Simple Lean Fix: Compressor Room Safety
Hi folks, in this before-and-after video, we tackle a common safety issue in our compressor room. Low metal supports were causing painful head bumps during inspections, so we took action. Adding bright yellow foam padding improved visibility, reduced risk, and made our process more efficient. This is a perfect example of how small adjustments can drive organizational excellence and transform workplace culture.

      Thanks for the comment! Glad you’re enjoying the videos. To get a good answer to this question, I'd suggest reading or listening to Lean Life by Paul Akers. He explains this much better than I can (paulakers.net/books/lean-life). Generally speaking, to achieve your goals using the lean approach, focus on small, consistent improvements. For example, pick one small goal or habit you want to work on. Don’t try to tackle everything at once. Lean is all about focusing and simplifying. Then, look at your daily routine and identify small inefficiencies or distractions that are holding you back. Fixing these “little things” clears the path to bigger progress. Next, commit to improving just 1% every day. It doesn’t have to be perfect-just a little better than yesterday. Finally, cut out activities that don’t help you reach your goals. Focus on what adds value to your life. Remember, success isn’t about massive changes overnight-it’s about consistent, small steps. Keep improving every day, and you’ll get there! 😊💪

      Focus on what is within your realm of control. Make work and life easy for yourself first. Naturally, this will start to generate pull, curiosity and an interest towards lean. Push doesn't work well. As you become more satisfied with your own improvements, start to expand improvements within common areas but still within your control. Perhaps others will start to realize the benefits and that's how get even more pull. Improvement Starts With I. Pull not push. All the best!

    • @normohara
      @normohara 17 днів тому

      @puteracamaro's comment is spot on. It sounds like you're in a tough spot, but I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I know how frustrating it can feel when others don’t immediately see the value in small, consistent improvements. I have watched and re-watched this video my Paul Akers a dozen times and get value every time (ua-cam.com/video/DhRjlIkj2Nw/v-deo.html) In the video, Paul Akers talks about starting with your own area and making small changes that make your life easier-like how he improved the process for writing notes or managing tools in the shop. The truth is, we all have so much inefficiency and sloppiness in our own lives that we can focus on improving ourselves endlessly-and that’s where the real magic of 2 Second Lean begins. When you invest in cleaning up your own habits, spaces, and processes, it not only transforms your day-to-day life but also inspires others without needing to convince them with words. They’ll start to see the difference in how you work and live, and that can be much more powerful than trying to persuade them directly. Not everyone will understand immediately, but that’s okay! Stay patient and consistent, and over time, your actions will show that 2 Second Lean isn’t nonsense-it’s about creating a smoother, more joyful way of living and working. You've got this! 😊

      It’s awesome that you’re thinking about improving yourself. I suggest you start by focusing on reducing waste in your life-time, energy, or resources-and strive to do everything with purpose and precision. Become an expert at the processes you do every day, and always think about the next person you’re impacting. This simple mindset shift can make a huge difference in your success. I highly recommend reading 2-Second Lean by Paul Akers and checking out his UA-cam channel-it’s packed with practical ideas you can use to improve yourself and create lasting impact!

    It is waste but it isn’t waste but it is waste. I define waste as anything that does not add value to the product from the perspective of the customer. Some customers might say this adds value. It would be better to find a way to reduce the defect during production. It’s hard to eliminate QC at the end of production sometimes. Maybe have the operator do that after it has been produced instead of having someone dedicated to doing it. Make the go no go smaller so it can be kept closer to the machine. Just throwing out ideas. Love seeing this stuff. Keeps your mind on waste and how to eliminate it!!!

    This is so simple but so many companies don’t see it! I worked in a hardwood flooring factory and whenever we needed to compare the colour of a floor board from the finishing line with the showroom sample we needed to take a 5 minute round trip walk. Production stopped for that entire time, affecting at least 6 people. Then after we looked at the colour comparison we would need to make colour adjustments to the stain. That took at least 10 minutes (weighing, mixing, allowing the machine to cycle the new stain) then after that another 5 minutes to apply the finish and cure it. 20 minutes at least to check if the colour was right. And if it wasn’t we had to walk back to the showroom. Unfortunately I was not there long enough to solve the problem, and I was a beginner in lean thinking.

      I know what you mean. I sometimes feel embarrassed posting because once you see the improvement, you realize how silly it was that we suffered for so long, and you can't help but ask, "What were we thinking?" 🤣
