Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Review: good enough for Cycling? 🚲🤔
Hey everyone! Today, we're taking a close look at the all-new Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and asking: Is it good enough for cycling?
Design and Specs
The 47mm Galaxy Watch Ultra is a bit bulky but comfortable at 93 grams with a flexible strap. It features a new 3-nanometer Exynos W1000 processor, 32GB of storage, and runs on Wear OS 5.
Screen and Visibility
The super bright 3000-nit display with Sapphire Crystal Glass is easy to read in sunlight and is military-grade certified, making it durable for biking.
Sports & Cycling Features
Waterproof up to 100 meters, it pairs easily with Strava through Samsung Health. While connecting power meters can be tricky, it supports multi-sport activities, ideal for triathlons.
Heart Rate Accuracy
The Ultra significantly improves heart rate accuracy, the best among Wear OS watches.
Battery Life and Charging
The 590 mAh battery lasts about 2.5 days with always-on display activated and charges quickly, reaching 35% in 30 minutes.
Navigation and GPS
The dual-band GPS is reliable and accurate, suitable for most cycling needs.
Final Thoughts
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is a solid cycling companion with great features, battery life, and display. Despite its bulk, it's worth considering over the TicWatch PRO 5.

    All depends on your phone more than anything. You can't use Apple Watch with android & even if you could use this with Apple, nobody will pick this over an Apple Watch Ultra who owns an iPhone. Thanks for the great review. I am still using my trusty Pixel Watch 1 and I was pleasantly surprised to see it is still the top Wear OS device for HR accuracy (well, at least BEFORE this new Samsung). I am probably going to get the Watch 7 (which has almost all the same internals) and was hoping that Samsung finally got their act together, especially in terms of GPS accuracy. Looks like they finally have done that. Do you have any plans to test the 7, as well?

    • @bipr

      The Watch 7 has the same HR sensor so you will get the same results as the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Maybe even better for people with smaller wrists because the watch is smaller and may better fit their wrist! This is a good choice as well. :-)

    What does it mean to have an accuracy of 7%? Is that a good thing? Since it's accuracy per device, shouldn't be "the higher, the better"? Why is it that the closest to 0 is better than closest to 100 (in terms of accuracy, isn't 100% accuracy the best?). I believe I'm misinterpreting the graph

    • @bipr
      @bipr 3 дні тому

      7% means the real value is close to 7% to what the sensor gives you. If you have 0%, this means that the gives you always the exact value. Or 100% correlation gives you an exact value as well. My definition of accuracy in the video : standard deviation divided by the mean of the heart rate values. So lower is better.

    • @paulovlobato
      @paulovlobato 3 дні тому

    How do you know the Strava measurement is necessarily all that much better. Sometimes with these devices I wonder if consistency isn't what really matters. If you use the same device, and it gives you the same results so that you can improve... :-) interesting

    • @bipr
      @bipr 3 дні тому

      The definition of FTP is the maximum power that you can hold for an hour. I agree with this, and I am not sure I could hold 255W for an hour; I think Strava's estimation is probably too high. On the other hand, I know I have never done a 20-minute all-out test, but I was able to hold 240W for 20 minutes. I think at least 240W can be sustained for an hour, but maybe not 255W. Strava takes the whole power curve into account to estimate FTP, gathering data from all your rides. Conversely, Samsung only uses data from the current ride and focuses on the 4-minute power peak. Currently, I am working on FTP estimation based on power-to-HR correlation, but Samsung seems not to use HR data (there was no HR data during the ride). I need to do more tests to better understand how Samsung's FTP estimation works, but I believe it is only based on your 4-minute power peak.If you perform a 4-minute all-out test, you will get an idea of your VO2max power, not your FTP. Even though there are slight differences between individuals, VO2max is often correlated with FTP (if you get fitter, your FTP will increase along with your VO2max). Therefore, it is not unreasonable to estimate FTP based on VO2max. As you suggested, consistency is what is most important. Personally, I don't need to know the exact value of my FTP; I am more interested in how big companies handle this concept. Sorry for the lengthy response!

    What do you think of the new Galaxy Watch Ultra?

    • @GadgetyMV
      @GadgetyMV 3 дні тому

      I appreciate your testing, specially with external sensors. I find the Ultra way too expensive compared to what it brings of extra features compared to the Watch 7 (or the TicWatch Pro); apart from the materials, it's a bigger battery, and the 10 ATM rating, plus the button for workouts. The ATM is a static rating and Samsung one their web site specifically says it's not for diving below 1.5 meters. That's disappointing, compared to Huawei GT4 Pro, Ultimate, Garmin or the Apple Watch Ultra. I had high hopes for the new bioactive sensor and they claim a 30% improvement over the Watch 6 in terms of accuracy in tracking dynamic HR changes, but perhaps it's not enough. It will do other things such as AGEs, and probably more in the future.

