Hello you lot.
I'm Barry, a nostalgic model maker.
I started with an Airfix Lightning kit that I fumbled together aged 6. I've been persuading bits of plastic to resemble box art on and off ever since.
I'm no expert, not up on the latest techniques, not great at research and my eyes are getting knackered, but I've always loved the hobby.
Over the last few years, I've somehow acquired a small stash of kits that mean something to me, hence the nostalgic bit.
Some I have fond memories of making a long time ago, such as the 1/24th Harrier my dad helped me with. Some have links to family, like the Ark Royal, which my grandad served on. All sorts of things, but I'll explain more in each video.
I hope you like my ramblings and feel free to plop a comment in the appropriate area.

My other grandfather's WW2 medal
My Dad's Dad, Joseph, was a medic during the first war, so when WW2 came along, he volunteered as a medic in the ARP in Croydon, Surrey.
WW1 medals aren't available, as the records were destroyed, so I enquired about his entitlement for awards made to the ARP.
Here is his Defence Medal 1939-1945, 79 years late.

A lovely kit, with only one flaw. It was a pleasure to build, the fit was great, but the wings could be moulded better. Not a major issue though and it didn't put me off.

My Grandad, we called him Poppy, served in the RAF in the 1920s then again at the outbreak of WW2. He initially was onboard the HMS Ark Royal at the start of the war, but quickly got posted to the far east and Africa. He rose steadily through the ranks to end the war as a Flight Sergeant. I wondered what happened to any medals he might have had, but it turned out he was never given them. The ve...

The AEW version is a completely different aircraft altogether, and I can't see Airfix producing it, although Sword have released the AEW 1/48 scale version, no where near as detailed as the Airfix kit though
I have this and the bi-plane set I don't have the wing angle set but it works out great.
Re, the Airacobra, the box may say 1986,but the kit dates back to the 1960’s and yes, Airfix are still selling it.
Having really enjoyed building the new version of the 1:24 Spitfire a couple of winters ago, I bought this to while away the dark nights this year. I knew it was a “legacy” kit, but the quality of the moulding, the components, the fit… everything, is really poor. Building this is turning into a chore, not a pleasure. How Airfix have the nerve to charge the same price for this as for the Spitfire is beyond me. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I wish they did aircraft canopies the same as the glass is done on this. One piece for glass, one piece for frame work. Damn sight easier to paint.
what glue is in the little bottle
@@hannibal884 it is Tamiya Extra Thin.
My uncle(God rest his soul) bought me this kit and I made a right mess of it, one day I'd like to build it in memory of him!!
I've just found this video after starting this kit on Tuesday (3/09/24) I've gone for a 'what if' Fleet Air Arm vibe, gun pods, missiles and depth charges out of the clam shell, got some decals on the way, dunno if it will be up to your standard, but I'm having a go. And I've subscribed on the back of this episode.
Cheers Nigel!
As this wanders about in my head, would it be feasible/beneficial to make a splitter that runs all the way down the front out of cards stock?
@@scurvy8895 I'd be interested to see that.
I think what is throwing off your perception of the part count is , there’s what 10 or 15 parts in the rotors 😂
nice build! I've had one of theses come via ebay today, it has been part started with the pilot, seat, instrument panel and yoke all already glued in, unpainted! while watching your video I dry fitted the two halves of mine, and the pilot and seat are way over to the right, almost looks like a side by side arrangement, also mine came without any instruction sheet, so you've helped me out on that score with those nice close up of your instructions, finally, I am going to use a set of those kora trnsfers too, to make mine represent an AR 196 from the tirpitz, because I have a 1/350 tamiya tirpitz kit, that has about four 196's in that scale, so I did want to build a "full size" version of one!
@@philsmodelmaking2260 nice one Phil. Enjoy the build!
Very nice build. Good work.😊
@@PiperStart thank you!
Well, there's a coincidence! My paternal grandfather was in the R.A.M.C. in WWI too. (Still got his thermometer). He'd been in the 2nd Boer war before that. Somewhere, I have a carved wooden cross mounted on a string of carved wooden beads which was given to him by one of the African locals at some point. All the medals I've got are stored in a fancy tobacco tin that was given to the troops for Christmas 1914.
@johnhughes2653 spooky! I know very little about his service in WW1 but he was a civvy by 1916, so somehow he was discharged. Shame there's no records. All I have is a photo of him and many others posing outside what might be St Thomas' hospital in London. Nice that you've got your grandad's things after so long.
David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Tuesday, 6 August, 2024) I fondly remember as a boy building numerous Airfix kits. I had not quite understood why some of the smaller parts felt so crude of design or molding; and why the entire vehicle had felt so poorly detailed overall. So seeing these, whilst quite commonplace of purpose, is such a delight for me. A question, though: is this an Army truck (lorry?). Would the RAF have employed any to serve upon an airfield? Perhaps another version with a tank of petrol? Or another open vehicle to bring forth a troop of aircraft crew members? A third functioning as an ambulance?
@user-ni2zo5zo3c Hi David. It's basically the same as the K2, which was famously an ambulance but was also used as a fire engine and I'm sure there were various other uses too. If you have a Google I'm sure you'll find lots of photos. Cheers, Barry
@@nostalgicplastic4323 ,thanks, Barry.
I had that as a kid. It was in that awful silver plastic that no paint would adhere to. What's it like now?
@@timwingham8952 I wasn't impressed.

