Unboxing Menard’s Tulsa Tank Train Set - Santa Fe F3 Black Bonnet Scheme
Hi folks, welcome to MTS. Today we’re going to unbox Menard’s latest O Gauge train set, the Tulsa Tank Train! Very impressed with this set. Didn’t set up the 3 rail tubular track oval with the power supply, but loved running it on my layout. Hope you enjoy the video…thanks for watching and I’ll see you down the line!

Hi folks…welcome to MTS. Today we have a couple Lionel postwar diesel switchers. Owner states that neither engines are working. Since these are from the postwar era, shouldn’t take much to get them going. We’ll start with the Union Pacific 635 with the 2 position e unit, then work on the MKT 600 with the 3 position e unit. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you down the ...

MTH NYC GP-9 Diesel Locomotive with TMCC
Переглядів 565Місяць тому
Hi folks…welcome to MTS! Ya never know what you’re gonna get! Today we have a MTH NYC GP-9 diesel locomotive that I recently picked up on eBay. Description stated the it operated in forward, neutral, and reverse but didn’t have sounds. Thinking this was an original Protosound unit I thought it may need a full Protosound reset or top board replacement. That’s where it gets interesting. Hope yo...

MTH Tether Replacement GS-2 Daylight Steam Locomotive
Переглядів 9332 місяці тому
Hi folks, welcome to MTS. Today, we have a MTH Railking GS-2 southern Pacific steam locomotive that I picked up as a project. Previous owner stated it was untested, but it does have Protosounds. That makes me a little leery as PS2 is more difficult to work on if there is something wrong. This was one of my most labor intensive repairs as there were inconsistent issues. Sometimes it would work,...

Hi folks welcome to MTS. Today, we have a pre-war Lionel 238 Pennsylvania railroad torpedo style locomotive. We will do a revival on the locomotive and the whistling tender, 2225W. This locomotive was manufactured between 1936 and 1940. In this video we will disassemble the locomotive, replace the roller in the E-unit, solder a replacement headlight, install the new red transparent marker light...
MTH Wheel Rot Hiawatha Project Fail
Переглядів 6962 місяці тому
Hi folks…welcome to MTS. Today I have a 30-1127-1 MTH Railking Hiawatha Locomotive with original Protosounds. Bought as a project as the previous owner said the wheels wouldn’t move. I figured it was probably just the worm gear…those wheels don’t move. Quick score…wrong! Oh well, you win some…you lose some. I wouldn’t think wheel rot would be an issue on a 26 year old locomotive. Anyway…some go...

Cycled 16 miles (Total of 32 miles) of the Dawkins Line Rail Trail in Eastern Kentucky. These are a few of the original signage and highlights from the old railroad. The Dawkins Line was built in 1912 and exchanged ownership through the years. RJ Corman acquired from CSX in 2002, then finally purchased by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 2011. The trail is fully paved and was an awesome experien...

