I am a novice trying to restore classic cars - I love it. This channel is a vlog rather than a how to so I just take you through the work I am doing, showing my mistakes as well as successes. This is not a glossy channel - these are not professional videos and I am not a gifted restorer.
Just enjoy.
Just enjoy.

NC 500 in a Triumph Stag
Переглядів 7523 місяці тому
The NC500 is an iconic route around the North Coast of Scotland, measuring roughly 100 miles. I've never done it and John had never done it. So why not do it in a Triumph Stag? As this trip shows, there is no reason. Please support the channel and visit my shop: henrys-garage.myspreadshop.co.uk #stag #triumphstag #nc500

Ford Focus mk 2 Stuck Fuel Lid
Переглядів 9256 місяців тому
I was about to fill up a nearly empty fuel tank but I couldn't get the lid open. I tried locking and unlocking the doors, starting engine. Nothing worked. Went to local Ford dealer and big suck of breath and I would have to book it in. So I took it home and fixed it Please support the channel and visit my shop: henrys-garage.myspreadshop.co.uk #ford #focus #mk2 #fuellid

Sorry, not for me
Ol
Glad to see you're still sticking with ypur TR7 projects, Henry. Can't wait to see them when they're done, no matter how long it takes you. I onow it'll be worth it! Great little car that, sadly, i was too young to have/drive at the time they were on the road! Keep it up! 😊
Thanks Steve, I will get back to it. Just being rather lazy at the moment
OK, thanks anyway.... I'm just thinking of upgrading mine.
Always worth upgrading
Can you please tell me what make of brake master cylinder was re-fitted to the car? Thanks a lot.
Sorry mate, I’ve sold the car now and I don’t remember. I probably bought it from MG hive or midland Classic Car
Most importantly meant to say thanks so much for your video.... I can learn so much while restoring my 8.
The best video talking to the highway use of the MGB, good and bad. Kind of you good sir.
It was really all just a bit of fun. The MBG is a super fun car to drive
The only thing I did differently was to assemble all of the parts on the car instead of preassembling. You've really gone over the top with cleaning and paint with the crossmember still on the car, Bravo
I should have taken it off
Originally from Paisley?
I don't know that I'm afraid
Thanks Henry, never seen dampers serviced. Fortunately, mine seem sufficient
Normally they just need a top up but good to know they can be serviced
I like your logo. I'm about to change my '80's bushings to poly, but with engine out, I read that a restraint under the floor jack and over the shock can provide the necessary influence to undo the control arms and free the spring, any thoughts?
I’ve only done it with the engine in but I guess with a strap that you can loosen slowly to remove spring force slowly you will be ok
Nice one Henry.
Thanks Chris
Thank you for this series. I wish this episode had been around when I first bought my tr7.
Glad it was helpful
Hi Henry, nice to see you back on the 7. Appreciate the efforts etc being in Scotland I'd expect some delay between takes, but always worth watching. Hope you & yours are well.
All good thanks Chris. It is good to be back on the car
Where have you been Henry, back from your holidays?
A bit of holiday, a bit of less pleasant stuff and a lot of laziness
I would renew the themostat and put the tester in expansion bottle it needs to be air tight seal it mesure rxhaust gasses in the coolant
Yeah, I did get an airtight seal although not sure it was in this video . I think it was a follow up video I did
Buy a new rad that’s only a temp fix 😩😊
Maybe at some point but I’ll continue with what I’ve got for now
Your mpg cost are out by a factor of 10 ! lol.. its only £1400-1500 to do 6000 miles at 25mpg. assuming fuel is 1.35 a litre !! :D .. not to mention classic insurance is very cheap.. and devaluation is 0% on the MGB.. on the BMW its probably 5%+ a year ? btw, good video !
