Rail Spike Productions is the home of unique railroad videography, primarily from around the Northeastern USA but with many other various locations included. My name is Nate and I do my best to find and document tons of interesting and unusual trains that are not seen by many others. I am normally able to post new videos 2 or 3 times each week. All content posted on this channel belongs to me and may not be used without my consent. My photography can be viewed on Instagram on @rail_spike_productions, which is linked below. I hope you enjoy my content as much as I enjoy making it.
The Aftermath of a Train vs. Car Collision in Beverly, MA - Driver Flees Scene, Leaves License Plate

About this video: On September 26, 2024, MBTA Newburyport Line inbound 158 (led by CTC-5 1809 and powered by GP40MC-3 1129) came into contact with a car at the western railroad crossing on Cabot Street in Beverly, MA (the collision is not pictured in this video). The driver was surprisingly able to flee the scene before initial law enforcement showed up, but the front bumper of the vehicle (including the license plate) was detached after the impact making for quite the simple police investigation. The train involved in the incident had to be taken out of service after this occurrence and as a result was moved off of the mainline (so regular traffic could resume) and into one of the 2 tracks in the Beverly Yard, which is located adjacent to the northern end of McPherson Drive. Passengers onboard 158 were picked up and taken south towards their destinations by the next Newburyport Line inbound (160) about an hour after the collision. Later in the evening, a yard crew based out of the Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility (Boston Engine Terminal) in Somerville took the north side work train’s power (GP40MC-3 1137) out to Beverly to tow the disabled set back to Boston. I filmed the lite locomotive move passing the Beverly Depot station and arriving into the Beverly yard, in addition to the full rescued consist heading back towards Boston once again at Beverly Depot.

I question why Railroad does does not apply the four quadrant gate system like most European railways but then again not very many cities can afford things like that anymore. It’s hard when a locomotive just fresh out of rebuild comes back online only to be damaged yet again. Just like Amtrak 161 in Washington several weeks ago. That unit was a total loss and instead of repainting another P 42, Amtrak decided to paint a freight locomotive into 161 colors heritage unit.

2:16 Didn't expect the horn to actually sound good after a modern rebuild! Was fully expecting a raised letter K5LA instead.
How do you find out where 1129 is all the time is there a way to track it?
When it’s on revenue trains, the best way to find it is just to keep track of the cab car that it’s paired with since those can be tracked on public maps. On non-revenue moves, I have to rely on some friends at the railroad to assist me with figuring out where it’s off to next
Do the MBTA locomotives have front facing video cams? If so, the driver is toast. Failure to obey a traffic control device, leaving the scene of an accident for starters.
The train was in push mode, meaning the locomotive was at the back of the train.
@@IowaGrandpaTrain all MBTA locomotives and cab cars (except for very few older pieces of equipment) have inward and outward facing cameras. The last few pieces of equipment that do not have these cameras will most likely receive them later this year
Nice video it's not okay for a driver in the car beating the train it's really dangerous
Very true - thanks for watching