Legendary Lionel quality. Nothing can kill a Lionel train. Nothing!
You don’t see this paint combo much because the Santa Fe silver and red looks so much nicer. There is nothing different from the previous rail line names Menards offered outside of the paint. The chrome is a good selling feature it adds bling to an otherwise plain look. After all toys gotta look good to sell and be something special from what other manufacturer’s engines look like. I’ve come to like the looks of the flashy chrome.😊 The thing I really don’t like is the distance between the two engines. The couplers are way too long.😊 I could also do without vocal, electronic controls, and hand held operation.😊 Your layout looks well presented.😊
Great comments! Definitely agree with you on the length of the couplers. Thanks!
Curious where you obtained the Chevy Nomad seen at 15:30. Nice review of the set.
Think I had picked that up in a diecast lot at a local show a few years ago. I looked at the bottom and it is the Vitesse brand.
Nice set but chicogo matches my layout better again have fun 😊
If i was to buy new set would go with Chicago & nothwestern comes with f unit and 2 cars for 250 before rebate same amount of track u can also get matching caboose one thing of note make sure ur bearing caps are tight on caboose they can work loose and good luck finding one if it comes off dont ask me how i know that 😅 have fun 😉👍
The caboose is a bit wobbly, I will buy a set; don't know about purchasing the caboose yet! Thank you for this review!
I think there is a switch under the dummy unit that turns on the light?
I like that Menards seems to have adjusted the 14:11 jump starts. The horn should be moderated a bit. I have four of these engines. Three Santa Fe intro units and a CNW. My impression: not bad.
I'm pretty sure my mother-in-law bought this train off of you from ebay
Awesome…It’s a good locomotive, great runner! Enjoy!
Great Video, not so Great Audio.
I noticed you have the Moes cycle shop. Have you uploaded a review of it?
I haven’t put a review of that out, but the cycle shop was a great addition. The size of the building was ideal for that part of my layout and the lighting was perfect.
Looks good. Good value.
Trucks look like MPC era Lionel syemintin trucks ❤😮🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Yep, you’re absolutely right. Knew I had seen something similar before.
It’s a nice set but what kills it for me is the plastic gears.
It is made in china, therefor shouldn’t expect much. Longevity over geneations, and quality being major issues. Plus I don’t see these trains as cost effective seeing the build quality.
Plastic gears are OK. Lionel started using them in certain applications in the 50’s. I have a 2353, with a plastic gear in the drive train. A brass gear off of the motor shaft to a plastic gear. It runs just fine. Just don’t run a heavy train with the Menard’s F’s and you’ll be fine.
A quality plastic gear of Delrin w/PTFE or an IPN branched Nylon is a good gear material. But I seriously doubt the Chinese use such a quality material in their gears. Straight Nylon is too soft as is unmodified acetal. Hence I would prefer to see brass gears and steel worms. PS I only run heavy postwar trains.😊
@@genemanno1533 I’m not sure what composition the Lionel gears are. My 2353’s are seventy years old and are running just fine. Maybe this was a replacement gear on the one that I took apart. I haven’t looked at my other ones.
I really enjoy the Menards trains, I have a beta 2 or 3 of the first sante fe and have enjoyed it enough that I bought the UP when it came out. The couplers on some of the cars are stiff to close as you noticed, some don’t stay coupled well, but all in all they are a great deal. I especially love this Black bonnet paint scheme, Great video!
Good Set for the money. I have quite a few Menards rolling stock.👍👍
Looks good but horn is annoying
Looks very nice 👍🏻 for the money you can’t beat it. Beautiful paint 🎨 job as well
This is an awesome set i have the passenger cars and just purchased the AA engine set with plans for a b unit. I would love to see you feature this set on another vid maybe in more detail.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the MTH RailKing Hiawatha. Like you, I bought one secondhand on an auction site and mine also has the zinc rot issue. I found your video very helpful to see how to start the disassembly process. I am in search of a suitable drive block to use as a replacement for the existing one. Please post another video if you ever replace the drive block. I think there will be a lot of interest since it seems that there are several locos popping up on the auction sites that are afflicted with the same problem. Regards, Brad
Jumpin Chemical Trails, she be plenty good. Aaa ?
Very nice! That is a great line of locomotives from Lionel’s heyday. They are great runners and easy to maintain. I’ve never like changing brushes from the top. I always worry about breaking the tabs, when I do. An excellent video, as always.
You were showing everything, but the bridge!
Well, if I had one o those new fangled electronic locomotives, I'd say this video would help! 🤔 I wish I could find one at that price.😮
Very nice! That is one good looking locomotive. A number of railroads had air tanks mounted on the top of the engine. The Alaska Railroad is a prime example. I like the way that it revs-up and starts slowly moving. Fairly prototypical, especially with a load. EMD's have nice response, compared with GE's. Either way, you got a fine deal. An excellent video, as always.
But why are air tanks below on the fuel tank also? You don't need them in both places. Roof top air tanks mean a bigger fuel capacity! 😮 lionel should've noted that! Get it right or go home, Lionel! 😐
@james: It’s an MTH model, not Lionel. The fuel tank/air tanks are premolded. Due to costs, MTH probably used that molding on all appropriate GP’s . Since the air tanks, on top, suggest passenger service, the belly fuel tank may have been larger (longer) for additional fuel for the steam generator. MTH didn’t produce many GP’s with roof mounted air tanks, so cost for new , prototypically correct, belly fuel tank wasn’t worth the additional cost of new tooling/molds.
