Welcome, I'm Eric the Old Comic Noob! I collected comics when I was a kid and stopped collecting sometime around 1998 but then picked the hobby back up in December of 2019. This channel is dedicated to sharing my purchases, thoughts on various topics related to the hobby & comic book industry, and one day doing CGC unboxings (or other graders if it comes to that).
Online Comic Shop Review - Mile High Comics
Today is the day I review Mile High Comics!
We've had some ups, we've had some downs...
Mostly downs, sadly 🥺
But like anything, this is just my opinion from my personal experiences and I never tell you to think the way I do.
The reason I do this is so that if anyone else out there is curious about what it's like shopping with a particular online comic dealer, I can provide firsthand info.
I also find it's nice to be able to see what other people have experienced to know whether your own experience was normal with a particular dealer or if it might have been an outlier.
No matter your reason for watching, I hope you enjoy!

Final Comic Book Purchase of 2024
Переглядів 6314 днів тому
Last order for 2024, but definitely not the last comic book order for very long! This purchase from newkadia.com went surprisingly well...at least compared to the last few openings 🤣 The comics in this package range from copper age to modern and both DC and Marvel comics are represented. One I actually thought would made a decent "giveaway" but I'm still working on that plan. Hope you enjoy, an...
An Entire Order Dropped Before Shipping!?

This lot of comic books that I purchased from Midtown Comics had me a bit conflicted from the moment I pressed the button to finalize the order. There were a couple of books that I thought I might have overpaid for and purchased them simply because they were 75% off. But I was resigned to the fact that I made the decision and I was stuck with those comics now. Then I had to wait over a week jus...
Why Do Bad Movies Affect Comic Books
Переглядів 46Місяць тому
Lately, comic book movies and tv shops have been disappointments. Well, at least to some people I personally have found most of them to be pretty entertaining. Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinions, I'm not here to judge. What does confuse me, however, is why comic book movie performances are affecting the actual comic books' markets and prices. So, watch to see my take on the issue and l...
Black Friday Modern Marvel Comic Book Buys

This one is part 2 of my 3-part series of Black Friday comic book purchases. It's the first half of a larger Marvel order and we'll be looking through modern age Marvel books first. Unfortunately, this order is from NewKadia Comics (newkadia.com) so we all know that the chances of everything being smooth are slim. And, yes, I should know by now to not shop there but sometimes the prices are rea...
Black Friday Bronze & Copper Marvel Comic Book Buys

The final part of my 3-part series of Back Friday comic book purchases is here! This time we're dealing with just bronze & copper age Marvel comic books. How bad is it? Will this portion of the unboxing save the purchase from being an unmitigated failure? Or, will it follow the norm and be disappointing and negate the positives we saw in the first two videos of the series? Watch and then let me...

A Little Young Avengers Spec

Today's video is a little bit of a Young Avengers spec purchase for those that might not know, speculating on comic books is pretty much what it seems like, buying books that you think might be valuable in the future for whatever reason. Online Comic Store Review - Lone Star Comics a/k/a My Comic Shop

There are a lot of comic book stores to choose from online, and that's not including resellers on eBay, Instagram, auction houses, etc. With so many local comic book shops closing up, it's becoming a necessity to shop online for a lot of us. With that in mind, I decided to make a series of videos detailing the online comic stores that I shop at, or even those that I try to shop at. Today, I'm h...

This is another huge haul from Midtown Comics! They had a sale the benefitted the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation where (most) every comic book was 15%, 25% or 75% off. Needles to say, I spent quite a bit of time shopping that Wednesday when the sale dropped! In the end, I came away with a HUGE box of nearly 60 comic books it would have been more if 4 of them hadn't been found to be unavail...
Disappointing Little DC Comics Purchase

