Based on Frippertronics, I'm playing an improvised solo on the Charvel SoCal through a Tube Screamer, Fuzz Face and Octave Pedal. Loads of compression to get sustained tones. A little Univibe in there too. Going though a Mesa amp and cab sim in the Line 6 HX Stomp. Reverb and Delay added in Ableton. I've got some tape loops of myself playing chords in the background. Actually played out of sync...

Some easy, beautiful chords for all levels here. Shoegaze influenced Surf Rock maybe? Using the Fender Jaguar rhythm and lead pickups here for that balanced tone. @@doubled5383 ah thanks so much! Hope you’re having a great Sunday! 🎸
Correction: Heaven or Las Vegas was released just before what I’d consider the Golden Age of Shoegaze to be. I’m loads older than I realise 🎉
IMHO, the Golden Age of shoegaze would be early to mid 90s, so I would say HOLV was right there in the Golden Age. buying it and then hearing and purchasing Loveless a few months later seemed completely natural to me.
@@Hilaire_Balrog yeah, in my head that album was released in like 1985 but I forget it was actually 1990. So I agree completely with hindsight. That timeline does make more sense when you put it like that.
if you like shoegaze I think you probably should take a look to the pinkshinyultrablast discography. You could pick any track randomly and probably you´d get something cool. Personally I love their 2016 EP happy songs for happy zombies
I heard a lot of Shoegaze music over the years, before it was named as such, and was always inspired by the sounds and moods. I suppose I started to hone in on Shoegaze as a genre with more specificity after hearing the Gathering's cover of "When the Sun Hits." I thought Anneke wrote it, but when I looked into the lyrics I learned it was originally by Slowdive. I first heard the term Shoegaze from watching Rick Beato's channel. I don't know any bands you didn't list, but some of your descriptions of the goth-tinged stuff reminded me of Switchblade Symphony's Serpentine Gallery album, which I haven't heard in years. I don't think it's Shoegaze, but I'm going to check it out tonight and bask in nostalgia haha. I can't wait to delve into the albums in your list! Great episode man.
@@MATTTHEGREETER ah thanks so much! I’ll check that out too. I nearly mentioned Galaxy 500 too, now that I think about it… maybe that’s Slowcore. I love thinking about genres haha 🎸
@@chrisegonmusic I'm not sure where Mazzy Star fits into everything, but I've been covering Into Dust for a million years. I'm definitely a genre-jumper though. From Type O-Negative, to The Tragically Hip, Trip Hop, Prog, etc. I now find myself the point person on a worship team haha. I've gone from being a lead-singing bass player to a strummer who has to learn ALL the notes in chords, not just the root and "fun" notes! I'd like to think my Sepultura, Grunge, or Massive Attack roots show through from time to time :)
@@MATTTHEGREETER October Rust is one of my all time favourite albums. Yeah, Mazzy Star I’ve heard classified as Dream Pop. Beautiful songs.
@@chrisegonmusic I dug out Switchblade Symphony's Serpentine Gallery for the first time in years. Definitely NOT Shoegaze haha. I feel like the Gathering, especially the Anneke Van Giersbergen years was somewhat adjacent though.
@@MATTTHEGREETER Haha. I always feel like some of Smashing Pumpkins’ stuff is Shoegaze-ish but people will go wild if I suggest that 😂

I spent my teens and my early 20s living in between Boston and NYC, and I got to experience shoegaze becoming a thing through American shoegaze bands. We didn't get the title of shoegaze applied to it until about 93. Before then, we just thought noise music was getting to be popular, and some bands in the UK had caught on to it. Life with without the internet was very different. I always introduce people to shoegaze, starting with one song, "House of Pancakes" by Swirlies. It has all of the elements that make shoegaze shoegaze, and you can dance to it. It tends to go well.
Swirlies are amongst the heroes I’d say. I feel like I’ve only really used the term ‘shoegaze’ in maybe the last ten years. I also feel like the meaning has shifted slightly with the dawn of internet culture. Thanks so much for the comment! Really great to hear people’s experiences 🎸
@@chrisegonmusic I now live in Dallas Texas a city that is so uncool that it's actually cool. No one here is into shoegaze or really anything actually indie. So I then to think about how to get people into it so I have people to make music with.

