    I was just thinking about you the other day and was curious as to how your plants was doing after the storm.....as you know I have two greenhouses, one is 10'x10'x7' the other is 17'x14'x10', luckily I have good heaters or I'd of had pots full of green slime. I noticed today my brassavola nodosa(lady of the night orchid) is about to open a flower and I can't wait, the fragrance is to die for!!!! My huge(30 gal pot) and very rare milky way tree, tabernaemontana littoralis(formerly stemmadenia) should flower like mad and perfume my entire yard this year. it's not fragrant but I've also got a huge Brazilian red cloak(25 gal pot) that's in flower right now, I've also got an avacado ready to flower, my artabotrys hexapetalus is growing like mad and should bloom for the first time this summer, my night blooming jasmine is still flowering....I have a couple of alocasias that are getting ready to flower and at night they are fragrant and smell like tropical fruit salad

      Soo much excitement!! Send me some pictures when they bloom, would love to see them. Yeah, this year winter is not bad at all in Texas but this summer or fall I definitely need to get a heater or two in there. The terracotta heat thing I made worked but comes at the cost of possible plant deaths-defeat the purpose. I actually had brassavola nodosa long ago back in kansas, the fragrance is very nice. I am looking into this Milkway tree right now, lol.

    Happy new year Alex. Thank you for update. Here in Jersey I’ve brought plants into basement where boiler is. Here resides four night jasmine and a tea jasmine maid of Orleans. All are doing great with plant light in timer. Not sure if done properly but trimmed the night jasmine recently because they’re vigorous growers and brought down to main trunk to promote strength of plant and get ready for vigorous summer growth. If you have thoughts please share. Many thanks.

  • @gizmohawaii
    @gizmohawaii 18 днів тому

    Aloha, do you prune the tree ? If so, how often ? I took cuttings off of my neighbors tree, and I stuck them in potting soil, and only one took root.

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 18 днів тому

      Yes, I do prune time to time to keep it under control since this is in a container. The propagation is best using air layering but since is your neighbor’s tree cutting probably be the best way to go. It is hard to get this tree’s cutting to root so you are doing well.

    Do you have any thoughts on purchasing a "yellow Magnolia champaca" vs a "white Magnolia × alba"? I heard the yellow variety might be able to take a light frost a bit better, but was curious if you had information from growing the white variety for a few years.

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 Місяць тому

      Yellow one does have better cold tolerance and can form seed for germination. However, the fragrance from the yellow is not as strong as white one. More people like the growth of yellow one due to its more sturdy than white one. I personally like the contrast of white flower with green leaves in the background.

      Nick you can one video I did on air layering white champaca in texas. The weather plays a big part in This and I could never gotten it to work in kansas. I successfully air layered in Texas but during repotting into the container and forgot to water it week in: killed it. For putting moss i there make sure use alot of moss BUT squeeze out the water: moist not wet is what you want.

      If it has out grown the pot then repot be a good idea. But even if outgrown in pot it should still blooms since white champaca is not picky. Without seeing it kind of hard to suggest. Here are few things to keep in mind: white champaca loves acidic mix, partial to full sun but not scorching sun, temperature 55-80ish, and balance fertilizer.

    I’m in SF Bay Area (California), 10a. My 15+yo M alba in a 1/2 barrel sized double-hull container gets large almost 5” flowers but the fragrance is normally not very strong (mild weather) but on heat wave days (80s & 90s F), in those evenings the scent is strong and wafting in the air... more noticeable this Summer than others young leaves at the tree top facing the sun got severe sunburn from a weeklong heatwave and now my lush green tree w/a profusion of blooms almost all year round looks raggedy w/nearly bare top branches. Over the years I have noticed sudden changes in temps and weather can severely affect it, both positive (fragrance) and negative (leaf sunburn). Mine is so used to mild weather that any extremes can make it rather melodramatic…not as bad as my potted citruses in the area of melodrama tho. 😅

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 2 місяці тому

      I think humidity level also a factor for the fragrance. High heat will require lot of watering for container white champaca. I remember there are few in my home town in china that can take extreme sun without being scorched because they are in ground. You in zone 10a should be able to plant it in ground, I love to plant mine but I am in zone 8a.

      So the idea behind planting this in ground in texas is to see if it will survive and regrow next season. In this case, I planted last year and it did survived and regrow:however, at a hefty cost of dying down to the ground. So the conclusion for this plant in ground in texas is doable but not as good.

    I got one in a 5 gallon pot in spring and it's doing very well. Not as big as yours but I will be putting in the ground this fall too. It bloomed shortly after I got it and it was so fragrant. It is putting out alot of new growth and flower buds for me now in Austin area. Love this pant! Thanks for your updates.

