DIY mounting trolling motor on kayak.
Переглядів 3513 роки тому
I mounted a minn kota endura C2 30 lb thrust motor on my kayak with joystick controls. I scoured the interwebs for ideas and came up with this. I've had it on the water 1 time so far and it works great. I am using a PWM controller for the motor to save energy, fine tune speeds and allow remote control. let me know what you think.
First time out on the kayak with DIY trolling motor.

I finished the kayak last weekend and took it to a local lake to test it out. I worked great and went off without a hitch. wish I would have done this a long time ago. Next stop is to get it registered and hit the lakes!

A really fun "fort" to explore and it is right off the highway. It does take a little extra to get to though. the exit is not at the fort. A great place to let your imagination go wild. Where there battles fought here? Was this someone's home at one time?

The biggest thing about stability is there is always a tradeoff between primary and secondary stability but usually less primary and more secondary stability means your kayak will be more maneuverable and handle better but some things do require more primary stability to do more comfortably
@@imperialwhovian3461 it was just a poor design imo. Prof in that they discontinued it almost immediately due to the backlash Hoodoo got from the people like me that bought them. I never heard a report of anybody liking them. Heard from many people that reached out to me after tipping their kayaks.
@keithfoco thanks for that extra info, personally I have a knarr but I know.somr people looking into hoodoo but it's hard to tell sometimes unless you can try it
How stable is it sir? I bought the second gen and is crazy unstable ☹️ I have the first gen and is very stable compared to the second gen.
@@josenarvaez5338 yea, it’s crazy unstable. I got rid of it and got a perception showdown 11.5. I can stand on it comfortably.
@ I’m planning to do the same. I’m looking at the Hobie pro angler
@ that is a great choice.
So I tried adding the amounts you mentioned but was maybe 1/3 quarts and it was getting full full. How full do you get it? I’m a mechanic and most front and rear diff gears on trucks are about half submerged in the oil. Is there noticeable resistance when pedaling? I feel that I want to take some out so it’s got the air pocket in there for oil movement and might make the system spin more freely?
@Tanner_Johnson it's been a while so I don't remember exactly, but it took about the same. Pedals easy. There is a bit of air in there also. I don't own the kayak any longer, so I cannot go back and confirm. I got a perception showdown 11.5 last June and I did the same to the pilot drive and it has been nice. Helped smooth it out and make it quieter. After a year of good use, I have zero problems.
@@keithfoco did you notice any more resistance to the pedals because of the oil in there? Not meaning smoother but firmer to rotate cause it’s moving oil now? Just curious. Mine is full of oil not but seemed like it took slightly more effort to turn now. Haven’t had it on the water yet.
I think this is what i need to do . Mine squeaks occasionally. It my first yr with it.
You won't regret it. I did it to my perception showdown kayak also.
Great video. I'm 6'4'', I went through tons of videos trying to find another tall person to see if they fit. Thanks for the main point I was trying to find haha.
Glad it was helpful!
What size is that cable?
it is sold as 1/16" coated steel. It is actually more like 3/16"
@@keithfoco thank you thinking about upgrading my hobie steering as well
Are there forward facing rod holders?
No, there are not. You can mount some on the side rails though. The kayak is narrow and you really need to be particular about which ones you get. I went with yak attack AR tube style and they worked the best. "Normal" rod holders will allow the butts of the rods extend too far into the kayak and interfere with your pedaling.
Just visited at the start of 2024. It's sad about how this has been virtually abandoned and apparently has no oversight at all. The parking area is blocked off with a big tree trunk now but that doesn't seem to stop any vandals. The view as seen in this clip shows it to be relatively clean compared to how we found it. As of January 2024, virtually every rock surface on the inside is covered with spray-painted graffiti. We also found no signs or markers identifying what this was or any of its history.
The amount of carving into the rocks is tragic. I saw a bit of graffiti before. I am sure it's a lot worse now. Video was made a couple years ago.
