The knives I’ve made and the steps I take to make one
I honestly disagree with the 1st 3 issues you have. I am 6ft 230lbs of juice head. I do not wear baggy clothes. I rock it in the pocket of all my different pants and jeans with zero problems you are experiencing. No seatbelt issue, no hip issue or movement restrictions but I rock pocket (inside wasteband would be illegal where I'm at with blade length and concealed). And my jackets don't really go past my pocket, they all stop at the hip. I also tried it with flannels as the seemed longer than my coats and no matter how slow or fast I drew with the pocket flip feature I could not re create it possible cutting my garment. I have a feeling that the knife may be a little to large for your body size. That's why I added my stats in this reply. I even carry a large phone in a thick case in the same pocket as my espada xl. So this is a good video with the caption as " smaller guys with espada xl carry issues" , because that vould be helpful and that's the only think I can think of why you are having these issues. Not a dig by any means, just observing and trying to help out.
I understand what your saying but I’m average. I should have included that in the video. I’m 5’10” and weigh 180 pounds. But yeah if you’re bigger then that does simplify things when carrying this knife.
very good job-reminds me alittle of the old timer deer slayer
Thank you. I looked up the deer slayer and it does look pretty close. Nice.
@@totesmalotes thanks, keep up the good work
Wishing you good fortune on this project, including the sale 🤞🍀 ! You have had enough obstacles already.
Thank you. I went into selling this knife as an experience and it’s been interesting so far. Thanks again for the good luck.
Sorry bout your loss, congrats on the client! Makes a lot of sense your reasoning for what a more ideal blade shape would be for its purpose.
Thank you, and yeah it sucks to lose a knife. Especially like that. I think my ideas will make the skinning knife better but I still need to ask some questions to make sure.
You gotta be a less George fan,eh?? Looks like it anyways he’s one of my favorites.
I honestly hadn’t heard of him until now. I looked him up and he has some very nice designs with similar spines to mine. It reminds me of “nothing new under the sun.”
Yeah, his are mostly high flat & saber grinds, but he’s got a a few full flat designs. The Spine was ,what I thought was, clueing me in. Yeah something about that. Spine speaks to me as well.
@ it is nice. It reminds me of a high speed boat. Thanks for telling me about Les George.
Sure thing ✌🏻
Nice work, bro!!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Saved my bacon when it got to the end of a sheath build and realized that I hadn’t stitched the belt loop yet.
Ha ha it happens. Glad to have helped.
Heat treat in house. You will respect yourself in the morning.
The reason I chose 80crv2 steel for the first knife I intend to sell is because it’s the easiest to heat treat out of the steels I like. So I might do that in the future. Whether I will begin to respect myself in the morning, remains to be seen.
whats the make and model?
I made the knife. I made it for my dad.
well loved
It definitely is.
It all comes from the same factory in China, just different skill sets, apps made products.....Trust me on this, I know shit.
Sorry to hear of the theft. I do like the look of that one you're carrying. Congrats on the commision.
Thank you. I was mad about the theft for some days. Now I’m sending an apple air tag along with my knives. I did it with the knife I’m going to sell and it worked. The commission should be fun. Hope you have a great coming week.
@totesmalotes thanks, hoping you have a positive upturn in fortunes in the coming weeks !
Kudos to using 3v. Perfect for an axe. I have a Bark River Golok which has seen some minor "abuse" (that wasn't intended) and it knicked a lot lot less than other metallurgies have.
@@AldoSchmedack thank you. I have been using 3V for knives for a long time at it is really an all around great steal for many tasks.
Seems like you got a real dud, mine was used extensively to turn dead trees into kindling and held up fine, nor did it have any fit and finish issues that weren't shortcomings of the design itself (that brass on the bottom is a hand shredder when you've been chopping long enough). It's not on that they shipped out one in the state of yours, let alone to America where shipping means it's not as easy to just get in touch with Tod and send it over to him in the post. You keep saying this is point focused but mine chops as well as my kukri, if not better. I think the fact your blade is slanted probably changed what it does in the hand.
It could be I got an outlier. I emailed them with a description of the problems my dirk had and I never got a response. It could be that the canted blade affected my dirk’s ability to chop. This dirk does have a long blade but I still find that yours being able to out chop your kukri surprising. Thank you for adding your positive experience with this dirk. I’ve always found it helpful to get information from several people before making a purchase and I hope my video, along with the comments, helps someone.
Beautiful collection
Thank you.
maybe just add some resin inside and that should set the lead ball
I hadn’t thought about resin. Thanks, it gives me another option.
I made a hiking staff with the same hame ball. I don't think you need to add lead. It would cause enough damage on it's own. If you want to fix it as is drill a hole and inject epoxy in side, then plug the hole with the right size brass rod. Nicely done overall. The one thing I would caution is the screw sitting proud as it might tear hear hand. Us older folks don't have as tough of skin as we use to have.
Thank you for the idea. I might use epoxy in the future. The screw is a problem. I could grind the head a bit and then add a slot for a screw driver in the future. If it becomes a problem i might have no choice but to do that.
Epoxy to sturdy the lead.
Thank you. At first I didn’t know if I was going to remove the lead. I didn’t know if it was too heavy but I could just pour epoxy where the lead is and avoid the wood itself. It would work.
The base to me is a bit weird, I always got told they kept them flat, as you could use your other hand to hit it and drive it through tougher materials? That castle not looking thing will definitely not make this comfortable.
I always picture in a real knife fight a person would just go bananas. I think hitting the end of the handle would work if armor is involved because the fight might be less hectic. I’m not too sure, just a thought.
The brass piece is called a Hame Ball and it is off of a drafts horses harness. Nice work on the cane by the way.
Nice. Thank you for the compliment and the knowledge. I’ll look it up.
Really good job. I'm very impressed with how that turned out. Especially with using a belt grinder. Use a copper pipe on the end. That's what I use. I've used a cane for a long time hurt my knees in army.
Thanks. I was thinking of trying to solder some copper to figure out a tip. Some regular pipe would work too if I shaped the tip of the cane. Thanks for the idea, that’s tough about the knees.
the brass is a cane handle - there are many versions of it for sale online - my brother has one
So it is for a cane. Nice. Thanks for letting me know. Someone said jokingly that it looked like the handle of a dueling pistol. We had ideas but we guessed it was for a walking stick.

