Renovating in Tuscany - Taming Our Overgrown Garden & A Trip to Beaune France
Welcome back to Renovating in Tuscany!
In this episode, we’re balancing renovation updates with the joys (and occasional challenges) of being new parents in Italy. After a few disrupted nights of sleep, we started our weekend bright and early, grabbing our usual coffee and pastry before heading out to run some errands at the grocery store. We talk a bit about our transition into Italian routines and how different mornings are here compared to our old life in Los Angeles.
Our overgrown garden has become quite the project again. Weeds have taken over, and it’s time to reclaim the space. With the help of our trusted gardener, Roland, we discuss potential plans for privacy hedges and face the daunting costs of revamping our outdoor area. After some thought, we decide to give our current hedges a chance and cut them back, seeing if we can bring new life to them before investing in something bigger.
Next, we escape Tuscany for a bit and head to Beaune, France, where we indulge in a delicious brunch (finally something other than a quick coffee and pastry!). Afterward, we strolled through the town’s famous Saturday market. This vibrant market is packed with fresh produce, delicious cheeses, and regional specialties that we couldn’t resist picking up.
Beaune is known for its wines, so of course, we made a stop at a local wine shop, where we learned about the local wine cooperative and its offerings. We return back to our hotel and enjoy Robbie’s first pool day! His first time in the water brought smiles and laughs, and we enjoyed the experience as much as he did.
From garden renovations to gourmet markets, this episode captures the highs and challenges of life in Tuscany and beyond. Don’t miss out on our ongoing adventures-SUBSCRIBE and hit the notification bell to stay updated!

Saw you comment on another video and started following you here! Can you share a range of how much cost to buy the home and then range for renovating? Really considering the rural area of Italy!
Ciao Alex and Thank you for your comment! I must say I'm sorry I won't be able to give you solid numbers because it's hard to gauge renovation costs because every home is different as well as the state of the house. Our villa was abandoned for 50+ years but was in pretty good condition considering its a couple hundred meters from the sea. Also prices of homes are different depending on the area in which you want to live. Tuscany even rural houses are quite expensive but in other regions there are some great deals out there. I highly recommend just taking a look at Idealista.com and checking out some areas your interested in and the prices they are demanding. Sorry I couldn't give you solid figures but I think Idealista could be a wonderful place to start your search! - Rob
Ciao lovely people! Gosh so sorry to hear you were unwell but you're looking great again now, so all good! I lived in France for 10 years and never got to Beaune, although I did visit the general area and it's all so wonderful! So glad you had a lovely time and Robbie was so adorable in the pool! So glad he loves the water :D Just a question...are you still doing your online store? Just hadn't seen anything lately. Sending hugs from Sydney (spending the summer here) Marisa 🥰🤗😘💛
Robbie looked super cute in the pool!😇You definitely know how to find yummy food, loved the video!
Glad you got a chance to get away. The house (and garden) can wait, living and looking after yourselves is more important!
Good to see you guys! I loved watching Robbie in the pool. He is such a handsome boy!! Bev in Colorado ❤
Baume has the largest wine auction in the world. A lot of restauranteurs and collectors visit to make their annual purchases. A must stop along the Route des vins !
Love your videos! Thanks for sharing . Baby Robbie is growing so fast
Subsciber here from US.What a fabulous video with such great varied content.Robbie is beautiful.❤
Goodness, you all need some sleep. Glad you got away to a beautiful place. Oeuf Benedicte... oui I am glad you listened to your garden guy about the mature plantings. It would be years before you would see the results you wanted if you could keep them alive. Established plants are the best if they aren't ratty looking.
Luv those blue China plates at the restaurant!
Id love to visit that part of France & down to Arcachon.
It’s a Very beautiful area! I’d love to go back with Robbie and take him on the bike like we did Rooney 🥰😆 Highly recommend Ile de Re
I just found your channel. Love it. I'll be in Italy in 2 weeks time, staying 5 weeks. I'll be staying 1 night in Castiglioncello on my way to Chianni in mid October where my friend Marisa lives. I will miss her though as she's returning here to Australia early. I'll check out your other vlogs. I'm only a little obsessed with Italy. 😅🇮🇪🧡
That food is making me hungry😋The baby is precious 😇
Thank you! 😘💗 Haha! 🤤Italian seafood is so incredible!!