That was my 1st kayak. I'm in my 5th season now. I had the same color. I ran the Bixpy J2 motor, and that is a fast, stable, awesome vessel. 🛶 🎣🌊
Yea, you have the old, stable one. The new tempest is super tippy. Ask anyone who owns one.
@@keithfocoI own the hybrid which it’s fairly stable I’m 6’0 175 and I’m able to stand and fish comfortably.
@@AydenGoff when did you purchase it? What type of drive unit does it have?
@@keithfocoI got it this year at my local line cutters i sure it’s the standard pedal drive. don’t think it’s the 2023 version I can see difference’s between ours but I’m upgrading to the trolling motor on Friday.
I just purchased one of these waiting for delivery. How long did it take to be delivered for you and how stable is it to stand up on? I've been using a Menards $150.00 sit in kayak to fish for years but I'm getting older and paddling 6+ hours a day isn't as easy as it used to be hence the peddle drive and i also need to stand once in awhile to stretch a bit. I'm hoping this will work out for me? nice run through!
It took a couple months to get it. Problem is the shipping from China takes forever. Then it has to go to Texas from California and then to wherever you are. The primary stability is terrible and it's super shaky to stand up on. The secondary stability is pretty decent. Meaning: it seems tippy but will not tip until it's really far over. I got rid of it because I needed it to have better primary stability. Opinions are all over the place. People say it's stable, some say it isn't. I never felt comfortable standing in it at all. The 1st gen tempest was very stable and what I was originally thought I was getting. I thought the 2nd gen version was going to be better but it isn't. If I were you, I would cancel the order and get a perception crank 10 or a perception showdown if you are looking for the most stable fishing platform for the best price. The old towns and the Jackson's are super stable as well, but quite a bit more money. I picked my showdown up at REI a couple months ago for $1900.
Just to add: Hoodoo customer service is terrible and I will not be buying or recommending their kayaks...ever.
Mine is frozen up at this point... kinda wary of opening it. I do saltwater
What do you have to lose?
Here now
Sad about all of the graffiti. Wish people could leave it alone and just enjoy the place without carving it to pieces.
@@keithfoco agreed.
Update: I no longer own the tempest 120p. it was not as stable as I preferred. I never tipped it, but I bought two hoping that friends could join me on fishing trips. I dont trust that any of my friends could not tip those. Wish I had gotten the 1st gen tempest like I ordered. Hoodoo was supposed to swap me out for the implulse with prop drive, but they could never get any, so I sold them and got a perception showdown 11.5. much better kayak even though it was $500 more. Luckily, I got my money back by selling the tempests. They would be great kayaks if they were a couple inches wider or had a tunnel hull. I loved the pedal drive. It was really smooth and efficient. Great design.
they updated it for the 2024 year. The plastic is much thicker and it’s also made in texas now. Changed the design to make it much more stable than the GEN two
That is great. I will not be buying any hoodoo kayaks due to how they treated me.
Which size blackpack if you have one fits in the back buddy?
I used a plastic file box. It fit perfectly and held a bunch of tackle boxes. I no longer have the tempests. got rid of them and got a perception showdown 11.5. 1000% more stable.
@@keithfoco damn so do you think I wasted my money?or is it ok for a beginner?
@Thomas Randolph it could be great for a beginner. Being a bit tippy, It will train you to balance to perfection! Any other kayak will be a breeze. You just have to put it in the water and see how you like it. I didn't have any trouble and never tipped over in it, but I never felt comfortable moving around or standing up in it. When I originally ordered the kayak, I thought I was getting the more stable 1st gen tempest. What I got was the 2nd gen and hoodoo wouldn't refund me or let me return it.
If you notice, Hoodoo has removed all the photos and reviews of the tempest. They also removed the part of the description where they say it is stable. They had so many complaints and bad reviews, they just cleaned the website of anything negative.
@@keithfoco damn..well I'll just have to see for myself. My parents bought it for my birthday so it's not money out of my pocket but I'm also not being ungrateful. I didn't do any more research on others cause I was stuck on the price point and they were able to swing it thankfully.i might be ok cause I've been on a yak that was sketchy and fished fine so gotta see
Would this be better or a bonafide rs117 that’s a good paddling boat?
