The Roving Blade - Bob Dylan - Live in Belfast - 19th June 1998.
This traditional folk song (Roud 490) has been performed by Bob Dylan four times. The first was in 1992 and the last, a complete surprise, was in 2024. This performance in Belfast was his second performance of the song. The song is known by many different names including The Newry Highwayman, In Newlyn Town, The Wild and Wicked Youth and the Bold and Undaunted Youth. In the earliest version traced so far it was called The Dublin Baker (published in a chapbook dating from about 1780). Derek Barker, in his excellent book, The songs he didn't write. Bob Dylan under the Influence, suggests the version by Paul Brady as Dylan's most likely source.

Wild Mountain Thyme - Bob Dylan - live in Cincinnati, 22nd June 1988.

A song that was in Bob Dylan’s repertoire as early as 1961 and featured in both legs of the Rolling Thunder Review tours of 1975-6, is here given its final performance by him to date. Having entered into the oral tradition, it is regarded as a traditional song (Roud 541). The version sung here is as composed by Francis McPeake, of the well-known musical McPeake family of Belfast, in the early 1...

This is the only known performance by Bob Dylan of this traditional song (Roud 262) which goes by various names including My Parents Raised me Tenderly, and The Wealthy Squire. It appears to have started life as a printed broadside ballad in 19th century England but several versions were collected in the United States in the early years of the 20th century. There is some debate regarding where ...

This performance of the traditional song, House of the rising sun (Roud 6393) is something of a curiosity; for just a couple of days earlier he had been in the studio recording a very different arrangement (the one he infamously 'stole' from Dave Van Ronk) for his debut album, 'Bob Dylan'. Dylan seems to be saying prior to starting singing, that he doesn't play it any more.

Dylan recorded this traditional song (Roud 5478), solo acoustic, in the summer of 1992 for his "Good as I been to you" album. The song got its live debut in Dublin on 5th February 1993 and was then played at all six shows in Hammersmith. In all Dylan and his band played it 31 times in 1993. This Australian convict ballad dates back, at least, to 1907 and could date back to the early 19th centur...

The only known performance by Dylan of this traditional song (Roud 11667), most associated with and often attributed to, Bessie Smith, who recorded it in 1927. Often thought to relate to the flooding of the Mississippi River in 1927, it more probably concerns the flooding of the Cumberland River in Nashville in 1926. Dylan introduced it at this concert with “Here’s a song just about everybody k...

Dylan’s first performance of this traditional song (Roud 54 / Child 84) in seven years. It would become a fairly regular feature in his set over the next three years with 57 performances, 1988-1991. Dylan used more or less the same lyrics in these but with slight changes here and there. Here he sings “her name was known everywhere” rather than his usual “her name was known both far and near”. D...

Dylan had recorded this traditional song (Roud 268) earlier in the year for his World Gone Wrong album (solo acoustic). This is one of only two live performances by Dylan (augmented by his band), both at the Supper Club, New York during the late shows in November 1993 . On the sleeve notes for World Gone Wrong, Dylan says he learnt the song from Tom Paley. He was no doubt also familiar with oth...

This traditional song (Roud 3416) goes by a number of different names including Hang me, oh hang me. Dylan sang a version in the BBC television play, Madhouse on Castle Street in 1962 perhaps based on Dave Van Ronk's version. The version heard here, however, owes more to the Grateful Dead's version in turn based on the recording by Grandpa Jones made in 1943. Dylan introduced the song into his ...

One of only six performances (all in 1992) of this traditional song (Roud 4854). The earliest recording of the song was by Charlie Poole & the North Carolina Ramblers in 1925. Dylan most probably learned it from the New Lost City Ramblers version recorded in 1958.

Dylan had recorded a solo acoustic version of this traditional song (Roud 22444) earlier in the year for his World Gone Wrong album. He has performed it just three times (backed by his band) in concert all at the dates at the Supper Club, 16th-17th November 1993. The earliest recording of the song appears to be that by Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1926 under the title Broke and Hungry.

Dylan's only performance of this traditional song (Roud 18908), helped out by Jim James and Jeff Tweedy on acoustic guitars and backing vocals in addition to Dylan's regular band members. John Lomax recorded a version of the song from the Travis family of Livingston, Alabama in 1937 but it is most closely associated with and popularised by the Reverend Gary Davis.

Though truncated, sadly - a beautiful rendition of this ancient British Ballad (Roud 8; Child 10) dating from the mid seventeenth century at least. It may in part, have provided inspiration for his own composition, Percy's Song.

My first of many Bob's concerts. I was right under the mike. His head was covered the whole show. He played the next night also, again we were right under the mike. We met him outside the Hammersmith Odeom in London Feb 1990, where he was playing for six sold out shows. Honestly, God's Truth, we spotted him getting out of a car, his hood was up, this is what drew us to see and watching him (the hood, because of this concert here in dublin). He got out of the car and walked into the concert with Sally Kirkland, the actress. We approached him before he entered, Sally was telling us not to draw a crowd and shuing us away, I swear on my life, he gave me a hug signed my concert programme and made one 20yr kid very, very happy. I'm 54 now, and still extremely happy with this Amazing memory and chance meeting with my go to guy Bob Dylan 🙏 True stoy.

Come all you maids, both near and far, and listen to my ditty; ’Twas near Gravesend there lived a maid, she was both neat and pretty. Her true love he was pressed away and drowned in some foreign sea, Which caused this fair maid for to say, “I’ll be a rambling sailor.” With jacket blue and trousers white, just like a sailor neat and tight, The sea it was the heart’s delight of the female rambling sailor. From stem to stern she freely goes; she braves all dangers, fears no foes, But soon you shall hear of the overthrow of the female rambling sailor. Though never did her courage fail, ’twas stormy seas and wintry gale O’er this fair maiden did prevail, this female rambling sailor. From stem-to stern she freely went, where oft-times she’d been many; Her hand did slip and down she fell; she calmly bade this world farewell. When her lily-white breast in sight it came, it appeared to be a female’s frame; Rebecca Young it was the name of the female rambling sailor. May the willows wave around her grave and ’round the laurels planted, May the roses sweet grow at the feet of the one who was undaunted. So, come all you maids, both near and far, And listen to my story; Her body is anchored in the ground, Let’s hope her soul’s in glory. On the river Thames she’s known real well, No sailor there could her excel; One tear let fall as a last farewell to the female rambling sailor.