This purchase had me a little excited when I placed the order because there were a few books that were pretty good deals. Online Comic Shop Review: newkadia com
When I heard about the store, I checked for a website. My first impression was that back in the late 90s the owner thought "we should have one of these new-fangled websites", and one of his employees said, "my nephew Jimmy knows how to make websites", and here we are, still using Jimmy's website from the late 90s. And yeah, their prices are straight delusional.
I really wish those issues weren't the case because we need more options, especially when there are so many books in that warehouse!
I visited their cite for the first time. I have no web design experience but even I thought it was a complete hot mess
Did you hoping to buy stuff and were you able to?
Thanks for doing this one. It gave me anxiety and just watching you do it made me a little ill LOL! The shocking thing is, they still make money somehow!! I always laugh at their 50%, 60%, 90% off!! No matter what; their "Discounted" prices is, the cost will still be higher than normal stores prices every single time. I feel so bad for the people that shop there. You would think that Chuck (the owner) would realize by now; that he could have a kid fix his website; and actually start charging normal prices and he could Slay all the competition with his huge warehouse of comics they have. I will pray that you will never have to go to that website again for the rest of your life! LOL
LOL...I have absolutely nothing against Chuck as he's a legend in this industry (just look at how he's the only one still standing out of all of the stores that used to advertise in comic books). But yeah, the site doesn't take as much time and money as it used to to have changed/designed. And if the prices were a little bit more "normalized" I probably would start shopping there again.
Back issues aren’t their primary business. They make all their money on subscription pre orders. For that, they are awesome
I'll take your word for it--I never used them for that service, only to try to buy back issues--but it's interesting to know.
I recently became interested in comic book art. I ordered 30 comics on the theme of heroines from mycomicbookshop Locally I bought 2 comics for $5 at Five Below, I got a Harley Quinn and a joker comic. At Unique Thrift I got a Guardians of the Galaxy, (Emperor Quinn) and Lumberjanes. You deserve more viewers.
I will be interested in learning what Midtown Comics does about the damage.
I ended up calling them right after I stopped recording and they were (as usual) helpful and friendly. I was told to submit a request via email with all of the images, got the approval to send it back and today I got the notification that the refund was processed. It's almost always very easy to deal with the Midtown online support people!
I've never seen someone that enjoys being disappointed as much as you do.
Have you watched any of the card breakers or anyone who does card/comic grading unboxings? 🤣🤣
15:18 It gives you the grade. That Spidey 5 was graded a Good 2.0
What I meant was that it doesn't tell you if there are pages missing or if the pages are brittle or interior staining. Basically there isn't a description of what makes it that grade--if I'm understanding your comment.
@@oldcomicnoob I see, yes that is true. A 2.0 can have some hidden surprises that's for sure.
@@jjkool48 That's my biggest critique of stores and people who do grading unboxings--they always look at the covers but don't put much effort into the interiors where a lot of damage can hide.
@@oldcomicnoob Exactly! I have had beautiful comics but coupons clipped inside. Page whiteness is also important with older books.
Congrats on hitting 50 subs! Dang, you have the worst luck with shipped books it seems. You inspect your books really well though.... you need to apply to work at CGC! 😉
Thanks! You know what it is, I just happen to be of the mindset that at some point the dealer will learn how to properly grade but it could also by that I'm just delusional 🤣
Lookit all that wall real estate behind you! Looks like a good space to hang some books?
I'm actually in the process of getting my place in shape to try and sell!
After 12 years their absurd new shipping rates is why I stopped using them
I really cannot fault you on that one--it's really a big add-on especially if you don't buy a lot of books in a single order
I bought the Heroines Value Pack Grab Bag - Here are pictures of the covers of six I received. artwrinkles.blogspot.com/2024/10/comics.html Thank you for your thorough coverage of MCS
MCS is my go to place to buy comics. Been a shopper since 2004.
I find them to be one of the more reliable online stores--just wish their sales weren't so weak 🤑
@@oldcomicnoob Truth! Not very good sales for sure. Have you done a review of Mile High Comics on-line? I'm interested in what you would say about them.
@@Spidey-Slabs1962 Not yet, but it's on my list--I have a playlist just for store reviews with 3 others (I think) in it so far
I can't tell who signed it either LOL! Great purchases on those books. I love the New 52 time frame of books, a lot of great stories. I also just got the "hush" run recently, but haven't read them yet. I like the way you examine each book; will admit though, I don't (maybe I should). I know I got a recent book from MyComicsShop though, and it was so perfect that I cannot find anything wrong with it (of course it's a modern comic as well). I always look for the best prices as well, but I mostly have had a great experience with MCS since I started using them around 2008.
