Citizen Erased's Depthanime: Exploring the Depths of The Serial Experiments Lain
In the "Depthanime" series of Citizen Erased, we try to highlight some of the most mind-boggling sttuff we've seen in Anime.
www.citizenerased.eu
The first episode of the series features:
Serial experiments Lain: Season 1 Episode 4 | "I'm still me"
Lain contends that she's still herself, yet the line between 'reality' and the online network called "Wired" is more blurry than ever. So, we are left wondering: is she still herself?

I was genuinely surprised to hear that people initially didn’t like the show’s ending. It was easily the best part of the show for me. Idc about giant robots fighting & the slice of life stuff was fine, but i just can’t get enough of shows that get really heady & reference stuff like Jung

back when I watched ep 25 and 26, I was so dumbfounded by Kaworu's death that I couldn't even understand nor even care what those 2 episode were about. The whole time when I was watching those 2 episode I was literally just thinking about Kaworu's death. But after I finished watching everything (I'm talking about the manga, rebuilds and EoE) I decided to rewatch these 2 episodes because I skipped a lot, AND MAN I CHANGED MY MIND. OUT OF THE 4 (anime, manga, rebuilds, and EoE) THE ANIME HAD THE BEST ENDING IN MY OPINION. I DONT CARE WHAT YALL SAY. I LIKE IT.

'I will give you a restriction." That voice and the way he said that, always sounded so godly to me. Ironically it was the voice of shinjis father.

it was ultimately his father that gave him a restriction and something to actually do in life that lead to his growth - making him an EVA pilot. is it fucked up? yes. but it was important

I hate to be one of those "2deep4u" but in this case, it really was for most people. People don't like to be confronted with their own weak, pathetic nature. Anime watchers don't like to be called out for their stunted emotional growth, and so they rejected it, called it pretentious. Anno broke a big unwritten rule with this and EoE. And that is 'don't make the audience feel bad about themselves'. But it's like fighting an addiction. For a lot of people, agknowleging one's immaturity and insecurities can open the way for wonderful personal growth. I know that's how it made me feel when I watched this for the first time.

I love NGE so much. Like no other anime has helped me out this much-helped me have self-compassion for my flaws and knowing my existence is worth existing for, the strength and courage to keep going and to form relationships even if it hurts, like ugh it's just amazingly profound with all the psychology and philosophy in it and how well it captures the human condition. Time for another rewatch <3

there's this bukowski quote that talks about isolation and its relation to freedom that always stuck with me, not because I live by it, but because I fail to understand why some people do believe it. “...and when nobody wakes you up in the morning, and when nobody waits for you at night, and when you can do whatever you want. what do you call it, freedom or loneliness?” (granted there are probably other quotes that say the same thing, I know that Arthur Schopenhauer basically said the same thing once as well) I never really got it, because as someone who always enjoys the time I've spent with my friends, this irked me. Freedom is nice, I guess; doing whatever you want to do is cool, I guess, but what if the thing you want to do when you're given the opportunity to do so is to share that freedom with someone else and spend some time with them? Suddenly, freedom isn't the same with solitude. To me, isolating yourself and calling it "freedom" is like locking yourself into a padded cell and pretending that you're enjoying your time staying there. I've yet to watch Evangelion, but holy fuck does this make me want to watch it, because this exact scene says exactly what I've wanted to say, but didn't know how to word at the time, and then some. We are in fact, social animals, the need for us to be with others is within our very nature. To basically isolate ourselves intentionally, and to be okay with that isolation, were to be the equivalent of losing our own sense of self and our own sense of identity and nature as humans. Plus, self-isolation fucking sucks.

This scene makes me think, just what did the creator of evangellion go through. This is some in depth wisdom that I think in my opinion is incredibly hard to come by. Especially visualising it. It's weird to me as someone who went into Eva blind with no bias. I find this ending awe inspiring, mainly because of what this scene is trying to show you. You are who you shape yourself as. The visual representations though show layers of other meaning alongside of it. Reminds me just how powerful the human mind can be in either a good or bad place, for something like this to take form.

I watched this in 2020 when I was 13, didn't completely appreciate it then, thought it was a great show but missed most of the subtext because I was going through puberty and Shinji-kun was my queer awakening so naturally I was just focused on how sexy he was, now a days, shit hits hard, I tear up watching and merely reading about it now, shit even *thinking* about it.
