Cut Test - Miguron Moyarl
𝗖𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 - 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗹
In this video we’re continuing with some basic cut tests with a few well known knives (Miguron Moyarl here) to get a baseline of how well the edge holds up in cutting different material. I’m also looking to see how comfortable it is with some harder materials that require a firmer grip. Using these well-known knives should give us a baseline to compare some of the replica knives that everyone seems to be wondering about. Let the testing begin!

A Knife From OKK That Looks Like A Shark Cub
I sometimes like to run my finger nail along the edge of the blade. You can find exactly where the defect is that way
use ronson lighter fluid to take tape off works like a champ
I've got it. With micarta and access lock ..! ^^
Without first sharpening it you may be a victim of factory burned edge..hopefully after a few sharpenings the edge holding will improve...btw I don't like that Miguron model the handle feels quite blocky...love your channel excellent info
I purchased the clone Bodacious and did the same cardboard test that you did here and it held up well, cut a bit of cardboard still catching fingernail and a little spotty shaving arm hair but definitely worth the $$...I ended up buying the real Spyderco Bodacious and it is really nice,.....keep up the awesome info
If you're on a mission to test and compare blade sharpness, edge retention, etc, I recommend you check out Project Farm's recent review. There are just too many variables testing without measurement and controlled pressure, action, etc. I am enjoying the channel and video, and hope you have a great holiday and New Year. ua-cam.com/video/p744t7uAXjE/v-deo.html
Another great video! I'd like to try something like this. I need to figure out how to set up the camera, etc.
Miguron isn't known for a great heat treat, more like average or slightly below.
If I send you my knife, will you sharpen it?😅
Where are you finding your steel graphs? I’d love to see a full spreadsheet if available! Super easy to read / use! On a side note.. I own this knife. I returned the first one I bought because they had superglued or loctited the pivot screw and even after 5 + mins of a heatgun, I was unable to remove the pivot without stripping... the second one was not glued and I was able to disassemble and reassembly easily. I love the action and the feel. I was thinking of knocking down or rounding off some of the G-10 because it is boxy.... but otherwise my edge has held up well and stropped back just fine. I enjoy this knife and wonder what the premium version feels like in comparison.
Knife Steel Nerds. Look at the previous vid, Fred goes in to more depths
Just FYI, I really like your channel, so I plugged it in my latest video on my favorite knives of 2024. It's a crappy video, but hopefully it will send some folks to your channel.

It's not only real m390,but also has a hrc of 62,for the money this is a beast...
Where did you see that it was HRC tested? I’d love to get a copy of that too.
@@BladesOnABudget I have the black version and i found a test on reddit of the steel and rockwell, both with pictures. It's also very noticeable when you go sharpen this knife,This budget knife has one of the hardest steels in my collection, surpriced me too...Thank you and have a nice day!
I love AR-RPM9 because it’s so easy to sharpen and remove the burr. However there is no way it’s edge retention is a 5.5 compared to the other steels. RPM9 should be close to 9CR but with better toughness not edge retention.
Yeah it looks like you made a mistake on the rpm9. The chart says 4.5 edge retention but the graph says 5.5.
Yeah, sorry. You’re right. I went back to look at my charts & realized that the Ar-RPM9 chart pulled in the wrong data. Totally screwed that one up! I’ll try to do an update to correct that. 😂🤷♂️
The pocket screws on the clone Spydercos are M2.5 usually. Most of the body screws are as well. Just get yourself a tapered dremel reaming bit. Doesn't need to be name brand. Put the bit in a drill and problem solveded.
Yep. I may do a short little video and ream out those holes with a dremel to get the original screws to fit. thanks!
I always enjoyed your tutorials and look forward to the always on a different subject I've always learned to improvise adapt as we say in the real roll with it , the tiny leverage I need to put on my wish list. I immediately took it ?? I remember we all have something similar to that nail clippers some have small files and some leverage for cutting with no sharp edges. Perfect for prying gently without scratching surfaces.😊 Anyway I just thought I'd share that.
Thanks man!
