In this video I test the top speed over ground of my Orkney Strikeliner 16 - a small fishing boat with a semi displacement hull. It has a Honda 25hp 4 stroke outboard which can reach 5900rpm at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). I’m running a 9 inch diameter by 9 inch pitch 3 blade propeller.

On a trip up the Wareham Channel we test whether the Honda 2.3hp auxiliary outboard is able to push the boat fast enough by itself. The auxiliary motor is there just in case the main engine happens to break down. With two adults and a baby onboard we were able to reach a top speed over ground of 4.6 Knots.

We took a family trip up the River Frome and along the Wareham Channel towards Poole Harbour. It was a glorious summer day in the middle of August 2022. Come along for the ride!

After several months of hard work in the boatyard, Lady Wimborne is now newly renovated, seaworthy again and ready to be used out on the water. In this video I service the auxiliary outboard motor which I have on the back of my Orkney Strikeliner 16 . It’s a long shaft, single cylinder, air-cooled, Honda 2.3hp. It’s light weight at only 14Kg makes it an ideal back-up motor.

In this episode I remove the rusty keel band, fill lots of wholes with epoxy to make the boat watertight again, remove the paint from below the waterline and restore the hull to the original gelcoat finish.

I show you the auxiliary outboard I’ve bought for my boat. It’s a 2014 Long shaft Honda BF2.3D 2.3hp air cooled single cylinder engine. I demonstrate how to start it up whilst it’s mounted on the bracket on the back of the Strikeliner - using a bucket of water to sit the propeller in.

I show you how I go about starting the Honda 25hp 4 stroke outboard motor. You also see the boat at it’s new boatyard home and get a preview of the 2.3hp auxiliary outboard I’ve just bought as an emergency backup to main engine.

Preparations continue to get the boat looking ship shape in readiness for taking her down to the boatyard. I add a new manual bilge pump system as well as name the boat and give her some new decals.

We towed our boat down to Dorset and whilst it’s on the driveway for a couple of weeks we can start tidying up the boat, making repairs and cleaning, polishing and waxing the hull. We’ll be taking it to a boatyard when the winter storage season starts on November 1st but until then whenever we get the time we’ll start the process of getting the long list of jobs done.

Me and my wife Sarah have bought an Orkney Strikeliner 16 fishing boat from Anglesey in North Wales. We stored it on my mum’s driveway for a month whilst I got a towbar fitted on my van and until we got enough time off work to be able to go and collect it. We changed the trailer tyres and wheels for new ones and then towed it the 300 mile journey down to where we live in Dorset.
