Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.
Welcome to the Pipes Hikes channel, mainly featuring hikes done by me, Anthony Pipes. The majority of my hikes are done in the Peak District, often with my mum.
There's a link in the description of all my videos to a map, on the OS Maps website should you want to try the route out for yourself. You can also find my routes on my Facebook page called Peak District Routes, search on Facebook for @PDRoutes
You can also now follow me on Instagram, search for pipes.hikes and/or on Strava, search for Anthony Pipes.
Videos of my walks are available for all to view, though they were initially meant for mum and I to remember our outings. If you have tuned in I guess you are likely a walker yourself, so hopefully you will enjoy and maybe be inspired to tempt some of the routes.
Happy hiking!

The National Three Peak Challenge
Переглядів 1723 місяці тому
This idea started while discussing it one evening during a game of skittles in 2019. Plans then got underway to take on the National Three Peaks in May 2020. Of course, back then a little virus unfortunately took to the airwaves and the following lockdown put a halt to the proceedings. For some reason, it took us 4 years to get the idea in motion again. But thanks to some pushing from Adam, and...

Bertie Visits... Scafell Pike
Переглядів 1795 місяців тому
I had thought about visiting Scafell Pike alone to recce the route prior to our Three Peak Challenge in a couple of months but when telling Bertie about it, he suggested that he'd like to give it a go with me. Given his Snowdon success last October, I thought why not. So we set off from home on the Friday night after booking a room in Gosforth, spent the night there for an early start. We arriv...

A Frozen Kinder Downfall Wander

A trip out in the snow to have a little explore round Kinder Scout in the snow. Starting at Bowden Bridge on the outskirts of Hayfield it was a tough trudge up in the snowy conditions. Snowy, with a chilly wind but clear skies and sunshine made for a stunning day. Kinder downfall all frozen up was quite a spectacle. A trip to the Ladybower area, parking at Fairholmes Car Park which is just a couple of minutes walk from the mightily impressive Derwent Dam. A spectacular sight and sound when it is overflowing, which it was on this January day. From the dam, I headed up Hollin Clough and in the direction of Lost Lad, a peak that offers great views. A short walk then on to Back Tor, the highest point of the wa...

Todays walk started and ended at the Monsal Head Car Park. Great views from the little picnic spot at the car park itself. Then it was a short walk to Monsal Head itself. I chose to take on this walk anti-clockwise so it placed me in Bakewell for lunchtime. So from Monsal Head, I headed down to Monsal Weir and subsequently through Monsal Dale, a pretty little start to the walk. A steep incline ...
A Few Fine Dales and Peter's Stone

Todays walk saw me parking up in Tideswell Dale Car Park and setting off on a 20 km walk through many dales. Firstly Millers Dale, followed by Monks Dale, Peter Dale and Hay Dale. I then headed through Wheston and Tideswell where I took a moment to visit the village chippy for lunch. I then headed in the direction of Litton before returning to the dales with Cressbrook Dale, Water-cum-Jolly Dal...

