We take the Barky to Bembridge for an August weekend break from the harvest. We had heard that the harbour run a family weekend every summer with loads to fun activities for the wee-uns and a bit of a party too. We had a nail biting crossing which got upto a F6, then a great time there so thanks to Duver Marina for that and also to Bembridge Siling Club - where we went to watch the women's worl...

Dragged my old speedboat out of the shed for a rag tag operation down the Thames on new years eve. Was concerned it might be too rough as there were gales down on the coast, however in the city it turned out to be fairly sheltered, plus it was low water which makes a huge difference. Happy new year!

I've a new Barky! A Contest 25, my first proper fin keel yacht that's not a trailer sailer. This inaugural sail is just a solo day sail accross the Solent on a perfect day for it at the start of a new sailing season. In this video you'll see the Royal yacht club which is a lovely place to visit and an easy day trip over from Portsmouth harbour. What do you think? Leave a comment..

I stopped picking up floating bottles after the Novichok incident!
😂 Sound advice that in these times!
You did well with sailing and doing the Vidio. The mirror is a great little boat.
Thanks sometimes it's hard to juggle the two especially using by phone as a camera! Lost my phone in Bembridge harbour in the summer, but I was walking along the pontoon when I turned around admiring a wooden yacht my hand hit one of the electricity bollards and it flew out my hand into the drink! Water was about 10ft deep I made several dives to try and find it but after I came up under the pontoon scared the hell out of me so gave up. Used it as an excuse to go back there the next week and so sailed the mirror over there to search for it with a gopro on a stick - check out that video... Thanks for watching.
Hello mate, enjoy the videos. How much water does the mirror need under her and also any chance of a shorts video on your main sheet set up as I’m hoping to run a outboard on my mirror next spring!
Hi, glad you like them cheers. Dagger board down maybe 2ft, dagger board up rudder up maybe 6inches! As for the mainsheet it's not complicated, tie off one end on the port side transom, then run it through a block at the boom end, then through the block on the starboard side of the transom and into your hand. So it forms a triangle off the transom to the boom. Tie a stopper knot in the end. Maybe I'll do a rigging video next time I drag her out the shed ay might be good to do.. Thanks for watching!
@ okay mate thanks for that! A rigging video would be great! Look forward to it 👍🏼
Love the videos mate, how much water does she need under her? And also would you be able to do a shorts video to show your main sheet set up as I hope to run a small outboard on my mirror next spring
Cheers! Longer reply on other comment here's the short version: WaterBugger all, if you can see water you can float her. Mainsheet - fasten to transom corner - boom - other transom corner pully- hand.
Another fabulous video 👌😊 it cheers the soul 🤙
So glad to hear this that's what the effect I'm aiming for. Sometimes when I'm a bit stressed just seeing a painting of a sailboat does that for me!
Thats impressive at low water 👍🏻👍🏻. It’s 3 hours either side of HW (and that’s springs) to give you 1.5m clearance. And the depth over the bar is on the harbour website, I can confirm the accuracy having tested it in a 1.5m draft yacht some years ago. Enjoy the Mirror it’s sailing at its purest. If I see you upside down don’t worry we’ll come and pick you up 🤓🤓👍🏻👍🏻
😂 Good man!
I was sorry for your stress, but that was _very_ funny. Imagine if trains still emptied their lavatories onto the tracks. 😄 I've never seen *any* sailing boat in the canal beside the M27 there, so it's a heroic first in my view. Always glad to see you have liquid assets on board - but get that drinks holder screwed down securely, or gimballed! Fascinating to see the _Britannia_ moored up there. For most of the last seven years she was at Hythe, I didn't know she'd moved. She was built 30 years ago (rather badly) but never finished, as a replica of King George V's yacht. The builders ran out of money and she's been like a dark shadow wherever they parked her since.
Glad I entertained! Sure I'm not the first that was probably a bronze age trader but I'll take the heroic part! Some interesting local knowledge there thanks for sharing thanks again for watching!
Fathom. Six feet. Roughly 2 metres.
