I've got a new toy! - Bristle Blaster Test & Review
As it's that time of year I thought I'd do something a little different. This week I finally got my hands on a bristle blaster, and was keen to try it out.

With temperatures topping 40 degrees here in the UK in recent years, air conditioning seems to have bumped it's way up to the top of my 'things I'd really like to have' list. Adding A/C to a van made in 1992 certainly isn't a trivial task, but with a rudimentary understanding of the refrigeration cycle, a smattering of kit from the far east and bit of lateral thinking, fingers crossed I can pul...

You should have changed the timing belt.
Ciao possiedo un modello del 1983 con motore fuso voglio montare un motore piu performante turbo disel cosa mi consigli che monta senza modifiche ? Grazie in anticipo saluti dal italia
And howdly doodly doo :-)
I got up to grab another caviar niblik and a swig of bucks fizz to go with my Bad Boy pot noodle while listening to the start of your video... instantly recognised you for a Dwarfer :-) and would warn that I am the most obnoxious, trupped-up, farty little smeghead Kryten has ever had the misfortune to encounter, but since this is a redundant timeline, we'll have no memory of this. Brutal - just like the good old times!
Thanks, yeah I practically grew up with that show. Although I'm not too keen on pot noodles, more of a waffle man myself.
Is the window kit available to buy?
Hi, yes they have just become available now, you can order here: classictrafics.co.uk/collections/all-parts/products/new-electric-power-window-kit
Appreciate the time you took to make this video. Thank you. I was looking for a solution to remove layers of rubber stone chip, as poly discs and wire disc just get clogged up. Thiugh od now habe to invest in a better compressor if i went this route
Thank you for the video. I am getting ready to replace CV axel on a 1992 lesharo . Your video is a great resource.
Now i'll be honest I hate renaults i really do but I love old vehicles and am warming to the old trafics don't think I could bring myself to own one but near me there is a camper converted K reg 2.0 Diesel one thats sat outside somebodys house with an MOT failure preventing it from being used on the road even though it is actually sat on the road at the moment I would love somebody like you to buy it and do it up it needs welding but id hate to see it go for scrap if your interested please comment and ill let you know the details
You'd think they'd just make a bristle disc to go on an angle grinder
Yeah I did consider buying the head and making it fit a grinder but the speeds are wrong unfortunately. These work at maximum 4000rpm compared to 11000rpm of an angle grinder.
@@classictrafics try it anyway lol. You might get an even nicer surface finish in half the time
@@SoloBenchThe bristle brush would fly apart . I just bought this same tool, and it works well for undercoat . Wire wheel on a grinder just melts and smears undercoat around , but the bristle blaster is a colder process and works well
Maybe the radiator is too good and confused the thermostat/sensor and fueling
I think if you're moving at speed you wont get overheating anyway. Mine overheats when stationary if radiator not working
Propane similar to Easy Start I suppose
Yes we use it just like easy start, it's really controllable as well. Haven't needed it more than a handful of times over the years but when troubleshooting it's a really good tool to have.
If we lived in a sane society where quality = followers this channel would be in the top ten most viewed
Thanks, that means a lot.
You call foot pounds foot loobs (lbs)? Is that a trade way if saying it?
Just a joke really, I think I heard it from the Binky guys, can't remember.
How do you know when to use sealant with a gasket or not? For example, on a 2004 vivaro should you use sealant with the metal gasket on the EGR valve or the turbo?
Yeah it's a difficult one really, if the mating surface tolerance is important then usually not, unless there's no gasket at all and it just uses RTV sealant (I know, for example, the later model classic mini differentials were like that). Anything which is part of the coolant system can't hurt to be sealed in my opinion. I'm not sure about exhaust stuff though.
What coating did you use on the nuts?
The exhaust manifold ones? They were new replacements, copper coated I think.
I wonder how much it would cost to 3D print that manifold from Inconel
Not sure, don't know much about 3D printing to be honest. I could have made one from steel or stainless if needed but it was just about ok in the end.
Just took the sump off my vivaro. It's outside in a storm. Hopefully no bit's will blow up into the engine
What's that stuff you're spraying on the rusty bolts?
Ferrosol by Bilt Hamber, it's a penetrant a bit like GT85 or WD40.
Hmm, very interesting. I’ve been struggling for weeks trying to remove this tar like undercoating from inside my wheel wells
This may well be a good solution, but be careful as it will strip it right back to bare metal. They do finer belts which might be better for that application. I didn't notice any clogging or build up in the bristles which was good too.
Having recently struggled getting old paint off aluminium crank cases during a motorcycle rebuild i would be interested to see how this tool preformed.
Yes it would be interesting to see how it did. They do different brush heads for these, ranging from fine straight bristles to the more heavy duty ones with the angle at the end, and as I understand the fine ones remove paint without leaving that blasted effect so you'd probably want to try those. They do half thickness brushes as well as curved which apparently help getting round corners. I'm not sure if the genuine belts are compatible with this clone machine but if they are then I will definitely revisit this and try out a variety of different options.
Thanks for your videos , I am a new Mk1 owner and already found them useful .
Would soon put my 100L comp' on overheat mode, I think Chris mainly uses it for seam seal and paint if memory serves. Has no one done a wheel for standard electric grinders, 100/125mm? The interesting one for me was lack of heat, would be a good clean up tool after a chemical peel on a bigger panel imo.
