7 Horror Moments in Final Fantasy | EXP Required
The Halloween season is upon us, which means, like every UA-cam Gaming channel we thought it important to celebrate something Horror related for the season. Final Fantasy is not usually known for its horror, as it is predominantly a Fantasy series; but its dabbled in moments of horror throughout its run, and we think these moments really bring the fear.
Beware of Spoilers for Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XV.

8:42 if we’re Talking FF6 and genuine Horror. Well there is one Place in the World of Ruin that gives that sort of Creepy feeling! And that’s “Owzer's House” or OWZER’S MANOR! On your Mission to Rescue/Recover your Missing friends and Allies! Little Relm the Magic Painter has been taken in by The Prestigious OWZER! An Artistic Master who’s fallen into a rut, and is in need of new motivation and talent. However, after taking in Relm, they both go missing in the Manor, with House Maids and Butlers fleeing as the House has become haunted by terrors unknown. And upon entering, you immediately feel creeped out in the dark as a Voice tells you to leave…until you turn on the lights! But things get bad as progress as it turns out the Paintings In OWZER’S MANOR have come to Life and are now Hostile Entities! All controlled by the evils of a Demon that has possessed Relm and is making her paint its image into Reality!
I’m gonna be honest. This list is lacking alittle on the Horror. So on 4:47, for FF15, Altissia’s portion was more emotional. I can accept that Opinion. But here’s the truth! The Real Horror Show was Chapter 13, Verse 1 - Noctis! In this Chapter, The Unprepared Newbies that played Noctis’ story up to this point, not only lost Prompto, but soon after arriving in The Magiteck Empire of the Niflheim. Snowed In and completely devoid of life, they are ambushed by Niflheim’s Auto defense Systems, kissing the final piece of Noctis’ life (it was the car). All before Noctis is suddenly cut off from his friends! Leaving him alone, as Niflheim’s Magic Canceling Barrier leaves him defenseless…except for the RING his father and Luna gave him! It’s in this chapter that he has to traverse the Empire’s Hallways alone! All as He’s exposed to the Internal horrors that have corrupted the Kingdom’s Infantry, and has to hide from the Now Wild and Out of Control Robot Soldiers that stalk the Halls! It was definitely a moment in gaming that caused a lot of Frustration and Game overs since you had to stealth your way passed So many Enemies! Honestly it caused such a Big Problem that when the Game got updated, it was given an optional pathway, called Verse 2 - Gladio & Ignis! Changing up the pace. To me, doing that did feel like Square was over correcting the issue, but at least it’s an option. Even in Royal Edition! Still, if Ever a new player encounters Chapter 13! They should allow themselves to play through Verse 1! It’s to die for 😂😛
There's definitely more than a single moment in each game! And this list is just an opinion, no single one is better than another. Personally I enjoy horror that takes a while to sink in or hits you after the fact - there's plenty of moments of no return in XV, but realising that Altissia isn't somewhere you can ever go back to again was a sock in the gut for me! Episode Ignis elevated it further, seeing just how frantic everything was before it got demolished. I'd argue that Ep Prompto is more horror-filled than the beginning of Chapter 13 if we're being nitpicky - same overall feeling, same being cut off from your friends, but without the magical ring and the need for a little bit of stealth as you pick up extra weapons and actually learn what the Empire's been doing this entire time. Now if only going from finger-guns to being crucified in Gralea wasn't such a tonal shift and made sense..... :P -Mol
You left out one part. If the player has been paying attention to the in game lore (and especially if they've seen the the additional DLC content, movie and/or anime episodes) then they know the horror of the ring. A ring that slowly drains the life of the King/Queen who wears it. A Ring that Noctis is secretly terrified of having grown up watching it drain his father from the strong confident fighter of his early memories to a frail old man not long for the world in the span of a little over a decade. That right Noctis is force to put on and actually use with no preamble no time to prepare because he is alone truly alone for the first time in his life and that ring he fears and hates is his only means of attack or defense
FFXIV has so many horror moments it could fill a list by its own 😆 tesleens transformation most of all
ShB is definitely a beauty of horror! Plenty of great moments scattered around Eorzea -Mol
9:00 - You can save Cid. You need to quickly catch fresh fast-swimming fish - do that and hurry back and he recovers from his illness. He will then send Celes off on his raft.
