out for weeks - we eventually called the police and the hospital tried to save him with another amputation but he developed internal bleeding and died because of this system that cares only for hounding people with no real chances of getting a job without the government working to really find work for them or leaving them some dignity and peace if they cannot work instead of persecuting them and hounding them to look for work when no employer would want hem. It is evil.

Ms. Jackson is absolutely correct. I've read the comment in the MEN where the readers castigate women who have been raped/attacked because of the hour they were out, that they had been drinking, that there wasn't a man around to protect them--you'd think one was reading the Times of India or Pakistan going by how common English people spit on attack victims.

Universal Credit sounds Marxist - credit all round, all equal, all the same. Why does a socialist ex-government minister like her not like it?

Signing on is always crap, always has been. You have got to have some incentive, tragic as it may be, when in hardship, to earn something.

Alex, another cretin who hides behind a nom de plume! I presume you subscribe to the Gordon Gekko party, where the love of money is paramount. Mrs T. ( probably your hero) society was totally abhorrent to her. It’s everyone for themselves, fuck the the poor, mentally infirm, have you ever boiled an egg you horrible sociopath. You care nothing for others, and don’t giveme this bolloks about living in a Meritocracy. your expensive private education was wasted on an imbecile like you.

Glenda is such a lovely lady who cares and will continue to work hard to help people. The DWP and the tory party are determined to keep the people poor. Why is no one helping people. I am sick to death of the tory party bleeping on about how universal credit even the UN have written a statement and still that is being ignored i just don't understand why the tory party and the DWP are not challenged and told by our Queen to stop turtureing our people I believe the tables will turn and they will get what they deserve

How prophetic Glenda Jackson was. And now we find out that the DWP has spent 40 million quid in court cases appealing against claimants who have successfully appealed against being sanctioned - BIZARRE !!!! On what planet do the Tories live? Sad that Glenda has now retired and been replaced by the timid Tulip but nice to see an early contribution here by the present Shadow Works and Pensions Minister Debbie Abrahams. JC4PM.
