Fire! Fire! Mamod fire engine
Переглядів 249Рік тому
I bought a model Mamod fire engine and decided that as a 'mini' project I would make a few modifications such that it might more closely represent a prototype circa 1914-1920.

This is the first of a two part vid where I hope to modify a mamod model fire engine to be a little more like a Dennis Motor Fire Engine of 1914 vintage.

There are a number of these pumps in Lincolnshire UK near where I live and I thought it would be interesting to make a version. My version however will be operated by a static steam engine not an electric motor (as the prototypes around here are).

There are no mistakes, just happy accidents. Nice work, looking forward to the continuation of this.
I have one of those thk you for sharing 👍
many thanks
Edwin Even though i do not leave a comment i always give your videos a thumb up. I love what you do as i'm building myself a VULCAN beam engine from scratch. Keep on the good work. Have a good 2025 year. Bfn. Olivier.
Many thanks Oliver, keep up the good work. I am only vaguely familiar with Vulcan and will check it out, Ed
Good work Edwin and well saved! And it is of interest! Well done for getting over 1000 subs!
Thank you very much Ben. Confess I do not pay attention to how many subscribers I have. I started this channel to remind myself of what I have done and what I have still to do. Memory has never been good and gets worse as I approach 78th birthday. LOL
@edwinwhite933 fair enough. Well done all the same.
Looking good Ed, interesting build
Thanks 👍, proving a bit more challenging than I expected but i'm getting there. Today I start on the eccentric sheaves for valve gear.
Great job as always and fantastic progress. From a viewers point of view, 'mistakes' (inevitable in the real world) and then the working out of how to get out of trouble are a really interesting part. So I'm glad you left it all in. This is just one of the features that makes your channel so interesting. Thanks!
Thank you very much! I like to think I do own up to the plethora of mistakes I make in life as well as model engineering. As I get older you might think I would make fewer mistakes, but it doesn't seem to work that way. LOL
Simply beautiful. One day I will attempt to build one
Have a go, but I may suggest something a bit simpler. The drawings for this engine I'm finding a bit of a nightmare. If this is going to be your first model I think you might struggle. I am having to draw on a lot of experience to interpret the drawings.
Where do you get all these blueprints?
A J Reeves, email sales@ajreeves.com tel 01530 272338 (UK) I dealt with a lady called Kate who was very helpful
There is a museum train of a class b, lima locomotive in atikokan, on, Canada. I've loved it since I was a child. Always loved the engineering behind it
Many thanks for info. Unfortunately I don't think I will have the opportunity to visit Canada
Love the improvements especially the chain drive. The rubber tires are the thing if you want to keep the toy without broken pieces.Great video and thanks for the info😊
Good call!
Absolutely delightful - great job!
Many thanks! Stuart models make some great castings in my view
Going together nicely!
Now you have drawn our attention to the blood on the drawings we are going to have to ask.... Good work!
Ha ha, not unusual for me to leak the red stuff when I am in the workshop. I know better but can't break my habit of running my finger over the work when I take it off the machine. Unsurprisingly the edges are often razor sharp. I only realise what I have done when the red appears - I rarely feel any pain until about 10 mins later!!
@@edwinwhite933 Ah.... Yes. we all do things like that!
Nice work Edwin. Oddly inconvenient positioning of the drain cock hole.
Absolutely. I followed the drawing but wish I had thought a little more about the position befor I drilled and tapped. Still not difficult to sort out, but as yet I haven't done it
Thanks for that Ed. Interesting video as always and great progress on the build. Hope the wound is healing!
Looks great Ed, looking forward to seeing it completed, have a great Xmas.
Thanks, you too!
Love the home made steady! Great idea. The lack of a valve nut for adjusting seems odd, but presumably there is adjustment elsewhere in the valve rod arrangement. Great progress!
I think the only adjustment will be on the valve knuckle end which I have not made as yet. Unusual, but I think it will be ok. Many thanks
Nice job in the flywheel. I have the Lady Stephanie which has a similar shaped crank arm. I'm going to simplify mine, so hats off to you for having a go. Looks good enough to me.
Thanks 👍
Where did i get my appetite for pouring over technical problems? 😂 good video 😊
I blame genetics xxx
@edwinwhite933 I'm literally just strolling down the seafront muttering to myself about a data problem right now 😂
the valve timing could be interesting, If you have room for an elbow you could always pipe it away and put a cock on the end of the pipe.
Many thanks for the suggestion. I haven't quite decided and will sort out the drain cock when the cylinder is mounted
Impressive Ed. I love the 'steady' at 1min 30secs. Great thinking!
The steady is a useful addition and was worth making. It is much slimmer than proprietary versions which is handy.