Well done!
🤗 thank you!! 🙏
What a beautiful summer!
Italians do summer right! 🏖️😊
Love your videos
Thanks so much for the support!!! It keeps us going when we hear kind words 💗💗💗 so much more coming soon!
Your blessed as Robbie is growing like a weed and looks very healthy. Very interesting pediatric diet recommendations but Robbie seems to be loving "real food" . My favorite Italian pines are the Martini pines maybe the umbrella pines are same?
Thank you 🙏😊Yes! 🥹 he’s growing lightning fast😭 his personality is so lovey, cuddly, and very determined 🤣🤣 he’s just so curious and wants to see and meet everyone! I’m so curious to hear what weaning is like in the U.S. That’s a great question! They very well could be the same type. I’ll ask our gardener the next time he pops by. We have to do some maintenance to them this fall/winter 😉
Thanks for introducing us to Agrinascente. It's under 2 hours from our home so we will take a trip there soon. Like you we've changed our diet considerably since moving to Italy and we've never been healthier! All the very best with your food choices. Renovating anywhere is not for the faint-hearted for sure. Do it well do it once is now our mantra! bw Maria e Rowan. PS. further local produce food store suggestions are always welcome.
Oh! How wonderful 🤗 it’s our pleasure and we’ll keep on looking out for gems like this! We love to try lots and lots of local foods and specialties- seriously bring a cooler!! 😝 It’s so incredible how pasta and local dishes can change from one town to the next. We eat FAR less processed foods and our health is significantly better than when we first moved here. I think Rob and I were just so burnt out and overly stressed from the Reno that we needed to focus on our little guy for a bit. Now we are looking at finishing and putting the quotes and budget into place.
Little Robbie will soon be expecting 48 month old matured bio Parmigiano Reggiano, estate grown bio ev olive oil and bio veg in his broth. As he should! It's wonderful the Italian doctors are recommending this approach to diet over ultra processed baby foods. The probiotics in the cheese will be wonderful for his gut heath. I grew up in an Italian family of 10 kids and we all ate similarly as babies and we all enjoyed excellent health. bw Maria
Isn’t it incredible how simple it all is?! Whenever we speak with older Italians, they always say that they were raised on food that they grew in their garden. We may not grow vegetables BUT I will definitely try to keep it simple and unprocessed 💪 I thought it was amazing how they suggested the olive oil and parmigiano! I never thought it could be about the probiotics 🤦♀️ he’ll be trying it all 😋 currently he’s trying to eat off my plate 🤣
😂😂 dont think Italian mums would freeze it...but its much more practical
🤣🤣🤣 yes!! Baby wrangling, work, and not a lot of sleep because of teething 🦷 something’s gotta give 😅
❤❤❤
🤗💗
Sitting up very late watching your lovely vlog! Robbie is doing sooo well and is such a little darling. He looks like he's going to love Italian food. Just a tip...I've never made vegetable broth using an iceberg lettuce but I would imagine that it would add lots of water to the broth, killing the flavours of the other vegetables. A standard broth is usually made with carrots, celery and other light greens like you used zucchini for example and even some fresh tomatoes. Onions and garlic are normally not added until they're about 8 months old. Don't worry if it tastes bland to you , as his taste buds aren't developed yet and he won't mind...it's the nutrients that count and you'll soon be able to add lots more flavours. Bone broth is also a fabulous addition for flavour and is amazing for strengthening their gut lining and many other benefits. I hope this gives you a few more ideas and I can't wait to visit Castiglioncello myself...have had it on my list for ages!!! A presto 🥰🤗😘💖
🥰🥰🥰🥰 thank you!! He’s such a love bug! My goodness!! He’s letting me know what he likes and what he absolutely does not like 🤣 yeah! I’ve never done it with the iceberg lettuce and I thought it was funny when they included it in the recipe🤔 I’m going to try to omit it from now on and see if that helps 😅 thanks so much for sharing those ideas! I’m going to be trying bone broth for sure. He loves taking a taste of chicken or meat but not eating it though. We have teeth coming in at the moment and it’s been a roller coaster of emotions for him. Hopefully they come through soon so he can have some relief 🤞🤞🤞Castiglioncello is lovely! I imagine it will be far less crowded very soon 👏 I’m dying to try the vegetarian restaurant that’s in Castello Pasquini. They have a lovely bar as well 🍹

How much did it cost you ?
good choice, on the other hand, Italians are among the people who live the longest in the world in terms of quality of life.
