regarding vans, i don’t think that they’re not in style anymore. i assume they’ve been one of the teens „it” shoes for ages and most people just age out of them at some point, so they seem to be out when i was 15 in 2010, vans authentic’s already been the cool shoe for a couple of years back then since it’s been scene and emo kids’ default shoe choice. i remember vans being worn by tumblr gals and pals up until 2015 for sure. and that’s when i thought they were out BUT!! i was wrong because every now and then when i see see high schoolers (which is not that often), they are STILL wearing the same vans that i’ve been wearing. so my theory is that vans is not a trendy shoe in relation to year or what’s trendy now. it’s a trendy shoe for a specific demographic in their teens and early adolescence

A lot of the things you were reminding us about still seem stylish/fun to me.. I still like myself an oversized comfy scarf (not the ones in the pic though, I hate polyester), I still wear checkered stuff, I bought "trendy" ugly dad shoes, Asics in my case, and have been wearing them for almost three years now, I knit a hood/bonnet last year and I adore it.. I think some of the trends are fun, because they give me a chance to see something and learn that it exists. And thankfully I have enough self-awareness to tell if I actually like it and will like for a while or if it's just a passing trend. Overconsumption kills style, taste and the planet.

Have to disagree on both the checkerboard print and bucket hats. They are still very visible on streets, they just become niche. I always see some skateboard kids or just some gorpcore leaning people casually sporting them. And we are all connected online, so we all know what’s in today. It’s just that, we care less and less now. 4 years is nothing for a macrotrend. And that Kanye puffed sporty style is not going anywhere anytime soon. Just as mid 2000s despite late 2000s, 90s, Elena Gilbert style all trending at the same time.

Pretty late to the party, but you have to be careful with buying vintage/second hand hiking shoes etc. in general, because especially when they haven't been worn for a while the plasticizer diffuses from the soles and they fall off or crumble. Therefore you should wear your hiking shoes on a regular basis (which slows down the process a bit and makes them last longer) and be careful with buying second hand ones. Usually you can already see and feel the cracks on the sole before the, fall apart, because the material becomes brittle without plasticizer.

I feel like vans have never gone out of style, but that's probably because I live in Southern California where there are a lot of surfers/skaters. So I think trends also depend on the climate you live in an the culture that surrounds it.
