Legend of Alex: Painting a Continent
Today we're learning about making tile-able textures and then using them to color the land of Hyrule for my Legend of Zelda inspired Minecraft adventure map! I go through and manually paint Death Mountain and Zora's Domain and cover the land in grass.
I found this tutorial by GeminiTay to be very helpful for learning how to paint a terrain, so here's a link!

Undertale - Behind Blue Eyes: A Sans Tribute
This series has been amazing! I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying learning about gothic architecture in Minecraft.
ah yes i love making squircles ⬛ 🔴
2 years later and this still helps, currently working on a build from warhammer 40,000
How do you fit the archivolts for the bell towers? For the main entrance the left over space from using a squash vault is used for the archivolt, but how does it work for the bell towers?
Some of it comes from adding thickness to your walls. A lot of cathedrals had very thick walls, so I don't see why you can't do the same in Minecraft. If you create a bit of a gap between the inner room and the exterior, you could fit the archivolt in that gap.
I am amazed. This is so unreal. I have new perspective on building.
I've been planning to recreate the Ely Cathedral in Minecraft for some time, mostly because of Leonard Bernstein's performance of Mahler's 2nd symphony there (definitely watch if you haven't seen it). I was looking at the octagon and thought that it was impossible to build in Minecraft, or at the very least I would have to simplify the octagon. But here you are building it! Amazing video series, I've watched every minute of it and it's been hugely inspiring for me.
Amazing peace of art! Love your explanations
Im trying to make a giant dome in my survival world (500 width x 500 depth × 250 height) this video helped immensely, thank you so much
Hey shells you shud try to build in beta 1.7.3 i think you might like it! the restrictions are kinda fun!
@@sh1r013 oh boy. I don't know if I could do that at this point haha! I've always been an advocate for more blocks, not less. I do have a friend that regularly plays in the older versions of Minecraft, so I'm sure she would be thrilled if I joined her for that, but I'm not convinced that I want to. 😅
@@shells124 See the thing is, the limited block pallet makes every build look good, so a professional such as yourself ought to make some stunning things! World edit is still available, however creative mode doesn't exist. I recently came back to your cathedral guide videos to plan some buildings for an adventure map im working on for legacy minecraft, and it made me wonder what kind of awesome builds you might do if you were in the beta version!
i saw this video about a year go, since then ive been making my own gothic cathedral using your structure. Ive made it my own and really developed my building skills, moat of it is trial and error but im getting there.
@@repipDATME good! That's always my goal is to give you the tools you need to make your own styled builds. Glad I could help!
This is very impressive. I love your work.
This is glorious. It's so beautiful. It's like a Wood Elf Cathedral with all the wood and nature. But it's also intimidating to look at because I'm learning to build Cathedrals and I don't think I'll ever be able to build something even as close to as nice as this ever. ;o; It's painfully awesome, truly. I can't believe you've done something this mind blowing. You're amazing.
@@littlerobotfairy9710 thank you! Wood elf cathedral is a great way to put it! I love fantasy and try to incorporate some sort of fantastical element into all of my builds! While this may be intimidating, I find that breaking builds down into basic shapes helps make it less intimidating. You also don't have to build something quite this ginormous. Give it a go and you may surprise yourself! I think getting the interior vaults down and the apse and ambulatory are the trickiest parts. Best of luck with your cathedral! Also, if you're new to my channel, I do have some tutorials that may help with your cathedral making endeavors. Hopefully they will help things be less intimidating.
This is my new favourite building in all of minecraft. I could stare at that colorful detailed interior for hours. When you said you wanted to build the best thing you ever did.. you really accomplished that
insightful video and an incredible watch thank you!!
Do you know GneissName?
@@PrivateLZG Nope. Should I?
@@shells124 Not a necessity of course, but look him up on UA-cam, there's some incredible color theory and Minecraft content there!
not necessarily, they just also happened to make a video about Minecraft block colours recently, it's nice that both of you have made videos about colours in the game 👍
@@shells124 Apparently, my reply didn't send so here: No necessity, but he makes really cool color theory visualisations with Minecraft
i am astounded with how awesome your buikds are! i was inspired by Bloodborne to create a gothic city and found your videos while looking for inspiration and build direction, only to be floored by your cathedrals and architecture
The circle and the ambulatory was hardaf even tho I watched ur part 3
@@JerickoKeithCastillo-hs3ci yeah, the ambulatory is definitely the most difficult thing to build. Thanks for sticking with it!
great video! you are truly a 3d mosaic artist
Damn it really took you a whole year to finish this series
@@samscrib8719 oof. Yeah. Sorry, I'm slow.
Thanksss for this learning experience! VERY in depth! ❤
this was helpful! a bit big for what I needed but helps!
making this in survival! makes more of a connection that way.😁
По какой причине ваш голос звучит, как будто вы пьяны?
Oof, does my voice really sound that slurred? I don't drink, so rest assured I'm not drunk in any of my videos.
bravo, flawless staircase technique worked wonders in my castle im gonna make so many of them now, I even made one for my giant tree house going around the trunk, absolute must
this is imperssive, really dope
Besides the fact this needs a tutorial cause its stunning. What is the music used i lowkey liked that a lot
Thank you! While I don't have a tutorial for the forest cathedral itself, I do have tutorials talking about the elements of a cathedral and how to build them if you haven't checked them out already. The song I used for this video is Church Bell Celebration by Doug Maxwell.