Oh and I LOVE anything cherry. Amrena gelato is a fave. Also I recently made a fresh cherry margarita - Rob should try it!
Amarena gelato is THE BEST! 🤤 A cherry margarita sounds absolutely delicious! I’ll have to share that with him 😉
SISTER GRACE!!
Hahaha she is so fun and sweet! So happy we met the sisters 🥰
Rome is my favourite place in italy
Oh!!! We looove Rome! The city’s beautiful colors, chaos and food all make for an unforgettable visit. 👏🇮🇹
Oh yeah... I renovated my much smaller house and it's def been stressful. And expensive. Very. There's always things you didn't plan for. The insidious part is that normally, you're in control of the big ticket items, but what really gets you is all the small stuff you didn't think of. It really does add up. I stopped when I hit my budget threshold so we don't have the custom cabinet in the main bathroom (yet), the wood fired oven that isn't essential has to wait, I built the wardrobe myself which is quite apparent, and I'm very busy with my shovel doing all the landscaping at snails pace 😂 It happens.
😩 ugh renovations! I’m sure we’ll LOVE it when it’s all over😅I’m in agreement with you 100%! It’s all the little things that add up and get ya. You’ll definitely get there and I’m sure you’ll appreciate all those new things even more when they do come. I know we certainly will! 🤣 I’m all for taking your time and doing what you can yourself. Keep up the amazing work 💪 and thanks for the support and kind words 💗
@@CasaArdorI think you both have done a great job tackling the “big” necessary items like the heating and cooling, gas/electric and the water items as the “base foundation”. These items would be so much harder to tackle after setting up your beautiful home. Also it was good to find out about the sewer issues and then the water leak caused by the broken gutter. The rest of the house will and is coming together beautifully as you have the budget and time. Also the great thing with time is that you can observe how you are living in the villa and are able to make changes before doing something that might cost you more later.😃👍🏼 I recently found your channel in my feed and have binged watched to catch up. 😃👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Sorry for your loss of Ronnie, I too have in the last couple of years lost two fury family members and miss them so much.❤️🐶🐾🐾When I came to your video where you announced about Ronnie my heart sank and some tears were shed😢. Our fury babies are as much a part of the family and bring so much joY❤️ Congratulations on the birth of your son🩵 Robbie, he is precious, many blessings as you both start this new chapter as parents to Robbie💙
You need to publish a few time-lapses video with before/after to attract more subscribers. You have good videos and it should be helpful for your channel. Cheers from Ukraine 💛💙
Thanks for the idea! 💡🤗
So good to see you three! Loved hearing little Robbie laugh❤……thank you for the video. I really enjoy the restaurants that you visit and seeing the food of the region
😘🥰 Robbie’s personality is really coming through now and his laugh is music to my ears! He loves meeting new people, playing with dad, and cuddling with mom. Thanks for your suggestions!! We will make sure to continue to do that and get out and explore more of Italy! 🇮🇹
So nice to hear the background story and how the community is very aware of what you have achieved - this community will be the village who can help you raise your family
❤️ we were totally blown away by the sisters’ interest in what we’ve been doing. They can’t believe the transformation. It really picked us up when we were feeling so frustrated
Wow! You guys are amazing, and I loved the video ❤
🤗😘thanks so much for the support!
I admire you both for all you have achieved....get quotes in writing always ..dont be too nice ....they work for you....not the other way round ...im saying this from years of experience

we’re definitely trying!!! 😅I used to be so focused on being productive each and every single day but now I’m learning to go with the flow. So glad we’re making time to make memories! 📸
@@CasaArdor perfetto 👌
It is good to see you all healthy and happy. Good luck with the photo shoots.
