Videos about Fine Art Painter and Art Instructor, Rachael McCampbell, teaching in both acrylic and oils. McCampbell teaches instructional art videos and publishes videos about her painting workshops she leads to Europe and US locales. McCampbell is a GOLDEN Acrylic Certified Educator and a Dedicated Gamblin Instructor.
McCampbell makes learning art fun. She is "The Imperfect Painter" because she finds perfectionism stifling to the creative process. She enjoys painting with friends and having fun with art.
"I believe strongly in knowing how to be archival with art materials yet experimentation is key to growth as an artist. I'm a process oriented painter in that I start with a plan but it usually takes on a life of its own and I just follow its lead. My desire is to encourage others to paint and enjoy the beauty and healing qualities of making art!"

Process of a Commissioned Painting
I recently completed a large commissioned painting for a private client in the east TN region of the Smoky Mountains. I had a great time coming up with an idea for this piece to go over their mantle in a new cabin by the river. The ceilings are high so we decided a large piece, 4' x 6' h, would fill the spot nicely. I first drew a black and white sketch that was approved followed by a color mock-up in gouache. Then after all approvals were met, I began on the final piece.
It takes a long time to do commissions for me as I want the client to be happy I will work on something so much that there are often 15 layers of paint. We wanted a happy view of part of their property that feels joyous and celebratory--thus the title: "Little Pigeon River Reverie."
I wanted to share some of the process with you as often folks don't know what goes into painting. I didn't tape myself painting with oil because that part is so slow and tedious, I thought it would bore everyone!
I hope you enjoy this peek into my painting process as a fine artist. Have a creative and blessed day!

We had an open house on October 7, 2023 and I want to share with my subscribers this video so you can generally...

In celebration of over 2,000 subscribers on my UA-cam Channel, I'm raffling off a painting that I did for one of my art instructional videos. This "Reductive Pear," is from a video I did where I showed how to apply GOLDEN OPEN acrylic paints and then remove the paint to create an interesting painting. It's very different to work in a reductive vs. an additive way. If you haven't tried it, you s...

Thank you for sharing. I got to get that fabulous umbrella. I hope I find it. Painting from a photo has become my better half. While on location...Taking a plein air piece and then bringing it inside has become very controversial. Some consider that no longer plein air painting. It is a very nice piece. Wish you well.
Do u ever use uncradled wood panels- if so do you do both sides?
I loved your painting style, I could believe how many times you “re-painted” the picture. I must admit I did wish you left some of the earlier versions, especially the sky. What a lovely location. The music I liked for the first five mins then drove me nuts 😂. I would have preferred the sounds of the water in the creek, but at the end I saw the road behind you so I guess that was why you went with the music. Thanks once again , I have subscribed!
Thanks so much for this video. I'm starting my first painting on marine plywood for a client, and yours is the first video I could find that truly gave the details of good prep to assure it would adhere to the wood. Thank you! *** Does the medium/gesso block any tannins coming through? I am also a furniture artist, and when I'm painting a piece of furniture a light color, I use a stain-blocking primer such as Kilz, to prevent wood tannins which can otherwise surface later as odd tints in random places in the furniture art. Do you never get any tannins coming through over time into your paintings? Much of my furniture art has enough texture and play going on that I don't worry about it, but this particular commission design has some single-color, lighter areas where tannins could cause a problem. And does it have to be liquid medium? If I don't have the liquid, will a regular gloss medium work? Thanks so much.
I have a full woodworking shop and make cradled panels for my artist wife (as well as floating frames in every conceivable shape or species of wood). The Baltic bitch quality is so bad nowadays I have switched to cradled hardboard (formaldehyde free). Do you know if sizing and gesso is necessary, or can I just use STIXX primer then Golden Gesso?
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I've only used pre-gesso'd panels but am about to do my first try from scratch...
Thank you for sharing. I would like to see your reference as you paint. I enjoyed your narrative and the low volume music. You are very talented and generous to share.
Thank you, I'll have to figure out how to share those photos. Maybe on my website...let me get back to you.
Such great step by step instructions and demonstration and topped with the production of a truly beautiful artistic creation
Thank you Lorraine. I really appreciate you saying that!!!!
Hi Rachael. tank you so much for this great tutorial. I see you used Fluid Matte Medium to size the panel, you think I can use PVA Size instead? I use PVA when on Stretched Canvas, but never used it on panels.
Great Video! SO many good ideas. I would also add S hooks and keep in mind that bugs are attracked to very dark clothing, medium shades are better, never black or navy or brown.
와~! 대단히 멋진 작품입니다!
Thank you! 😅
Yes of course- you can draw with pencil and charcoal on a gessoed panel. 😊
thank you for a wonderful demo great detail great instruction my favorite plein air demo.
Thanks John, I really appreciate your kind comment!

