Water Heater won't stay lit - Here's why
I've been asked to replace our Reem tank. The difference between stores here is $700 that's alot! I'm going to look it over but hard to justify that kind of money
Absolutely love your videos I can tell you do good work
Glad you like them!
do you offer any apprenticeships?
We do not at this time
I just had Day And Night give me prices for 3 units. Starting from $2500-$6000!
They can get pricey!
Saudi fix it you can press the reset button
Then what do you do with it pops again?
Brother! Please tell me your family homeschools. This was flawless! Well done and a thank you for adding to our curriculum. :)
Thank you!
I've never had a water heater relief valve lift to relieve pressure in my 50 years of home ownership. If the community water supply line does not have a check valve in the line the water heater pressure can not exceed the line pressure of the water supply.
This is true. Without a check valve or a pressure regulation valve you should not have the conditions present for a thermal expansion tank.
@@SmedleyPlumbing Additionally, heating up a cold hot water heater is a rare event for me. I have cut it off when I was on vacation a couple of times but I rarely do.
Awesome video! Regarding the glass that you mentioned that lines the inside of the tank. Would it be safe to say then, that if I were to flush out my tank (for maintenance) and I see glass come out, then my water tank should be replaced soon?
It might be hard to differentiate the glass pieces from scale. If your hot water is starting to come out rusty, that is a sign that failure is imminent.
I suspect box stores have a cap on how much they'll pay for a "pro" water heater. If that's true, then the manufacturer will cut their costs so that they can still make a profit. I'm not a plumber, but this is good information. I'm sure I'll be replacing my water heater in the next few years, so thank you.
Exactly
We've been complaining to our village water utility for years about low water pressure. It is always under 45 psi. They tell us that we are not downhill far enough from the water tower to have any higher pressure. I think that excuse is garbage. We need to increase our pressure, not worry about expansion.
You can buy a pressure boosting pump to solve that problem.
Where in Southern California can I find a pro plumbing supply store, to find this grade of water heater? Thanks. Only 9 minutes into the video, in case locations are mentioned near the end,or later in the video, thanks!
Google is your friend with this one.
Anyone else on the toilet while watching this???😂
I am!
I liked this video. Thanks for making it. Why did you see the difference of the nipples before you removed them. They looked similar in size. But you see more of the nipple on the box store heater. Insulation thickness is not the same. Box stores don’t appear to have the same
We noticed the same thing!
Yes I what one please send me one
This one has been given away
Very helpful. Thanks. I keep finding that the pumps fail after only a few years, some make it only one season. I've never drilled a weep hole. Could that be the problem? Also, in the dry season here in northern California, I remove my pump, clean the outside, and store it in my tool room. Does that sound about right?
Could be. Under use and over use are the two worst conditions for a sump pump
for years our municipality did not require backflow preventers on the incoming cold water line. so any pressure build up caused by the hot water tank pushed the pressure/water back out onto the municipal water main.. when they made it mandatory that all water systems (including existing) have a backflow preventer, if the home did not all ready have an expansion tank, an expansion tank was installed at the time of the installation of the backflow preventer.. .
That's about right!
you say it will build enormous pressure... not really.... it will only build pressure until the pressure relief valve on the water tanks blows off.. so only builds up pressure to what ever the relief valve is set too.. for most tanks that would be about 150 psi.
If they work!
Why are some wires on top of the insultaion...do they need to be???
Some hold the insulation in place.
Easy is a word I've taken out of my plumbing vocabulary and almost my life's vocabulary
Yep!
Great video, just kill the music
Thanks for the feedback
I was very interested in watching this video. The repetitive background track so annoyed my wife that I ended up stopping it. Maybe I’ll try again when I’m alone.
Thanks for the feedback
repeated stuff way too much - coulda been under 30 mins easy
We have two shorter versions and nobody likes to watch those....
@@SmedleyPlumbing I have not watched any of your other videos, but somehow I doubt a shorter video is the problem. Or at least not the largest one. A concise format is usually the preference for 'most people', unless all the extra time and detail actually matter and move it along properly. Editing the video so that you have both parts being shown, taken apart, and weighed at the same time instead of going back and forth from one to the other would be a great start IMO. Along with text being put into the video for a running tally instead of going to the white board. Voice over it with an actual script that is not needlessly repetitive. I assume you wanna do this yourself as easy as possible - but with YT vids, going the extra mile and spending some $ on the product you put out can make a massive difference in how people respond to a video. (I did like the video and give thumbs up, but I just like to nitpick things I guess.)
You literally bought the cheapest box store model. Typical plumber trying to make it like what they provide is worth more. Sorry but this is the stupidest comparison.
We literally bought the equivalent. Both had 6-year warranties.
the plastic drain valve is the quickest tell.
Yep
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun playing with it. I want one. I can send things to my neighbor lol. I want one.
Time to build one!
No, I don't think plumbing is easy at all. Two things I never mess with. Electricals, and liquids under pressure.
Yep!
excellently explained. Our 15+ yr old water htr is tripping the hi temp reset switch.New thermostat didn't fix it.blowing sediment out of the tank worked for a month or so.We have 240V but am not getting 18.75 amps at the two legs, more like 17.5-17.7 with about .3 amps disparity between legs. Bottom element test about the same. Continuity test OK of course. Good grounds. What gives here?
