Water Heater won't stay lit - Here's why
I would have liked to see you weigh the bare tanks after the shell, etc. was off. I suspect it would mirror the weights you did after removing the gas valve, etc. One other thing that might have been interesting would to have cut a hold in the tanks after the failure and measure the thickness of the steel. Non the less, it was an interesting video.
Interesting info. Have no idea why Smedley put music in the video, really hard to concentrate on what the man is saying.
It's just my wife and I in an all-electric house with grid-tied solar, so we use a very small Black & Decker flash water heater. It heats as fast as the hot water can get to the shower, with as much 105 F water as we want. It never runs out, because it has no tank. Uses zero electricity if no hot water is running. Best of all, we have never had an electric bill since we installed the solar. It does need 30 Amps @ 220 volts, but that's no different from a standard electric water heater. That is a lot of electricity, but we only use it for a few minutes per day.
Shivering shitsicles Batman I feel like I've been shot at and missed and shit at and hit! Wow that grand slam yam cam is amazazing and it sure would be put to Alot of proper use! The only question I have for you is why haven't you sent me my grand slam yam cam yet?
Maybe I don't comprehend but this is only true in the case of AOS?
Good job , after 50 years we moved to a house with an expansion tank and I knew what it is for. Thank you
QUESTION: my house is a 15 years old manufactured home, with 5 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms, lately the plastic pen under the water heater has some water on it, so I know that the 15 year old water heater is about to quit, the model I have is rheem 50 gallons 240 volts, 3500 watts. They don't make that model anymore. will 50 gallons 3800 watts be compatible with my double 20 amps breakers? I would appreciate your answer!! thank you!!!!!!!
You sure it's not a 30 amp double pole breaker?
@@SmedleyPlumbing yes! it's two 20s with a metal piece on top!
First I switched to a tankless heater 10 years ago and will never go back to a tank Second The government does not want your tanked heater to last more then 10 years so you have to buy the ones with all the new designs that come out. Just like auto's
I believe the manufacturer benefits far more than the govt.
Look i know youre a pro, i would personally feel better about your safety if you were behind a baricade if some kind. I knew a family who lost all but 6 kids from a water tank explosion, please be safe
Hydronic pressure testing is actually pretty safe.
Don’t ever buy stuff like that from Home Depot or Lowe’s
Agreed
Uh, Are you showing the EXACT same model numbers. I highly suspect that they are DIFFERENT model numbers. So, if they are DIFFERENT MODEL numbers, then of course they are not the same.
Of course they are different model numbers. But nobody believes that these different model numbers are that different.
The music is irritating . I’m 72 years old and can barely hear you! It’s so loud. No more music!
Thanks for the feedback
Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you so much for this video… changed my view 100%
Glad it helped!
perfect video man thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
i dont like this filter its to dark
Yeah we think so too.
The problem is no plumber in my area would sell me that pro water heater for less than $1300 uninstalled.
Just buy directly from a supplier.
@@SmedleyPlumbing Local plumbers also surcharged $400 to install customer supply equipment. Had one already doing a repair on my water line asked him for a quote and it was more than I paid for the heater itself. I also purchased the flexible lines. Seriously it was only a half hour job, ended up doing it myself. Either he did not want to do the job, or he thought I was stupid. But really, in my neighborhood most would not think twice and just pay it I am sure he stayed busy doing other work. Yeah, it's a Rheem smart electric smart one with the auto shut off many had problems with, but so far mine has worked flawlessly over the past few years despite no service, no rods, no flushes. The previous store bought one I installed a "whirlpool" was also never serviced and lasted 18 years. I will admit however the original also neglected Bradford White went 26 years. I am considering actually flushing my Rheem for a change come springtime and at least peaking at the anode rod to see how quickly it's degrading. Yes, the old heaters were very heavy with sediment. Knowing what I know now I will get them at a real supply store, thanks. Paying a little extra is no problem but paying a lot extra is.
I wanted to watch this whole video but it’s so slow- you don’t need to tell us twice/in detail what’s happening/ that you’re writing prograde on the pro grade heater.. Will watch if you speed up the pace for future videos
Watch it on 1.5 times speed. We also have two shorter versions on the channel.
I see you , but I don’t see the have it self , is that a joke ???!!!
Huh?
Not sure why I'm diggin this either! Now I want to pull my toilets just to replace the wax rings for the hell of it. I want A#1 "SQUISH"!¡!😅
Feels so good when it happens!
Only need to change temp on bottom thermostat!
Both stats should be set the same even though most of the temp is set from the bottom stat.
Water heater tanks are glass lined for obvious reasons. "Sacrificial anode rods" are easy to google. Those plastic lined nipples exiting the tank are NOT rated as die-electric unions/connectors...the plastic inside just protects the nipples. Die-electric flex connectors are normally the insulator for the break in electric conduction (read the labels). Science hasn't completely nailed down what causes electrolysis.....I've seen countless "up to code" water systems fail from pin-holes and green and white fuzz completely incapsulating a copper 90. And yes...I've seen completely out of code systems that work just fine after 20-30 yrs.....unpredictable at best. Soft water is a must if you want your water systems and fixtures to last MUCH longer.
Leaks happen but after 25 years I've only seen electrolysis twice. But I've seen water heaters installed with FIP's thousands of times.
Soft water in a salt system equals salt in the tank....corrosion galore. It'll mess up your tank and corroded it insanely faster!