What needs to be added to the list? What's your favourite shoegaze album? I forgot to mention The Jesus and Mary Chain so there's one right away.
Without watching the video yet, here's my idea: Low gain drive -> Chorus -> Reverb -> Any fuzzy distortion -> Delay (or Boss Space Echo) -> Gaze EDIT: Nice shout on the Slicer. I have one of the big ones on my board I use in stereo, it makes a lot of cool noises.
I’m thinking about the Space Echo next! I only really use fuzz after reverb for studio stuff as it’s so temperamental haha. Boss Slicer is a legend. Thanks! 🎸
Hi, thanks for the sounds, i like it a lot. Some of the presets needs a IR?
@@Alejandro-tn6mt I think in the ones I put up for free download, I set it so you don’t need IRs but you could use your own. Thanks!
I appreciate your insights! I'm creating more of a Dream Pop board that can also do Prog, Fusion, and Metal... I'm a reverb junkie so I'll be adding another soon. For Shoegazing Fuzz, I was thinking about being economical and using that feature on the Attack Decay or Ottobit Jr... I guess the possibilities are endless for pedalboards!
The only fuzz I own is the ROSS fuzz. I was invited to a really weird jam out in a trailer in the woods a couple years ago, a one-time thing. I played my 4-string bass (strung BEAD) through a Kustom tuck & roll that lived in the trailer. Massive setup with 2 me-sized speaker cabs all wrapped in the Kustom naugahyde. The tone coming out of that amp was absolutely massive, but really plush. It felt like if I laid the cabs down I could just sink into the tone and float there. So cool. When I heard that ROSS was back in business and had put the fuzz circuit from the Kustom into pedal form I bought one instantly. I really dig it. Wish I had that Kustom setup though! Hey, I'm probably over-selling the tone, but it really had an impact on me that night.
That night sounds amazing. Ross fuzz is a really solid fuzz. Kind of archetypal I think.
Great textures!
Ah thanks again!
Great! What string action do you have?
Pretty high on the Jag usually but the seasons have changed and I need to take the neck off and adjust it. Currently a bit lower than I like it. Cheers
I just need an offset with whammy, drive, chorus, reverb, and money
@@das_bombenhund the trem system in the Jaguar and Jazzmaster are so good for this type of music. We never have money as it goes towards drive, chorus and reverb. Possibly the odd set of strings 🎸

You could go cheap, simple, and very cool like a JHS 3-Series Octave Reverb or their Harmonic Tremolo perhaps? I also have a Way Huge Atreides. @@MATTTHEGREETER Ah cheers! A few people have suggested the Atreides and I’m tempted! Maybe it’s the Dune reference that’s got me 🎸
I like to keep delays and other modulation pedals after AND before dirt/fuzz. Don’t forget a wha pedal 😉 Rock on
@@singularity360 yeah it’s popular in shoegaze but I feel like it’s harder to control haha.
You seem to be doing this on the cheep. You could use a Microcosm, glitches and modulations for days. Maybe a looper, and step up your delay to at least a line 6 DL-4 mark II. Presets. Tap tempo and a looper, and a dual delay. And a Bit crusher would be nice, like the data corruptor for weird solos and monster riffs. I think you have a good start but need to push that board a little further. Good call on the slicer (which im gonna have to get now) and the afterneath.
Walrus Fable is the most expensive on here I think. I have an HX Stomp which has the DL. I like that pedal but can’t really justify it since I basically already have access to it there. I have a looper but don’t really care for them. Also have an Ottobit jr. but haven’t really got my head around it yet. Definitely would go with this board though. Not really interested in the Microcosm but have considered it. It feel like it just sounds like a Microcosm. This board is definitely a simplified version of others I’ve used. Cheers 🎸