Please, there is so much wrong with video I could do a longer video of corrections. But it was a bit of fun and the MGB is a better car in the right place
Great vid. I had had the auto in mine in and out many times from 93 to 2004, as was a high mileage car then (from 93 to 99 my only car) but converted the car to manual, and usually did the auto from underneath/using a pit. Installed the manual in 2004 ish, again using pit, but don't have pit anymore. Had engine out about 8 years ago, had manual box and clutch off then. Have a noise at front of Gbox, so about to possibly have to remove box again. Don't have a pit, so tossing up whether to do under car (remove box only) or whether to remove engine and gbox. Former I need someone to help lift box (getting old), but remove engine seems more work, but seeing I have engine hoist, I can do that on my own/with no help, (put it in on my own), so probably do that. But great vid. Even though I have done it a few times (had car since 93/done 330,000 kms in it), always handy to watch a vid and revisit/jog memory. Thanks!!!!!
I love the idea of a pit of a lift, but sadly I have no room for either. Good luck with your engine/gbox removal.
I wouldn't put radweld in 😱You also need a raised expansion tank,New rad and electric fans i would think.
Radweld has worked fine. Car doesn't overheat any longer. You've got to remember the stag engine only overheated because they came out of the factory with the water channels bunged up. Once that's cleaned up the engine is sweet.
Hi Henry, at 16:47 there's a view of the exhaust clamp holding the centre and rear sections, mine just has a bog standard clamp holding those sections together and I have never been able to get the exhaust to pass centrally through the circular holes in the subframe. I've had to resort to packing out the holes with fireproof material to stop the exhaust knocking on the subframe. I see from the Rimmer's diagram that your clamps are the correct type with a whole host of washers and spacers. Do these clamps do anything other than clamp the exhaust sections together or do they in some way steady the exhaust? Congratulations on getting the job done, mine has a noisy bearing rattle that goes away when the clutch is depressed, one of those jobs to tackle when it finally gives up completely.
I'm away at the moment roger but will check in a couple of days. I'm pretty sure they did help hold it in place, but cannot remember how
Great road trip Henry, My Mother was what we call over here a WarBride, She came from a large family in a small town, Calderbank close to Glasgow. I have been close to where your trip went but never that far north, Debbie and I did the Scotch Whiskey trail back in 1989..the last time I visited Scotland..I will have to come over again and do this trip...
There are a lot of distilleries on the trail if it took your fancy again
@@HenrysGarage Yup, it sounds like a good Idea...I will work on it..
I have to replace the left regulator on my Tr8, after watching your video, I am now scared to attempt it. LOL
Don't be scared; I can make the simpliest job look easy partly because I never read the instructions. You need patience, but it will come
very nice colour scheme
Glad you like it
Hey Henry, I too have just dismantled my (older type master cylinder according to Rimmer's diagram) and I was scratching my head as the spring came out before the primary seal and was the other way around as you found. With the cylinder off the car, and prior to dismantling, I was surprised to find that with the cylinder depressed I could 'blow' through the feed hole to the reservoir, I would have thought this should not be possible. I ordered a set of 'old type' seals including the primary 'cup' seal from Robsport and they sent the new seals despite their website image showing the early type. Their response was that the image needs updating and, what arrived, is all they now supply and the new seals work fine in the older cylinder. After complaining they refunded the cost of the seals but not their extortionate postage charge. Now waiting for the correct type to arrive from an eBay seller. Anyway thanks for your video, luckily my spring is OK so I'll see what happens when I put it back together as per the Rimmer's and Haynes diagrams.