Ha ha yeah. One of the joys of hand sanding.
But doesn't it defeat the purpose using pellets to make pellets probably show us a different source of lead
I bought lead bars from eBay and these are pellets I made that came out wrong so I’m recycling them. I don’t think using a different lead source would change what I’m trying to show in this video.

What kinda pants this have on? None of my espada give me this issue
I’m wearing American Eagle jeans, which have pretty much the same pockets as Levi’s.
Say no more. Already I know those pockets aren't deep enough. Whatever pants you wear make sure it's a little loose fitting and pocket a little deeper.

Carry them big knives without the stupid clip. They are long enough that they don’t flop in the pocket. I carry an espada large g10 no clip
Have you decided on a material for the scales?
Yeah, it’s going to be mesquite. The video I’ll do for the handles will be me splitting a log or dead branch to make the knife scales from scratch; in a way of speaking.
Looking cool so far 👍
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Fakes are all around us, now, in your room. Fake, fake, fake. 24-7 fake.
Just going to mention that you probably have the budget version using cheaper materials, this is not disguised Tod say as much in his videos, if you want use it practically you will have to buy the pemium item.
I have seen his videos and what I have taken from his description of both his budget knives and fancier versions is that they are both practical reproductions. I don’t believe that the knife I bought is intended solely as a prop. I may have interpreted Tod’s description differently but if I would have thought his budget knives were props or not fully functional then I wouldn’t have bought the knife and would not have considered it a faithful reproduction.
Who knew Uyghur children could sharpen knives?
The thing is probably made in india
I haven’t looked into it extensively but I remember reading that some of his knives are.
Been carrying a Rajah II for over a decade now but another downside, along with any wave rider, is that they destroy your jeans, particularly where the nub/catch is that activates the wave rider function. Every one of my jeans I wear for work has a hole where the catch pokes out now.
Get different pants dumb ass
This is probably common sense to most of you, but I’m a bit of a knucklehead: Do not hold it with the tip facing up and disengage the lock with your thumb. The blade will fall on your finger and you’ll get a cut on your knuckle that will require stitches at best. Ask me how I know.
I never broke a CS knife pre sale, post sale 2 bushman's broke, the entire bushman series is garbage, they changed something. My brother says his new recon 1 wont hold an edge like his old one.
I personally don’t really trust the new Cold Steel knives. They haven’t been tested as extensively by both the manufacturer and consumers as old Cold Steel knives.
I carry a good locking fanny bag wherever I go (very handy for phone, keys, etc) fits and conceales my espada perfectly
Nice. It’s a good idea.
Gotta get the ruby red for your collection 😎 One day I'll get grab the polished one lol
The ruby red one does look super nice.
I've had several tod cutler pieces, I must say the quality control is not great, especially on the sharpening. But they are still the best you will get in the price range. My rondel had a loose blade, my quillion dagger rusted like it was made of pig iron and my stiletto had been heat treated such that I could bend it strongman fashion by accident. In my case the this Dirk had a properly done edge (many of the others had the edge bevel at an angle not suitable for an axe) and I used it for a lot of yard work, the brass on the back is painful but other than that it was good for it. The seax was my favourite, but it was not full tang and the handle split, though the handling was probably so nice because it wasn't full tang, also it had the best blade by far, as it had a good edge profile unlike the others. Overall I'd say be informed about what you are getting, these are historically accurate, most of them are not very useful in any modern context as they are meant for chainmail, not a utility in the current context. They might look cool, but that will quickly wear off, go for something practical, e.g. A chopping blade with a