dog's definitely smell truffles, people train them to find them, not all dogs like them.

Great video and I have to ask. Do these burn morels taste and smell any different? Gastral intestinal problems after consuming? Wood ash And the high alkalinity of the soil obviously create major growth of morels in some instances. Would be interesting to know at either burn spot which was the predominant tree species. I am truly impressed to have seen and learned from your video. Thanks again for putting it up.
burn morels dominate the fresh morel market. greenhouse morels from china were involved in a poisoning incident at daves sushi in bozeman. Morels, like chicken, should always be properly cooked. dominant trees were conifer, mostly pine or doug fir.

Wow, in the past few years I've found about 10 morels per year. Hahaha... Here in Ct they are very elusive. I do have a question tho. If an area has been burned recently would you go to it that year, or the next year? I found 2 mainly elm forests near me that are infected with Dutch Elm disease and the state is burning them to make way for healthy Elms. They both were burned at different times in Feb. I'm wondering if it's worth the drive this year, or should we wait?

Are there any Amanita mushrooms that look like these with the white cap and crackly shaggy looking brown spots on the cap? I just found a bunch that look like these with a thick white stem and what looks like an egg sac at the bottom of the stem, which makes me think I found Amanistas. Any idea guys?
the orange stain is a good field identification for this mushroom. amanita warts wipe off the cap, unlike these which are part of the cap
You are right! Creepy is right! We literally bumped into corn smut this season for the first time. It makes a tasty taco and is quite delicious once you get past the initially creepy appearance. Thanks for sharing!

oh, do you hunt morels?
Yes, they are easily cultivated. I have had dozens of successful inoculations of this mushroom simply by cutting off the bottom 1/3 of the stipe, with the white mycelia and maybe even some grass attached, and place it in a fencerow or by a shrub covered with no more than 3-4 inches grass clippings.

We basically have black and yellow morel here in the east. Mainly around white ash, elm and apple trees. What kinds of trees do morel relate to out west?
Burn morels are found in conifer forests, but may associate with other shrubs. The taxonomic identity of burn morels is under study.
We find them under pine, apple trees, poplar trees, maples and some elms.
I found my first patch of morels north of topeka on 4/28. 10 of them with half being 5inchs +-. So yummy cant wait to find more!