Looking great. Nice work sir. I really struggled with boring out the cylinder on the engine I’m working on at the moment. It’s only my second engine. Very interesting to see someone else do it.
Depending upon the size of the bore, boring out cylinders is always a bit nerve racking. The smaller the bore and the longer it is, the more tricky it can be in my view to avoid tapering the bore. I'm sure you will achieve, slow and steady and keep checking is the motto!
looks like that a lot of milling ahead of you. Glad to see that you find a fascinating project for yourself . please share with us a progress. thank you Ed
Thanks, will do! We have builders in doing some work on the house so progress on the engine is slow cos of the chaos. You are spot on however with the milling. I am working on the cylinder and steam chest etc. I had forgotten how much work is involved. LOL. ps the drawings are really old (1974) and I am struggling with some of them, but will get there.
Nice job Mr W. I have a Chingleese lathe and mill. The faceplate has bolt holes that are ok for M18... not the easiest to use. It's the model engineer that has to have cunning ways to hold . mount. Cut parts that most engineers and machinists would cry into their CNC's. this looks to be a nice build. stay well.
In my experience figuring out how to hold things is one of the most time consuming jobs, often accompanied by grinding a special tool to complete the part. Many thanks for your kind words.
I like it good job. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Edwin ,your too hard on yourself, not the easiest parts to machine them,I,s be pretty happy with that outcome !!!! Look forward to the next instalment . Well do e mate
Many thanks. Now working on the cylinder. Will post further vid when there is some useful progress. Having recently moved I can't find anything in the new workshop. LOL
Very nice work sir. Great setups. I imagine it was a challenge. Good job
Yes it was, but I got there and am reasonably happy with the result. Next job the cylinder.
Sometimes "good enough", is good enough! Thank you for sharing this project with us.
So true! I think a key attribute is when to say 'stop' before everything goes pear shaped. LOL
Well done work Ed. Looking forward to more instalments of this engine
Many thanks Mark. Having recently moved house I am struggling to find my equipment, but this build is part of me getting to remember where I put everything. LOL
Good work Edwin.
Many thanks Ben and may I say I enjoy your channel
@@edwinwhite933 You are very kind! I will be going to the Midlans Model Engineering exhibition on Friday. Are you going?
Sadly not Ben, but hope you have a great time
@@edwinwhite933 I will do my best!
I like this design because it hides the cross slide scale neatly under the slide. No junk hanging off to the side or rear. Unfortunately, the only "milling machine" Perhaps I can get a spare cross slide and cut it with the with my Rodney milling attachment.
A milling machine to cut the slot in the underside of the cross slide is essential in my view. Not a difficult job just needs a bit of care. My cheapo warco mill managed it with ease. thanks for your comment
If you don't have a separate mill then I see your difficulty with the Rodney. Can a mate do the cross slide for you?
Lovely video Ed
Many thanks!
Ah man. You know how to do things. Lovely trains
Thank you very much!
Sir how you made that molded or machining that parts of the Engine.
I am a self taught model engineer and have been machining for a long time. The unmachined castings for this engine were bought from a trade stand a long time ago. It was a most interesting engine to machine and fabricate and I made a few modifications using a very old copy of a book used to train marine engineer officers about 1900. I have no connection with the sea or any great knowledge of boats however. When I made this engine I did not have much camera equipment so my records are vague.
@@edwinwhite933 sir thank you very much for your reply. These words show how dedicated u are. U are a great and big salute from my side. Please spread ur knowledge for future generations.
Many thanks for your kind words. I will do my best to keep up the utube vids
It is a shame Mamod is not more. I liked their models.
Totally agree. They were simple 'toys' but very reliable and captured the essence of steam in an affordable way. A sad loss
Excellent video. Interesting the box shows a different - and to my knowledge - never seen design.
Thank you very much! I was not aware of that. I picked the model up a long time ago I think at a steam rally. It had very little running and the boiler in particular is very well built.
Are you willing to sell your Aster Shay, I love Shay
As prev response sorry no the engine is not for sale. Best wishes.
Are you willing to sell?
Sorry this is one of my favourite locos and like you I have an affection for logging locomotives so have no intention of selling. Thank you for your interest.
Looking good Ed. Well done with the video
Glad you enjoyed it. I have now test run a couple of trains and no derails so far. Will prob do more testing and then post a new vid of the track in action.
😂 you need a pond 😂😂😂 and a hobby mate
No more ponds for me. It does not do the trains any good at all when (not if) they fall in. LOL
Mince pies are not just for Xmas!
Sorry for slow reply. I Don't turn the computer on very often. So true re mince pies. xx