comfortable handle, there are some excellent offers but also some duds. The new Dirk is likely good, as will be the german peasant knives. The seax is good so long as you aren't doing much more than taking the branches off a Christmas tree. The butchers knife he offers is unusable unless you have a sharpening station, the blade profile means its about as blunt as a mallet and handles worse. There is a serious problem if this issues are spread at random rather than specific to the batch. But to be frank other people offer things which don't even have the historical design in this price range, the sword market is more competitive, but only because a handful of companies keep up competition and quality for the entire market, Tod cutler is like if LK Chen were they only people who felt like researching the swords they imitate.
Thank you for posting your experience with Todd’s knives. I think his knives are the most historically accurate looking but I doubt they’re as functional as the originals. Knowing what I know now, I would have just bought a Cold Steel Rondel.
If I had to bring something that big with me into a sketchy area, I think I'd be better off bringing a gun.
A gun is better by far. But in some areas, this is weird, I can carry this knife but not a gun.
@@totesmalotes Byrna HD pepper ball gun will really F#$% someone up without the legal hassle. Legal to carry and conceal virtually anywhere.
That knife is a beast. I have a utilty/EDC 80CrV2 blade; it's about 2 years old. At first I hated the patina but now I like the "used and abused" look. Holds it's edge well.
Thank you. I really like how patina looks too. I grew up using carbon steel tools and having my knife look like that is aesthetically pleasing to me.

I have mine right next to my bed right now I bought 1-3 years ago and it’s the best investment I’ve ever made. Yep, overall it’s a great jug to have.

hot take: the only time 1:1 clones are a BAD thing are when they are trying to be sold as a real one with the price tag to go with it. if people who want the original item that cant afford it, yet can afford the knock off but would never pay for an original than there is zero impact on the original company. id even argue that some people who buy a knock off might enjoy them so much that they go out n spend on a real one and never would have without having the cheaper one to "try before buy"
I agree that the only downside to a clone knife, for a consumer, is when it is represented as something it’s not. For the maker though; it takes a lot of money to design a knife along with trial and error to see what people will actually buy. There’s a lot of money pumped into marketing and testing to create and preserve a trust from the consumer and there’s a lot of money that goes into patents and research to make knife locks and materials that will work the best for what their niche of consumers are looking for. It reminds me of the meme of the cat fishing and putting fish in a bucket while another cat fishes from his bucket.
Really enjoy your designs they are very far away from things i use. Im working on handle designs. Sometimes what i think isn't comfortable when actually done. I have 2 puuko knives they have a classic design. Which is easy to make. But im trying to make by feeling alone you know were the sharp part is. Im starting to believe one finger groove is best. But i want the knife to be comfortable in any grip. I thought small knives would be easier then choppers i was very wrong. My 2 are 80cv 2 one is very hard 62 the other 59. Wanna see which preform best.
Thank you. For handles it helps me to leave some space around the original design and then grind parts that feel uncomfortable. My two main concerns with a knife handle is that I don’t want my hand to go onto the blade and I don’t want the knife flying out of my hand. To be able to close your eyes and point accurately at anything with a knife I’ve found that the longer the blade the better; small distinctions in the handle and an oval shape help with orientation. I can’t design a small knife for whatever reason. I don’t mean in terms of function but ascetically. I don’t know if you’re going to make videos of your knives but if you did I would watch them. They sound interesting.
@@totesmalotes I'll give it a try. When I finish I'll tag you so you know. Thanks for the advice.
