I had no idea how to do this! 🤯 {Building a Quonset Hut Wood Shop}
Переглядів 192 тис.14 днів тому
This shop is literally a dream come true for me. Follow my story from Southern California to Indiana, from teacher, to full-time woodworker, and from little construction experience to Quonset Hut builder. I take you through my whole process from designing on a scratch piece of paper to professional engineered plans to my sketchy permitting applications. I also take you through the build as much...
I should’ve started building cabinets this way a long time ago.

These built-in cabinets and bookshelves were a nice and simple build, a great beginner/intermediate cabinet project. I spend time showing how I scribe my fillers and countertops as well as leveling cabinets from across the room with each other. Plant the seed, And watch it grow? I see, in the future, concrete pad outside the double doors, Doubles as picnic party area, play spot for kids, with, A lean too roof overhead, for, Bar B que area for rainy days, and Also helps in unloading on those rainy days, Keeps you from backing inside and dripping all over. Saw dust, stored in a five gallon bucket, Just add water, Makes for some fantastic FLOOR sweep. The moisture keeps the dust down. Great shop/man cave/garage/quite spot?
Love it. I just found your channel yesterday and saw your shop build video . (nice video ) I was wanting to see more on your shop and was happy to see todays timely edition. I built a woodshop this summer with my son but all I have so far is the finished shell. I still have to figure out the layout so I can run the Electric . It helps to see your layout and hear and see you workflow. I like what you have done. You made smart decisions . I am having trouble figuring out my layout because my shop is in Georgia and I still live in Cincinnati. I am trying to have it ready for me when I eventually move there. I guess I will have to learn how to use sketch up and make a virtual layout. Seeing your layout helps plenty. Thanks for sharing!
Congratulations on your new shop and glad the video was helpful in your decision process. Best of luck!
@@paxwoodworking Thank you.

Congratulations lol
Nooice! 😎 STOC
Good ladder trick. I like the recessed front design. Most cool.
Thanks!
Very nice. Keep updating your progress .
Awesome video!!! Very inspiring and thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your dream and accomplishment.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Ho lee how thick is that pad ?
Sweet shop there mate. Nice work!!
Holy ridiculous permanent Batman
Love when the algorithm and my location come together to show me local makers/creators. Looks awesome! Came back to add that your sign off at the end was really great to hear. I’m at a crossroads with potentially losing my dream job due to financial instability and working up the courage to go it solo with making.
Thank you! And man I’m sorry to hear about that situation. If it requires courage, it might mean you should go for it!
You (and your kubota) needs some fluid film in your life. Both stops corrosion and loosen bolts
Dream Quonset! I was telling a friend this is what we need to build on his property. As a career professional construction engineer, a lot of people don't realize there is a lot of "PreConstruction" work as you described that can be performed before all the funding. Basically you can start your dream project long before the shovel goes in the ground.
WoodPrix plans are a fantastic resource for anyone passionate about working with wood, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned craftsman.
I appreciate the structural aspect of the arched walls that have style. Nice work
Thanks!
The amount of ankle grabbing needed to do what we want on land that we supposedly "own" is mind boggling. Such free people, we. We totally "own" our own homes, don't we.
WOW awesome job looks great congrats !
Are you not insulating the roof?
Also curious about that. Also wouldn't it get super loud inside anytime it rains?
I would love some info on the double doors. I’m almost finished of mine and have an 8x8 opening. Thanks!
I have an 8x8 opening as well. They are made from poplar and finished with a cedar stain by Sherwin Williams. They also have chevron pattern groove cuts on the panels. Honestly, they haven’t held up very well to the elements. The finish has not protected the wood well. If I were to do it again, I’d probably paint them with an exterior paint.
@ did you build them yourself?
As a woodworker, this is exactly the type of content that I enjoy. It's informative without commentary. I wish you success with your channel!
Thanks I appreciate that!
I have also made my own shop 36 x 30 x 12. My first big build. Watching you brought back memories. I also put up my siding during sleet and snow storm. 🤣😂 I had my shop for three years then we had to move due to jobs. Ohhhh, what a glorious three years.
lol I love it! Glad you got to enjoy those times. It’s such a special experience to be able to do this.
It's nice to see this building process. Over the years, your dad kept me abreast of your woodworking journey. Wonderful space for your craft.
Thanks Tim!
Hello Quonset Point Rhode Island. Home to the US Navy Seabees (CB-Construction Battalion!). Designers and builders of the Quonset Huts all over the world!! DD
Hoping to be one this year
Where about in Indiana?
Good video. Amazing story. I'm wondering about the conceivability of the same build as a place to live or a guest building. Also, it seems that with different planning/purposes there could be an office/bedroom loft in this space.
Yes absolutely!
What a great story! ...and congratulations!
Thank you!
‘Steelmaster’ best I could tell, is based in Virginia, not Canada.
That is true, however the steel is manufactured in Canada, and that’s where it shipped from, so that’s what was on my mind when I said that.
While HOA’s are terrible, it’s’ zoning set by the municipality which determines lot coverage, especially in the absence of an HOA.
Neither exist in a free society.
