" she's smooth " :) :) :) great work
👍👍
You got your money out of them she needs re Shoeing
I was hoping for a little more 😊
You remind me of Fred Dibnah Paul. Fine towing rig there. Plenty of torque id imagine. I tow with a Disco 2 TD5 which is fine but lacking low end grunt
Thank you very much 😊 Fred was an old-school kinda guy, much like myself, hands-on and do it yourself. I have owned a Discovery 2 with the TD5 engine, nice little runabout but very underpowered in stock form, for what I normally have to tow. My truck has 450hp and around 900 lb-ft delivered at 1600rpm. This has let my tow 16000lb (7ton) at a steady 60mph in top gear without breaking a sweat 😎👌
Yes, you have the same demeanour and way of explaining things as Fred had. Those are impressive figures. The max weight we can legally tow here in Ireland is 3500kg including trailer weight
Excellent video, paul. Keep up the great work ☺️👍👌
Thanks Benny - glad you're enjoying the content 😊
Nice coat of paint come Summer itl be like new mines 1989 no common rail fuel or electronics for me. Best of luck
Ha .. yeah, a fresh coat of paint - be like 1988 again 😊 Modern electrics are not for me either. I'll stick to my older stuff, built tuff 👍
Hello Paul, Having had a succeession of 3Cs overthe last few decades, l am sseriously considering a prroject 7 forworking on a hilly farm. I love your videos and am gaining insights into how best to do the all important maintenance, plus what to watch out for. Bad luckon the broken rocker, but being a front line machine still,l guess these things will happen on an older machine. I understand that for your work the extra power of the turbo version really comes in handy. Having founda non turbo locally that looks to have been well looked after, with the machine to be worked in not terribly arduous conditions ( not pushing and shoving all the while) do you think the non turbo will be fine or would it bebest to hold out forthe turboed model ?
Hi Matthew, thanks for the support and your interest in our videos. A P7 3CX is a great piece of equipment to own and ran from 1988-1991. The turbo plus which is what I have was the most powerful and had extra equipment fitted to them by JCB than the standard turbo or non turbo 3CX, and I imagine will be very rare now in good working order. A non turbo 3CX should be fine, working around the farm, it will still push but not like the turbo model. Could be worth looking at, make sure the slew is not too badly worn or leaking oil around the slew area - this is an expensive job to repair. Pins and bushes are readily available and so are genuine hydraulic hoses from the dealer. Rams seals could be leaking, but seal kits or easy to obtain and not too painful to fit - with a good work bench and vice. Holding out for a good turbo model may take some time, and when one comes, a good one will soon sell! 👍
Thanks Paul. Much appreciated. From what you say the chances of finding a good all round turboed project 7 are not great. Really useful machines tend to get well used! Based on your advice l'll stick with the one that's local, as long as the slewing mechanism isn't too worn, that being your chief concern.
Great video once again
Glad you enjoyed it Mark 😊👍
@PSExcavationsLLC I did Great to see the 3cx up and running again
I hope you made sure that you had oil pressure when it kicked off
Yes we checked the engine oil pressure - good to point this out, thanks 👍
That’s a sight to see her up running
Thank you, seems like a long time waiting for me too 👌
"She's smooth".... that's class, you should have that sign written on the side of your machine.....😂😂
haha .. I didnt quite know what to think when I turned the key, and nothing happerned .. 🤔
Great job. She sounds very smooth. Ready for work 👍🏼👍🏼
Yeah, its a smooth running engine, time to put er to work! 👌👍
Finally, she's alive again and sounding good. Nice job Paul. That was a hell of a job.
It was a long job, but things are looking good for the 3CX's future 👌
Great video 🤗
Thanks Ian 👍
Thanks for a brilliant video. Best of luck from jp Ireland.
Thank you John - lets hope we can find some work to do with her now 👍
It’s 46 for my 8015
Correct. Your 801 is an excavator which will be 46 grade. A 3CX is a backhoe and should be 32 grade. 46 also works fine 😊
She’s a reet wee beauty
Thanks .. hopefully things can only get better 😎
I ve a 87 3CX LOOKING for an engine for her for around the farm yard.
I would try Vicary, they should be able to sort you out with a good used engine 👍
Glad to hear that machine again.