    • @bipr

      I was able to do 100km+ rides, so of course it will impact the battery but for a few hours it is fine. Maybe not for ultra endurance rides however... You can turn off GPS in HR2VP on the phone to optimize battery consumption. The screen of the phone needs to be ON, I'm not sure to see what you mean with stand by but if you press the power button to lock the screen once, the screen will be switched off and the app may not work properly. I invite you to try and confirm or not if it works. Concerning the subscription, you can try it for free for 15 minute workouts, in order to see if everything works fine and if so, the subscription is a bit less than 4$ a month. If you prefer to pay only once, the Lifetime is around 35$.

    I have been in a long-running battle with Hammerhead SRAM about my elevation gain results on my Karoo 2. The results have typically been 20-25% higher than Strava's adjusted data, sometimes a lot more even. SRAM has replaced my unit twice, including once within just the last few days. All three of the units report these errors. I see in your video that the Karoo 2 did pretty well. But here in Jackson, WY, my friends with Garmins get data that is very close to Strava's consistently. People with the Karoo 2, not so much. Even people with newer Karoo 2 units, like me. One person I know just got a Karoo 3 and it performs well. Anecdotal and not statistically significant, I know, but it makes me wonder if they have fixed the problem now and can't really claim that all newer Karoo 2 units now yield reasonably good results. Anyway, I am going to sell my Karoo 2 online and get a Garmin. Even better, maybe I will keep both for a while and do my own real-time comparisons.

    Nice work, keep it up! Which additonal tracker do you prefer in general? I see you tested a lot and many tests includes different devices, which is really great yet makes it a little complicated to decide. I got a Xiaomi watch 2 pro and u had a great influence on my decision. :) I want to enhance my sleep tracking, I do outdoor cycling, jump ropes, calisthenics. the list may grow :)

    • @bipr
      @bipr 2 місяці тому

      You may have some issues with built-in optical sensors at high intensity but for sleep tracking, heart rate is low and you don't move a lot, so it is perfectly fine. What I would suggest is to get a good heart rate monitor for sports only, not for everyday life. My favorite one is: amzn.to/4ahXYCC It is rechargeable, accurate, comfortable, with led indicator, so very nice. If you prefer an arm band to a chest strap (a bit less accurate but OK), this one is good as well: amzn.to/44CwPsG Of course you can pick up a Polar or Garmin heart rate monitor, it is accurate as well but a bit more expensive. It is up tu you to decide :-)

    Edge 1030 doesnt work with BLE and HR2VP. I cant try ant, becuase my Note 20 Ultra doesnt support ant+ natively (dissapointing because it seems some note 20s did) but my usb-c port is fubar'd and I cant use a dongle. so its either upgrade my phone, or buy a garmin heart rate monitor I guess. The FCC and FTC should force these companies to get on board with data sharing. this is silly.

    • @bipr
      @bipr 3 місяці тому

      Yes you are not lucky, the note ultra is the only note 20 which is not ANT+ native... There is a new possibility which is not completely official but it should work: join the beta and get the latest beta for HR2VP Watch Bike Computer. Enable ANT+ broadcasting (even if your phone is not ANT+ compatible). A new Service will run in the background and transmit data to the HR2VP Data Field which you need to add to your profile screen on your Garmin GPS. Not sure what I did wrong. I have been using power meters for 20 years and know my HR at most given power outputs. The app doesn’t even get close. And it appears to drop out often do power starts to drop. I can’t get power output past about 120 watts. My ftp is about 235 right now.

    • @bipr
      @bipr 3 місяці тому

      I invite you to check parameters : min heart rate, max heart rate (should be achievable, not theoretical), and set FTP at 235W in the app. If you know yourself, you can fine tune the FTP parameter, it doesn't have to be exactly your FTP. For some people, it is a bit more, other people a bit less... If you want a more stable power out (less sensitive to variations), you can set power values parameter to smooth (or in the middle) instead of accurate. It will be less responsive but more stable. Last suggestion, if you already have a power meter, you can connect it to the app and it will tell you the best parameter to use for the FTP at the end of the workout. This way you can calibrate HR2VP. Another question: which heart rate monitor do you use ? Are you sure it is accurate ?