Bonafide for sure
@@keithfoco thank you the rs117 is my leave but I found a tempest 120p near me for the same price used. So was considering this for a pedal kayak but love the bonafide quality.
@Zack Morehouse kind of depends on which tempest it is. The old tempest is a lot more stable than the new tempest. It's why I got rid of both of my tempests. The kayak is tough, fairly well built , but lacks stability and the ability for shorter people to use them. If you are under 5'4", you can't even pedal it because your feet won't reach the pedals.
@@keithfoco I am 6’ but wouldn’t want pedals at the cost of stability. I think I will stick to the paddle kayaks I am looking at if that’s the case
@@zackmorehouse fyi-REI has the perception showdown 11.5 on sale for $1911 right now! I just ordered one!
I may issues with my o-rings. I did as the video shows. and I have oil leaking out of the pedal assembly hub. The one taken off to get at the gears(left side). Oddly, the propeller gears DO NOT leak. I want to go back to grease. Would that hurt anything?
You may have a bad seal on the axle. If that is the case, you could see if hoodoo will get you a new side seal or remove the lubricant and go back to grease.
I tried tipping as much as I could but it's really solid. They seems to have a second boyouncy system like hobie
You are correct. There is a secondary tipping point that is fairly difficult to get to. The problem most people have is that primary roll is rough for some people to adjust to. I've had mine out a lot and thought I was going to tip over, but never did. My initial ride in it made me very nervous, but I felt more and more comfortable in it the more I used it.
Great video, thank you!
Thanks! It makes a world of difference filling that case with lube.
What battery r you using
I was just using a car battery at the time.
Great vid...I like that you actually stated how much oil each reservoir takes, and that the gears are constantly bathed in lubricant. In most propeller drives, you can hear the gears making a low growling noise as they're turning...did replacing grease with gear oil quiet that down any? Subbed, Stay Safe!
Thanks! And yes, the gears quieted down substantially.
@@keithfoco Perfect! I have a Hammerhead Kayaks Bull Shark. I'll look closely into making the same conversion! Stay Safe!
@DEADorALIVE Kayaking you will love it even more after doing this.
Looks nice..do you have a video of the TM install?
I do not because it morphed so many times. I actually wound up selling it last fall because it was a lot of work to get on and off the water. Also wound up costing more to register and since it had a motor, it needed inspected before I could put it in many lakes around here. I went with a pedal kayak and am a lot happier. It sucks because it worked great and was a lot of fun. Would've loved to put a more powerful motor on it.
Better silicone the hull lol.
Why would I need to silicone the hull?
What's the sourcefor the spanner wrench?
Amazon. Search variable pin spanner wrench. Holes in side plate are 5mm.
Thanks man! I have 2 of these kayaks
Awesome! They are so fun.
Is there a way to do it without the wrench?
I am not really sure. You might be able to make.a spanner wrench that could work. There is a little flimsy one at harbor freight that I initially got for it. It worked but was squirrely and the pins were very loose. It was cheap, like $8.
Mine came the same way as well. I also found that the steering cord that came with the yak loved to bind against each other. It's a bit more involved, but I bought some bicycle brake hose and cables to replace the cord. It removed all of the binding and friction.
I almost went with the bicycle cables. I bet it works great.
Thanks for the vid. Just got one of these for my son and added the oil the first day we had it. He loves this kayak.
No problem! Glad I could be of assistance! Enjoy your kayak/s. I am really enjoying my pedal kayak over every other type so far.
Love it. How did you make the joy stick swivel?
I used a pvc 4-way tee, a half inch pipe and then a flat piece of pvc, folded and glued so I could mount the remote controls. I used clamps around the tee to keep the joystick in place and create enough friction to hold it. The joystick extended out the bottom a few inches where I had a metal eyelet that was connected to the steering cables. I wish I had a better video or photo of the setup, but I don't. I don't have the kayak any longer. As much as I loved it, I sprung for a new 2023 hoodoo tempest 120p pedal kayak. I went with pedal-power because they don't need to be registered or inspected in Colorado. I know, stupid. But I really like the pedal kayaks over battery power because I can still get some exercise but not feel wrecked at the end of the day. Pedalling is surprisingly easy for me, since I have a bicycling background.
