devastating. stories that are happening every single day, and the way they affected kendrick. The guy that was trapped in the gang life and didn't ever believe he could become anything or fix his life up, he got shot before he could even finish his verse (and right when he was finally starting to hope for something). the girl that was in a life of prostitution and got so resigned that she rejected any kind of sympathy and swore she'd never fade off but in the end, her voice faded out like that of so many victims who's suffering gets lost in the madness (I think she "faded"/aka slowly died of disease). dying of thirst... not just dying from lack of the holy spirit as expressed by kendrick, but also thirst for revenge and thirst for hope. these people are dying of thirst. the futility of gang life, the way suffering begets suffering, the way lives end before they can begin, and the survivors guilt that haunts people like kendrick who are trying to tell these stories to not only keep his own story from disappearing, but the stories of these people he knows and lost. the fear of being forgotten after having lived too much life. I like to think the "Promise that you will sing about me" lines sound so unnatural/robotic compared to the other voices because they're like repeated things he hears in his head all the time over and over, it's ingrained in him, like a record. the song hurts so damn bad, but telling and healing the story is part of the healing.