Sure can! Most people won't know to grab fast-moving fish (and it's kind of a PITA!), though, so the majority of players are going to see the "Cid dies" scene as the default - not to mention the attempted suicide and finding purpose anew is much more impactful than being put on a boat :P -Mol
My list from games I’ve completed off of the top of my head 7 - Gelnika / leaving Gelnika and Emerald being outside 8 - Deep Sea Research Center 9 - dungeon where you fight Ark 10 - when Magus sisters chase you! 12 - Nechrol of Nabudis 7 remake - Hojo’s lab
Yeh Oeilvert where you fight Ark in FF9 is an earie place with all those faces and barely functioning holograms for sure. And the Deep Sea Research facility gave me nightmares as a kid - Jack
FFXIV has several. I'll list one that isn't relevant to the plot, so no MSQ spoilers here: The Lv50 quest, 'Corpse Groom'. This sidequest picks up some time after you meet Edda Pureheart early on in the ARR MSQ. One of her former party members, Raiyo Paiyo, gets a letter from her inviting him and his other former teammate, Liavinne, to her upcoming wedding to her fiancee, Avere Truearm in the Tam-tara Deepcroft. There's a couple of problems here: 1. Avere was beheaded in that dungeon before we players went there in the MSQ. 2. Liavinne was killed when the Garlean Empire attacked the Waking Sands right after we defeated Titan. So, this is where we come in. We go back to the Tam-tara Deepcroft which is now overrun with demons and other abominations. We make our way down and fight Avere's head. After the battle is over, we see Edda back away from us in fear, only for her robe to catch fire as she falls to her death. My second example is MSQ-centric, so I will keep spoilers to a bare minimum: "Welcome to Shadowbringers." If you know what this quote means, you know.
XIV has so many examples of practically every genre, I feel like it'd almost be cheating haha! Edda's story is a brilliant one though, especially once you realise that that could easily have been you - they're just another adventuring party with no big deeds to their name, after all! Knowing that Edda's repurposed in PotD is a tragedy all itself, too. Also, rip to that merchant, we hardly knew ye. -Mol
Great video!
Thanks so much! -Mol
To be fair on this list.. Final Fantasy VII original probably has the most horror moments compared to the rest of the series in a particular sense.. Trying to pick one of the most horrific moments of the game is pretty hard.. Out of all the FF games. 7 is pretty much borderline Resident Evil in an FF game along with other types of horror in genre.. If I had to pick a moment of horror in an overall perspective. The Sunken Gelnika [optional dungeon] + The Emerald Weapon and Partially Sephiroth for several reasons. 1. The Submarining Mechanic of the whole game. While it's cool that FF has a Submarine mechanic to make the world bigger and more explorable.. In a world with biological, cosmic, environmental and psychological horrors are par for the course. In a world of unethical practices from Shinra is to be expected.. A giant green mech that is designed to defend the planet that can wipe you out in less than a minute is something unnerving knowing it's swimming around somewhere.. especially where it happens to be waiting in front of an optional endgame dungeon.. 2. A wreckage of a giant VTOL that is supposedly containing Weapons Materia DESIGNED to DESTROY Sephiroth.. Hades being one summon that may as well be a bad breath attack that also may as well be hoping to stop Sephiroth in his tracks, Materia that allows you to attack twice in a go, A final limit break of unhinged aerial bombardment. [Highwind for Cid] and a lot of endgame items that could make up a huge amount of difference. Eldritch Abominations that probably escaped Containment that confused Cloud at first for being a research facility.. Goes without saying that there is no such thing as excessive force to take down Sephiroth: considering it is: the guy who impales Giant Snakes, Got mind control and shapeshifting powers of his clones or anyone that has JENOVA cells that are on the loose, the guy who is not only such a psychotic menace.. Who turns JENOVA's corpse parts to bosses to distract the heroes while he's busy destroying the world and attaining godhood.. But even fighting him directly is tantamount to suicide.. 