Where did you get the trolling motor mount?
After further explanation I can see its wood!. That's awsome! I have the same yak and was wondering how I was going to mount the motor in the back.
I made it out of some scrap plywood I had laying around. I used a black poly stain on it.
Would have been a good video building it
Thank you so much for making this video. I just purchased a tempest 120p and was wondering how to change the gear oil when the time came. One question do you know how often it is recommended change the oil?
Thanks for the compliment! I would say that it never needs replaced unless it gets dirty or leaks somehow. May be a good idea to check it every season just to be safe.
Any tips on assembly and fish finder placement and wiring ?
@@medic2922 yes! If you have a standard-sized transducer, it easily fits in the slot under the hull with the bracket that came with your fish finder. I ran the cable up through the nearest skupper hole. I have a small lithium battery that I keep in the front compartment. I just run the cables into that compartment. You just have to make sure your cables stay outside of the pedal arc. I just run my cables through the anchor rope and it keeps them out of the way perfectly. If you want to get fancy, you van buy connectors that run through the hull/deck of the boat. You can find a lot of different options on Amazon, or at your local paddling store. This is the best method but requires some cabke cutting and wire terminal crimping that you may need to learn how to do or pay someone to do it for you. When I get a kayak I am planning on keeping forever, I will do this. I may not keep the tempest because I am looking for a lighter, smaller kayak at the moment. Who knows? I may keep it. Just haven't decided.
My was backwards too, easy adjustment. But the cable itself was super stretchy, I replaced it with 30lbs coated metal braid, but even that was too stretchy. Going to 100lb
Sounds like.a good plan.
Great video
Thanks!
On my vibe kayak, the rudder chords always stretched. So I used nylon coated fishing leader instead and never stretched a bit. Thanks for the Vid!
I never thought of fishing leader. I wound up using 1/16" coated stainless steel wire. Sonar so good. Haven't had to adjust it ever since.
Hey thanks for this, the steering threw me off as well.. Was it hard to feed the line back into the steering handle compartment?
No, not at all. It's easily accessed through the hatch under the seat.
@@keithfoco I just got done with it.. wasn’t bad at all, the only problem I ran into was the tubing the line ran through near the steering handle, it would get pulled into the steering handle compartment, I twisted the tubing a couple times and it settled, doesn’t seem like the two lines rub either so I think we’re good on that. Thanks again, without your video, I wouldn’t be brave enough to do it.. now on to the shims for the latches..
@@txrex great job! As a professional mechanic, the easiest part of my job is usually taking something apart! Lol. Getting it back together is something different sometimes! A lot of people fear that initial feeling that they have to take it apart and not knowing how. Part of the intrigue is learning what some engineer came up with to make it work!
@@keithfoco idk who designed the new model but boy was he out of it.. lol not a bad kayak though, just needed a little tinkering. Tight lines Keith!
@@txrex I think it was more the people who put them together. Not sure they understood the instructions. I think whoever designed it did a great job.
Thanks very much your review. I am looking into this Hoodoo kayak. What is your weight? My weight is 170. Can I stand up stably? Do you get water coming out of scuppers? Is the rudder system smooth and easy to use? Looking forward to your answers.