Yeah, the lack of heat surprised me too, nothing like what the wire wheel puts in. I thought about making the head fit an angle grinder but unfortunately the speeds are wrong, these work at max 4000rpm compared to 11000rpm grinder. I did think about using a frequency converter to run the speed slower but it just didn't seem worth the effort. I think you're right, Chris seems to use the fine straight brush heads which are for paint removal, looking on the Wurth site they list several grades and the heavier duty ones with the angle bristles are the ones which give the blasting effect.
Yeah that makes total sense on the speed issue, I can think of areas all over the phase 2 it would be handy, but air supply would be an issue for me, handy tool though for certain spots, so will certainly put it on the list of toys wanted..@@classictrafics
What would you look for if you were to try to resolve the black smoke and oil usage?
My assumption was siezed piston rings as the 1721cc engine I fitted had sat for a few years. It had good compression but I think the oil control rings had stuck and were letting oil past. I tried no smoke oil but it didn't work. A full rebuild would have been my next option if I had stuck with that engine.
Would you do an engine swap for a customer, I have the same age Renault trafic ?
I have a trafic with a 2.2 engine but I want to put a 2.5 turbo because mine is motorhome and heavy the 2.2 is not strong enough
Can you please provide more information like brand, price and sourcing of this air conditioner?
Yes, of course, the brand is Gcfix, I'm not sure if they are the manufacturer or just a stockist but I sourced most of the bits from their Aliexpress site. They do various kits including electric and belt driven ones, although I pieced this system together from sperate listings as the courier costs worked out cheaper to send them seperately than if I'd bought the full kit in one go. I'll do a breakdown of the costs at the end but it wasn't as much as I'd thought it might be.
Topppppp!!!❤
Nice job, surrounded by gaz and gasoline in a tin can with wheels, I thought I was brave doing 90mph in mine but you are next level...
If there was a real reason to install a separate vacuum port just for a MAP sensor, surely they would have said why , but they didn't. Basically it should be close to a throttle body, where the factory port usually is. Also the shorter the lines the better. Smaller diameter, also better, i use 3.2mm silicone hoses. Basically vacuum should read ~0.3 engine idling, ~0.9 engine off meaning atmospheric pressure.
Yeah, I don't really understand why teeing in is a problem but the stag guide says to add a new takeoff so I guess there must be a reason. When I spoke with the inspector he said they always add a new point on their conversions but he didn't explain why. This was filmed a few months ago but I note your point on the silicone hoses, I would definitely use those in the future, I just hadn't thought to before. I suspect this will be my last LPG conversion though.
Change insurance companies. Adrian flux should be avoided at all costs, they really are just like crooks. I speak from experience eperience. They doubked the cost of a policy the day after i took it out and paid for it online and refused to refund me even though the policy hadn't started. It took a threat to get the ombudsman involved to get my money back.
Thanks for the advice, I will shop around a bit more next time. To be honest their service so far has been very good, and I don't really hold anything against them for requiring the certificate, it was just annoying as I was hoping to get away with it on this one.
@@classictrafics It does seem a bit strange, I think you could've just made a certificate up and printed it out. 😀 love what you do with our trafics, I have an 1987 eriba-car.
Parabéns pelos vídeos!!! assisti todos e foram muito útil pra mim!!!! Obrigado!!!!
i have a renault trafic 1996 Without environmental exhaust, which causes an increase in gasoline consumption, what is the solution plz
Is that a diesel 2.1 exhaust manifold ?
No it's a 2.2 petrol one, from the other scrap engine. They're pretty similar as both are J type engine blocks but the exhaust pipe points off at a different angle.
Hi, On the old engine, did you try to remove the rotor arm and if so can you share how you did it? Mine is jammed solid. I may be missing something.
8:30 i had a bad experience using rubber hoses for these tiny vacuum lines. What happens is overtime rubber gets stiff and brakes the plastic nipples from the MAP/temp sensor. The car still runs fine, so the driver wont notice, except now the engine is sucking all the dirty air through that vacuum line. In my opinion silicone hoses are much better fit, very flexible and no need for any metal clamps as its vacuum. And maybe i missed but there should be also an inline gas filter before the MAP. Anyway good work and quality content.
Good point, hadn't thought of silicone hoses but yes I might try that next time. And yes I did fit a filter a bit later on.
The only thing you can save is the fact your running on LPG. The outlay of the LPG conversion hardware is a massive cost and not cheap. Also a competent Gas engineer has to sign the installation off as safe. Mind you have chose one of the worst Vans a Renault Traffic. Not worth the time effort and money doing this conversion. Is the annoying music absolutely necessary.
A man is entitled to spend his money however he feels you absolute melt.
In Brazil, we have serious problems with liquid gas, due to excessive wear on the engine head due to the high temperatures generated during operation. Cracks, accelerated corrosion, inclusions of materials from the pistons. Engine life is cut in half. Greetings and good work!!!!
Very interesting, we don't seem to have those problems here, is that down to the higher temperatures in summer in Brazil? I know valve seat wear is one of the concerns over here but I've never had any trouble with it. In my experience as long as the valve seats are hardened to take unleaded then it's been alright. I do a fairly low mileage though so it's not too bad. My dad who also has a Trafic (same engine, 2165cc) converted his back in 2008 and he still drives it daily, it was at just over 100k and I think it's got about 165k on it now with no issues.
LPG tune up is unfortunately very problematic, thus causing problems sometimes. Its better to tune it to run a little on a rich side, with negative STFT comparing to a regular petrol. So in case the tank is filled with some lower quality less caloric gas, the engine will not run too lean.
Peace be upon you, my friend. I liked the way you work. I wish I could take care of the place and fix my Renault car. Your parts are similar to yours in the engine... I see that I have a problem with the gearbox. If you make a video on the gearbox, its disadvantages and procedures...? Thank you...