Im feeling it with ya Darren, been along time out of action 😊
Nice job. Well explained. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks James, we try to get it right, but we do miss little bits from time to time 😄
Iv got a 1994 525-67 loadall with the same engine with about 8000 hours on it. Starts up first turn and goes realy well. Can see why you like the older kit. Nice and simple to work on and repair if you do your own maintenance. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Hi Paul .. great to see some progress… What size front tires are you using .. ?. I can see they are over size …
Hi Kevin - its been slow, but we are moving in the right direction. Front tires are 365/70R18. Make a difference on soft ground too ! 👍👌
Well Paul , that’s the vid we’ve all been waiting for, brilliant! . Let’s see how she preforms . Great job 👍
Thanks Hartley. Just some fine tuning now, slow and steady for the first few jobs, break that new engine in! 💪👌
Damn glad to see t'grey cab goddess running again.👍🏻🍻
Not as happy as I am, Not good when you have to keep cross hiring equipment in to do your work, and the newer stuff is not quite that same - very happy to be back in 1988 😄😄
Runs like a mouse's heart, good un bout 32 grade hydraulic - always used 46 in mine, great videos, here's hoping she wears u out !!
Thanks Joe - Yeah, just thought that it was worth pointing out the different grades of hydraulic oils. Not a lot of difference really, but backhoes have always used 32, and excavators 46. 32 is quite clear, 46 looks for like engine oil 👌
Sounds nice can’t wait to see her in action top job 👍
Thanks Allan, been a lot of work but we're getting there. Nice to see you enjoying your Project7 ! 👌👍
How many Litres of hydrolic it's need sir?
From empty, 130L 👍
Nice to hear the old girl up and running again she definitely sounds well, looking forward to seeing her put to work in the near future. Keep up the excellent work, paul. 😊👌👍
Thanks Benny - as soon as we have anything to show, it'll be the next little episode 👌👍
Great to have the old girl back… Sometime they take a lot of bleeding up
Its great to have her up and running again. If your lift pump is working correctly, it shouldn't be too bad to blead up 👍
The perkins engine is the best.
Perkins are a great long lasting hard working engine. If the valve hadn't had fail when it did, this engine would have gone on much longer 💪👌
Hello ues we love the information provided and had a question about our 2013 6.6 with 366k all stock what would you recommend.
@@JesusLanderos-gm8nc Hi and thanks for the comment. Depends on what you are using your truck for, and with your truck having DPF and DEF things are not as straightforward as my older LBZ. The main drivetrain upgrades that I have made to my truck are removing, blanking off and mapping out the EGR, up pipes, downpipe and exhaust manifolds from PPE, removed the soot trap and fitted a 4inch exhaust to help reduce heat. Built trans good for 600hp with trans oil cooler from PPE. Remapped engine with 450hp, remapped trans shift points and TCC lock up points - that can be done with EFI Live, banana engine oil pan, engine driven air compressor, replaced crank harmonic balancer, transfer rub kit, this may not be required on your truck?Timbrans on the rear suspension - these really help with a heavy trailer or RV and are maintenance free(unlike an air suspension system) 18k lb fifth wheel, 55gal aux fuel tank - really helps with the longer road trips. Regular maintenance is carried out using genuine filters and synthetic oils. Truck is driven sympathetically, not over heated and not revving the engine much above 2k rpm. In the winter, the block heater is plugged in. Hope this helps a little 👍
Nicely put together vid , I think a lot of people don’t realize how much effort goes into getting a few minutes of footage together, keep up your hard work, we really appreciate it. Happy New Year to you all , and hope 2025 is a prosperous for you !
Thank Hartley .. a lot of effort goes into each video, its hard to get the camara into the place where you're working, or the close up shots when you have your hands in an engine or some other tight place - but we do our best for all the people that follow us and have an interest in what we are doing with our classic equipment. Hope you enjoyed the holidays and that 2025 is going to be a good year for all ! 😊👍
I’ve been looking forward to these vids on the new engine replacement, I think you will be pleased with the results, it’s one of those jobs that’s really satisfying when done and working right , reckon you are doing a great job . Hopefully your good lady wasn’t too annoyed for long , great clip. Think you may have to take her out to make up ! “ JCB factory “ 👍😁
haha .. Yeah - Ill think of something. That 4L Perkins in that Project 7 3CX is a tight fit and could have been designed better by JCB im sure of it, or maybe they thought that the engine would never come out once it was fitted? So after removing the turbo and intake horn, lower the engine into place rear first-I think I will remember this should I find myself in this position again .. haha 😄😄 A JCB factory tour would be great for her, we were in the Caterpillar visiter center in Peoria a few weeks ago, I think she enjoyed that 😊👌
Hope it still has that bark to it! So much better than modern crap.
