Green Heart Family Farm
United States
Приєднався 24 лют 2019
We are a family of five; Jarvis, Tina, Arya, James, and Ivy. We purchased 50 acres in late 2019 to pursue our dream of establishing a homestead farm. So far we have jumped into building and moving into a yurt, adding grazing animals, and jumping into farm life with both feet.
We still have a lot of work to do but we are so excited to work hard, improve our property, and live the best, most fulfilling life we can.

Planting Our First Silvopasture Tree Rows
Переглядів 2994 місяці тому
This video covers our work from Feb 2024 to Apr 2024 planting 431 trees with the goal of developing "silvopasture", a incorporation of trees into livestock pastures. Our goals included adding shade and tree fodder to our pastures, designing the tree rows such that they double as livestock fencing, and to include the planting of fruit and nut trees for eventual food production. Worm Composting Toilet System - December 2023 (Update 2)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.8 місяців тому
Another update on our vermicompsting toilet system; at this point the system has been active for 3.5 years. Main new news from this year: 1) Needed to clean out and maintain more clearance at the drainage of the greywater. 2) Alternating between the two waste tanks quarterly is resulting in fantastic performance and plenty of processing power from the worms to serve our family of 5.

What do you do when that ibc tank is full?
Check out the follow-up videos, we go over some troubleshooting about that over the years of operating it. Long story short, we've figured out how to operate it, alternating between two tanks, so we never get full and run out of space.
I think it would be beneficial to close some of the open areas in the chicken tractor to reduce the effect of cold on egg production.
As usual, thanks for the update on the greenhouse. It's looking great! Lots of progress so far. Good family involvement.
Thanks! Yeah I was glad the kids were able to come help during this phase.
I think creating a dropdown for the pipe along with an L bend fitting should help with the clogging. The bottom of the dropdown area would be gravel bedding then soil on top. If you plant wetlands plants that would filter the ground faster as well.
Yep, these are great ideas, thanks!
What size is this yurt?
30ft diameter from Pacific Yurts
I really like the design
Thank you!
those poplar post will rot away in less than a year.
How was this method compared to others harvest wise
We're only 1 early harvest in, so we'll see; I'm hoping these big logs turn out to be more prolific than our smaller logs.
You have a good water plan and explained it well. What is the latest on the old pink house?
Thanks! Old pink house is acting as a workshop; the miter saw bench and work tables are getting a good amount of work while I prep materials. Haven't got around to some of the other improvements I'd like to do; plumbing, electrical, etc.
Thats a beautiful yurt! I wonder how many meters pf diameter has? Thx!
30 foot diameter from Pacific Yurts; thank you for the kind words!
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thats great! I guess is good enough for a family like yours, enjoy it!!, 🥳🥳🥳🥳 thanks for your answer. 😊
Is there a website out there that shows the step by step for this?
Not that I know of; we followed the instructions that came from our yurt manufacturer, Pacific Yurts.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thank you, looks great
This will be a very strong greenhouse! Great work!
Thank you!
Nice job on the Greenhouse, did you mill all that lumber as well? Your children are growing so fast, it must be all that homegrown food.
Thanks! Yes, I milled all the lumber for the greenhouse. The kids are definitely eating and growing!
What's your breed of black bear? Looks extra friendly.
Olaf is a Newfoundland; he is the sweetest boy <3
Nice. Wondering if I should become friends with my arborist & dare to ask for arboreal castoffs such as you have used here .....
This video & those like it are why I come to youtube 😊
@@jennyjohnson5428 Thank you for the kind comments!
how did you treat the pasture so they didn't get reinfected?
Nothing at all; they came to our farm infected because they were kept in poor conditions. Keeping the pigs out on pasture for years after this video was filmed, including having 20+ piglets, we never saw another case of mange mites.
I have found that the best deer deterrent is a Winchester, even if you are not too skilled with your Winchester it sure makes a point like no other deer deterrent and the bigger the better, Remington will also work. Lead poisoning is a terrible thing. Since I live near others, I use only chicken wire, barb wire, and my latest fishing line fence, and I have no landscaping left and will not reinvest in that again! The deer love my cucumber leaves, and Iam not too happy about that ether.
Great video. Planning a similar install. I saw a different video where guy make his hearth with hardiboard like you, then pavers, then slate tile. Your approach (without the pavers) seems easier, but do you have any thoughts on that? Other than watch you-tube videos, how does one know how a hearth should be designed? Thanks for these wonderful videos you've created.
Glad you like it! I've been perfectly happy with the slate tile, and I don't think I'm missing anything without a layer of pavers. Maybe they just wanted to build up some height for the stove pad? I recall researching recommended clearances for the stove during the planning stages. You've got it, good luck!
Switching tanks every month or so helps to regulate temperature. The waste breaking down creates heat so in summer you dont want to overheat it and in winter you add to both so they dont get too cold
Yes, switching tanks more often seems to really help the system!