Cheers 😏 Spelling is corrected!
Thanks for bringing us along for your adventures mate. I'm watching from my sailboat in the middle of a weeklong exploration of the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia. I havent been sailing in ages, finally Back to the Barky!
Glad to hear that Jimmy! Bet its glorious.. What boat is she?
@@backtothebarky a Hartley TS16, like a dinghy but with a lid on it
Googled it looks perfect mate smaller the boat the more the fun. Cosy for a week but has to be done have a good un!
Great video and thank you for saying "goosewing" as that's the proper name 😊 Loved it when you were laid under the bridge. How much for the other boat?
Tis the right true Christian way to describe it yes! Yes I almost bottled it and didn't go through, all those high voltage warning signs etc! As for the famous Jaba well if you're genuinely interested email me and I'll let you know the details: backtothebarky@gmail.com. Thanks for watching!
I learned to sail in one of these, back in the mid 70s. Many a happy hour was spent off Deal, and out to the Goodwin Sands.
Wow that's a few miles out into the channel pretty epic sailing a mirror that. Twas normal in the 70s tho I'm sure! Did you capsize out there?
@@backtothebarky Never. It's generally calm on the land side of the Goodwins, and besides, we were fearless (A.K.A. stupid) teenagers. We did wear PFDs, and carried a small box of flares, just in case.
An interesting trip! An old stomping ground. The first bridge you encountered was the Eastern Road bridge, the second was the Hilsea railway bridge followed by the Portsbridge roundabout that used to be one bridge but is now two ...in order to accommodate the roundabout. And afterwards the M275.. and the ditch is called Port Creek which separates Portsmouth from the mainland.
Yes I should do more research beforehand to improve my tour-guiding 😏 Love the fact Portsmouth is an island, Wikipedia says it's the 3rd most populated island of the British Isles after Great Britain and Ireland! Thanks for watching all the way.
The sculpture reminded me of the children’s game jacks, and when I looked it up it’s indeed that called the Jack Star sculpture by Richard Farrington. Keep up the adventures!
That's the one! Thanks for watching shipmate.
Good one fella. I've driven past that many times and wondered if that trip was possible too. Nice to see you succeed. That sculpture reminds me of a game we used to play called Jacks. You would have half a dozen of those shaped objects and a rubber ball. You'd throw the jacks on the ground and bounce the ball while having to pick up the jacks. Not quite GTA, but they were simpler times eh. Best wishes Al
I know I had the game but didn't remember the rules... Sounds like hours of fun 😂 cheers for watching again Al.
time well spent chap.
Yer it was. Only wish I could spend more! Thanks man
@@backtothebarky roll on spring me ol mucker.
Great! I very much like your videos. I keep thinking I should get my hands on a mirror.
Thanks matey! Yes they are good fun, plenty out there in need of use/rescue, shame to let them fall to bits, and spares are abundant so a cheap way to get out there. Thanks for watching.
Love it. I drive past Portsbridge Creek every day on the A27 and sail and Kayak around Portsmouth/Langstone/Chi. Great to see some familiar waters from a different perspective.
Glad to hear this cheers! What sort of boat/s you sail? Have you ever sailed through there though? I bet v few do! Thanks for watching
Bembridge like taking a Time Machine back to the 1950’s A great place to stay 👍🏻

Yer I do look sus 😂 Glad to provide some nostalgia thanks for watching.
I used to go to 2nd Fareham Sea scouts, I've launched from that slipway many times and made exactly the same journey, good to reminisce and see someone else.
Glad to hear it. You should get back out there again! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Wing on....hoodie
Love this 😀
Cheers matey! Simple sailing feels good.
Hi. Lovely trip. Well done. We’re planning the same trip in the next few days (but starting from Northney and in a Hawk 20). Aiming to get in and out again on the same tide. What was the tide level (metres above chart datum) when you arrived at the quay. We’re expecting 4 to 5m and hoping it’ll be quite a bit deeper than when you were there!