Watching from Idaho , I’m a pastel & oil Artist. My daughter & son in law live in Gallatin Tn. I be there visiting for a few weeks during Easter. Would love to visit your studio. Open to the public? Just gorgeous Beautiful barn of Tennessee.. it’s a lovely state … ♥️
thank you @rmc9076! I am open by appointment only in Centerville, TN. I'm not very close to Gallatin....about 1.5 hr. drive. But if you want to come to Centerville, my studio is on an old town square. I'd be happy to show it to you. Yes, TN is lovely. I know you will enjoy your visit!

2:51 Just DON'T add water. In my case I used gesso directly but MADE the huge mistake of adding water to dilute it a bit., it all cracked and looked cool, but wasn't the desired effect I wanted. I have re-gessoed again Without water, hopefully it doesn't crack anymore. I have never used or tried wood panels, first time trying these and found your video after I had alreayd gessoed the panel. Hope I haven't ruined my panel. I will try your method and will buy the Golden Fluid Matte Medium. Thanks for this great information.
Hi there...thank you for your kind note. I don't really add water to gesso, I just use a water moistened brush to smooth things out. Depending on the gesso brand, it can get thick and hard to spread. But since gesso is a water based product (as opposed to oil) you can use a touch of water but you don't want to dilute it or you lose its effectiveness. Thanks so much for watching!
Just found you and I have been struggling with my clouds . This is the best one !❤ you explain so well.
Thank you Mary, that means so much to me! Please subscribe. I'm about to do a raffle for free art to celebrate 4,000 subscribers. And please sign-up for my newsletter for more info. I'll be doing more UA-cam videos this coming month. Happy 2024!

love your commentary so much. its so inspiring
Thank you Kelly. I'm so happy to hear that. I'll be doing more videos in 2024, so stay tuned. Happy new year!
I just received an U.go medium sized pochade box for Christmas! Your video is so practical. Thank you.
Oh good, I hope you enjoy that fantastic gift of a pochade box! Can't wait to see what you paint with it!
I’m going to have to take up your challenge!@@mccampbellartstudio
Do also you carry a microwave with you. Way to much stuff. You're taking the fun out of it. Oh wait you need a kawasaki mule...lol
Hey there. Thanks for commenting. I would much rather present a fully packed plein air kit than not. Everyone who goes out in the field will soon figure out what they need, and what they feel comfortable lugging around. Since I teach plein air workshops, I carry everything but the kitchen sink or microwave as you said. That way I'm not left flat footed when there's an issue and someone has left their stuff in the car. I like to be prepared. But to your point, there are probably lots of videos on plein air equipment and packing in a minimal way--this is not that video. My advice is to take the best and leave the rest. Happy new year to you!