Welcome to another long distance trail, this time I take on the 96 mile West Highland Way. This trek travels between Milngavie, near to Glasgow and Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland. My journey happened between the 2nd and 6th June 2023. I had nothing booked before travel so carried all my gear, booking the camp sites I used on the same day. Just finished watching this series of videos. Great stuff. Very useful, as I've just started picking off stages of the Offa's Dyke path as day hikes
will go to the Devil's staircase tomorrow to see how it feels. I am mentally (and physically :) ) preparing for WHW for the next year :)
Another great video Anthony and well done to you all for raising so much money for a very worthy cause.
🤝😎🙌
Well done to you and your friends, Anthony. Those drone shots of the Roman forts are amazing. Absolutely incredible. Such history. Glad the weather (mostly) held up. I'm doing the Cumbria Way next August so fingers crossed the weather holds up for me. 😅
@@dancleasby151 thank you. Yes we just about got away with the weather, could’ve been much worse. I had planned to do the Cumbria Way earlier this year but was too busy with work unfortunately and then got asked to join the team for this. I may go for it next year but nothing set in stone yet.
@dancleasby151 best of luck for it though and yes, fingers crossed for the weather
This is not outdoor related
Very well done to the 4 of you. A valiant cause and pleased you've already exceeded your target. Think I need to get organised and walk the most interesting bits in the hills, etc.
@@jerrygale1994 thank you. The middle section between Lanercost and Heddon-on-the-Wall is well worth two or three day visit 👍🏼
Bet not many kids Bertie's age go walking with their dad these days.
This one was a few years ago now. It's getting ever harder to drag him away from games consoles but we still get out on a few.
@@pipes-hikes Keep trying!
Hi, just a quick question, Id like to try the route where you walked along the a57, did you turn right after crossing the bridge and joining the road? or turn left? as the video seems as though you turned left before you found the hill that leads up to crook hill, cheers
There is an even better gulley scramble along this route. Approx 1.5km beyond Golden Clough at the junction of Grinds Brook with a small tributary on the right, follow this tributary upwards which leads you through boulders, across a small pool and a short scramble at the head of the pool. It is possible to bypass this on either side of the gulley. Great fun though after rain. It is also unspoiled ie”improved” and much quieter, in 27yrs I have yet to meet anyone else on this section.
@@keithtanner2806 ah yes I am fairly certain I know where you mean. I haven’t been up there but will certainly have a look at some point. Thanks 👍🏼
One of my favourite hikes this, such a stunner……….great vid btw, makes me want to get up there again.
@@LarrySlazenger7 don’t get me wrong there’s plenty of nice hikes in the Peak District but this one is hard to beat in my opinion.
@@pipes-hikes I agree
Thank you for taking us with you on your WHW-Adventure.
Sir you yourself made this extraordinary challenge look quite easy. You must be quite fit and trained well sir to do this.
1:02:14 The fridge was there when I did it a couple weeks ago! I guess they brought it back since. Definitely in major disrepair though - there's a combine harvester nearby that's just sitting there abandoned mid-harvest
@@mintymilkk Ah glad to hear the fridge is back. It came on very handy on my first crossing on a hot draining day. I guess not so necessary after Church Holme opened up their tuck shop a few miles prior but still nice to know it’s back. The area had become quite a dump when I did the 2022 crossing too, sounds like that’s pretty much the same.
Excellent series of videos thanks for all the time and trouble you took to record them. What approximately was the weight you were carrying in your rucksack? Best wishes Ian
@@ianharris3933 I chose not to use luggage transfer services so carried everything. It was about 11.5kg if you include the rucksack itself and the 2L of water I started each day with. My drone at the time weighed 1.5kg which didn’t help and camera was 700g. Contents of my pack can be found here lighterpack.com/r/n63shf
@@pipes-hikes Thanks so much for your helpful reply. I start out from Montgomery on Tuesday so have found the videos really informative especially the canal option you mention. Im camping 3 nights where b and b accommodation is not so available. Enjoy your walks. Best wishes Ian
@@ianharris3933 ah brilliant. Best of luck with it, hope the weather is good for you 🥾🥾
awesum job mate massive thumbs up.
Thanks Andrew. Tough challenge, said at the time never again… but on reflection, I’d have another crack.
Great vid, congratulations😁👍
Thanks Stevie. Hard to get a quality video on such a tough challenge when time is against you 😂
Great video Anthony and well done to all. Such a tough challenge, so pleased that you completed it within the 24 hours, amazing xx
I believe about 14 mins in youd have past some static caravans before heading over the fields to the motor ways. We started from my step dads caravan today and walked 6 hours to Prestatyn. It was tough going but we did it!
Brilliant video. Well done Bertie. you are amazing x
Great video again Anthony x
Very nice, where is the best place to park and how far would you need to walk from car to starting point of treck thanks