@@shells124 i build a lot myself but i have to admit stuff like this has always messed a lot with me because of all the swirls and such. I use more straight and cleaner lines. ( Eventho i would love to be able to build like what you showcased here more) But ive always struggled alot with things like domes etc and circular/ curved thingd
@@diagonstudios15 that's fair. I personally struggle with organic, freeform builds and tend to stick with symmetrical designs and geometric shapes. Even my swirls are based off the Golden Ratio Fibonacci spiral. So I always worry that my builds tend to come out a bit stoic. I think the best way is to practice with things outside your comfort zone until you start to become more comfortable with it. Easier said than done, I know. But that was part of why I made this particular build more swirly in the hopes of expanding my abilities.
@@shells124 i relatr heavily. Id say i show you some of my builds but unfortunately i cant add images :( , but very similar problem always sticking to symmetry and i feel like its like a borderline autistic thing with me and symmetry and starting to actually lose my mind over possible asymmetry. But its like you said, it makes builds way more stoic and boring( idk if boring is the correct word) Thats why the free form is definitely nicer. Important note tho i build everything block by block i do not use any form of world edit or such ( im not sure if you do ? Only just discovered your videos today. But big ups to you if you did this build block by block cause its insanely massive)
@diagonstudios15 I think I would go insane if I built every block by hand haha. I started using World Edit to help me build a while back and I honestly don't think I could go back to building without it now haha.
was ur voice ok? (no insult)
btw ur tutorial was very easy to understand and i liekd it very much. i wanted to learn how to learn gothic architecture for minecraft and thankfully i saw this very rare playlist
U should make ghotic details and ideas video, for chatedrals. It would be soo helpfule
For my gallery I didn’t know how to connect the front part of the gallery to the back part so I put a secret passageway IN THE WINDOW. Because of the many layers of glass it isn’t really noticeable so unless you’re really paying attention you won’t see it
@@dragonofdestiny8321 I mean, you might as well with all that space haha!
hey Shells, will we be getting another themed cathedral soon?
@@J.A_Music not a cathedral, but I am working on a reconstruction of the Parthenon for my next video!
Anyone who do not know Jesus do not wait!jesus died for you on a cross so you all could life with him for ever! His kingdom come soon! There no sickness no death no sins no evil of any kind! Get ready now if you want to be there!
I had to laugh every time you splatted "baby grunt" in the corner. Hope the little burrito is treating you well. Your map looks awesome! What a lot of dedication manually painting all that stuff!
@@Daricio1 I figure people do it with their cats all the time, I could get away with doing it with my child haha.
The manual repaints of Death Mountain and Zora's Domain look really good!
@@angelo8606 thanks! They definitely took the longest to do! I think the replay mod kept crashing for Zora's domain because I had over six hours worth of time packed into it haha.
I don't plan on using any of these techniques, but it was fascinating to watch.
Congratulations on the new baby! your map is looking very nice
idk how you can market these teaching skills but there is no way someone wouldnt pay for this type of shit, maybe not paying for minecraft but you are a great teacher it seems
How did you get the sword to look like that? With mods right? Btw love your ocarina solo, I actually did a double take because i thought it was audio from one of the games.🎵
@@Milk_Toast05 the sword is a summoned in armor stand. You don't need mods for that, just a command block.
@@shells124 oh, alright. Thanks for responding so fast 😮
Are you gonna continue the lunar cathedral ?
@@dragonofdestiny8321 sigh... I'm honestly not sure. I had hoped to keep doing live streams and finish the cathedral, but unfortunately my personal life has intervened in trying to set aside time to live stream. Mostly because I have noisy children that need taken care of. Especially now that I have a newborn baby. So yeah. I really wish that I could, but I can't make any promises for the foreseeable future. I'm sorry. :(
@@shells124don’t worry about it, it’s fine
beautiful..
Awesome video, I really enjoyed learning about tracery's and how to build fog windows. Your video is very inspiring!
maximum brush radius is 6 so how did you make a 30 blocks radius brush
There's a file in world edit that sets the limit for things like brush size and number of undos you can make. If you are using fabric to load world edit, access your Minecraft folder and click on the config folder and then the world edit folder. There you have a document called worldedit.properties that you can open with notepad. Look for max-brush-radius. Change it to -1 and then you can have any size of brush you want. Just know that the bigger your brush is, the more lag you'll experience.
Awesome
i thought you will build entire cathedral, but you just started, you didn't show how to finish. I'm so sad
Sorry. There's a reason this is just part one of the Gothic architecture series. I thought there was too much to include in just one video and I really wanted to go into more detail on some of the fancier things like the apse.
I have built some large churches/cathedrals myself and i thought i might make a video of one of them i will comment a link as soon as i can record it so you can rate it.
Do you have a video showing how you finish it completely? I'm really curious about how to do it. Greetings from Mexico Puebla, the place where they make mole, cider and preserved fruit.
Exactly in Huejotzingo Puebla, there is a monastery here, a former convent when the Spanish came they left it here haha lol
@@martinurieldiazcosme9067 Hola! I don't have a video of me finishing this exact cathedral, but the rest of my Gothic architecture series should give you all the information you need to finish it. Hope that helps!
@@shells124 Thank you

Your knowledge of Gothic Architecture is just amazing, and your translation into mine craft is top notch. Thanks for all you have put up Just a wealth of educated content and techniques. I really appreciate you taking the time to share all of this!!
@@Staestc thank you for your kind words! I hope to be able to continue to make content and that people like you continue to watch and enjoy it. 😊
This video was very informative (coming from an actual engineer.) I agree that a lot of architectural ideas do not translate well to the blocky world of Minecraft (at least at scale.) Thank very much for this tutorial and if you would like more information about building and designing roofs in Minecraft. Feel free to ask!
2:58 there is an error. It says the maximum brush radius is 6. I want a 20. What should I do?😢
