This song perfectly expresses how you feel after losing someone you love dearly, but it also speaks to times when you're disappointed with your life. You fantasize of the next stage or goal so much that you miss the good of the now. "What a tragedy to awake and see that I never learned to stay" is one if the best lines I've ever heard.

I’m not sure if he ever shared why he wrote it but it was about losing his best friend. At that point, I think it was very fresh that’s why he probably couldn’t talk about it. He does wipe tears from his face toward the end of the song. Beautifully written. Brought me to tears when I heard it live.