I have this model, but with a red plastic handle instead of Carbon. It has exactly the same shapes and features as the one shown in the video, with the red anodized details. Except that the blade is very black. And for a Benchmade, it is the best handle I have ever held, it is thick and very comfortable, incomparable with the Bugout. With grooves on the handle up to the blade to rest the thumb on it and have a better grip. Too bad the pocket clip is not deeper, it leaves part of the handle sticking out when it is in the pocket. For a question of discretion and aesthetics, I prefer to carry my knives with deep clips. For those who have the real one, it is far from being a detail given the price of the knife. I will never understand how such an expensive knife manufacturer (also like Spyderco) can still sell this type of clip that lets the knife handle stick out of the pocket. To avoid customers having to look for deep clips on AliExpress for example. As I had to do with the Spyderco Delica 4 clone, the Ganzo F759M which is compatible with the deep clips of the Delica 4. You just have to enlarge the holes by half a size for the screws on the Ganzo, and it's not so easy, because my clip is made of Titanium ! I broke a high-end French brand "Tivoly" drill bit using my drill, but it wasn't the range with Cobalt. So, I bought new drill bits with Cobalt so that it doesn't happen to me again. But I still managed to enlarge the holes and install the clip which is deep, but also black so invisible, unlike the original one which is chrome. In black, it immediately gives a better appearance to the knife, I think. And in Titanium, it adds value. ----------------------- To return to the knife in the video The model I have does not exist at Benchmade with the red handle, it only exists in Carbon. It was not expensive on Temu, from memory, around 12€. So, I bought it and I find it very original with its red handle really pleasant to hold. There is the brand logo on the blade and on the other side, "S90V" written very neatly under the thumbstud. I found it funny to own a Benchmade that you will never be able to find on the official store! And the contrast between the red handle and the black blade is magnificent. Benchmade should take inspiration from their copies. For use, the Axis-Lock mechanism, the assembly, the centering of the blade and the cutting quality, I have nothing negative to say, everything is perfect ! The blade steel is not S90V obviously, certainly 440, but this knife cuts very well and for 12€, it is well worth its price, even much more.
I discovered that Windex works just as well to get that tape residue 😊 I already have a designated Amazon knife. Vision a knife that has gone under radar. It has a great belly so you can use the whole edge.I you it for small food tasks in a restaurant when she want share something 😊.
Yeah, this is a good one for food prep. Maybe a good camping knife that can do most anything, including food prep. Kind of like the Spyderco Spydiechef with the handle & blade design. 👍
I don’t think it looks like a benchmade. The kydex sheath maybe a little.
This is the only non US made knife ive been contemplating. Cardboard may be soft but it does a number on knife edges
I think I’m going to sharpen it back up & give it another try. I think it can do better than it did here on this test. But still a really great knife. Strops back to sharp very easily.
So... VG 10... 😅 It's ok, Fred! I accidentally say F sharp instead of F major sometimes😅
😂 Thanks man. 🤷♂️
I'm looking forward to more cut testing. I find that being able to stropping a knife back to a usable working edge is very important to me. I made a 4 sided oak strop that is 5/8" wide by 12" long. I glued a piece of leather 7" long on all 4 sides and applied CBN abrasive in, 1,4,8 and 16 micron marking each side accordingly. I find this narrow strop is easier to use than some of the wider strops available in the market place. This strop is very handy and works on all steels because of the CBN solutions used.
Hey man. That’s a great idea! I was thinking that 5/8” sounds pretty thin, but I guess that’s like a 4 sided Worksharp Field sharpener strop. Those work pretty well for me. You should think about doing some videos man. You always have good ideas. Seriously. 👍
@@BladesOnABudget No, I'm not into that, but I do enjoy watching video's. I am more than happy to share information when I find something that is simple and beneficial to anyone that is interested.
Another great video, thanks!
Hiya Fred, thanks for another one! Would it be possible to do a cut comparison video of a knock off vs the real deal? I'd be quite interested in seeing how a s30v/s45vn/m390 or whatever steel the clone claims vs a verified steel turns out..
Great idea
I’m not aware of any replicas of the Vision. But the whole reason I’m starting with these real knives is to give us a baseline of how well they do so I can then start testing all of the Temu & OKK knives to see how those compare against these real versions where we know the steel is “good”. I’m betting that some of the replicas are going to compete really well! 👍
As I’m sure a lot of people will comment, it’s Nitro-V not VG10. Both respectable knife steels! Also I never expect a factory edge to last long or really perform that well. I’d definitely recommend sharpening it yourself when comparing steels.
😂 Just a bunch of rookies over here! I always get those 2 confused in my brain. Nitro-V is a good budget steel. Strops back very easily. But yeah, I was a little disappointed this one didn’t do better. I’m going to sharpen it up & give it another shot. I think with a good edge it should do better. 👍
I just bought a vision fg after black Friday. The white Damascus version and got it for $70! I haven't put it down since lol. I got a kizer amicus with nitro v and its a pretty great steel tho! Sharpens up really really nicely!
