Airspeed in the landing pattern in a Cardinal 177b
Переглядів 5763 роки тому
It's kind of like that old commercial, "how many licks does it take to get the center of a Tootsie Pop"? How many times do you look at the airspeed indicator while in the pattern to ensure you don't get slow and potentially in a stall/spin situation? Just for fun... I counted. #flying #landing #cessna

Morgan and I fly down to Elkhart, Indiana in the Cessna Cardinal 177B to have lunch with our friend, Stevie D, in Mishawaka at his family-owned restaurant, Doc Pierce's. Along the way we deal with thick haze from Canadian forest fires and talk about Morgan's early days working for Stevie D at Chess King at the mall in Grand Rapids back in the day when you could smoke at the counter, buy parachu...

Cessna 177 flight to Marshall, Michigan, a bit of flight training and dinner at Schuler's

It was a beautiful day so Morgan and I took a quick flight from Ionia to Marshall for dinner at Schuler's Restaurant where they will come pick you up from the airport! Also began showing Morgan how to run the radios and the basics of flight (in case she ever had to land the plane on her own).

We had planned to fly to South Haven... but no courtesy cars available to grab lunch somewhere. Then tried Midland. Same thing. So instead, we rented a car at KBIV near Holland and popped down to Saugatuck for lunch and a view of the Lake Michigan Coast. Perfect day for it.

Had hoped to fly the Cardinal up to Traverse City to have the new Garmin G5 installed but they were delayed, so instead Morgan and I picked a spot on the map and flew there. In today's flight it was to Gladwin, Michigan. The manager at the airport was great! Gave us a courtesy car and we grabbed lunch (ate it from the car) at Mack's on Main. A little Dad time and a flaming golf cart in Cadillac, Michigan
Переглядів 2793 роки тому
Flight from Ionia up to Cadillac in the Cessna 177B to spend some time with my Dad. While there, someone yelled "fire!" We turned to see flames and billowing smoke off the runway. Your heart goes up into your throat, fearing the worst. Luckily, it was a gas-powered golf cart that decided to self-immolate. Nobody hurt... except the golf cart.

Taken from the Cessna Cardinal 177B on 8/30/20 at 5pm from 2,500 feet with video slowed to 75% speed. A little bumpy that day so the steadiness isn't ideal. But... it was still a fun flight. Between Morgan and I's Forkflight videos, I plan to drop a few of these aerials along the way if you cool with that!

On a hot mid-Michigan afternoon we took a quick flight to Muskegon (KMKG) to have lunch at the Plane Watch Food Park, a food truck park near the runway at Muskegon County Airport. A shout out to Vision Air Center for the use of the crew car! As you'll discover... I don't like bees. :)

Just for fun, I took this video from the Cardinal at 2,500 ft over Grand Rapids Michigan today around 5:15pm EST. It starts at Reeds Lake on a NW track, crossing over downtown and then a bit of the west side. I slowed it down by 25% shot on a 4K camera. I may try this again with a different camera and camera setting to slow it down further so it's smooth. Also, I think I need to shoot early mor...

In the 80's I like many made fun of these. Today it would be my first choice in a GA factory built plane. Amazing what some years can do to improve the perspective. The Cardinal's reputation was destroyed by under informed journalists looking to create a sensational story and by gullible pilots who bought the bs. Except for the first production year, entirely undeserved. Not entirely deserved for the first year.

I'm about to get a check out in a cardinal. I was hoping to hear more data, i.e. instead of "I'm a little fast" say something along the lines of your desired speed at that point in the pattern. What are your RPM and manifold settings. Stuff like that would be great. Thanks for posting up videos for those of us looking to learn about the different planes!

Great video. Thanks. Folks, I have to be honest... Using VR and clunky controllers for IFR on either VATSIM or Pilotedge is a real PITA. The views in the Head set are cool, but trying to manipulate dials and knobs on a GNS 530, G1000, tablet, flight deck etc while talking to ATC is extremely annoying. Too many misfires while twisting in altitudes, freqs etc. I seriously doubt if the controllers as they are designed now will EVER be acceptable for live ATC where you can't pause the sim. I often find myself going in and out of headset to write clearances. Not fun. Perhaps in the future there will be a glove style controller where you don't have to pick up/put down controller while using yoke or throttle quadrant/switches etc. VFR flying is OK, particularly in Helos. The best solution is a hardware cockpit and the second best is a 3 wide monitor with 4th touchscreen and Air Manager. I have used all three approaches to simming and the most affordable and flexible is 3 wide/touch with Air Manager. This is what I use. I am not affiliated or trying to sell anything. Also, trying to follow your head movement on youtube videos has just too much distracting movement. Once again, no offense. Just a little cautionary advice for the newbies wanting to get into simming and/or youtubing.

I found that gave me more clearance so it wouldn't whack into my knee when doing my pre-flight control check. My oil pressure, temp and CHT gauges are now moved to a higher location so the ipad doesn't force me to look around it to see the gauges like it used to.