I did find out that it was indeed Peter David's sig by searching for one online and comparing them, so that's pretty cool. I think the examining is something I do in case other newer collectors find my videos. So many times I see people looking over the front cover and that's it...especially when they try to figure out why a graded book got a certain grade. Plus no one else really show the audience everything so I figure it might help make me stand out a bit :)
@@oldcomicnoob Peter David's sig. is cool indeed! Great find!
You had me at the *Michigan Hat!* LOL Go Blue! First time seeing your channel recommended to me on my YT homepage, but glad it did. I wish you had more comments though; I know as a smaller channel myself, it is kind of is a downer when you go through all the effort of making/editing/releasing a video and no one makes any comments. So glad to be the first for this video! 😁 Curious, are you closely looking at all your comic purchases to grade them for selling? Or, are you doing a review of the comic book store graders you bought the books from? I have been getting rid of most of my collection, and since my trading and selling books are done, the rest I am sending out for Free (see "Haul yeah comics" recent video for something I sent out for free). I would happily send you a few random books, for free, if you would like. If you happen to have the issues I send, you could feel free to pass them forward to someone else if you wish. If your interested, just let me know. You can also email me if you wish. My contact info is located in my "About tab" on my channel. Those OG GR Books look to be in Great Shape. Especially for 50-Year-old Books made of Newspaper stock and held together by staples.
Sometimes you get lucky and I was definitely glad they came in such great condition!
Do you know the definition of insanity, bro?
I've mentioned it in previous videos!
@@oldcomicnoob So stop going back dude!
lol do you like being disappointed or something? Stop giving these people your money. Have you tried whatnot? There's a few good sellers on there that give honest grades and show the book before they auction it. Lots of deals to be had too. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't.
I caught this Video 9 days later, and enjoyed your content about your own personal Collection of comics and actual evaluations of condition as well and actually looking forwards to actually seeing more from you and hopefully Many other various will come to actually discover you through Social Media throughout the entire Comic Commuinity itself as well. Thanks Again,Subscribed.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
When I was a Kid back in the 70's the trick was to always grab the books from the center of the stack on the rack and pick through them. The first few books from the front and back of the stacks were always mangled. Crushed corners, torn pages, folded and creased pages, curling pages, all kinds of dents, and more. You would be lucky to find three good ones out of a stack for any given title.
I remember running around drugstores as kid and sometimes knocking into the spinner rack or even tipping it over not knowing how much damage we (and others like us) caused. People who weren't around during these times just won't understand how truly rare high-grade newsstand editions are from the 70's-mid 80's.
X-Factor is a title I do collect. It just hasn't been a priority in some time as I've focused more on my main series. But it's a great title to fill in when I find them cheap. Nice haul. Never ordered from Newkadia. Seen their ads plenty of times though, of course.
That's the hard part--finding them cheap. Some sellers are stuck in the 20/21 pricing and others just like to price everything high no matter what the "FMV" should be.
I have a full run of the first series. It took me a long time to find the second to last issue.
Oh I bet that felt niiiiiiiiice to finally get that last one!
Yeah I finished off Vol 1 a bit back. Still happy I got them all.
Are you stopping with the original series or do you also collect the other 3 series as well?
@@oldcomicnoob I'm only missing a few from volume 3, which BTW is excellent Peter David wrote it all, volume 2 was just a few issues I'll get them if I ever seen them in a dollar bin
@@stephenw7052 If I had any of those books I'd certainly offer them to you!
I bought x-factor off the shelves in the 80's and was in collection v1. Stopped collecting from 1992 to 2015, and one of the first full runs i rebought was x-factor around 2016 for around £100. Was always a great read along with the other mutant books, uncanny and new mutants. Greetings from Scotland :)
I think you might be my first international commenter! To be honest, I don't actually enjoy a lot of the art from a lot of "modern" books and prefer feel and style of the bronze and copper age myself.
Og x factor for sure any thing pass Petter David no.i got the #1 skottie Young var.
Yup, I kind of gave up after the David run in the new team run through #80-something as well. Honestly, I'm not a fan of variants and the Skottie variants in particular really never resonated with me.