Thank you for a fantastic video of one of my favourite places. The skyline route as been on my to do list longer than I like.
@@IanC_42 no problem. It’s a great walk, enjoy if/when you go for it 👍🏼
Classic walk...been itching to do this for a while now
@@atrampinthehills.841 well worth a visit. Enjoy if/when you go for it 👍🏼
Good going little man. A true adventurer in the making
Your son is hilarious, it’s good you get him out doing this when most kids are sitting at home his age playing mindcraft. Some good training for your upcoming 3 peaks. I have a picture of my granddad leaning against that round stone circle things from 1934, I’m still get to go up scafell pike.
Don’t be fooled, he would rather be on the computer games and spends too much time on them, but he does enjoy getting out sometimes so can’t fault that. Given your Insta comment, have you now made it up to the top?
@@pipes-hikes yeah I made it, still feeling it today Monday, it’s a tough old hike up to the top, and as mentioned saw lots of little lights heading up from Wasdale. I think watching your video here gave me the inspiration to do the camp, I just got the dji mini 3 pro and put some reels together. I’ll sponsor your page soon. It will be a great experience doing the 3 peaks.
We had a nice circular walk from Bakewell which ended up at Magpie mine. It included the incline at 4:15. It was in the wet and it nearly finished us off.
Well done Bertie! Hope your dad bought you another bag of jelly babies.... essential food for every hiker 😂
Haha we always have a pack at the ready 👌🏼
Excellent video! Looks like a nice route up. I’ll be doing this for the first time next year so will definitely consider your route!
Thanks David. I’ve been up twice now, the first time I went up from Seathwaite and did a loop that takes in the corridor route. Personally I prefer that route. It’s not so steep but that’s because it’s almost twice as far, but I personally think the views are better… providing you get the weather of course. Enjoy whichever route you take 👍🏼
At 8.28 on your video before decending down on your right, there is the farm made tea rooms for refreshments, not open every day and usually closed around 15.30...
Ah I didn’t realise that. There were no signs out though so wonder if it may have been closed that day. Thanks for the info though 👍🏼
Wonderful scenes here
Cheers Dave. Hope you’re well mate.
@@pipes-hikes I’m ok mate, you doing a walk this summer?
Somehow missed you posting this, Anthony. Good little walk! Hope the arthritis clears up and you feel better and your plans come to fruition this summer. I'm hoping to do the Cumbria Way next summer (going north to south) so fingers crossed I'll get it booked soon. Take care.
Thanks Dan. I’ve had to put the Cumbria away on hold as too busy with work and have plenty of other plans. Arthritis still lingering but seems to have eased a little for now 🤞🏼
Awesome 🤩
Full vid coming soon
We just finished our WHW journey yesterday in eight days. Amazing that you did from near Bridge of Orchy to Glen Nevis in one go. That's insane to me. Well done... I hit my limit at about 15 miles.
thanks for fantastic scenery. topography and geography of great britain is very special...
Great to see u out and about again. Hope the arthritis does one and you get to fully enjoy your summer plans
Yes I’m hoping so. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼
another great video mate nice to see ya out again.
Thank you Andrew 👍🏼
Cracking walk...a Peak district classic
Yeah it sure is. I've been several times and it never fails to impress.
I really enjoyed this video and I will be checking out more of your content in the future. thanks for the informative video ! :)
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it. It's a beautiful area to walk in.
Lovely to see this. We did it in 2023 but the other way round. We ascended High Wheeldon the same side as yourself but descended on the Western side , which turned out to be ridiculously steep and required semi sliding down a section near the base as my 6 feet 2 inch height produces too high a centre of gravity to do otherwise. It was pretty hard on the knees! Great walk though, and fantastic views. I love the contrast between the landscapes of the White Peak and the Dark Peak. I wonder if Wolfscote Hill is accessible now? I thought the views from that were particularly beautiful and wouldn’t mind a revisit - Wolfscote Dale is one of my favourite dales!
I did this walk in 2019 (same way round as this time) and I climbed up the western side that time so trust me, I know just how steep it is 🤣It about broke me... hence me going around it this time haha. But yes I agree, the views are awesome. Not sure on Wolfscote Hill I'm afraid, I think I read it was still shut until a path is sorted but not 100% on that. I don't think I've ever actually been to that trig. I have been through Wolfscote Dale but not for a good few years so I too am probably due a revisit.
It's a very beautiful places
Sir are you doing another long walk this summer
Hello there. Yes I have a few plans here and there. Possibly the Cumbria Way but that’s not certain yet. I’m doing the National Three Peak Challenge late summer with some friends so will attempt to record that and then been asked to join a group walking Hadrians Wall so that will likely be filmed too.
@@pipes-hikes excellent sir
The journey began at Bowden Bridge in Hayfield, facing snowy weather and chilly winds, but the clear skies and sunshine made for a stunning day. Have a fantastic day🎉 💖TFS
Nice sound.
What kind of walking stick do you recommend
What a nice intro music... it blew me of my chair
Amazing! I assume you climbed in May? I'm surprised that it's just you in the CMD route at that hour.. Do you think it's feasible for a first time on Ben Nevis? and especially when not lots of people around?
Hi Sarra, it was 17th June last year. I saw nobody else on the CMD arête. If you are confident in navigating, have done plenty of hill/mountain walks and don’t have a fear of heights/ridge walking, then no reason why you couldn’t undertake it in my opinion. Certainly more peaceful than the tourist path will be. Obviously I have no idea of your experience in the mountains. I had great weather in the week I was in Scotland, it’s not all that often that the weather is that kind up there, more often than not there is cloud and wind (or worse) to contend with. Plan wisely x
What a fantastic film of your WHW journey. Absolutely brilliant photography, filming and commentary, I really enjoyed your film it was so clear the filming was stunning. Well done on your mileage per day, it’s double what I can do. I will be walking the WHW solo and camping towards the end of May this year 2024, my first long distance hike, you’re film certainly helped me with my planning and research, thank you, well done and all the best, take care. 🍻👍👍👍
Thank you for the comment. I’m no pro, but do enjoy making the films so always pleasing to receive positive feedback. Best of luck with the trail. It can be tough if you’re carrying all your kit so keep the pack as light as possible and take plenty of rest stops to give your shoulders a break. Hope you enjoy it, there’s some great scenery along the way, certainly in the second half of it ⛰️