Good luck with the eBay seals. I find RimmerBros expensive for both parts and postage but it almost always has the parts and they're easy to find on the website. Some others have websites where you think they don't want to .make sales
@@HenrysGarage Concur here. I have had a lot of dodgy seals, and there are a lot around. On my Jag, I found clutch master and slave cyl were decent price, but seals leaked when I got the master. Ordered genuine "old school" seals in the genuine box, weren't expensive, so now perfect. I rebuilt the brake booster on the Jag, and that is also a semi (remote) master cyl config as well. Same thing, lots of cheap seals around, genuine seal kit not much more, and found them excellent. Easier just to buy that, as don't want to have to do it again. On my Stag, there were two slave cyls available that people supposedly use, ie two different bores. The larger bore has less travel, but less effort, wheras the small bore had more travel/needed more effort. I went with the less effort one, as there is only JUST enough travel, but the more travel one had the "slip point" right on the clutch spring "tipping point" that made it quite difficult to hold there/slip properly on take off. Each to their own. That washer on the pushrod shaft on the master cyl is normal. It isn't mentioned as a separate part, as it doesn't come off. Just a point on the manual pics (suck eggs I know), but often the parts lists are a better diagram to look at. They often show a better sequence in their exploded diagram, but have to be careful, as sometimes (enough to mention it) parts can be in wrong order/wrong way around. I find that the Stag books are pretty average, as by then, we were getting into that "replace higher assembly" age, wheras the sedan manauls were earlier, back when shops actually overhauled individual modules. So, while you have to read between the lines to make sure it WILL also apply to a Stag, often the sedan manuals will have ten pages relating to overhaul of a part, wheras the Stag one has a page if that for same section, because "just replace with exchange unit." I know the old sedan parts lists are far more extensive/actually tell you why/how/what. But (as an example) I have the April 78 parts list for the Stag, and that has "pre xxx/post xxx" for some parts. Go through the older Stag parts lists, and there are up to 4 or 5 variations in the earlier ones, wheras 78 one lists 2................... Now, if parts were everywhere, then fine, refine it down to 2. But if someone has the earlier 3 variations in stock, but NOT those "last two", then nice to know if that is ok/will fit. Of course, then have to find out what paired with/changed in sets, but earlier lists usually have clues. The fun of owning a Stag. While these are "fiddles", they have helped me keep my Stag on the road for 31 years and 421,000 kms (330,000 of those put on it by me). Love your videos. 🙂
Hi Henry, Amazing trip with jaw dropping scenery....😮 Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, great trip and I'll keep some great memories
Henry, I also suffer from a big foot bridging the accelerator and brake in my MGB, as recently as Saturday on my way to a car show. While downshifting and braking my size twelves (US) have a tendency to hit both pedals. I try to quickly lift off and move to just the brake without fumbling with the clutch as well. Even though I make an effort to pick the narrowest shoes in the closet, I still miss the mark once in a while. Looks like a great drive with your Dad to boot.
Yeah, I think it was only going back to older cars thatade.me realise how close the pedals used to be. I really didn't have much driving experience at the time so it was quite nerve wracking
What a fantastic trip, it's a must to have ago. Very much like the passes in the Lake District which I have driven, Well done you. Thanks for sharing some great views and driving roads. All the best Bob. (the Stag seemed to perform very well)
The Stag was stunning throughout. And the Lake District definitely deserves a tour. So many roads so little time
So nice you were able to share a road trip with your father in a lovely classic.
Yeah, the guy is amazing at 84 and still out and about everyday
Great Henry, really enjoyed that. I have driven around the Mallaig area years ago but in a hire car on holiday. Thank you for taking us along these cars are well suited and robust enough for such tours! Recently did the Bicester run from Plymouth in TR7 and it was quite comfortable cruising. Not such good views for content though!
Yeah, it was a great few days
Hi Henry, did you ever solve this? (I’m having the same issue 😂 thanks!
I did. My problem was I needed to replace the clutch plate and bearing. When I took the gearbox out the bearing was flat as a pancake. There are some videos showing me taking it out the gearbox, replacing the parts and reinstalling the gearbox.
Ok many thanks! Mine has a new bearing and clutch plate so fingers Crossed it’s just stuck after a 1 year lay up. Thanks for the gr8 and helpful vids!
Interesting video, I've fancied getting one and possibly fitting a small turbo diesel with some reasonably long gears for B roads and motorway runs. Btw, I was amazed when you said 57mpg on the motorway, my mum's Golf TDI gets 56 and that's without being a quick car.
I'm assuming you think that's pretty good. I tend to potter at 70-75 which helps. My previous 320, from before the diesel scandal of German cars managed 64
@@HenrysGarage 57 or 64mpg is in the ballpark for an Audi A2 TDI based around efficient travelling rather than being comfortably quick.. Meanwhile my 98 2.8i BMW can get low 40's on the motorway and is closer to your MGB on the work run.. currently repairing a BX diesel which will reduce my costs even with the 2nd insurance and tax.
Crazy to see all the rust on UK vehicles, I just bought a 76 TR7 for parts here in California. It's been sitting for 40 years and totally rust free, No oxidation anywhere either.