Another great video and a very nice looking kit!
@stevemercer952 cheers Steve!
Very nearly the first kit I ever built - but I picked the Supermarine Walrus instead. I have built a couple since - but as 'Thunderbirds' style 'Heli-jets' - they were used as such on the show, albeit heavily modified. Not a bad kit as such, but that two part transparency for the cockpit is horrible. Not bad with say, Tamiya Extra Thin cement, but a nightmare with the gloopy stuff we had in the past. It's a sod to fit using PVA glue even. I wish Airfix had retooled those parts.
Great to see this , in my 60s and remember building this made such a mess of it but this brings back such good memories . Cheers keep your vids coming big fan from NZ👍🇳🇿
Cheers Mike!
Nice unboxing video and its done me a big favour to be honest, because Im half way through building a 1996 boxing of this kit which used the 1959 tooling..... Let me just say that cockpit.... S H O C K I N G !!! Absolitely no detail apart from a bulging door on each half 😢 . I was considering buying the new vintage classics version just for a replacement cockpit if they had re-engineered the clear part tooling, but it appears not. Oh well, I best just press on with the cockpit glazing from the 1996 boxing and you've saved me £15.99. Cheers mate. 👍 By the way, the 3 side windows in my 1996 boxing all went into place without any issue. I think the only bonus for you when you build it will be the more modern plastic, because Ive found my version has very brittle plastic sprues, which have resulted in a couple of repairs during my build. Best of luck with your build though. 👍
no wonder I made a mess of it 50 years ago as a 10 year old thinks I binned it !
I was only thinking the other day I'd love to make one of these again. Great review!

Tamiya LP clear. Good luck with the rear canopy and pretty much any of the kit. It will test you
Hi Barry, I am hoping to get this kit next month, when my son comes to visit me from New Zealand, as I now reside in Melbourne Australia, I will be watching this build very closely, I have the KT ambulance to build, and a sack of spuds is almost the same as a sack of coal, I have just subscribed to your channel, as I thought I was already subscribed, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
@lesthiele4921 Hi Les, it's a great kit and you can play around with it. Cheers from a very wet Durham
This build took way to long ki.nd of a slow build I went else where it was too long got tired and left
I'm just getting near the end of building one of these. These cylinders are bugger to do. Not a bad kit