Newkadia are extremely hit and miss on quality - ordered plenty over the years all the way here to the UK - sometimes have great sales discounts, but I'm very hesitant these days.
Yeah, that's been my experience--mostly miss though and that's why I only shop the sales and will never pay full price with that risk involved.
Hey Brother... I have the first 70 Xfactor books... But i cant find the annuals ( may have given them to kids)____ im not great @ all that key stuff, but i do have issue 5,6, 24 set aside
Well, you've definitely got the major keys down, that's for sure!
So you're buying comics online to speculate and make money. Get off your butt, go to the stores, and but books in person. I hate to even feed your algo, but this is lazy, sneaky comic buying to try to make money.
I bought a full run off eBay 7 or 8 years ago for under $100. I always wanted to read this series and honestly the first half didn't meet my expectations. Once the new team starts in #71 I quickly fell in love and that has since gone on to be one of my favorite teams and series. Even all the way up to and through the Mutant X series.
Yeah, that part of the series was more interesting to me as well--although I really did prefer Archangel to the cheesy original version from the first half of the series.
I've been watching a few X-Factor lots
From the original series or the newer, modern teams?
@@oldcomicnoob just original 80s version
@@wistmoor That's my preference as well...I'm not big on the modern-type stuff.
I love the original run. Was contemplating repurchasing them. Or see if there's a trade available. Was a solid book for a good chunk of its run.
There is an omnibus that's coming out called X-factor the Original X-Men Omnibus HC Vol 01 you might want to look into.
Dude just review the comic book store geez
Dude, that's what I did...geez.
Wow, this is a bad order! Did you get to return any of the bad books?
Nope, I'm not allowed to return any books because they have a policy of only allowing 100 book returns before they cut you off. I surpassed that limit because of how many books I already returned due to not being as described over the last 4 years so now I buy at my own risk.
Wow, I'm surprised at NewKadia's shipping method in a flimsy envelope. That would definitely dissuade people from ordering from them.
Thankfully it was only a one-time thing for me and hopefully not many people had to deal with that.
I placed an order at NewKadia and they gave me the wrong comic so I e-mailed them and they told me that they would give a gift card in the amount of the comic price to make it up to me. They didn't tell me that there were stipulations on the card such as I have to order a certain amount on the price of the order and that the gift card expires. So when I ordered with the gift card, they told me that they were cancelling the order and not going to send me the comics. I was pissed and its as if they didn't give me anything at all. What a headache.
I've never heard anything like that before...I always go refunds even though I told them every time to simply give me a store credit but now I'm glad they didn't listen to me!
lol I've ordered from them 3 times over the years and ended up returning half of the books because they were overgraded by at least 2 whole grades. One book was called a vf+ and it had a detached centerfold. And then I saw the same book relisted on their site a month later with the same grade even though I put a sticky note on the bag that the centerfold was detached. I can't imagine how many returns they must process. That's probably why they run so many sales. terrible company
I've noticed the same thing about the books being relisted--many, many times and even one that I returned that I believe was just relisted using a different stock #. I actually just ordered a few copies of X-factor #92 because from what I can tell they were newsstands but the sent me a different cover that was listed separately...I contacted them and they said that all of the stock is the cover that I received and the other cover listing was an error and they marked it as an error. It's been 2 weeks and the incorrect listing is still up.
One of the biggest issues with NewKadia is the false advertising. First, their grading is almost always off and I used to look for signed books at NewKadia and sometimes the book that they gave me wasn't signed at all. Also, they don't know which cover they are sending you. I would order the incentive variant cover at a premium price and they would give me the regular cover. It is frustrating ordering from them and after my prime membership expires I don't foresee going back to them.
If this keeps happening…look in the mirror, and quit buying online.
4 bucks a pop for those Greem Lanterns, good deal.
I've only ordered from them once: a black panther #3(1st tosin) right after it released. Luckily, it managed to reach me in nm condition(packaged securely enough if i remember correctly. Ended up grading a 9.8 from cgc.
Well consider yourself lucky that you got it in the condition you purchased it at 😂 In all seriousness, I would much rather hear about positive experiences like yours than some of the negative ones that more closely resemble my own experiences.
The absolute WORST grading and shipping from an online retailer. I ordered from them last week for the first time in almost a year because my last order was so bad. And this new order was just as terrible