That’s a great deal on that Vision! Good find. And yes, the Nitro-V is definitely one of the better steels to sharpen back pretty quickly. You can basically strop it back pretty fast. 👍
If you want to operate with numbers not just feelings in your steels comparison you should measure total length of cuts on cardboard.
Not sure I’m ready to elevate the channel to that level of professionalism yet. 😂 But yeah, I need to work on a little better way of at least measuring something in order to make these comparisons meaningful. I am at least keeping track of the total square inches of the cardboard pieces that I start with. I’ll work on some charts that we can look at once I get a couple of knives going & then just keep updating that so everyone can see all of the knives tested as we do each new one. 👍
@BladesOnABudget level of professionalism 🤣
Nice
Good information! I definitely don't support clones and copying designs. But it is nice to see a video that showcases some differences between the real and fake. Thank you!
Can't believe you said " balls" that many times without giggling. You're a better man than I.
😂😂
Ya i had to burr open the holes on a ti clip to get it to fit on my yojimbo 2.
Yep. That's up next. Thanks!
Throw that new clip on on the drill press, 2min fix
Yep. That's up next. Thanks!
Do you use real skiff bearings or do you buy fake Chinese rip off crap bearings to match the crap knives you have?
😂 Real skiffs.
instead of crying on the internet about something so minuscule you should go get a life bud
Most US knives use sae and the clones are usually metric. Unfortunate because similar threads would have helped me more than once.
But its a Chinese replica knife with Chinese pocket clip. You'd think that they should match up. 😂 🤷♂️
FYI, Asian made knives use metric screws/fasteners and American made knives use SAE screws/fasteners. If your knife is a clone of an American made knife made in Asia it will be metric. American designed knives made in Asia will use metric. Hope this helps.
Al spyderco knives, most knives US or foreign us metric because it makes for much tighter tolerances and more accurate fit
@@TCCBLADES I have a couple of dozen Spyderco knives made in Golden Colorado U.S.A and they have SAE standard 2-56 screws holding the pocket clips on, that is not a metric screw.
its a Chinese replica knife with Chinese pocket clip. You'd think that they should match up. 😂 🤷♂️
@@BladesOnABudget Some metric pocket clip screws are M2 and some are M2.5. There is no standard in the clone world of pocket knives. I have acquired a supply of the most used metric and SAE screws for my knife hobby along with drills and taps for any issues that arise.
I put new ceramic detents in all my spyderco knives. All real spyderco knives come with steel detents. It can make a huge difference all the way to doing nothing at all. It depends on the knife.
good suggestion. thanks!
You should have an affiliate link for skiffs, or maybe it is, i don't know. Got my OKK "shaman" need to install the skiffs in it, otherwise I really like it.
No respectable company would ever associate with this channel that promotes fake knives
Thanks. It's not an affiliate link. I just recommend them anyway because they're good. But I do track how many people click on the link for my own curiosity.
@@JoeSmith-ym5zfthat's weird to say , considering the owner of Winter Blade sent Fred a free Winter Blade knife to review. And Winter Blade is the most innovative knife maker in the world
I've successfully swapped the deep carry clip on this one, Fits perfect and works better than on the PM2 clone
did you have to drill the holes to widen them? Or did your screws fit?
@@BladesOnABudget Sorry, I lied, I did drill the holes to make them a little bigger. It's been a long time.
I drilled out the holes in the titanium clip I bought its not a big deal , but yes Spyderco uses a smaller diameter screw in their clips .
There is a lot of clones the Ali clips screw holes are too small for. I have a tapered Dremel reamer bit that works wonderfully. You don't have to use a Dremel even. I just put it in a drill and it makes easy work of it.
I have to reuse the screws every time with every clip I have bought on AE. And yes you will need to make the holes a little larger. Not really a big deal. Drill or dremel will get the job done..
That's up next! Thanks!
I love skiffs. Made my smock perfect
me too. 👍
I got my Titanium clips for Rock Jumper and Endurance 4 from Amazon for $12 and they came with screws and fit perfect😊
I guess maybe if the knife wasn't a replica it might have worked. 😂 🤷♂️
first
nice charts!
thanks man! 👍
It's so easy to get sucked into the "steel snob" abyss, but I'd be willing to bet good money that 90% of us will never need a high dollar super steel for our day to day uses. That being said, I'm guilty lol. Honestly, at the end of the day those super steels translate to way harder to sharpen when that time comes. My s30v, 14c, vg10, nitro v, s35/45vn works great and can be easily brought back to life with a basic stone/strop..