Excellent video! Train America Studios was a company that Mike Reagan once owned back in the early 2000’s. He actually worked on my son’s locomotive back then, and did a great job. Train America Studios was bought out, and Mike Reagan was hired by Lionel, working with them for many years, and helping Lionel to create the Lionel Legacy System and the Cab2.
Train America Studios was a hobby shop owned and operated by Ron Reagan. He did some of his own boards
Nice test board. Makes so much sense. Saves time and money. Cool.
Honestly worth the watch to hear that engine crank up. Great work and keep up the fun videos, really enjoyed this one!
Lionel locomotive's diesel n steam locomotive's are worth investing DCC n Sound technology cause they're worth the investment n money n makes locomotive's more entertaining n friends n family to see n enjoy
A new front truck with a motor n DCC n Sound technology
That Lionel f3 a unit should be converted to the new technology DCC n Sound technology n a new truck for the front of the locomotive Amtrak it's worth the investment
Interesting................Horrible Music!
Yeah…this was one of my earlier video’s. I’ve since quit adding any kind of music as it takes away from the content.
Good Job. 👍🏼
I have i believe is the second run missed out on the first run so i jumped on this as soon as it was available on menards on line train store all my rolling stock us menards mth and lionel which works great together very great deal and fantastic value well worth the money
I bought this awhile ago when i was in wisconson visiting family went to menards and brought the Santafe rtr train set i worked fo santa for 14 yeard in the machine sgop in barstow ca and losangeles ca locations unril the 1996 merger qith burlington northern to form the bnsf railroad
That’s awesome…thanks for sharing!
So, that's how that tool is used! I bought one, and couldn't figure it out! I bought a 249e w/the eunit lever bent back onto the eunit. I think that should be replaced. 😮 😊😊
Nice!!
Great work repairing your MTH GS-2 locomotive. I have a question about replacing old wires in O gauge trains including locomotives and tenders. Would you recommend 30 gauge stranded tinned copper with silicone rubber insulated wire for replacing wires to O gauge locomotives and tenders? Or should I maybe go with a single core wire? I'm confused so many choices on Amazon. I have never tried soldering and replacing wires
Thank you! I would go with 20 gauge copper stranded wire. I’ve bought the silicone rubber insulated wire on Amazon and while it would be good for using on a layout, I would recommend the 20 gauge wire from an automotive supply store like O Reilly or AutoZone. The silicone rubber insulation on the wire from Amazon seems too flimsy. At least in the wire kit.
Awesome job!!
Very nice! Is the reason that they don't include the plugs is that they could be different, even with the same color-coded wiring? I have only one MTH locomotive, which is up-gradable to ProtoSound 2, I believe. An excellent video, as always.
Thank you! I think the reason is MTH had various revisions of the proto 2 over several years. By offering a ‘universal’ tether, they don’t have to stock all the different revisions.
Great vid, very informative! I do have a question. I have a proto2 diesel that does the same exact thing. No tether, so maybe in the battery circuit?
Thank you! Maybe in the battery. Check your contact rollers and wheels. You can also try checking the battery connection pad and the plug to the board.
@@modeltrainsolutions7368 Right on. I'll give that a try.
I love the engine and whole coal train set!
Did you reach Mth parts by phone or computer? If by phone, could you please text the number for Parts department could be reached. Nice job replacing tether and diagnosing the problem
Thank you…I was able to get to MTH parts online at www.mthpartsandsales.com. Watch my video on the Hiawatha fail and go to the “where to buy” portion of the video. I believe it’s around 8:40 on the time bar. There I detail how to access the exploded view to order parts.
Thank you for your time and your videos. All I see is your hands. They are very skilled.
Very nice! Those older units are so easy to work on, compared to the new stuff, today. That light assembly is strange. I wonder if there was a piece that attached to the base of the bulb, as it would be a pain to solder the wire to the bulb each time that it burned out. Either way, a good tutorial on fixing the problems on older steam locomotives. An excellent video, as always.
Thanks you! You know, I bet you’re right on the light bulb. I’m thinking it had one of those brass bulb screw in sockets with the circular pad/wire contact on the bottom. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks again!
@@modeltrainsolutions7368 You could probably find a screw-in or even a bayonet style one in your parts drawer. I looked at my 221 and 2025 and they have the screw-in style that clips into that front piece. I'm sure that they are quite common.
The black 238 is a fairly scarce version. They made a lot more gunmetal. Not sure you know but I’m pretty sure that is a Macys set, 1936. The 238 with the red 600 series car. It’s a beautiful set when cleaned up,
Thanks for sharing Practical!!!
Is that Milwalkee steam engine a Protosound 1 engine??
Yes, it is a Proto 1 engine. Good news is I was able to run Milwaukee tender with another random Proto 1 locomotive.
Interesting. I've been fortunate enough not to have any zinc pest on my locomotives. I only have one MTH locomotive, a Rail King Ps-4 Pacific and it runs quite well. I have two Williams cars that have the zinc pest on just truck each car. They are a fairly common item on eBay, for only a few bucks. Good luck finding the wheels. It's too bad that MTH doesn't offer the wheels separately, which seems a bit unusual. An excellent video, as always.