Lovely model Barry. Can't wait to make a start on mine!
I'm wondering if the wings have distorted after coming out of the mould. The outer surface is slightly larger than the inner surface and therefore shrinks more, which tends to flatten the profile of the wing?
@johnhughes2653 not sure. Just looks wrong. If I'd noticed I'd have tried sanding but I'm not too worried. It was a nice one, I did your wire idea, but I chose some that was a bit bendy. Next time....
Exactly...my Dad and I made this in the 70s....Dad was very meticulous and it took weeks to make. I insisted on twin matra rocket launchers and gun pods...hand painted...loved it. Great memories ❤
Very nice, thanks for sharing this!
Got mine today plus the decal sheet to create the version that carries my late father’s name through donation. Before I start I have airbrushing set up but wanted to ask all the best way to thin the supplied paint and ratio . I have tamiya thinner or is it just better to brush paint. Loving the new coloured instructions
Wow, that's something to be proud of! There are many who can prescribe a thinner but I use Vallejo Flow Improver as thinners for acrylics. I've not tried airbrushing the little pots though.
@@nostalgicplastic4323 thanks for your reply and exactly what I was considering the paint pot’s difficulty to measure unless I use a dropper I guess
@@rogerprice7704 got a big bag of droppers from amazon, very cheap.
Can you please make a video once you have had them mounted.
Will do. I've sent them off, hopefully won't be long.
I used a Humbrol orange rattle can on the Severn and it worked perfectly. It was years ago but likely over a Halford's grey primer. I have an old Citadel orange which I recall was also good but was just too light for the RNLI shade. The Severn was worth persevering with as in the end it looks amazing. I think the superstructure was designed to lift off to show that detailed interior, but it was too tight a fit so I ended up sanding down the inside. But I agree, it depends how much you want to build it.
I've seen other people's finished Severn and they can look great, but I just had enough. Shame as I like the subject but I wasn't enjoying it anymore.
Perhaps an idea for painting the orange onto the kit.... How about having a white or yellow undercoat first, which should hopefully make the orange go on easier and make it pop more and perhaps less coats?
Hi Simon. I used a white primer for the orange but I got the same as I always get with humbrol, it's just too watery. My airbrush doesn't have an adjustment for air pressure, so I can't not thin the paint. Not tried a yellow primer though, any recommendations? Cheers
@@nostalgicplastic4323 sorry mate, although I purchase the mini airbrush you recommended ages ago...Ive still not used it as Im still waiting to alter my spare room, so I still only use hairy sticks Im afraid. Ive used a rattle can of humbrol matt white for a Gulf War Tornado, but that needed 3 coats of desert pink before the white streaks and brush marks finally went. Begining to wonder if I should have used grey primer for that instead. Ive got another one to build so might try grey primer instead. However, using grey primer might make the orange on the lifeboat too dark.
@@simonjohn8904 yep, grey was even harder to cover. I'll have a look for a yellow primer, ta for the idea.
@@nostalgicplastic4323 fingers crossed for you then mate. Hope the yellow suggestion works. 🙏
Just got mine today. Wanted to get from my local (ish to Middlesbrough) Shannon station at whitby, but they aren't selling it. Ended up visiting the model centre on the way home as they had stock for £17.99. I had hoped to have a good shop there for other kits as well, based on their website stock, but it turns out it's a small shop filled mainly with trains on display. Wasn't sure if I got extra paints or not as I had 10 pots. Now seeing your unboxing I see I have the same amount, but I have no 11 which isn't listed as being needed. Just wanted to check what paints others got. Mine were 11 15 18x2 27x2 33x2 34 56
11 is silver, so probably aerials or such like. Might be a printing error. Most folk don't use the little pots and I've only used tiny dabs of them in the past, so you might want to get some better ones. But hey, up to you, they're probably OK, I'm just going by others opinions.
Same here no.11 not shown but hey ho can probably find a use for it somewhere
It's a lovely looking kit! Mine came today; very impressive - slide moulding for the cabin piece as well; that doesn't come cheap to make! Airfix went all-in with this one, it seems; especially with the additional decal sheet...nice to see! 😃 Great review, and I look forward to seeing your build, and doing my own too! 👍
Cheers Steve
I like the kit i just wish they go back to the old plastic sprues ☹️the bits keep breaking off.
A good buy if you have orange paint left over from the Bond Bug. (Where else would you ever use it, other than the General Lee?)
Might try a different brand, humbrol just not very good.
@@nostalgicplastic4323 I find Humbrol paints tend to be very grainy, no matter how much shaking & stirring you do.
The blue/grey colours are because this is a 1954 107 pick up, the first year they made a long wheelbase model, the previous were 80” and later 82”. The factory colours were grey body and RAF blue chassis and wheels or all RAF blue. Body cappings are as you say, zinc plated. 1959 they went to a black chassis as per all the SWB models for the last eight years or so, and bronze green was added as a body colour. Seats were available in black, grey or RAF blue options.
I would'nt be surprised if Airfix do the MERT version for their 2025 release list. 👍
Fingers crossed. This one can be the practice run.
Masking suggestion: Put a strip of masking tape on the inside of the sides to block the windows before sticking the two sides together. Make it long enough to stick out the back door and it should be simple to remove after the outside painting is done.
Another top tip!
Awesome review Baz...be a few weeks before we get it here in Ireland...defo going to get it when t is available here@nostalgicplastic4323
@jaws848 it does look really nice. I hope you like it, when it gets there...
I thought that it would be bigger too, I guess it was just a very small aircraft in real life .
I've saved the old radio aerial wire of a dead stereo system for doing thing like radio antennae and some rigging. Just carefully strip off the insulation and you will find some VERY fine wires inside.
Ooh, good idea. I'll rummage.

Can I have that keyring??
Of course babes!
Is the Modeling Club only for the British, or can anyone in the world join? If not, I would remind Airfix it's the 21st century.
Anyone can join. Have a look at their website. It's only £15 but it's extra for the rest box stuff. You get 10% off kits, so depends how many you buy. Other good stuff too.
I only got rid of one of those Corgi E-types a few years ago! When I joined the Airfix Modellers Club, Dick Emery was the president, which just shows how long ago it was.
Hiya John! That's him, "ooh you are awful! but I like you". Buster comic. Happy days.
Completley piontless club to anyone living outside the U.K.
@jaws848 is it? Still get the discount don't you?
@nostalgicplastic4323 yes but when you add in postage costs and customs charges (uk now being outside the e.u) it would be cheaper to buy them over the counter....plus we only get the magazine as a downloadable pdf so what if i want a psyichal copy of the magazine and i dont have a printer..
@jaws848 shame. I guess they could do everything but the kit for a reasonable cost. Suppose postage and customs makes it difficult.