I am envious¡!!!!!
@@HenrysGarage it’s pretty scary to see what you guys across the pond are putting together over there. It’s a lot of work dealing with rusts especially the undercarriages
Just found your link and subscribed. Most informative indeed. I'm a long MGB fan from the 1980s, but over the years have owned many other Brit classics etc and only recently have bought another MGB GT after 36 odd years. It's a 1967 model I owned 36 years ago - yes it's the very same GT I sold in 1988. I found it purely by chance on an online site 4 sale last April, and its still in lovely condition. Your vid will help with its maintenance.
I'm glad you find them useful. Look up university motors for lots of MGB content. I tried to find my original TR7 but have been unable to track it down
Nice to see you back enjoy your videos
Thanks
Hi Henry, nice update, shame about the handbrake handle. I was wondering a few times how yu were getting on. Did the MG sell?
Hi Chris, yeah, it sold but for rather less than I hoped. The Aussie that bought it reckoned he got a great deal. Handbrake was interesting to realise how it worked.
@@HenrysGarage I did feel for you seeing you try and work out what was happening. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but seeing all the crud around the button etc a good soaking may have made the difference, do you have an ultrasonic bath?
Yeah, I have an ultrasonic but I did clean the button up pretty well. The issue is the lever is over extending slightly because the button is going in too far and that's why it gets stuck. Gentle on the button or put something in the tube to stop that are the solutions
Looking good Henry. Take care Mate. Kind regards, Chris Robinson.
Thanks Chris
Hi Henry, have you taken the car off ebay
No, it sold
Ahh. I hope she goes to a good home. This series has helped me so much in rebuilding my MG and was a massive inspiration in getting her done. I look forward to the next episodes on the TR7 and he4 life as the daily.
I'm pleased the series has helped you. Yeah, I hope someone who has the time picks it up, drives and maintains it. I don't want it going to rot in a garage somewhere
Hey Henry, I didn't realise you were so close. I'm just up the road in Llantwit Major. If my wife would let me have another B I'd snap your arm off for this one. But she's put her foot down. Your videos have been massively helpful getting mine running though especially the Overdrive and suspension ones.
Just round the corner! Pop over if you fancy tinkering on the tr7. I'm glad the videos were helpful.
Are you for real with that guy behind you with a blower, did you not hear him ,lol well why did you not give us a ball part fig-er
Sorry
"Doris i went out in the guise of blowing some leaves. Yes that blokes talking to himself again!..."
Yeah, sorry
Honest nice guy you are Henry
Yeah, the car is better than it looks or my sales pitch but I have to be honest
Yup, if I lived closer I would come and load it up....
Haha, it would be some trip to Holland Cove
@@HenrysGarage Good luck with the sale...more budget for the TR7's...
Good luck with the sale Henry. Looking forward to more on the TR7.
Thanks Chris, I should get back to the tr7 soon
New chrome is junk in my experience. Though rechroming is eyewateringly expensive I’m discovering! Hope it goes to a good home.
Thanks. Me too
Henry, take her out for a last driving video. I'd love to see that. Take care. Chris Robinson.
That's a good thought Chris. I might just do that
Good luck with the sale Henry I’ve enjoyed following this journey 👍
Yeah, the MGB is a great car
Shame you can't sell your noisy neighbour!
Looked like John Craven 😂
Perhaps I should have done some editing
Henry, where have you gone?
Hi Andy, I've done a tiny bit of work (reinstalled dash and installed dizzy) but I've not videoed anything. Really just having a break because I was getting frustrated before I even went into the garage. I àm slowly starting again
I’m looking for a video on the front main crank oil seal wondering if you can help me out I need to put one in TR7 1979 thank you have a good day. Love your site.
Hi Jeff, I will have either used a large socket or square of wood to sit on top and then tapped it in place. I would apply a little lubricant to both surfaces first to help it slip in place. Glad you like the channel.
When i first had my stag in 1982 the temperature gauge woild only read about 1/4 of the way across the scale. I replaced the thermostat and it moved the needle up to almost verticle. It still reads the same now after 40 + years .
At least they don't confuse us with a temp value on the dial