Thank you!! We are great, trying to get other important life things done while construction is on hold. Hopefully in the coming weeks we'll be able to enjoy more of Summer 😊
How exciting for you both and lots of juggling going on but it will be worthwhile! I can't wait to see your online store! You have such wonderful taste, so I'm sure it'll be gorgeous! Best wishes and happy "shooting" 🥰😍🤗😘
Thank you for the very sweet comment! Things are very exciting and we couldn't be happier with our products. Hopefully we'll be lunching in the coming weeks 🤩 ❤️
Another good video. I think the blending of local markets, shops and a slice of routine Tuscan life outside the home will broaden the interest and get you more views and subs. You guys deserve more views and to be monetized. I would reach out to Nikki Positiano on YT since she is in Tuscany now. I've noticed subs go way up after getting exposure and like in the genre. I have travelled extensively throughout Italy and Europe. The area you choose is awesome for IMHO. I cant wait to see baby old enough to ride the electric toy cars in that beachfront park in South of Livorno.
What town did you stop for lunch. The views were amazing!! So happy you are living forward w your products. Sooo excited for you. What a fun rich Italian life🎉. - #blessed
That town was quaint but cute, the name is Artimino, it really had some beautiful views 🤩 It as been a lot of hard work but we are sooo happy with the outcome. We absolutely cannot wait to share more soon 😍❤️
I totaly get you on workmen on renovations.ive lived here 40 years from uk
Omg you know exactly what I’m talking about!! You must be tough! 🤣 I’ve definitely become resilient to bumps in the road like never before but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It makes the highs all that much better
@@CasaArdor i know you are both very smart but..... dont pay up front ....get in writing what they are being paid for and dont fall for the '" he's a really nice guy""....at the end of the job 'il saldo' ....
This resonates with me too 🤦🏻♀️ Been renovating a “casale” in Tuscany since 2019. We paid the first contractor upfront (because we were told that’s the way it’s done here) and that didn’t end well. 2nd contractor tripled the original quote with the “justified” excuse of Covid and Ukraine war. Now, because we can’t trust anyone anymore and they practically dried our funds, we’re trying to do most of the stuff ourselves while repeating to myself - when the going gets tough, the tough gets going 😅 You’ve done a lot and I admire you. Hang in there and keep enjoying the journey 😉 Wishing you all the very best.
Appreciate your honesty over the difficulties with your workers, and how you're taking a minute to reasses and go over the budget. Must be frustrating but onwards! P.S. Those MEAAAAAAATS!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think Robbie was drooling in the background 🤤impromptu lunches are the best in Tuscany! Uff 🫠it’s rough and frustrating but I have faith that everything will get resolved. We’re always looking at the bright side-having this break allows us to free our minds and enjoy the beautiful summer!
Oh those first two years of a renovation!!! You are so right to prioritize. Bottom line is you were lucky to get so much done before Robbie was born which allowed for you to have what you absolutely need right now. Meanwhile look how much little dude has grown in such a short time. I'm like does he look like Dad, does he look like Mom🤔 either way he's one cutey and Dad is having the best time with his new little buddy. Even with the pressures it all looks like so much fun! ... And gosh is that countryside beautiful...a vacation scene everyday! Productive few weeks, bravo! ♥️🇨🇦
Oh the pain 😭 Sometimes it feels like we’re moving at a snails pace BUT I have to say, we are very comfortable living on the bottom floor in the meantime! New windows, air conditioning, a new functioning kitchen and lots of space is like heaven ✨ especially compared to before 🤣 We are having the time of our lives these days thanks to our little guy. He’s almost tripled since he was born! 😳 Something can go wrong (like extra costs) but seeing him giggling and smiling puts it all into perspective 💗 sending you a big hug from all of us!!
Enjoyed this great tour you gave to your family! Baby robnie is adorable
🥹💗 thank you! It’s amazing how much love and happiness a baby brings! We had a blast showing our family around- what a magical time! ✨