If the element fails near the tip then you can get equal readings from each leg. If you've cleaned the sediment and replace the thermostats then I would move to replacing the elements. Make sure you put the covers back on afterwards so that the thermostats are reading the water temp instead of the room air temp.
Why the difference in annual operating costs? $227 big box vs $320 professional but it’s stated to be more efficient?
Those energy guide stickers are wildly inaccurate.
I think I'd want to put a couple screws right through the fittings for insurance.
Safety third
I’ve had to deal with a leaky bathroom sink faucet. The hot water kept dripping. Wouldn’t turn completely off. So I turned the water off and took apart the hot water faucet and took the cartridge thing out and went to the hardware store to get another. Found the right one and put it in. Still dripping. So after about another month of this, I figured I’d just replace the whole faucet. Told my wife “this shouldn’t take long” (big mistake - never say something won’t take long!) I took the old faucet out and the new one had a replacement drain as well. I figured I’d go ahead and swap that out since it came with a new one. I don’t fit under a sink, easily. I have to fold up a bit and it’s not fun to say the least. I couldn’t get the tailpiece off the sink for nothing. I’m turning and it just goes around and around, not loosening. My frustration factor is going up. I was putting so much force on the sink from underneath, it starts to come up out of the cabinet. (The caulk let go and the sink is now free). I had a lightbulb moment - just take the darn sink completely out, sit it in the floor and then wrestle with the tailpiece and get it off then. I had to turn the water off again and take the water lines off. Well, the hot water side wouldn’t complely shut off. It kept dripping. Back to the hardware store to get two new shutoff valves. This time I had to shut off the water to the whole house. I discovered the water wouldn’t shut completely off at the main valve by the house. So I turned the water off at the meter down by the road. Now the water is completely off. I replace the two valves under the sink and finally get the tailpiece off the bottom of the sink (it ended up breaking so I was able to just get the whole thing out). Put the new one on. Not so fast! I needed silicone or plumber’s putty. Looked in my work area for silicone or something. Didn’t have any. Trip #3 to the hardware store. Now I’m back with some putty and I put the drain in. I get the sink installed and turn the water on. Turns out a piece of washer from inside the old cutoff valve lodged in the hot water pipe so I didn’t have pressure. I manage to dig out the piece of washer lodged in the pipe. So I turn the water back on. Still no pressure on the hot water side. So I take the aerator off and find bits and pieces of the washer in there. I turn the water on without the aerator and even more bits come out from the faucet. So I put the aerator on and everyting works! And no drips since it’s a new faucet! This took all evening and three trips to the store. Now I’m sore from getting in and out from under my sink. I told my wife I don’t care how much someone would pay me, I would not be a plumber for ANY amount of money!
It's not for the faint of heart that's for sure
Hello sir i am plumber from india
Ok good
Didn't the pro grade nipples start bending first. At that point, the glass was compromised
We can't see when the box store unit started swelling. It popped the jacket it swelled so much.
Great video thank you for taking the time to make it. Not trying to bash you or anyone else but alot of supply houses won't sell to the general public or if they do it's not at a pro plumbers price ( which I totally understand) The average joes price is going to be way more than the price that the pros get. Where I live in CT you have to have an account or license to get your price. I have a friend who called me a couple of weeks ago. He got a quote for a 40 gallon gas fired water heater install and taking away the old water heater for $4,000 ouch
Most supply houses will sell to the public.
What if I’m not getting 240 on the bottom only on top and I replaced the element on the bottom
Make sure the bottom thermostat is calling for heat before checking
i'm seeing the pro grade unit for sale around $800 to $900. Where in the world did he buy one for $656?!?!
Independence, MO Ferguson Supply.
Thanks. The Ferguson supply in Michigan wont sell to homeowners @SmedleyPlumbing
AO. Smith outsourcing signature model to Chinese manufacturing
Possibly
This was a great video helping me understand thermal expansion tanks. This guy is a great communicator!
Thanks!
Hiring Canadians? This crew is awesome. 😎 great work guys.
Yes they are!
Good job 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I do hvac. You can keep plumbing.
Love it!
Wow! You guys are amazing!
Thank you so much!
Outstanding info! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks!
Interesting thanks for sharing this information I’ll remember this
Thanks!
I got a 50 gallon State premiere from my local supplier for $50.00 because it had a dent in the outer case 😊.
Score!
My shop vac is by far one of my most, and favorite tool i use on the job
So versatile!
How much something like this job costs
These run about $4,000 with this program.
I'm getting a new water heater done in like March or April 2025 and I'm making sure I get a thermal expansion tank. I don't have one now. I'm learning a lot from your videos. Ty! I subscribed also
Sounds great!
Pro grade actually failed first. The lines above bent inward and that would broke pipes above it and that would've been a water mess
Possibly
Thank you for your excellent video God Bless You
Thank you too!
You create galvanization. Electrolysis is intentional addition of electricity to create galvanization. Dielectric means it's insulated. So for psychos that ground circuits to water pipes, you won't create extra galvanization by putting a charge on the heater.
Yep