Thanks for your kind comments! I am 6'2" and weight 200lbs. I cannot stand up comfortably in the Temptest 120p gen2 (2023 model). It really isnt designed for stability as much as it is for speed and maneuverability. It will initially feel a bit unstable, but I have not flipped it and actually feel comfortable in it. I would compare it to a touring kayak, but more stable than that. It is pretty fast. I can cruise along at 4 mph (gps speed) for quite a while. it is great at trolling. I have not removed my scupper plugs, so I cannot comment on how much water comes through them. I would imagine that not much water would come up. The hull is very tall and the scupper holes are very long compared to other kayaks I have owned. As for the steering, I had a few issues when i first got it that were fairly easy to fix. I replaced the stretchy string that was supplied with 1/16" vynil coated wire. I also had to swap the cables on the steering spindle because it was initially setup backwards. It steers great now and has a pretty tight turning radius. The Tempest is a great kayak, but will need some tweaking before heading out on the water for the first time. You will need to shim the pedal drive clips and add some weather stripping to the pedal drive cover or it leaks pretty badly. Ive had it out quite a few times and I really like how fast and smooth it glides through the water. I also filled the pedal drive unit compartments with gear lube and what a difference that made. It is so much smoother than when it was new. Let me know if you have any more questions.
The tempest is not the most stable kayak. With your weight, I say you may be able to stand up. I'm 6'2" and am not comfortable standing at all. I would recommend the impulse if stability is a priority. I'm 200 lbs.
Thanks for making these! Will do this for sure
Thank you. As a side note: I had the kayak out yesterday and it is so quiet and .uch smoother than without the gear lube.
@@keithfoco So it looks like you added to Gear Oil or did you replace it completely?
@@RandJ1996 it did not come with gear lube initially. It just had some grease smeared on the gears. Each drive unit has 2 separate compartments that I filled up.
@@keithfoco REALLY. That's strange, one would think it would use gear lube. Did you remove the grease before adding the fluid? Also, have you thought about replacing the propeller? I was thinking about using one from Minn Kota.....
@@RandJ1996 I did not remove the grease before adding gear lubricant. There is such a small amount, I don't think it is going make a difference either way.
Thanks for posting this video. Is there a paddle holder? I didn't see the paddle on your kayak in the video. Also, is the transducer mount big enough to fit Lowerance side imaging transducer? (its' about 10inches long)
Thanks! There is not a paddle holder. Not sure if hoodoo is going to send ones out or not. The website says they are supposed to come with a paddle mount. I will shoot an email off to them soon about that. The transducer mount will only fit the smaller, standard transducer. There is a cutout in the back where the old style rudder fits that may accommodate the larger sidescan transducer.
@@keithfoco Thanks for a quick reply! Might have to use a scupper hole mount kit. Strange cause my Element 100 has one for 10".....but no pedal drive.
@@RandJ1996 that is interesting. I guess ot depends on who is designing the kayak and when. The gen1 tempest does not have any transducer cutout. I tell you what...it is nice having it because I don't have to hassle with it anymore. I just plug it in and go.
@@keithfoco Yep, that's how I have it set up on my Element. I just plug it in, quick connect the screen and battery and go. ALl the wires stay on the kayak (I have them routed inside, few little holes with rubber grommet). Works great. If I buy the Tempest, I will have to use the scupper hole to mount it somewhere where it wont rub. PS. HooDoo seems to be really good on upgrading the kayaks with random mods, but not so good with detailed/up do date pictures/descriptions on the website.
@@RandJ1996 just know that if you buy a tempest 120p, it is not as stable as the gen1. If stability I'd high on your list of priorities, get the impulse. (This is what I hear. I have no experience with the new impulse)
Did hoodoo run the rudder. If so they ran it wrong it should cross over passed the handle. Mine was done right got mine a year ago. I have some videos on both top and bottom mount rudder mods for better turning. Check it out and enjoy the tempest I love mine.
You have gen1. This issue is coming up on all of the gen2 tempests. I will check out your info, im not sure any applies to the gen2., but we will see.
@@keithfoco what did they change on gen 2s didn't even realize they had a difference. I'll have too look. 🍻
@@keithfoco I see they changed the front hatch and you get a top mount rudder. But the shape seems the same other than the molded in handles on the side. Does it still come with bottom rudder option too.
@@keithfoco how does it turn that new rudder design looks terribly inefficient turn radius.