I wonder if the arch components could have been assembled as they’re stacked? Rather than try to raise a ground-assembled arch? Just curious.
Yes, some people do that, especially with a scissor lift. I chose not to rent one to save little money.
@@paxwoodworking thanks! nice build!
Where do the extra-tall books go ?.... 😏😂
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. I have been considering building a quonset hut structure for a shop/garage/cabin in the mountains. This really answers so many of the questions I had.
Usually regarding setbacks it is hard to get a variance. If they gave it to you how could they recommend that the next person must follow the law. There may have been a way to get them to allow it, but you you may have had to use solid masonry or concrete. In the future your neighbor may want to do the same setback and then the fire department would lose both buildings.
His seems like a utility corridor setback. I'm betting the normal setback is 10'. We don't have set backs, but we do have automatic variance allowed for fireproof construction and qualified corner lots (corner lots are weird, if you are between two roads ... corner lot)
So how much did it cost ??? Bet it wasn't cheap !!
yeah, but I bet it was a lot cheaper than having contractors do it.
Congratulations on your new building the only one thing I would have done was had the inside spray foamed one for heat two for air leaks and one that keeps it cooler in the in the summer and it's fireproof good luck with your future
Burrrrrr Are you going to attack the insulation for the ceiling? I would think spray foam is the easiest way to meet the curved roof but maybe you have plans? This must be expensive to heat, even to 15.0°C
@23:08 Never tried to install a quonset hut but could you make a temporary wall to help stabilise the 0th and 1st arches. Probably could even be just a right triangle to bolt the apex to something solid.
You have a great looking shop.
You have an ill motivated or poorly lead board. They are appointed or hired to hear cases fairly, open minded and based on facts and the law. I hear that all to often. Best wishes....
Loved the video... side note I chair a local Board of appeals, (hearing cases exactly like yours) we don't say "no" we hear the request for variance, take testimony, admit evidence and based on the facts, law, & open deliberations make a determination if application has meet the standard for variance. Pedantic, I admit, but we balance every request for all property owners' rights. Cheers..
I hear ya, you’re right, I didn’t represent their side in total fairness. However, in my petition/public hearing, I had come with some alternative proposals and it was clear they had already made up their mind before I had even spoken 🫤
Very nice, well done! How are you heating it? I know it is expensive, but, I did spray foam on my 30x40 and it has paid for itself already. At 1200 square feet, I keep it 70F in winter for about $50 a month. Natural gas unit heater in Texas Panhandle . It is 6 degrees this morning and I can walk out my back door to a 70 degree shop. I do motorcycle restorations in mine and some woodwork. Oh, and Beer! I also have the same dog!
Yeah, that’s the plan hopefully to do that. I’ve quoted at least $5k for this, just a matter of waiting till I’m ready to pull the trigger. Thanks for sharing that though! Encouraging to know!
Great video. You didn't waste time at the beginning, and got right into it. You included a lot of great details. And the ending message was great. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Very cool & inspiring!
Well done. Looks like a terrific workspace. And I’ll add my vote for spray foaming that metal. I used spray foam in my metal pole barn and you’ll be amazed out how much quieter the building is and how the foam “locks” everything into place to enhance the structural integrity of the building resulting in a structure that’s not only snug but rock-solid. A suggestion if you haven’t already considered it - install a grid framework of electrical strut suspended from your roof before applying the foam. Something along these lines: ua-cam.com/video/9T5khippBBE/v-deo.htmlsi=XVGFQHvPCs2Xt_sC That grid of strut will provide endless flexibility and options for running electrical, lighting, dust collection, compressed air, you name it. And grab up a bunch of LED shop lights. I used ten Barrina 8’ lights I bought off Amazon in my 350 sq. ft. woodshop and that place is lit up like a clean room at a TSMC fab plant. Again, nice job and best of look in all your future endeavors. P.S. I’m pretty sure your pupper would like a dog door on that shop. 🙂
That was a heck of a gamble investing all of that money BEFORE getting your building permit. In my area, we have to go down 48", AND, there was a year in the 90's where frost was measured at 60"!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful job I have 4 of these buildings here in NC, so after the first two we figured out that it is much easier to go piece by piece. Stand up the sidewalk sections and bolt them into the foundation then work your way up and across. My 12 year old daughter and I put up the 20by20 all by ourselves. There great buildings. God bless
Very cool! I think that would have been a good way to go if we had a scissor lift.
Wow what a great shop. Great job and great video. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it!
How did you mitigate the chance of leaks for the wall tie-backs that were screwed into the "valleys" of the arches? Aren't all of the bolted connections between panels on the "peaks" for that reason? Do you have any plans to insulate the arch panels?
Good question. Those metal to wood fasteners also have rubber washers. I also siliconed every one of those particular bolts. Additionally, the way the building is designed, there’s essentially no flat or level spot, so water is always falling and never has an opportunity to “sit”. Spray foam is the obvious answer for insulation. It may happen someday, but I’ve survived fine without it for now.
This is very nice , hope you get many years of use !!!
Thank you, I hope so too!
Very good job 👏 👍 👌
Thank you! I’m very happy with how it turned out.
