Göta kanal är ett av de största byggnadsprojekt som någonsin genomförts i Sverige. Kanalen sträcker sig från Sjötorp vid Vänern till Mem vid Slätbaken och är 190 km lång och har 58 slussar. Haldenkanalen er den eldste av de to kanalene i Norge. Kanalen ble bygget i årene 1852-1860, men i 1861 ble slusene lengst syd ødelagt. Disse ble gjenbygget først i 1877.     I live in Goole. East Yorkshire. I have seen the Hamen, many times taking cargoes of coal and coke to Norway, from the port of Goole.

    *I have a relatively flat lawn that nevertheless has a number of bumps and uneven bits in it because it is a bigger, more country like lawn🌼 **allabout.wiki/Husqvarna-315X** After the set up, which went as smoothly as can be expected given how much I hate learning to work new tech toys, Husqvarna got to work and did a surprisingly quiet job of getting the mowing done. While it has gotten itself stuck a couple of times, lifting the mower out of a too low bed edge occasionally is a whole lot less labor-intensive than dealing with having the mow crew come twice a month and having to pay the resulting bill.*

Would have been better to break it down." Spieken Ze Deutch? Ha! It only sails in good weather! And the hull has thick plate. Never gets sent out in b/s weather. Plus they sealed the bottom with water resistant epoxy! lol.

      She is still afloat after lately crossing the north sea a couple times, and she has been back and forth around the southwestern coast of Norway. Her history is not over. Laid up and mothballed, prepared for restauration, still awaiting her destiny.

    To me, it's interesting to know that a cruise ship (still in working order) will most likely be scrapped after it lived out it 25 year life span. But an 80+ year old cargo ship that's been rusting away in a harbor, they decide to refurbish and bring back to life. I'm glad they're giving this old ship a second chance, but it seems wasteful that cruise ships that are slightly obsolete get destroyed.

      Cruise ships cost a fortune to keep maintained. This old vessel has a tiny overhead in comparison. The systems on this vessel are few and simple. If a cruise ship has a mechanical failure, it's a public relations disaster for the shipping line, and old equipment gets unreliable. Lastly, this vessel doesn't require the public to find it 'in fashion'. So, the odds are stacked against a cruise ship, at least in comparison. There are a very few elderly cruise ships that have had longer lives - though Covid has done for most of them (Marco Polo comes to mind). The only one I can think of off the top of my head that might survive is MV Astoria (ex. Stockholm - yeah that one), which has recently changed hands into a corporation that want to continue to run her.

      A few thinned hull plates is normal on a ship that old, they cleaned the hull, cut away the corroded steel and replaced it with new steel patches, like they do every other vessel that has been sitting for a while and gave the ship a new coat of paint and abated nearly all the external rust

    English translation: "Hamen" is a single-decked midship boat with the engine aft. The vessel's length is 252 feet and the gross tonnage is 1364 tons. "Hamen" was built as "Pompey Power" in Sunderland in England in 1949 as a so-called "collier". The "Collier" ships were specially built to carry coal from the north to the south of England. She and the sister ship "Pompey Light" were commissioned by "The Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Citizens of the City of Portsmouth". According to the workshop, these two ships were among "the finest colliers afloat". Although the diesel engine was common in 1949, they were still built with a steam engine and a coal-fired boiler. The hull was painted black, while the deckhouse and masts were brown, except for the bridge wings which were white. The crew consisted of up to 23 men. The "Collier" ships were specially built to carry coal from the north - to the south of England. "Pompey Power" was to deliver coal to the power plant in Portsmouth. in England nationalized, and the ships taken over by The British Electricity Authority, but operated by the shipping company Stephenson, Clarke Ltd., which is still an up-and-coming British shipping company. The Pompey sisters continued at this pace until 1960, when a new large oil-fired power plant was put into operation. With a reduced need for coal, "Pompey Power" was sold to the Norwegian shipping company A / S Orion-Tandberg & Møinichen in Drammen in 1960. The ship was renamed "Tandik", and put into North Sea shipping. As early as 1962, "Tandik" was sold on to Hans Utkilen in Bergen, who renamed her "Hamen". The wedge had the steam engine removed and a 1200 bhp 9-cylinder ACAT Wichmann diesel engine fitted instead. Without exaggeration, we can argue that without the Wichmann machine, "Hamen" would not have existed today. All similar ships with steam engines have been dismantled! The superstructures were also somewhat redecorated and modernized. M / S "Hamen" is very representative of Norwegian and European shipping in the period from the interwar period until the 1960s / 70s. "Hamen" sailed in northern European, Baltic and North Sea freight from 1949 until 1986, with coal, ore, stone, timber and general cargo. The logbooks tell of many trips between Norway and England, and also of trips to Murmmansk, the Baltic Sea, Central Europe and Spain. This speed was maintained with great success until the early 1980s, but from then on it became clear that such an old ship could no longer compete with the modern ships. "Hamen" was partly in storage during the summer, and in 1986 the ship was permanently docked in Mastrevik north of Bergen. Attempts were made to preserve the "Hamen" as a museum ship and training ship for future seafarers, and the ship was given the status of a ship worthy of protection by the National Heritage Board. The Norwegian Association for Vessel Protection also became strongly involved in this work, and was probably close to succeeding with its conservation plan in 1996. Nevertheless, "Hamen" was sold in 1994 to Lupine Shipping Ltd., on St. Vincent. "Hamen" was towed to a workshop on the Swedish side of the Iddefjord, and "Hamen" has since been in storage in the Iddefjord, hidden and almost forgotten. Until December 2012, "Hamen" was in storage in Iddefjorden near Halden. Then it was towed from Iddefjorden to Hirtshals Yard in Denmark, and in January 2013 it was docked. The foundation believes that m / s "Hamen" has a very high conservation value based on criteria such as representativeness, rarity, age, affection value and symbol value. "Hamen" is now 64 years old, in the context of ship technology a very old age, and thus "Hamen" can also document shipbuilding technology used in the period from 1900 to the 1950s. The ship is recognizable to thousands of seafarers, their families and the shipping industry, and therefore has great affection value and symbolic value. Of several thousand ships similar to "Hamen", there are only a few left in the whole world, of which "Hamen" is the only Norwegian.
