This is all about using line feed to get around low quality mic pre-amps in recorders and cameras. Why would you knock down a pristine line feed from a $1,300 SD-302, which has world class magnetic pre-amps, and start over using mic pre-amps in a $300 recorder? Always use a line input into a recorder or camera when you have good front end equipment. Note: My voice got really hoarse, there is no...

    In your opinion, if one only uses two channels, is it worth using an SD302 combined with the Fostex FR2-le? Or do the Fostex preamps do the same job? This is leaving aside the fact that the 302's analog limiter is certainly a plus compared to the FR2-le alone.

      Yes, this movie is 11 years old. I guess I'll take it down. Turns out that all was good if you kept the H4n input volume at 50% or less. Actually, same as every digital recorder then and now. Run the analog mic and field mixer hot at +0, but dial down your digital recorder to receive that signal in the -12 range.

    With all due respect, I think this is bad advice. Set up the 302 to output a 0dbu 1K tone (default). Line that up to the H4n line inputs (TS unbalanced) at -20dbFS (the meter on the H4n is a dbFS meter not dbu). This allows head room and allows the 302 limiters (set at the default 20dbu setting) to catch the momentary peaks but keep your over all levels around 0 to about +8 on the 302 meter which will correspond to -20 to -12 on the H4n meaning you'll never clip and have FULL dynamic performance of the 302 and the H4n. You've set it up for extreme limiting and lowered the total dynamic range available on both devices. You should then set your input levels on the 302 to dance between 0 and +8, again seeing -20dbFS to -12dbFS on your H4n which is pretty standard for digital recording. The H4n does have a poor line input spec and adjusting the output of the 302 to a -10dbu level is totally relevant and useful but the levels should still be set as described above for maximum dynamics and fidelity.

    • @rolandcomfort
      @rolandcomfort 3 роки тому

      Yes, I think you are right. I could never wrap my head around the default limit at +20 dbu on the 302. But the SD guys are never wrong. So, go all the way with the 302 and cut back on the digital dbfs devices to match. I was worried about getting edgy at the tops. Thanks. I haven't messed with audio for about 10 years and should probably delete the videos, however, a lot of new people to audio don't get the difference between analog dbu and digital dbfs. It's a journey. Thanks again for your insightful comment. About 20 years ago, I didn't know anything about movie audio, and was hanging around a location shoot, and I asked the audio guy, "How does this work?" He said "I crank up the front end and cut back the back end." I didn't have a clue what he was talking about. It gets clearer every day.

    I don't believe side by side comparisons make much sense. Let me explain. I have two pairs of headphones, the MDR-7506 and HD280. They sound vastly different side by side. Compared to the MDR-7506, the HD280 sounds shockingly muffled when listened to after having the MDR-7506 on my head. However, couple of days later, the HD280 sounded normal. Answer? Human brain adjusts to those differences. So what's the point to compare side by side?

    Great video!!! Thanx!!!! I've seen many people saying Zoom H4n (and pro) hasn't LINE IN input, and that you have to use external XLR pad attenuators (-20db) to use input 1 & 2 for line in signal. I got an answer from Zoom saying i can use the 3.5mm back input for line in. As well as, the 1 & 2 input, but in this case i have to set the line out of the Shure FP33 mixer to MIC. I can confirm this watching your video, and the way (and cables) you make the connections. Thank you!!!

    You deserve so much praise for what you are trying to accomplish..you obviously care about the history of this neighborhood and the buildings..I wish you much luck and I hope you succeed..I had beautiful memories of my grandparents home on 2804 burd Avenue in St. Louis..I was praying it would still be standing..I did an address search on Google and got a view of the street and the spot it stood..it was gone just wiped off the face of the earth..all the memories of my childhood with my loving grandmother in that house..it hurt so bad..most of the homes were gone it didn't even look like the neighborhood at all..it looked like the country..so save as many places as you can..I would give anything to see the house one more time. My grandparents came over from Italy in the 1930s it was there first home and lived in it till my grandfather died and my grandmother went to live with her oldest son..their names were Bernardo and Angelina Nardi.

    • @rolandcomfort
      @rolandcomfort 5 років тому

      Thanks. I haven't looked at that video for about 5 years and in doing so have a comment. Turns out that the H4n and most cameras have input mic preamp circuits that you can't avoid. So, your goal is to send a strong output signal from your expensive Sennheiser G2-3's or high quality field mixer so you can turn down the input volume of the H4n or audio input of your camera. Additionally, don't forget the fundamental difference between dB and dBFS. Your mic and field mixer or G2-3 are analogue with bars running optimally at 0 to +10 dB. Recorders (and digital cameras) are digital with bars running optimally at about -20 dBFS. So, when you hear audio editors say that they like levels running about -20 they mean -20 dbFS digital as recorded on the SD card. But, your boom guy riding levels on a field mixer should be looking at levels around 0 to +10 dB (analogue). Obviously, you set up the offset 0dB vs -20 dBFS relationship between the mixer (analogue) and recorder (digital) before the shoot begins. Hope this helps.

And trust me you won't be able to "rescue" it most of the time if you're doing documentaries or outdoors feature locations. While the 416 may not be the BEST mic out there it is a crazy trusty workhorse and it'll be alive maybe all of your professional life as a sound recordist. And it'll give you this very distinguishable character. EDIT: typho
