@@MeasuredLight thank you! I’ve walked for days in rain before but I’ve never been more drenched than I was on the day to Charlottes Pass. It wasn’t what I had planned of course but I was glad to make it in the end at least. And I will be back for the Rolling Grounds some other time!

@@MeasuredLight these two days were just extraordinary, the scenery blew me away. And my night at Whites River Hut, bunkered down with a fire inside while it stormed outside, is one of my favourite nights out in a trail ever

@@AaronNolan-p1o hmmm, I’m not sure which section you mean. Was it during these days? The only but where I remember getting off the road was near the powerlines on day 2 where the vehicle track sort of disappeared

@@AaronNolan-p1o all good. I'm actually interested to know about that section too as I would like to do Tharwa to Kiandra (or vice-versa) some other time, but walking through potentially difficult to navigate tall grass with snakes around is not really something I'm particularly enthused about

@@Earlofmar1 totally agree, there is a magical vastness to the area. Usually I hate vehicle track walking, but it so wild out there you quickly forget it’s all on vehicle tracks

@@luket6334 it’s almost 100% of the official Kiandra to Kosciuszko section. I really am not a fan of vehicle track walking in principle but it is a lot less objectionable here as it is a wilderness area so you don’t really see beyond the nature of the national park. Water was very plentiful except for one stretch as a usual water source was dry. Usually I carry two litres but that day I should have refilled at a flowing creek before camp. All other days I could probably have not carried too much as there were constant refill locations

Yes it is. As the river dries out and stops flowing the oxygen runs out and they die. Apparently nothing to be alarmed about albeit unpleasant and a bit gross

@@goinferal5815 it was a shame to have to skip the Rolling Grounds but on the bright side - my night by myself in Whites River Hut with the fire roaring as I planned out my route is probably one of my favourite nights out on a trail ever

@@thelongwaysbetter those mountain huts are great in bad weather… I had the same thing after slogging up Mt Wills in the snow… getting into the hut and starting a fire was such a contrast to my wet and cold morning hiking in the snow… awesome 👍😉

@@johnnomcjohnno1957 thank you, yeah the phone footage was better than I thought it would be. Helps that the landscape was spectacular. I don’t mind a bit of rain for the reasons you said, though the deluge being so full on I had to change my plans was a disappointment. But can’t complain about how good these two days were. I’m definitely coming back to climb Jagungal sometime!

Hey, that's awesome! Thanks for listening to the podcast! My wife would always agree that shortcuts are acceptable :P. Which shortcuts in Abel Tasman National Park do you recommend? I did the Abel Tasman Coast Track in December 2019 and will definitely do it again with my kid in the future

@@thelongwaysbetter I'm in the planning to do Abel Tasman coast track in October with my 15 year old daughter and was listening to your real track talk just a couple days ago. I'm thinking of hiking/ kayaking/ boating for a good mix. I heard you mention a little shortcut near Awaroa Lodge.

@@nathanbates1260 oh yes... it's more an alternate route but I think it does end up a bit shorter. Well worth it for a nice meal in the middle of the track for sure! Enjoy the hike, I reckon it's a great one to take children on as it's not hard and a beautiful walk

Hey Fayley, it's a good point and I will make a video about my gear later this year. To be honest, I pretty much bring the same gear on all my multi-day hikes give or take some items (e.g. no thermal liner if it's a Summer hike and the forecast is quite warm, gaiters if its Tassie or very off track). For this hike I was satisfied with everything I brought and only regretted not packing rain pants and a pack cover for day 5 which was non-stop rain, and I had not realised how the umbrella now runs water off onto my pack which is water resistant but not to that level.

@@SinaArsani hi, there are no restrictions on head coverings and I don’t think you and your wife will have any problems. It’s pretty lacking in shade so some kind of hat or head covering for anyone would be advisable. Hope you and your family enjoy the walk!

@@goinferal5815 excellent choice, it’s a lovely trail. There’s some sand slogging but getting to come into towns and have some Margaret River wine and beer makes it a nice relaxing change from a more wilderness experience

I will be on a one week break and then will drop the Freycinet Peninsula Circuit followed by Kiandra to Kosciuszko

This was starting the Kings Birthday Weekend (end of September) last year. Good luck with your hike, looks like it might be a bit rainy but at least you'll know whether you can pass the river mouth quite easily heading north... it's more risky heading south!

@@thelongwaysbetter I'm very glad you remember to hug the trees. Thanking them for so many things they do for us!! I've visited this national park many, many times, but have only done the eagles view walk once. I hope to do it again. At 15 kilometres, it takes a minimum two hours for most walkers...I think it took me almost three hours... But well worth it !!

Thanks for watching! Yes, I agree Boranup Beach can be a real battle. Last time I did the Cape to Cape in 2017 the middle section of the beach was terribly soft sand and it made it all the more challenging as a result. This time it was more firm under foot, but I agree - that boat ramp seems to never get closer for a good chunk of the walking!

@@goinferal5815 not really at this time of the year tbh… they are much more reliably around in Summertime. Both times I’ve been there in spring there were no stingrays but in Summer there were so many of them!

Oh yeah the wildflower display was a bit nuts in the post-fire landscape! Made up for the burnt forest scenery

I usually hike with poles but now that I’m shooting video my hands are now full and the poles are impractical unfortunately though in hindsight I wish I had used them as I developed Achilles Tendinopathy as a result of the long beach walking. Never knew about Nicholas Crane! I must look that up!