3. The Turks you encounter don't give it their actual all against you can be led for 3 factors. A. There are eldritch abominations that are running on the loose that seems straight up cosmic horror for some reason to start with so getting exhausted or downright weakened with them on the loose is NOT a good idea.. B. The place is completely underwater so any excessive force from them and the party could flood the whole area and let them loose to the world that could make things so much worse! and C. They know FULL well that they can't take down Sephiroth on their own or with any ordinary weapons either; they learned their lesson on how far dangerous Sephiroth is to deal with back at the Temple of the Ancients with the Black Materia incident. 4. The Overall Threat that Sephiroth is to even Warrant an Aircraft Carrier to possess all kinds of Materia and Weapons to use on him. Comparing Kefka who has obtained Godhood and practically won in his ambitions remaking the world in his perverse image while Sephiroth came by a hairs breath close to winning in wholly damaging the planet... The reason why Sephiroth has earned his recognition as a horrifying Villain wasn't just because of his Strength and Power to destroy an entire solar system as Safer Sephiroth.. or because of what he done in Nibelheim or the level of planning he did on the Temple of Ancients for the Black Materia he was after.. He earned his status for being so huge of a threat that even the company he once worked for had a lot of measures in place specifically tailored to destroy him.. The Mako Cannon at his Northern Crater that could absorb and destroy the entire planet by draining it to shoot at him in full power if that is what it took for them to kill him planet be damned.. Not even the Empire Kefka worked with had that much measures specifically in dealing with the mad clown if he goes out of line or goes insanely destructive with power.. While Kefka is dangerous when not taken seriously because of his dark humour and pretender vibes that his presence commands; Sephiroth is practically straight up dangerous that encountering him is akin to calamitous misfortune.. Tseng was lucky NOT to die to him.. 5. If Sephiroth knew about what he COULD use with that knowledge in REMAKE. ESPECIALLY if he had X2 Cut Materia. While one can argue how much Canon Crossovers has influence on Sephiroth when it comes to being otherworldly powerful... REMAKE canon shows that Sephiroth has learned from his failures especially during Advent Children via unique > time travel > alternate universe part of the Lifestream. Rufus Shinra did somewhat outsmart him in Advent Children in a sense through Kadaj and his other two incarnates. In one of the different possibilities: He could catch wind onto the fact that a sunken air carrier and collect some dangerous Materia to aid further success in his plans. Reno and Rude would be mice trapped for the slaughter if he got there.. Also the idea of Sephiroth doing twice as much within one stroke of his sword is like Tsubame Gaeshi from Fate cept potentially even worse especially if he is so powerful that he got twice the Octaslash; Cloud could not stand much of a chance unless he gets it first in a horrifying scenario.. For a small endgame dungeon. You wouldn't think of much of it at first until you gave it a lot of thought.
You could easily find ten such moments in Final Fantasy XIV. Heck you could probably find ten just in Shadowbringers+Endwalker, and a good few more in the other expansions
Gelnika's a pretty good pick! The fact that it's entirely optional and you have to go searching for it is a huge plus in its creepiness as well. It's the understated horrifying moments that really work for me no matter what game they're in (and there's plenty of them all over the place!) Great list, thanks for sharing! -Mol
@Kurorok611 Thanks for the response :). And yeh FF7 definately got the Horror/Sci-fi world's collide vibe down. It's definately a dark world, which is interesting considering its mainstream appeal - Jack
Best FF content in a minute
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed - Jack
Cool new logo :)
@samgrant4827 Good isn't it? ;) - Jack
Still my favorite final fantasy
A very good choice - Jack
😭😂
Game would have been great without Rinoa. With Rinoa, it's a solid 6/10.