I'm sorry to hear about that...it's really a shame. Hopefully you've returned less than 100 books and will be able to return those for a refund!
Good video, thank you for sharing. I looked at their site in the past and after a few minutes gave up and decided to go back to mycomicshop lol
Yeah, it's a clusterf*ck for sure. I could excuse the lack of user-friendliness if I could be sure of what I was getting, but unless it's a bunch of $2-3 books, I don't know that I could give them "real" money.
They have some of the worst grading and worst shipping I've ever experienced and I buy a lot of books online. If the book you bought isn't a full grade below what they say it is it will be by the time it gets to you because of their terrible packaging. That cardboard mailer you showed does absolutely nothing to protect the corners if there's any decent impact to the edges of the box, which happens all the time. Truly awful.
In all honesty, I've only had one instance of a package being *really* damaged--to the point where I had to file a claim the the USPS. That, of course, can all be chalked up to good luck on the shipping side of things, although I'd really like to have the books as advertised AND shipped more securely.
Nice haul there, but yeah, the grading seems a bit off on some of them. The one that would bother me the most is the Dark Water one and how it's cut in particular. It's nice to see the book though. I tend to agree with what you say about nostalgia and the return of things that we may have been into. I love the old stuff (Toys, comics, TV, movies, etc) and nothing can replace them, but I don't like when things get redone (mainly replacing and changing characters and such). It can be a hard call, but I think it would be nice just to go back and revisit the originals, just the way they were. And as far as spinoffs and multiple series pertaining to one character, or group. You just can't keep up, can't afford to. I feel that it takes away from the uniqueness, the specialness of the original series. I can think of an example where I actually appreciated it though. When I got into comics in the early 80's, Amazing Spider-Man was already out with hundreds and I could never afford the earliest issues. So I collected Peter Parker and got bundles of them for Birthdays and such, still having to get many back issues... but then came Web of Spider-Man #1! I was thrilled to buy a #1 issue of a Spider-Man series, but then McFarlane's Spider-man (which was very cool and I did collect), then Spider-man 2099, etc. It's just a bit much! This day there are countless Spider "such and such" comics and I'm just not going there. ~Eric
Yep, almost all of the oldest titles/characters have multiple series under the flagship title, let alone one-shots and different titles, but of course #1s send people to the stores so from a $ standpoint it makes sense for the publishers.
Great video, and a fair assessment of Newkadia. I think I've ordered from them 7 or 8 times getting over 20 books each time and didn't like their grading on 2 or 3 books. They're great for me but I have a different criteria than a lot of people. I'm in Canada, so the shipping is my first concern. Theirs is good but not great, you really have to spend over 100 bucks to make the shipping worth it. But a lot of online shops are way more for shipping or don't even ship to Canada. Secondly important for me is selection, I only want 80's and 90's back issues and they've got a good selection! Overall I like their shop and I'm generally happy with our transactions. :]
Thank you! I totally agree on the large selection--there are so many online "stores" that only have books from the last 5 years so having a deeper selection is a huge plus. You definitely hit the nail on the head mentioning that your criteria may be different than others' and everyone needs to experience it for themselves and stop taking another person's opinion as fact.
always thought Swamp Thing seemed cool but aside from of The Anatomy Lesson i haven't read much. would've liked to have heard more about the books like, who wrote and drew them or what they're about. i really enjoyed that show that got canceled, but again i don't know a lot about the character or how true to the comics it was.
I wasn't really into the character when I was first into comics--actually really didn't collect DC at all aside from a few random issues here and there that I can remember owning. I didn't watch the show because I like to let all of the episodes drop before starting...but then they announced that it was canceled before the season even ended which crushed my curiosity.
Dang. That 1 book looks to be a 5.0 at best. But personally with those first 3, I would weigh the light crease higher damage than the spine stress. But still probably all 3 in the VF range. I know it probably does not need to be said, but be careful with pressing, at times it can impact a professional grade and high end graders can always tell when a book has been pressed even when done properly.
Thanks for watching Chris! Yeah, I'm not sure I would ever attempt to clean/press high-end or older books myself and would most likely send them out to the real presser's presser. I'm just disappointed at how some retailers grade their offerings which I'm planning an entire series to cover!