Love those Hawk 20s, should be good.. Watch again at the 24m40 point I show the quayside and say it's HW and just under a 5 meter tide that day. Date was 27Aug22 if you want to look up what it was exactly. As I say in the video satellite pic was more useful than the navionics chart, finding the correct way through will be more important for you, it is quite a maze! Make sure you arrive there too early and bump your way up, wouldn't want to be late then get stranded. I wouldn't go up there if it's too windy either. I managed to sail all the way in wind behind me but the meanders and narrow channels mean you'd be very lucky to get the wind fair for both the way in and the way out so defo take your outboard. Some withies and a long punt pole would be useful too! Love the comment thanks for watching, good luck let me know how you get on..
@@backtothebarky Thanks for the tips (I somehow missed the bits about tide at the end of your video). We didn't go in the end: too windy one day and too late to get back before sunset on the next; will try again sometime. But I spent a couple of hours watching the water levels. For others planning this trip, HW at Sidlesham Quay was an hour later than the 6m HW at Pagham Beach - couldn't tell where the channel was by then (though Navionics would probably help) because the entire area of marsh vegitation was covered. So on a 6m tide suggest aim to arrive at the quay an hour *before* Pagham HW and on a 5m tide aim to arrive *at* Pagham HW. (And take care to avoid the submerged concrete structure about 20m past the quay (in the tempting continuation of the channel!).
@@GeorgeMetcalfe-h2b Thanks for replying with the info. V useful observations those well done. Will return to this before I go there next time! Shame you didn't get there but there's always another opportunity. The withies suggestion was for that reason - went back to that pub for a meal (by car) a month later on a higher high tide and whole lot was under. Might pay to mark the critical junctions if you wanted to leave on HW. Defo want to arrive earlier for that reason too as you'll have no chance if it's all under on the way in. Mind you the Google sat image this year is a LW shot and much clearer you could navigate with that pretty well.
I like mirror dinghies and sailing them with a purpose. And I salute your efforts to make it a family outing !
They are really great fun boats wish I could get out more often get the kids sailing it. Was a fun little trip thanks for the comment!
That's cool. I need to add another line to my mast, to get my additional sail/spinnaker working.
Yes this boat has been upgraded with an emergency forestay that's what I've bent that sail onto. It's about a foot or so inside the furler. Need to get a shot of it going upwind next time, never occurred to me when I filmed this. You could of course do this with 2 x hank ons on one Forestay. Again, thanks for watching!
How does she handle with the outboard fixed to one side mate? Assuming you just steer with the rudder
Hi no problem really, obvs sits more level when you counterbalance it when sitting on the opposite side. Yes I use the tiller to steer. That is a very light one though that old 2hp two stroke. That seized up in July, last two trips I've used my heavier 2.5hp 4 stroke still not too heavy goes well. Biggest issue with the Outboards is that the mainsheet snags up on them a lot, that and when they bloody break down 😂 Thanks for watching, check out my latest vid crossing the Solent with the 2.5..
Good old haul for billy boy 👊
Awesome video, very few people go to Pagham. Great to see it can be done. Pity 27th Aug 2024 wasn't so fine.
2 years to the day, 28th isn't so bad! Need to go back. I'm really tempted to attempt the little estuary on the other side of the Bill... Thanks for watching.
@@backtothebarky I was looking at that place too - which they call Medmerry. I never knew it existed till this year. Hope you get there mate.
Well done fella. A good day out that didn't look too promising. Is the big cylinder a mast float or radar reflector? Thanks for letting us join you afloat! Al
Hi mate.. Good question, it's a radar reflector - I do have one of those tin diamond ones I nearly rigged then thought actually this one would be better as would also hopefully act as a float too if that situation did arise! Glad you liked it.
Excellent! Is that what you call 'motor sailing'?
Mostly it was, I'm always in a hurry in the summer unfortunately! Could have sailed the whole way v v easily in those conditions. Wind was force 3 and 4 ESE ish. Perfect. Shame I had to rush but fun none the less.
What a bloke you are. Cracking voice as well.
😂 Cheers matey!