Ah, but without Rinoa, the game wouldn't have happened! -Mol
"An assist from Yuffie" SLAP! 😆😆
Haha! Yep. Yuffies best contribution to the entire series 😅😅 - Jack
I played this before 7 so I just couldn't go back to FF7 I synthesized a Gilgamesh card to get 100 holy wars.... I'd leave Quistis at a low life so she could do her limit break "Degenerator" and put haste on her so she attacked first. The degenerator attack is a 1 turn kill that will kill pretty much anything even a Malboro. I'd go to those islands where there's hard battles every two steps and just level up. So I was level 99 on disc 2
There's something special about everyone's first FF! How'd all that grinding serve you for the rest of the game? :P -Mol
@EXP-Podcast i was invincible but I tried to do the same thing with ff 9 and eventually my disc 1 wouldn't work..
I'm a sucker for a good final boss, and I don't believe Squaresoft/Enix have ever topped the final boss in FFVIII.
I think I agree. Perfect blend of story and strategy :D - Jack
“And has the second highest strength stat in the game” Shows him suplexing a train.
Haha! And what better way to show it 😅 - Jack
Great rundown/edit of material. FF7 was my entry into the genre and, blown away at a crucial time, anticipating the next installment ended up being an emotional disappointment but I still found a way to attach, and, later would come to be very fond of this aesthetic, puzzling experience. It was like the teengage version show of ff7 and really great, if not number 2 of all ff7s up til 9.
Awesome. I'm glad you found a way to love the game when it didn't immediately grab you :) - Jack
I love final fantasy viii, and i was actually thinking that i should replay it soon
Go for it. I'm always tempted to replay :D - Jack
Whatever you say, cannot change the fact this game has an ass magic system. The worst in the RPG history.
To each their own! I quite like the concept of junctioning magic to stats, even if in practise it can be a pain -Mol
@@EXP-Podcast You like it?, fine, your choice is fine you state your choice, but the fact is that it is a terrible magic system.
A shitty ass card game is something you consider good?, what the actual FFFF?
The Oath is one of the best FF tracks ever made, and it fits perfectly to Squall's speech 😭❤
Hard agree there. Especially with the slightly pause before it starts :D - Jack
@@EXP-Podcast True! Also I highly commend the quality of your videos! This and the FF9 video alone earned a sub from me! 😊
@Kenjidarou Thank you so much, and glad you enjoyed. We'll be coming out with some more stuff soon :) - Jack
I'm still not sure if I like it or not, but I definitely am very tired of hearing about FF7. Either way, I don't understand why everyone is so nosy about Squall, prying him open and demanding he change his disposition to suit them. Or why people shove him into the role of leader, or where the romance comes from beyond "a dude and chick on screen at the same time", in which case, why not Squall and Selphie? Or Irvine and Quistis? Rushed writing in production unfortunately, I assume.
That's an interesting take. For me i always thought it was intentionally awkward to really hone in on how Teenagers of that age group interact. Type-0 has some similar writing. - Jack
I love Final Fantasy 8! I'm replaying it right now. I play it once every year. I replay every year 8, 10 and 12. 😊
Awesome. I try and replay all the games when I can too. Especially 8 and 9 - Jack
I've played FF9 3 times and watched quite a few videos explaining what's so great about it. I just don't see much of it. Those who love FF9, good on ya, it just falls flat for me, even in all the areas it gets praised for. FF6, Tactics, and 12 are my favorites. I put 9 down with 2 and 13. I just don't get it.