True that! 👍
I think that you did an incredible job of simplifying the original charts to easy-to-understand charts! Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us!
Thanks man. 😊
Great video......Ive done all the same research and IMO your best budget steel dollar for dollar is a Cold Steel Aus10A. The best higher end steels (for me) if you are looking for well rounded-ness are cpm S35VN and Magnacut.
Thanks man. You're the first vote for the Aus10A. Interesting... 👍
This is a well put together video but with one assumption that is of issue. Larrins testing only tells part of the story and is directly comparing the composition to one another but in a method that doesn't tell that much about daily use in a production knife. Cartra testing of steels that are all heat treated to a very specific spec and with blade geometry that is identical in a lot of cases leaves far different out comes when it comes to real world and that's been well discussed on the forums with larrins input. By larrins numbers something like 154cmshould give xhp a run for its money in edge retention but as with many testers have proved and I my self have tested with single medium cut tests xhp will cut significantly more. This has been shown many many times in sisal and card board cut testing. Cartra gives you an idea of a steels wear resistance that is only really accurate when cutting silica impregnated card stock but many times the numbers do not work out the way the list would have people believe. This is well discussed in the forums where larrins has chimed in many times. All his coupons of steel are running small batch custom heat treatments that we never will see the quality of in production knives so that's a big part of it as well as the way Cartra testing breaks down an edge is not something that we see in typical cutting tasks so the edge retention numbers do not translate over to the real world all that well. While larrins is a genius and his write ups are amazing his edge retention testing doesn't really show the even close to the complete picture for Edc knives. The ratings for stainless factor and toughness carry right over to the production world but edge retention ratings do not because of the test method don't allow it to. Normal use doesn't dull a knife in the same way Cartra testing does specifically because of the way the card stock is designed to a messure wear resistance. With his heat treating protocols, his coupon geometry the edge retention ratings are only accurate at directly comparing the composition when cutting that single media that is abraiding the steel only as that card stock does. This is not me trying to act like I know more than larrin, I absolutely do not but what I do know is use and testing as well as knife making here and there.. In my testing his edge retention ratings are on point in some cases and not even close in others. These is plenty of discussion about this with larrin chiming in on the forums.
Thanks for the very well-considered feedback. I’d say that you obviously know your stuff there. And yes, I would agree that what we see in the real world is likely different than what some of those tests and ratings indicate. Given your experience, what do you think are some of the better budget steels?
your numbers for ar-rpm9 are skewed ... it will have the same edge retention and more toughness , you gain no edge retention from improving the type of steel i.e. ingot , spray form and powder. those arbitrary numbers are a rating numbers , what I mean is for example 420Hc has toughness of 9 as does a 14c28n but if you look deeper that toughness rating covers a span of measured numbers and 14c is at the low end of a 9 rating while 420hc is at the high end of the 9 rating so when you are talking the fine points of knife steel you have to go deeper when making broad sweeping claims about the steels. To make that easier to understand lets convert a rating to a percentage 14c28n vs 440C 3 vs 4.5 in edge retention 440C has a 50% increase in edge retention that is noticeable in the real world. 14c28n is overpriced in the current market place stay away from it for anything over $45 in standard form full titanium type of knife $100 or less.
Yeah, you're right. Same edge retention & more toughness. I got those backwards. Good catch! Interesting that you don't like 14c as Larrin did an article where he specifically says that he thinks 14c is the best budget steel. It's definitely good for toughness & corrosion. But I do agree that the "old" steels like 440C & D2 just don't get enough credit for good basic EDC knives these days. Thanks!
@@BladesOnABudget its not that I dont like 14c I dont like it at the current market price point and as a side note Dr.Larrin made that comment a few years ago when it was still at budget steel prices ......... these days well known makers are throwing 14c on a basic sandwiche build knife with g10 handles and wanting to charge $85 because every utuber out there is pushing it .I dont like it on a folding knife unless the knife is intentionally built for hard use , I do like it on hard use implements like machetes , camp knives and the such because that is what the steel is best at. One awesome aspect 14c28n is it is super easy to sharpen on the flip side of that if you can remove metal ( sharpening ) easily so can what your cutting.
Would you ever consider doing budget steel testing clips?
Yep. Great suggestion! Just recorded the first couple of cut tests this week. Will be out next week sometime. Still testing “baseline” knives (good brands with known quality steel) so we have something to compare the unknown steel to.
Awesome video Fred!
Thanks man! 👍