Nice Captures
Thank you
Jolie video bien filmee. Merci.
I’m very glad you enjoyed - thank you
IT's never that easy and trains don't break down next to crossovers but nice try. Usually dispatchers get involved and conductors just sit back and laugh and foillow directioins which add hours onto simple moves.
Get well soon all the victims
way too many grade crossings just even in your field of view filming, that's ridiculous. every other street crosses the tracks
Well I'm used to it.. it's part of what happens when you railfan on the rockport and Newbury port line
i was not happy
Yeah they did a good job keeping 1129 away from you
What s idiot.
Nothing could take to be even close to a better shot than that at 6:45. Awesome seeing 1127 and 1134 both together most likely for the last time with their original bells. What could be a better pose than that, absolutely nothing.
0:03, Haha, a boy riding a horse seen crossing the tracks. Don’t see that ever while you’re out there filming trains. 😂 What a surprise to see. Lol. 😆😅
6:45, Wow, look at that, the last two Geeps remaining with their original bells next to each other together just chilling at Rockport. Awesome shot right there. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Was a pleasure to see! Glad you like it
I hope weluck has this vidio
It couldn’t have been an hsp. It had to be one of my favorite locomotives in the fleet, a GP40MC to be involved in a car and train collision. And to top it all off, it had to be freshly rebuilt 1129, MBTA’S VERY FIRST HERITAGE UNIT. The first time a rebuilt GP40MC-3 has been in a collision with a car and the first HERITAGE UNIT also. It just entered service like two days before from rebuild in Rochester and I’m so happy it was trailing so it didn’t get struck by the car and suffer from a big nasty dent on its nose or damage to the front cab area and have big cracked glass windows. If it was that, I would’ve been very very upset.
As a resident of this city.. i think I probably overheard the horn..
Out of all engines it had to be 1129
crazy
Let's hope those masterbuilders can make these things continue hauling PURE 🍑
Those trains look awesome!! Thanks for sharing and nice trainspotting.
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed !
The truck was weird enough, but that jet, man he was flying very low.
Wow, those three coaches, 855, 875 and 878 were all in testing on the Newburyport/Rockport Line in May 2024. So they’ve just entered service in this video, since it’s from the summer of 2024. BRAND SPANKING NEW AND SO CLEAN AND FRESH. 🤩👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 The control coach on the North Side New Rotem Test Train was 1859. Also, 1856 was also BRAND NEW, entering service on April 30, 2024.
PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES....
Cool video love it
Awesome
Thanks !
Nice to see all the railroad crossings in my hometown
I’ve been there before I’m pretty sure that San Diego harbor island
Nice Catch!
Thank you !
"car collides with train"...no its "car ran gates and ignored warning lights/signs. Nature took its course and the engine was lucky to not have been damaged"
Awesome catch ! 👍
Excellent footage 👍
Thanks very much!

The car was able to flee the scene before law enforcement was able to catch him. Police should’ve got here as quickly as possible to be able to catch the guy before he drove off and thinking in his mind that nothing ever happened.
Well this was quite the interesting railfanning day, man. Never thought you’d run into this while out there filming trains like you love to do to keep all of us rail fans entertained like you do always and best with all these great videos of trains uploaded on your channel.
Was a surprising experience for me as well. I am currently editing a longer video surrounding this incident that I hope to get posted on Monday. Thanks for the kind words
People just don’t learn shit these days. They think they can commit a serious crime and not get caught by the police and get away with it, not even being charged or pleased guilty. I thought this just happened, but it was back in September last year, so my mistake. You are just getting through your September videos in January 2025, then off to October’s sometime this month. Sorry if I’m going a little too far, but it’s not good to do these types of crimes an attempt to damage any kind of public transportation vehicle, cause it can get you in a lot of trouble and you get charged.
If this incident occurred at the East Cabot St. Railroad Crossing from the Rockport Branch, there's no way that stupid driver would've gotten away with this because the Crossing Tender on duty would've gotten a good read on the car and would've reported it to the authorities.
Yes, that’s a good point. It’s a shame the Newburyport line side of Cabot street didn’t have a crossing tender
@ if we had crossing tenders at every Railroad crossing on every MBTA line, the number of accidents would be next to nothing!
I enjoyed the video my friend
Thanks Jason !
this is super boring but at the same time its entertaining
What a dip shit driver....should lose his cdl....
Really surprised they didn't put up any pedestrian gates, especially for quiet zone crossings!
JUST GO! my god
Cool nate! Also im going to chelsea on 1/20 if you want to try attempt 2😆.
Thanks, and roger that. Will see what I can do
Cool to see Norfolk Southern in Massachusetts!
i am actually so mad at myself for missing this. i was going to bridgewater and it came through 2 minutes before i arrived. if only i remembered where i put my tripod i would have caught it
Sorry to hear that. But they wouldn’t have made the coaches if they didn’t plan on using them for a while, so I am sure they will be back
thats crazy but nice