IMO there's something to love about each of the games! 9 definitely doesn't even enter my top 5 favourite games but I think there's lots to be celebrated about it (and, for that matter, 2 and 13 as well!). However, excellent taste with the Ivalice enjoying! -Mol
Absolutely amazing work with this video. I surprised that you aren't a pro yet. Editing was nicely done. Voice narration was beautiful. Your quirky 2 cents are well worth it. I am a fan. Wonderful work! Subbed!
Wow, thank you so much! That really means a lot! This was my first voiced anything and I was definitely nervous as anything, so your kind words are incredibly appreciated. Hope you enjoy our future work as well! -Mol
Woke ff10 🤡
Did anyone ever think that the six characters looked like the cast of friends back when the game came out and friends was still on tv? Maybe I’m just crazy
Didn't cross my mind until you just said it. Who do you think is who? :p - Jack
@@EXP-Podcast Quistis looks like phoebe Rinoa looks like Monica and Selphi looks like Rachel.
Funny for a guy named EXP is required to make a positive video about FF8 cause it is not in this game.
Where’s the full podcast dude ?
open.spotify.com/show/2yiUMPkOAUXRKReeqJBDI2 Is the link.. EXP Required on Spotify This is episode 1 :). Thanks for watching - Jack
The only Final Fantasy that gave me a sense of adventure
It definitely does that :) - Jack
Where is Quina? This is one of the best reasons... And most powerful character
Ah I'm sure Quina might appear in another video ;) - Jack
Just finished my 8th replay this week, love seeing video still made about ff9, my personal top FF game,,lets hope a 1 for 1 remake comes out one day
Thanks for watching:). And here's hoping :) - Jack
My friend played FF7 and I played FF8 when we were kids and would play it on and off for about 20 years. We'd often argue over which was better I think 8 just imprinted on me right away I'll die on the hill that its an amazing game to this day. Honestly if I had the time Id still probably play it today I have it on my ps3 in the attic at my parents house! Favourite parts: Learning and playing the cards over the map always a fun treat. Unlocking new GFs is worth putting in extra time to strengthen characters. The time it takes to beat this game can be weeks or months but never feels boring. LOVE upgrading characters and tracking down items i.e. Squalls sword The story is complicated but brilliant. Constantly upgrading transport walking-car-balamb Garden - Ragnarok. The musical score was something else! The artistry of hundreds of monsters and towns/cities is incredible I don't think many games have ever matched the amount of detail gone into any FF games really. Strategy of fights can be brilliant when you are going to fight fire monsters or whatever the preparing the team for battle and insuring they have the right magics equipped and if you have a weak character adapting them to the fight I always loved this part. Damn I think I'm gonna climb into the attic soon and fish out my ps3!
Awesome! Yeh Final Fantasy games certainly have a unique charm and design to them, and I do love FF8 - Jack
I played it for the first time around 2002 I think but couldn't finish it. I tried to play it several more times but I'm at the very last part for the first time ever now, in 2024. It's one of my favorites so far, but I still need to play 8, 10, 16 and finish 12 and 15. Sometimes they make them so different that it's hard to compare them, to be honest.
Yeh totally! And glad you got back to it. The last dungeon of FF9 is great :) - Jack
It's funny, usual rankings for ff games are 1.7 2.10 3.9 But I'm more 1.8 2.9 3.10/13 the same game essentially just 13 is better graphics. I'd also like to put it out there that 13s graphics were perfect enough for modern FF and we should really be focusing more on side content rather than graphics because ff7 rebirth was a graphical mess, especially with light sources.
Not played Rebirth yet so I'm not sure about the Graphics, but I do agree FF13 still looks beautiful and I'm always up for side content :) - Jack
@EXP-Podcast rebirths a decent game, but I saw myself changing my tv settings often till I realised that it didn't matter. You could stand in 1 spot and see everything perfectly well. Take a quarter step to the side and the background almost dissappear because of flare. That's just 1 of many examples. I appreciate the reply, thank you for hearing me out. Hope you have a great day.
