Freshwater stories from Southern Africa
Sandfish in the Sky
Born out of sisal stems, split cane and voile fabric, a school of five Clanwilliam Sandfish came to life in the Tankwa Karoo at AfrikaBurn 2024!
Crafted by local artist Chip Snaddon and his team of creatives, the fish puppets aim to raise awareness about the endangered Clanwilliam Sandfish - a migratory species unique to the Tankwa Karoo and Cederberg Mountains, and an ambassador for healthy, free-flowing rivers in South Africa.
The sandfish artworks are also part of the World Fish Migration Day 2024 campaign, which celebrates migratory fish and free-flowing rivers around the world!
Saving Sandfish is part of the Freshwater Research Centre’s Fynbos Fish Revival initiative working to save threatened fish species and restore critical river habitat by working with local communities.

Recently its water h...

The Biedouw River is an ephemeral river on the north-eastern side of the Cederberg that flows into the Doring, South Africa's largest undammed river. The upper part of the Biedouw River holds water all year round, but the lower stretches (comprised of long shallow pools) are mo...

Watched this whole series. You guys are heroes. Thank you for all you're doing to save our native fish. I'm going to spread the word and get some bucks to you too. You guys are great 👍 👌 🇿🇦
2 more subs to hit that 1k mark! cmon people!
What an incredible documentary! What do you guys do with the invasive fish you catch?
Lovely footage. Well done. I used to see ghost frogs and tadpoles in the 1980s - without looking for them. Now, I see nothing. Good luck with your work.
eish, sad. but so cool that you beautiful humans are shining a spotlight on these incredible river systems and making a stand against the loss of our natural heritage. next time I want to come with - by Mokoro! 😁
LOVE IT! <3
'Promosm'
Love your work !!
cant we help them by breeding them as well so we can have a higher population?
Beautifully made documentary
Did people introduce bass and bluegill?
Yes, bass were introduced to improve angling, and then bluegill as a food source for the bass after they depleted indigenous fish populations through predation.
Why are the native fish gone?
The main reason is predation by invasive fish introduced from North America.
Awesome episode. Just sad to see the state of our indigenous endemic fish. Stunning catch Dean Impson. Did you release the invasive fish back and if so why?
Another brilliant episode! Noticed from around 16:20 that riparian vegetation includes Nerium oleander (Oleander), Sesbania punicea (Red Sesbania) and Cyperus textilis (Papyrus). The Oleander has been in the Doring system since at least the early 1990s, if not much earlier; the Sesbania probably much longer; and Papyrus (globally distributed) does extremely well in eutrophied water bodies. Both Oleander and Sesbania are toxic to animals and humans and I wonder what effect this might have on water quality, particularly portions of the river where Oleander forms near-impenetrable mangrove-like stands (to the exclusion of nearly all indigenous plant species). Those poor Sandfish face an uphill battle against aliens from North & South America, the Mediterranean basin and Asia!
Magnificent doccie
Full documentary is at ua-cam.com/video/usqtYALIWpI/v-deo.html
Beautifully captured, expertly edited, such a joy to watch!
An old man in Vredendal told me about the "onderbekke" they caught in the olifants near town but it sounded pretty recent the way he was telling the stories maybe small groups still inhabit the system
That is great to hear! Thanks for the info. Sandfish appear to have disappeared in the Olifants upriver from the Clanwilliam Dam but it is very likely that they still occur in the lower reaches, such as near Vredendal. What will be interesting to find out is when these sandfish are seen and where they might be spawning. It is possible they may spend summer in pools here and then migrate up to find suitable riffles in the Doring and its tributaries. There is still so much to learn :)
I love your videos.
So amazing guys! Big respect on all the hard work
lovely film

Whats the difference between sandvis and moddervis or onderbek
A sandvis and a moddervis are both onderbeks, as they have underslung mouths. The sandvis occurs in the Olifants-Doring river system, whereas the moddervis occurs in the Orange River system.
How do we get rid of invasive fish
Bruh what is your job cuz I wanna do this too
What can i do to help