Hi! What a lovely place! Really good kitchen! It fits really well, I wonder how many meters the your Yurt is? Thanks! 🎉
Thank you! 30ft diameter, so about 10m diameter.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thanks 🙏🏽 it’s lovely space
Hi there, I love your deco and yurt. Looks amazing and exactly the set up we would like to build on our property. I have a few questions about the deck, is there some way we can speak?
Thanks for the kind words. We're really busy lately but I could possibly set up time aside time for a consult if you're interested in that.
Oh nooo at 9:35 Toby said, “I knew that was gonna happen!” Looks so hard to do with one person!
Great work on the greenhouse! You showed a lot of detail of what you did. I look forward to your next video with the trusses.
Thanks! Really excited to get those trusses up there.
What state are you guys in? Kinda looks like Washington.
We're in Western Oregon, so yep, Pacific Northwest!
For all this work, a RMH is much more efficient. Look into it. Best Regards!
I watched lots of rocket mass heater videos in previous years, and find them very interesting, but I find the small, modular footprint of the wood stove much easier to work with in a yurt. The large barrel, all the clay, etc. for a RMH doesn't seem like a good fit on a raised wooden foundation in a yurt.
Grea! Greetings from Denmark t
Hello, welcome! My ancestors are from Denmark! Family name "Jensen"
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm ja I am a german Livingstone in denmark. And my grandma was from polen. So Kind of multikulti 😄🫣 Your yurt is a model of how to build beautifully. I am trying tp figure out how to sew the Roof
Super schön ( beautiful) I live your stil
1. A flushing toilet makes compost too wet. 2. Worms don't need much water as long as they are fed plant matter 3. Worms don't eat poo. 4. Those wood chips are too big to rot quickly 5. It is going to be hard to empty those containers. Take out the flushing toilet, replace it with a bucket, use saw dust and make a raised compost pile for it all. Build a seperate worm farm for food waste.
I agree with some of your points and disagree with others. I've filmed two follow-up episodes in the years since that first installation video. If you want to take the time to watch them and then have a discussion, I'd be interested. I'm leery, though, based on your comment that "worms don't eat poo". That's just false, and if you think that's true, there's really nothing else to discuss around this system. I'm happy to engage in constructive criticism and discussion, but I can't tell if you're in that category.
Our family is enjoying learning from your videos, so glad it popped up in our search for building our Yurt, thanks for making them educational, entertaining, informative, and We appreciate you sharing your families journey. Many blessings to all of you.
Thank you, let us know about your journey as it develops!
Love seeing your progress, truly inspiring!!
Thank you for such kind words!
This has really given us more insight on how to build ours. Much appreciated.
Glad it is helpful! We're here sitting in our yurt now, and love it!
Thank you for all The helpful advice.
<3 thank you for the kind words
Thanks for sharing!
Great update. I'm sure that greenhouse will be a helpful addition to your homestead.
Thanks! Yes, we're looking forward to scaling up our gardening.
Hi dearest green family. Such a great video and happy to see your dream being constructed.. also my dream we recently bought land in Italy with next plan being to erect something close to this.. wondered where the exterior rafters roll was purchased from. Would be super grateful if any information, most products seem to be USA based. Many thanks and keep up the great content Already subscribed
Thank you! Our entire yurt package was purchased from Pacific Yurts. Good luck!
Can this be done permit Free?
Not a safe thing to stand below,if that pipe had fallen or both it’s possible someone would have been hit
I hate Deer with all my heart. 🤣🤣 I have been fighting these guys for 6 years and I gave up.
Great update on your tree planting. You did a lot of research and planning into this. It looks like Ivy is growing fast.
Thanks! We feel so good about the tree planting; an exciting investment in the future.
Depending on how much sunlight you get in the winter, a black roof/lid for the tank compartment might really make a difference in worm activity. Its surprising how much heat you can cultivate with just something like that.
You should plant some fruit trees a bit downstream of the drainage area.
You need trench covers over the pipe to stop the dirt from getting in the hole and more fall will help. Then all so need to add a disruption tank and have 3 pipes coming out of that. Heaps of diagrams on google images mate.
Mind sharing the exact name of a diagram you like? I appreciate help, but your comment wasn't really helpful but just discouraging.
The effort is good but this system will not work. Every flush introduces too much water. The leach field will clog up quickly and the worms won’t do well in the totes due to water.
You realize the system is over 4 years old now?
Wonderful. Keep an eye on the kids when they are nearby though.
Your leachate area would be a great flower bed! Daffodils, tulips, etc
I'm a little late commenting this time! Great update on the lambs. You have a lot of them at this time. Hopefully you will have an update on the rest of the farm in the near future.
Thanks! More to come on other farm projects!
Wow! Your land has become so fruitful and beautiful! What a joy it is to watch, thank u for sharing w us!
Thank you for the encouraging comment!
I used to go to school with one of your kids. (I dont remember her name lol) and we still live in the area. The ice storm was so funny.
What a great birthing year. Looking forward to seeing the Greenhouse build and the new garden.
Thanks! We are really excited about this spring and summer!
On the farm we used a Lilly patch to help absorb the grey water . With the amount of worm in the ground the Lilly would overtake the area parity quick.