@@nerdebynature Ah, glad to hear it! I’m in the rhythm of setting them up then taking them apart again at the moment. Helps to have the board and power supply in place I find. Thanks so much! 🎸
Love all these sounds. I may have to pick up that rusty fuzz. Another weird delay option is the dd8 with the reverse setting. I turn the time pretty low, the feedback around 1 o clock, and the volume at 12. I have a boss ph3 on the fall setting going into that if my dirt pedals are off. I like to think of it as a bubbling or gurgling noise. Pretty damn fun.
@@briangarcia8384 honestly it’s great. Especially for the price. The reason I’m after the DD-8 is for the reverse, analog and glitch settings. Really underrated delay. Thanks so much! 🎸

Oh, and I think a RAT is a good choice to go with Acapulco Gold. And can also do everything from Shoegaze to full doom. Acapulco Gold & Rat can get you into full bore MBV mode. Or with the also great and cheap EHX Octavix even Sunn O))) Life Pedal territory. I really like the TC Magus Pro, because it's cheap, small and I think better than the newer standard Proco RAT because of that. And also because you get three voicings, standard, FAT, & Turbo. I especially like the latter. And the FAT RAT mode, and Plumes, are both good for grinding Kim Gordon style bass tone too. Similar story with using the volume to adjust the level, then the RAT can do everything from Boost, to Distortion to near Fuzz. It's a very versatile and playable pedal. Above the TC, and the EHX Green Russian reissue, I really like the Way Huge Green Pickle, it can get really unhinged if you want to. But it's very tuneable and controllable too.
@@compucorder64 yeah! I’ve actually got a drone metal video where I combine the Acapulco, Woolley Mammoth and Joyo Splinter (Fat Rat clone). Was a while ago and I didn’t do that good a job of it haha. Pyroclasts by Sunn O))) massively inspired it. Definitely going to do a doom pedalboard video and maybe drone. Also thinking about doing a high gain combo type thing. A few ideas anyway haha.
@@chrisegonmusic Ah, I missed that. I only just subscribed. A Doom, & Drone pedalboard video would be very cool. I'm puzzling out those sounds now. With a Guild Polara, and a P90 Gibson Les Paul Special, into an Orange Rocker 30. Settled on the Acapulco Gold, TC Magus Pro RAT & Way Huge Green Pickle. For Drone, though more coming from the synth side, I love my Soma Cosmos, Chase Bliss Mood mk.II, OBNE Dark Star, Meris Polymoon & Meris Mercury X. OBNE Sunlight would be cool too, as well as their Beam Splitter. That Infiniti pedal too.
@@compucorder64 I’ve been very close to getting a Guild Polara! I’ve got the Meris Enzo and Ottobit but am really just scratching the surface with them. Thanks for the sub!
Your descriptions are actually spot on. It DOES sound like a Wizard in a cave, an Electric Wizard. And that description of a Granular Delay is pretty spot on laymans description of granular processing. If you ever get a chance to read it, Curtis Rhodes Microsound book gives great coverage and it's a good book to skim through, at least parts of.
@@compucorder64 Ah thanks so much. I really appreciate that. Good shout on that book. Will have a look. Yeah, the Afterneath really takes me to places. Very ‘visual’ sound, if that makes sense 🎸
Interesting combination :) one question though, if your signal goes from the slicer into the compressor I would assume the change in volume from the slicer interferes with the compressor, since this would try to level out the volume changes.
@@MaikeruSumisu cheers! Yeah that’s interesting and a great question! I think that mostly applies to a sine wave style tremolo, which the Slicer can do but I use it as more of a stutter, on/off. Maybe there’s something happening there but nothing that I’ve noticed too much. I like compression after a fading delay as there’s definitely some interaction there. I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand compression. My relationship with it continues to get slightly better throughout the years 🎸
@@chrisegonmusic yes, true, if it's only on/off then there is no signal left to compress/enhance. I love tremolo (or similar modulation effects) after fuzz or reverb to really bring all that texture alive. Regarding compression, I understand it from a theoretical point of view, but somehow my ears never got there 😅 for me, I always used it as a sound-shaping tool
@@MaikeruSumisu I lost so much sleep over compression 😂 I put several tremolos in a chain sometimes actually. At the start and end of the chain. I feel like humans love tremolo for some reason haha.