@virtualbunksie5117 No problem. And that's a shame. Hopefully it's something that patches can fix down the line. And that'd cool. Thanks for watching :) - Jack
I'm currently playing thru FF8 for like the 10th time or so, but this time I'm playing with a few mods and it have changed the game completly and it sure is fun to replay it as a "new" game :D
@@Jiiimmie That's awesome. Yeh I know the game so well and would love to play through it again with an extra level of challenge. Is there a Mod in particular you would reccomend? - Jack
@@EXP-Podcast Well currently I'm playing with Succession and it changes it up a bit, like where gfs can be gotten and so on. But I have alot of other minor mods aswell that have more or less "removed" gfs. So the game is kinda "harder", but at the same time not. :)
What part are you on? I just arrived at Esthar and on my way to the lunar gate. Of course I'm going for Doomtrain first. 😊
Not sure if this was click-bait or not. I guess all someone has to do it type "FF8 IS Gr8" and you get an automatic like and comment from me. Now to watch the video.
Hope you enjoyed it :) - Jack
_TIFA REPAIRING CLOUD'S MIND_
That's a pretty important one, yeah! Trying to condense every memorable moment in FF7 is downright impossible, honestly. Might have to make another list sometimes! -Mol"
Well it is also part of the flashback. My favorite section is Jenova-Death to the aforementioned to Zangan's letter to Secret Cinema
@maxamilliansteele6454 Some great stuff in Final Fantasy 7, and alot of missable story content too that's up there with some of the best writing in the series - Jack
As someone who was traumatized as a kid on PS1 with this game of how they punished you for leveling up I will forever hate this game. If they do a remake they better change that. I thought EXP was required. 😂 Apparently not.
Hahaha, you're not alone! I was also one of those kids who levelled up and struggled in (a lot of!) places. Still, I think it's a testament to FF as a whole that even when it doesn't work, they're always open to trying something new! -Mol
Currently playing FF9 and just arrived to Terra... wow. Many jrpgs get monotonous at the end, but this one just keeps surprising me. I'm sad to find out I missed the whole Chocobo side of the game as well as a few weapons. It's not really a "hard game", it puts you in difficult situations for sure. Oielbert was the hardest for me because I had Vivi and Dagger on board, with no magic to use and down to my last potions while fighting the battleship... the rest of the game has been so far, a confortable and charming ride. The story and visuals are most amazing in this game, it's like a work of art... I just recently got reminded of that, when I arrived to Terra
I'm really glad you're enjoying it. Plenty of great stuff left to experience. Plus I'm pretty sure you can still do all the Chocobo stuff on Disc 4. Terra also has an incredible soundtrack - Jack
@@EXP-Podcast I just finished it, it has truly been one of the greatest games I have played. What incredible boss fights, just when I thought I wouldn't make it, I did....and what an ending.
@@peloi111 An absolute classic. I bawled my eyes out the first time I watched it :) - Jack
I'm 33 years old now, but this was my first video game. I was so bad at it back then, but now i could beat this game with my eyes closed
Brilliant :)
Thank you:) - Jack
Love it :)
Thanks mate - Jack
This was always my favorite. For 23 years…until 16. But my dog is named Dagger haha love 9 so much!!!!
That's so cool! Yeh FF9 has a special place for me as well - Jack
That whole nibelheim section still haunts me it was horrific and so powerful even for a ps1 game
Absolutely. An incredibly iconic scene, and one that seems to show up in some way in every FF7 Spinoff. The game is so good at making you hate Sephiroth! - Jack
Thanks for the video! FFIX is one of my favourite games.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed, and me too :) - Jack
indeed. Keep the card rules simple, dont let them spread
Yep. Can't afford to lose all your cards for one mistake... - Jack
HD remaster looks like crap, I'm glad you used the ps1 OG for the majority of the footage 👍
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.I didn't have a huge problem with FF9's HD version. Thought it was much better than the treatment FF8 got - Jack