Hey Dawn. I am using the 11 x 14" large box. I hope you enjoy painting plein air...it's so much fun. Brilliant, thank you for explaining so clearly. I loved the painting and your commentary.
Wow, thank you so much for that compliment...it means a lot! Happy 2024!
Wonderful. Embrace the imperfections!
Yes, I feel strongly about that since I'm a recovering perfectionist. :-)
BEAUTIFUL and so relaxing
Thank you, I really appreciate you saying that Randall.
Very useful information. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing, beautiful paintings…❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for saying that!!!! You made my day.
That was badass! I learned what I wanted and enjoyed your awesome art as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, Vincent! I really appreciate that!
I just finished packing for my first Plein Air outing this weekend. I watched many similar YT videos on how to pack to build my list of things to take. Your video verified everything I packed and even reminded me of a couple of items I forgot. Excellent presentation. I subscribed and look forward to more of your videos. Thanks...Mark
Hi there Mark. Thank you so very much for your kind words. I really appreciate that you wrote me to say that. I hope it helps and that you enjoy plein air painting as much as I do. I will be posting more videos soon. I have been traveling to teach a great deal and haven't had time to do more of those but I will. It's fun! Happy painting!
Fantastic! I probably would not use have but some things I hadn’t thought of like trash bags excellent job
Thanks Marilyn. I'm so glad if it helped. Lots of things to consider when painting plein air. 🙂
Great tutorial!!
Thanks, this was super helpful! ❤
Amazing it looks so alive and warm and living . So Glad that I found you by just knowing my girlfriend Sharon Snow and her brother Roy Snow , i will be watching you on the service
Adding gesso is so time consuming. There has to be a much better way in 2023 than spending hours on one board before you start your painting.
You can purchase pre-gessoed panels, papers and canvases. You don't have to go through this at all. I just like to do my own because you know what is beneath your painting and you know it's archival. Plus, you can create the texture or surface that you like to paint on. Some of the pre-gessoed products are very slick and strange to paint on. I also don't trust what it is. They often come from China and who knows what is in the gesso itself. So, I like to do my own for the most part. Better more expensive brands may have better pre-gessoed products. Happy painting!
So helpful. Thanks! I love this: "embrace the imperfections." As someone who is just really starting to get into painting, this is great advice! :)
Oh my gosh, I'm so happy that resonated with you. Yes, that is my daily mantra! The messiness of my life enters my artwork and people with less than perfect lives resonate with my artistic imperfections which is a lovely thing. So important to be exactly who you are and there will always be an audience of people who feel that, and want to own your art because of it too. I find that a blessing. Keep being YOU!
Please I need to know.. After applying white gesso can I use charcoal and pencil to draw portraits? @@mccampbellartstudio

Thank you for watching my video!
finally somebody who know how to explain !!😍
Thank you so much, Patricia. I am so glad you feel that way. And sorry, I'm just now seeing your kind words on UA-cam. Happy 2024!
Ive watched a lot of these plein air gear utubes and this is one of the best. Thanks for the info
Thank you so much, Cindy. I'm blown away by your comment. There are so many videos out there on painting, so I really appreciate that! Stay tuned for more videos soon.
can you speed up your videos
Hey Alec. I have different videos where they are sped up. Since this is an instructional video, I decided to run it mainly in real time for those who want to see the whole process. This is a time lapse video for example: ua-cam.com/video/OXEd0KWNnSw/v-deo.html
And another time lapse here: ua-cam.com/video/xBrXoH0zYF8/v-deo.html
Ms. Rachel, this is without a doubt, my favorite plein air video. I’m just beginning my plein air journey and I find myself constantly drawn back to this video. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, Mike. I appreciate that comment more than you know. I need to do another video. I hope your painting is going well!
This was really helpful! Many thanks!
Do you still use the guerilla painter umbrella with this box? It's been hard to find and has terrible reviews, but I'm looking for something to use with this box.
Hi there, I now use this umbrella by Artwork Essentials. It can extend very high which is nice and is broad. I love it. My only complaint is that if a strong wind comes along, it can pull your entire kit over. So I tied a rope to it and attached it in a way that it cannot do that. And if it's windy, I make sure and weigh down my tripod with rocks hanging from a bag on a hook. Here's the link to it. Hope that helps: www.artworkessentials.com/products/umk-45/umk45.htm
También hay que llevar la mesa?
No, I don't carry a table. I just had that for the video to make it easy to show what I had in my backpack.
I paint myself. Your painting, is better than the photo
Thank you so much, Sharon. You could take a photo of a coffee mug on a table and it would be okay looking but then, you paint it, and suddenly the coffee mug takes on a whole new life. It goes from ordinary to extraordinary with paint. And that is why I like to paint. Why do you like to paint?🤩
I was drawing on newspaper before i could write. The art lives in me. I see things a photo don't show. I am the creative type. I make jewlery, crotchet, don't use directions. Many more things i do. Lots. You do nice work yourself
@@sharonyarnell8263 So glad to hear that....being creative is a lifestyle. If you are creative, I don't think you can ever turn that channel off....it's YOU! Awesome.
Wonderful. Almost carving the pear out on the canvas!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate your supportive comment Geoff.