@@covidisevent201 a lot. Totally different kayak body. A lot less stable than the gen1. Molded in cup holder, drop down rudder, different hatches, etc...I like the kayak a lot but it isn't as stable as hoodoo claimed. A lot of people are not liking the gen2 at all. I think it's fine because I've paddled wildly unstable kayaks before. If I ever get a really large fish or get stuck in rough water, I'm going over. You can't stand up in this one. I mean you can, but it is all over the place and unsettling. They changed the design for 2023. Gen2 started shipping in May. I was one of the first ones to get a gen2.
I ordered the 120 several weeks ago, and I’m waiting for the “late June” ship date. My question is, you say it feels like it leans a little easier, do you think the 105 would be more sturdy? It looks to be a little shorter and wider.
You say sturdy, but i think you mean less tippy or stable?
Also, this is the only hoodoo kayak I have ever floated before, so I have no way to tell how unstable it is compared to other hoodoo kayaks. From what I have seen, the older model was a lot more stable, but I don't have any personal experience on the older model tempest.
The new tempest is taller and wider than the old version, so I am not sure being wider is any measure of how stable a kayak is. Hull shape seems to have more influence with that.
@@keithfoco yes, less tippy lol. Thank you! I currently have a 12 ft field and stream shadow caster, it’s very stable and I love it. However, I wanted to get into an affordable pedal drive. Thank you for the information, now I just have to wait for it to show up!!
@@EthanGoodbrod no problem. I used to have a field and stream eagle talon 12 and that was even less stable than the tempest. Didn't have that one long. Give the new tempest a spin and see what you think. I am pretty good with mine so far. Haven't decided if I'm going to keep it or not. It is pretty fast and maneuverable, so that may just be the price you have to pay.
How long did it take to ship after you ordered it?
1 month. Shipping problems in Chinese and u.s. ports causing long delays.
@@keithfoco where did you order from? I ordered off the website and it’s coming from Texas

You will get used to it. I was in it for 5 hours today in some crazy wind and I did great. Didn't even think about after a while.
How do I go about getting the new model all I found are the 2021 ones
Not really 100% sure. I just ordered mine from the hoodoosports website and I got the newer one. I think if you want an old one, you're gonna want to go to a specific store that has them in stock.
I just picked mine up direct. It’s a 2023 model. They said everything they will ship out now is 2023. Differences are, new hatch up front, also the front hatch area does not access the hull. It now has molded in handles on the side. The hull seems deeper. All now have a Beaver Tail rudder. Mine came with the rudder cables swapped to wrong side. Also the latches for the drive are all Super Tight and hard to latch
@@davidknutz3314 I had to swap my rudder cables also. It also seems a bit tippier than the older version.

So how to connect the radio?
ardy ardy You are going to have to search you tube for that. The hawk5 claims it is a "bind and fly". That could not be further from the truth. It is a pre-built kit only. It is essentially ready to connect to your radio. In this case, I wound up using a taranis qx7 that I bought for this drone. It took me a while and a lot of help. It was not easy at all. It is way too involved to even begin to try and describe here. I recommend getting on you tube and searching like crazy. If you have a racing community near you, it would be great to connect with them and get some in-person help. Good luck.
It's a fun drone to fly and fairly quiet. I grab drones with my hand all the time.
I wouldn't land on anybody else. That's ridiculous. My daughter reached out, but it was actually pretty far from her.
I bet you are liking the DJI more! But... do not land it on your daughter's hand... she can probably fly it, but no landings on body parts ;)
Well, I got rid of this kayak a couple months ago because I needed a few bucks. Originally, I wasn't going to replace it, but shortly afterwards I came across the ozark trail pro angler 12 and grabbed one. A little bit different in comparison to the talon in how it's made, it it's a lot more stable and incredibly more comfortable. I picked up the pro angler at Walmart for $400 brand new. Again. More stable, more comfy and less expensive. Is it built better, probably not, but it's great for the money.
you will have to fix those foot rest too, they will break for sure, good idea on the ice chest though, i need to get one now.
tom lucas I removed the foot rests and tracks and velcro'd a couple wood blocks instead. A lot stronger and zero maintenance. I sold the kayak and put the foot rests back on for the new owner.
