Answer songs

There was a genre of records that were called answer records, where a sort of follow-up song based on a hit song was recorded to cash in on the hit. This is different than a cover record that was exactly like the original.

Four Lovers Pre Four Seasons circa 1956

Before the Four Seasons Frankie Valli was in a rock and roll group called the Four Lovers around 1956 and 1957. I have taken snippets from their very rare EPs and made a compilation from eight songs.
Simon & Garfunkel meet Tom & Jerry
Переглядів 15 тис.16 років тому
In the late 50s Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel wanted to be rock and roll stars in the worst way. For some reason they got more than their share of chances. Together or individually they were known as Tom & Jerry, Artie Garr, Tico & the Triumphs and also Jerry Landis. Here are some scans of labels to records they made along with a few audio excerpts from a few of their songs.
Alan Freed and some doo-wop
Переглядів 47 тис.16 років тому
Alan Freed was probably the best known disc-jockey of the 50s. His biggest success was in NYC. He also promoted and MC'd several live concerts. Most of these shows had concert programs that you could buy. These are very hard to come these days. I borrowed several covers to these programs from the official Alan Freed website for this slide show.

I have a number of these records and sleeves in my collection, which I bought in 1986: Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Wyatt Earp, Restless Gun, Annie Oakley, Maverick and The Californians. I also have Tales of the Texas Rangers.

I want "Your Morning Feature" off the 3rd show of 1990. That is the one and only time that song was broadcast anywhere on Earth. That show has a few other songs that had their one and only airing on Dr. Demento, possibly their only broadcast ever.

I used to frequent Blue Meanie records in El Cajon CA about 1985/1986. They had a box full of radio transcriptions of the good Doctor's shows for 5 bucks a show. They are pictured in the video with the yellow labels & Westworld one logos. They are 2 record sets with the commercials pressed in on the discs. Anyhow the first time I saw them, i went up to the owner and said "How much for the whole batch?" I was a regular basis 2 times a week customer probably spending a couple hundred bucks a month at the very least, so he gave me the whole collection for 100 bucks. There was about 50 shows, 100 LPs in all. Somebody must have grabbed them at the radio station they worked at, it's probably the best buy I ever made! The records are pressed like fine wine, beautiful to listen to & played maybe once when they went out over the air. THE BEST THING EVER! The Doctor, as much as I want, whenever I want, & crystal clear & clean to listen to!

Did you get these transferred to digital. I am in a trading group on the look out for more shows. If you have 1984 shows, they are first that Westwood One put on vinyl.

The term "doo wop" is revisionist history. Alan Freed NEVER used the term. It was known as ROCK 'N' ROLL.

I told them I have never heard of him and found out a lot of people where I'm from haven't either. who the hell finds this stupidity entertaining?? stupid as F uck. get a life. whoever thinks this is Talent I usually doesn't know what talent is. this is stupid shit... only mental people would find this entertaining and by talk I mean people that drink their own urine. this is a bunch of BS not funny at all just like Weird Al Yankovic isn't funny but stupid is f***

The good doctor has never really been appreciated for his talent. His "Doctor" title comes from the fact that he holds a doctorate in music from my understanding. He's getting up there in age and I just hope he is recognized for the talent he really is before he passes on.

    • @kirkmoore4515
      @kirkmoore4515 5 років тому

MGR1900 The Doctor aka Barry Hansen was one of the jocks on the orginal 94.7 KMET along with Tom Donahue & the other "long haired rebellious radio freaks" in the early day of progressive FM radio history back before playlists, contests to win gimmicky prizes & what not. They sucked you in by playing different kinds of music back then, not AC/DC over & over again. The Doctor was one of them. We'll never hear that kind of radio again. The huge conglomerates have seen to that.

I discovered Doo-Wop by listening to the Roger Scott show on Capital Radio in the 70's. Used to rush home with the tape recorder ready to record the tunes played. Almost 40 years later, thanks to UA-cam I'm discovering the artists I used to record. These tunes I know of by heart, but never knew who performed them.