@ Incorrect, if there’s salt you’ll taste it. If you taste it you have an issue with your softener. My water heater is 11 years old…. Zero sediment, no issues. New sacrificial anode coming today…. It’s forth one. Get educated before making false claims.
Ain't nobody got time to watch this...
Nobody is saying you have to......
I didn't know there was a difference. But then again everything is trash now days anyway
There's absolutely a difference.
When i first bought my home, i had a root issue in my pipes. I had a plumber come and cut up all the roots. He reccommened roebic root killer 3 times every year. Its been 5yrs. Never had another back up/slow drain issue.
What does the before and after look like with a camera?
Wax seals are so old school. I would use one of those rubber seal type rings.
Yeah that's not a great idea. Wax has worked great for years. No need to try to reinvent the wheel with other products that don't have the 100 year track record that wax has.
Mmmm. Smells like money.
Lol. Yup
Sunday will be replacing my 10-year-old Glacier Bay with the Toto Drake.
Nice choice!
I'm tired of manufacturers shaving pennies off the price of products just to make sure they barely make it thru the warranty period. All the while tripling the price. I've never seen so much inflation than in the price of water heaters over the years. Planned obsolescence should be a crime.
It's the way things are today unfortunately.
That weld that failed was because this unit was built on Friday afternoon 😂
Lol
Outstanding Video! Do you have a recommendation between the AO Smith Pro and the Bradford White? I have had my AO Smith for 14 years but am considering installing a new one. Thanks
Both are solid choices!
@ Thanks for your response!
Seems most the weight difference is the anode rod and then the drain valve and panel cover. Doing the math, that means the tank has to weigh very close to the same. Think im gonna go w box store and a brass valve. Then replace the anode rode in a year or so and then probably every few years after that because we have very hard water in MO.
The tanks alone have a significant difference as well.
@SmedleyPlumbing i am just replacing my big box water heater from ao smith after 12 years. Not bad and til now, I didnt know how to maintain it or anything maintenance or any anode rod lol. I beleive it am gonna replace it with same one and replace the rod every couple years. The hard water here is insane
I like your comparisons: I’d add that getting aluminum into the water supply that customers are ingesting ! The aluminum rod is a health hazard to the long term brain getting more aluminum into the brain matter that has been found to effect the brain from several conditions Alzheimer’s dementia! So they are raising the rise into the population! Very bad ! Less aluminum
Yikes!
My heater is from 2004. considering a replacement now after 20 years. A Bradford White.
Let that thing live as long as it can. They don't make them like that anymore.
Why the expansion tank goes in the supply side instead of the hot side.? Hot water rise to the top.
Hot water rises, correct. But expansion pressure affects the entire water system.
Air test? Supposed to be hydrostatic test. Less dangerous. Mostly water helps, should be solid water.
Yes but we didn't have a compressor for that. So we said "hold my beer" and improvised.
Myth busters defeated the relief valve, and did runaway firing. Launced the water heater through 2 floors of the test house. If you were anywhere in the house you would have passed in the burn unit. Important valve is understated.
Very underrated!
hard to watch, video bouncing everywhere
Thanks for the feedback
Where’s the electric water heater?
We chose to test gas units for the video
Considering the water pressure in a house should be ~60psi, your test was hilarious, but useless. The water heater in my house has been there for over 20 years. We have naturally soft water and scale isn't an issue here. We fully expect another 20+ years of service from it. We bought it at Lowe's.
Certain conditions can happen that create insane pressure in a home. Popped heaters are more common than we'd like to see.
I just had my 2 yrold Lowe’s water heater with a pro water heater. Lowe’s $390.00 pro $1800.
Lowe's - No installation included Pro Grade - Professionally Installed
I've watched dozens of these videos and the only ones who say the root killers don't work are plumbers. Imagine that
The only ones that do are paid to say so.
Yam cannon!!
They are so fun!
I have a 40 gallon GE gas hour water heater. I installed it in 2004. It's still kicking out hot water.
You’ve got a good one!
I am a plumber apprentice and I absolutely love the way you teach and break things down and the simplest of ways
Thanks!
Like most manufacturing nowadays there’s only a few places that actually manufacture something and a lot of them just slap different stickers on for different manufacturers, but they’re the same or almost the same product. Sadly. Glad to see these are still different… for now
Yep
We're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna. Don't talk so much, just do; give a little overview and then describe what is happening as you are doing it. I do a lot of skipping over that excessive introduction to the demonstration, to get to the demonstration. Notwithstanding, I love your videos, very informative.
Thanks for the feedback
@@SmedleyPlumbing Didn't mean to sound harsh, I do love your content and have confirmed many things with your demonstrations, and I have subscribed. Good stuff!
when my 1950s era gas water heater gave up the ghost, I was going to get another gas one but to bring everything up to current code to stay with gas, the expense made me decide to convert to electric. I got a 50-gallon Bradford White from the local plumbing supply store. I was about 1-1/2 times the cost of the GE at Lowes but all of the ones at Lowes had plastic fittings. My BW has copper elements and all brass fittings. I didn't want plastic as the "contractor grade" water heater in my sister's house in Houston (not known for cold weather) had a fitting that cracked while she was out of town for a week and with its being in the attic, it managed to do several tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the first and second floors including damage to dozens of photo albums. You never regret going with quality,
Exactly
Great video.
Thanks!
The insulation is not Styrofoam its Polyolefin. It is a foam, but it is self-extinguishing as opposed to Styrofoam that is not.
Good to know!
