Back when a regular guy could afford a race car
Doug and Jean Sanders
That was good old Days
That's a movement away way to go jean sanders
Was that doug sanders in the forty two call
Mike really did look like a caveman with that beard. Fly high F1 RIP
I’m glad I grew up in the era where I got to watch all these legends race in person. RIP to all the guys no longer with us and to all the famous 1/2 mile tracks that have been butchered for this new era of racing.
Im wondering why these guys took on various mile tracks like Springfield Illinois and todays version does not.
strange how the wood carvings we made of race cars in early 70s became this right here lol. im glad they waited until the 70s Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds lost their appeal that drew me to the dirt and pavement tracks in 70s became boxes before the switch.
That Custom Chassis car has a sprint car open tube diff with adapters for wide 5 wheels. Was pretty trick for it's time.
My grandpa had one.
Seen Simmons back in the day haul up to Hagerstown for big shows n always b a threat
I liked watching garon miller race back then best i ever seen!!
This small race has more fans in attendance than any current NASCAR race. lol
Thank you so much..really enjoyed this
Went to Carolina Speedway once in my life in 2003. It reminded me of a semi banked red clay version of my home track at that time - East Windsor, NJ.
ahh one of my old videos............nice to see it up on youtube
What great family and friend missed on earth but will see again with our godly father forever
And Freddy! Great Dude!
And Preston was already gone and Stick too at that year point. Was Dale Jr. in it? Billy Bishop; Carl Smart, etc..
Was that Duvall in the yellow car?
Love this older video of the late models. They looked wild back then. Thanks for sharing this!
No
Someone adjust the tracking lol😂
Yes this is cool. Lots of history at this place. Not your typical dirt track. It races like an asphalt track, and that turn three bridge was pretty sketchy!
Awesome thank you for posting this 🏁
Great footage
Freddy Smith was the man 🏁
I liked how the late models looked back then now they look like the rear end is going to flip the car over
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!...I was 8 or 9 and still remember my dad telling me "Watch the triple nickle!" or 'The Flintstone flyer" But MOST of ALL the MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND TOM USRY!!!!!!!!!! Why is he not spoken about anymore? He deserves so much attention. From Dirt to Asphalt..He was one of the most awesome people to grace Fayetteville speedway..Sorry, at that time- "The New Fayetteville speedway"...From his wild ride in Arca@ Daytone(Check that out),Flipping end over end to racing late models against Bobby Labonte and Dennis Setzer at Caraway this man was The definition of the working mans racecar driver.....Someone should do a story on his Career...
I still have a Mike Duvall shirt from when his wedge car still looks like a Camaro
Buck Simmons was one of the best there ever was. Been to Cherokee many times. These are still my favorite late models. Thanks a bunch for sharing.
Sorry but never understood the visual appeal of wedge cars. Sure they were fast, but god they were ugly.
Aerodynamics plus the body sheet metal was easier to replace or straighten out ( flat panels ). Alot of beating and banging going on out there. Most of the drivers and crew worked full time jobs and had limited time to prepare their cars and travel to race on the weekends. Plus the cost was cheaper.
@@BryanClark-gk6ieI get and understand all that. They were still fugly as hell.
@@SLMdirtfan they are just as ugly today, you weren't there so you never experienced the awesomeness of these beast.
Just seeing Grassy working on Jeff's car was worth the whole video. Thanks for sharing
This brings back so many good memories from younger years. The best era and best looking cars period!!
this track is , or was, way too flat and too narrow !
Whoever that cameraman was he didn't know how to use it his shots were only on a few cars I knew a lot of them drivers but Harley saw their car
Who is driving the 41 car
Buck Simmons
Been a dirt fan long? Only won 1012 races in 2005.
Wish I was there to see these awsome footage
Ahhhh the good ol days, why they ever changed from 1/2 mile is the question still asked today
They ruined that place.
Yep they ruined it long before they shortened it too. In the 70s it was banked like Tazewell then they cut it down in the early 80s and then ruined it for good in 2006.
I loved the wedge cars. We ran late model from 82ta92 with 3 track Championships and many features. These cars were insane fast I loved working on them Charlie Swartz and CJ Rayburn had some fast ass rides at Eldora.🤙🇺🇸🇺🇸🏁🤙👍
What a mistake to change this track!! I grew up going there every Saturday night. My dad had a #27 street stock car driven by David Green.
Back in the day I thought these things were so fast.. Today 604 crate blow the track records away.
Well being it’s now a smaller track what would you expect?
@@smurphy1977 Not just here. At all track.
@@Rambone72 604’s aren’t beating any track records.. todays SLM’s are still much faster
@@smurphy1977 I think he's meaning 604s are beating the records these cars made back in the day.
@@SLMdirtfan Well, he's wrong if that's what he's saying. The wedge cars, like you see here were the fastest dirt late models ever. And Gaffney today is NOT the same track it was then. Back then it was a half mile around the bottom, which of course means it was really > 1/2 mile around the racing line. Today's Gaffney is much shorter, maybe 3/8 at best. So, the lap times may be "lower" but they are not faster and in reality aren't even as fast.
That race had all the stars from the 70s and 80s in it. Freddy Smith and Mike Duvall had battles at cherokee speedway for 20 years.
Bud lunsford second o. The inside
Saw Larry Moore's 14 too
I used to think that these cars looked so stupid until I saw what the dirt late models of today look like. Now those look stupid!
What a thing of beauty.
Does anyone have any videos from Lancaster motor speedway 1986 or older
The great Wally Fowler in no.4
Loved this era. So much great racing we watched at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock Ga. Still a huge fan of dirt racing and Super Lap Models. Fondly remembering the late Mike Swims and a bygone era.
Loy Allen in the 21 car.
They were just following each other