    • @ninelinks3443

      I think so, I know southeast Asia temperatures are very mild and good humidity. As long as the temperature above 45F, osmanthus fragrans will survive.

      @@TaLeng2023 safe bet, plant it near a shade or a partial shade area. Out of 6 sweet olives I planted around my house I can tell the ones in partial shade really grows better compared to those in full sun. The ones in the partial shade leaves are better in color and texture, then the one in the full sun is tough and scorched.

    Thanks Alex. Best luck to your experiment. Surprised you’re not using soil with rooting hormone, too dry or difficult for new growth to develop ? Gives me an itch to bring my perfume tree outside, though it’s clean of any insects/pest now is inside the house.

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 6 місяців тому

      Yeah went ahead and do it since we got about three more months of warm weather and a greenhouse. Thought about using some potting mix but heat in texas dries them up very fast and new cuttings cant take even tiniest stress. As for bugs, if out side there will be bugs for sure. If you look careful enough on my chinese perfume tree there are tons of dead scales on there when I bought it. Almost entire plant is covered in scales, it didn’t bother me much since those are dead. If, big if, all these cuttings rooted then next year chinese perfume tree around the house. Lol.

    Hi Alex. The night jasmine I purchased from Amazon (daylily) is growing nicely. Took a couple days to establish in pot and now is growing quite rapidly. Though it won’t be as strong as established four or five year old plant, seems to be a good specimen.

      Great to hear! Night blooming jasmine will grow very fast just make sure you have a big container ready. Yeah, I do not think the rabbits will like my night blooming jasmine but there are about 6-9 rabbits coming through back yard and each take a small bite not good for my young regrown night blooming. Oh well, at least I know my plant is still alive.

      @@ninelinks3443 btw the original plant I had purchased 2 years ago which I pruned back til almost stump only had push out many shoots also and growing vigorously. Will wait until first frost up north here, to compare original to specimens from daylily. I’m suspecting newer plants will be better plants. I might also be wrong that this species are known to be leggy meaning (?) lower leaves are prone to drop off once developed -though don’t have a full season growing these. Live and learn !!

    Hi Alex. Looking forward for video one day to propagating, wait til the little guy is ready. Got mines from Logee’s two years ago and experienced a sizable leaf drop when first came in, but has adjusted to indoors and though grows slowly is doing well with occasional new branching. Thoughts on fertilizing regiment ? Also do you use bone meal and mustard cake fertilizer ?

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 6 місяців тому

      I only used rice water and banana water early spring in terms of organic fertilizer. Currently I have Osmocote pink slow release fertilizer for all my plants as foundation fertilizer then I feed the plants supplement fertilizer depending on what they need. For example, chinese perfume tree is flowering now so I used bit of bloom booster once every other week on top of existing Osmocote. I used nitrogen rich fertilizer for neem tree since it needs to grow bigger first. I think foundation fertilizer is important for over all plant health then the supplement fertilizer to give that little push into the direction you want.

      Thank you Alex. I get a lot of leaf yellowing on my night jasmine so have started a weekly fertilizing regiment on the original plant with Miracid. Also have pruned my original plant massively a month ago because it’s too “leggy” which seems to be prone to. The second plant which is propagation from the original grows quite vigorously but still yellows but has tamed down from also from Miracid (miracle gro) weekly treatment. Also Amazoned two new night jasmines, just to be sure my original wasn’t a bad specimen that was purchased from a florist in NYC. I’m determined to make this trial work or at least know I’ve given my best effort -and especially in the colder climate of the north-east nyc area. Also with the perfume plant as mentioned on this video.

    Hi buddy..i bought oramge jasmine.. when i bought there were 2-3 flowers and lots of red colour fruits and many buds (or may be remaining of flowers) ...i was not sure..i removed all the small buds thinking they have flowered, because in every small small buds there were many red fruits....did i do wrong? Will there be bloom again? I am really sad. ..

    • @gator232

      The fruits have seeds in them. Remove the pulp, clean and plant them right away. They germinate quickly.

    • @ninelinks3443
      @ninelinks3443 7 місяців тому

      The flower buds tend to be very small like pencil tip size. Anything bigger than that like is the fruit. The fruit/seed size generally be around small tv button and have color range from green to orange to red. Is normal to see multiple blooms crisscrossed into each other. You are fine nothing is wrong except you get little less flowering for now.

    • @ninelinks3443

      If I have choice I be moving a cutting from this one late summer to grow in a pot. The benefits of planting it in ground outside are follow: the plant will die back to ground every winter which saves you the pruning and control its growth, since this plant flowering requirements are not picky it will flower regardless, and finally the sap and berry from this plant are poisonous/skin irritant(keep it out door winter). Lastly: this plant grows fast so recovers fast too. I am pretty sure by mid july I will see at least 10 branches.