I hope so too. Yeah - I agree with you about the modern crap, classic all the way 💪👌👍
I’m looking forward to see the old girl in action with her new heart
👍👍
@ it’s maybe just me but I’m noticing that the newer machines are a bit cheaper quality compared to the older stuff
When older stuff was made, it was made to do the job - and to do it anywhere and for a long time trouble free. The new stuff is made on a budget, it may look good when new, but the paint soon starts to fall off, the fancy electrics start to give problems and are not easy machines to work on - parts are expensive too!
Love your videos. I have gray cab 1989 3cx in denmark, 17300hours on her💪🏼 keep it up!👌
Wow .. over 17000 hrs, have you had to do much maintainance work over the years ?
Great video. may I suggest that you oil the turbo before starting the engine as even the short time before oil is delivered can cause damage to the turbo, I believe that you can do this through the oil delivery pipe.
Personally I rebuilt My own
Itl be some engine but it serves you well thank god
I hope so, just need to get it out working so I earn the money back .. 😊
I don't see the need for more power, or even a turbo, on a 3CX. The hydraulic pump is fast enough, even at 1200 rpm. Any faster and you will be slinging a full ditching bucket much too fast. Nice to know what caused the smoke problems in the first place. Do any of your pivot points require line boring, I think you have the old type slew hydraulics..
Some people are happy with low power and without the turbo charged engine, but for many people, driving a backhoe on the road, up steep hills, or dozing on site, having that extra power makes all the difference. Depends what you do with the machine I guess, but when all newer machines are turbo charged, the slower, under powered machine has no work. Working the hydraulics only, rpm will be around 1100-1600 - depends on the work load. Iv had the slew replaced, pot seals, king post rack and gear. As for the rest of the pivots, new pins and bushes was all it needed. Regular greasing to keep wear as low as possible 👍
@@PSExcavationsLLC I look forward to seeing how you reduces the play in the steering track rod ends, on you high speed 3cx..!
The steering track rod ends have replaceable pins and bushes, I have replaced all these in the past and I have no play in my steering linkages. The top speed on the road will be the same at around 25-26 mph, hopefully it will be a little better on the hills and when pushing with the front end on site. My right foot will still regulate the power 😊👍
Nice job .. who did your rebuild ..
Thanks Kevin .. I sent it to Timik in Southampton, the service was a little disappointing and they didnt do what I asked them to do. The engine is now being worked on and fine tuning by myself. Its not bad, but can be better 👌
👍🏼👍🏼
Well done. Almost there to see the old girl working again. That engine got a really nice rebuild.
Thanks .. still fine tuning the engine, its good, but im not happy yet! 👌👍
Mission, but you are so close
Thanks Brian 👍
I built mine , that’s expensive the way you got yours done.
I wanted to build it myself too, but I was too busy at the time and needed the engine back in the machine as I was cross hiring equipment in for jobs at great expence. It was cheaper for me to send it out, but I really wanted to do it, video it, and make one great high hp Perkins, built by me! Im still working on the fine tuning, which I will go through when Im done 👌💪👍
Fantastic video.from jp South Ireland.
Thanks John .. 👌👍
What an excellent surprise paul to see the engine return completely rebuilt. Hopefully, the power upgrade will make a noticeable difference to the performance of the machine. I'm definitely looking forward to watching the next instalment on hearing the mighty perkins running again. Keep up the excellent work, pal 😊👍
Thanks Benny, still fine tuning. A lot of reading and looking at what other people have done with this engine in different vehicles all over the world 👌
👍vid I wish my black cab had that phaser engine in it can't wait to hear your thoughts on the extra HP although my Perkins 4236 is underpowered it is great on fuel and has been very reliable Paul
The Phaser is a great engine, used in many different vehicles all over the world too. Basiclly .... the turbo engine has oil sprayed up into the inside of the pistons to help with cooling, but for the extra power, its basiclly a different injector pump, different turbo and injectors. An intercooler would help too, air to water would be the best type for space saving and effect. I will show the end result .. when Iv worked out what works best 💪👌👍
Paul, Claire, I love your antics working together but Claire's no doubt logged the misdemeanour for the next "talk". 😜😄 For wire protection/organisation I've had good luck using self amalgamating rubber tape. It saves getting scratches from cut zipties. Have a good'un.👍🏻
Iv had a look at the self amalgamating tape, I will try it!! Thanks for the advice 👍
I hope you get many more years of service from in now. Its a lovely example of a grey cab. Well worth the investment in the rebuild. You know what you have now rather than buying an unknown second hand machine which often come with plenty of their own problems.
Thank you very much! I would like to think that this 3CX will get better with each year, until I really cant improve it any further. The cab is becoming higher on the list - Cab full referb is coming .. 👌👍