You absolutely light up my day when put a video out. I too have a mirror & a small trailer sailer and hanker to do the things you do. However I am a landlocked sailer. I purchased a rope ladder, as I couldn't climb back in after capsizing my mirror. They are very high in the water.
And your comments light up my day! Was considering launching her in the pond to practice a capsize, definitely will do now! Get out there Joe summers not over yet..
It took me awhile to appreciate the Mirror dinghy... You know on those really old Tug boats; They had a great big thick "mop" ( That's what I think it reminds me of...)on the bow to protect ship she was pushing... You know what I'm talking about? I imagine a great big fluffy one of those on the bow of your boat...Give it that "tug boat" look...How about that? :)
I just looked it up; They're called "Pudding", or" Bow Beards" or something like that... :)
Needs it the amount of stuff I run into! Thanks for watching. I did another video last week I sailed up the river to Rye Harbour, but then lost my phone in Bembridge Harbour at the weekend, all the footage gone. Gutted!

The raid of the Barky, Huzzah!
I used to sit there.
Did you catch much?
The pleasure to be had from a boat is inversely proportional to its length. How true.
Let’s go champ 🌊🦀
Yer boy!! The sticker is rigged on the Barky!
Are you sailing out of the CSSA (POG) down Weevil lane?
🙂👍
What a great video, lovely to see the kids enjoying the adventure. Sorry Emily hit her head but it seems all is well.
Yes she was fine. Not much sailing in this one but half the reason I make these is so the kids can easily watch them back in the future. Thanks for watching!
subbed! I was told by my sailing club that without the jib my mirror rig would never go upwind. You seem to be getting on alright.
Nice one thanks. Yes they have a forward mast step position for using main only. Takes the balance point forward. Believe it's then a 'Cat' rig. I can't be bothered faffing around with the jib really, I'm not racing, I'm sure it will go a bit faster with the jib but only if there's a decent amount of wind, it doesn't seem to do a lot on light airs which I like sailing in.
Well I sailed Mirror in sailing regattas here in South Africa for many hours. What a fabulous buoyant little boat. My father actually ran a company in Joburg building Mirror dinghy's under licence to the Jack Holt designed boat sponsored by the Daily Mirror in the UK
Excellent video, thanks for allowing me to steal your idea. I've a home built 24ft trimaran and I've just given her a 23ft mast. I'm struggling to raise the mast without help however your design looks perfect for me.
Oh wow love hearing this. Tis High praise coming from someone who's built their own boat. Is it wood or fibreglass? Either way those things are so fast I'd love to sail one one day.
Ps if I did it again I wouldn't bother with a winch and a strap roller I'd just use pully blocks and a cleat.
The joys of simple boating, life doesn't get any better than that.
True words them. Wish I could get out there more!
Watching this brings back many happy memories of Mirror sailing.
Glad to hear that Phil. UA-cam is an amazing thing!
Enjoyed this video, and have all your others I have watched so far. I'm relatively new to dinghy sailing myself, so your channel is a good source of information. Listened to what you said about the Navionics app, will certainly be checking that out for use on my little boat, an 11ft Gull. Regards David.
Fantastic, glad you enjoy them. I've got a 25ft sailboat but often think and say it's probably as much if not more fun and adventure on the dighy. Roger Barnes is right! Good luck thanks for watching thanks for commenting.
Great video!
Where’s your life jacket?
..and a dinghy is cheaper to run. I really enjoy your vids..esp your catch phrase "..back to the barky..’. I learned to sail a dinghy one summer in Wraysbury but that was like 30yr ago. Won't know of it's like riding a bike until or unless I give it another go. Quite fancy a mirror…versatile little boats. Where/when did you learn to sail?
I should think it is like riding a bike. I started boating by buying a speedboat at 20 (still have it 20 years on see my latest vid 😏) then I learned to sail initially via the army. They use sailing a lot for adventurous training. It's good for that as it puts you in genuine danger at times amongst random people where you need to work together etc. Increased my sailing skills only really by going out solo on my own boats though. That's how you truly learn when there's none around to help you! The books do help too. Thanks for watching my vids matey, get back out on your own Barky it is glory!
