WTF IS APERTURE?! The F.number on your camera explained
The F. number on your screen represents what you'll have perhaps heard referred to as the Aperture.
Easy trick is to think of the F as standing for 'field' or focus
Don't worry about the science of why. Just understand what setting to choose:
The lower the number the smaller the focus area is, or the shallower the 'depth of field' (a term used by videographers and photographers)
Low F.numbers like f1.8 are great for close up detail shots
Higher numbers like f8 are good for landscapes
The Aperture is key in choosing the creative look and feel of a shot.
Notes:
Some lenses only start at f4
Watch out for this:
The lower the number, the smaller the window for movement, so if you are filming at f1.8 and a person moves (even by a few millimetres) you could find the focal point is no longer on the eyes but on the nose.
Play around with the F.number on your camera and see what look and feel you can create.

RECORD SETTINGS FOR FILMING VIDEO - the shutter speed
Переглядів 8010 місяців тому
When it comes to video people often ask 'what should my shutter speed setting be?' Or sometimes, people even ask what the shutter speed even is! The shutter speed in video is important because it determines how motion is captured and how that translates when you playback your video. I won't go into the science of how, I don't do that. Technical analysis is creative paralysis. I don't need to kn...

You set the stage with an intriguing opening shot, manage to create an atmosphere and built a story in only a handful of shots. That is brilliant. I must learn this. I have played this video several times to take all the details and everything(!) in. Big shout-out from Denmark. /Per
Ah thank you!! So glad you got so much out of it!! Head over to Instagram if you haven’t already - I post mostly on there (need to get better on here!) and have a few workshops etc and more online courses I run.
I have spend so much time and money on technique and gear and not having the results I envisioned. I have not considered or given much thought to the pre-planning. Not until now. It seems so obvious and yet I left it out. Appreciated Ellie. Enjoying your filmmakin and "OM videos". Huge thumbs up. /Per (Denmark)
Just seen your two videos about Kevin Bacon's recovery. My daughter's dog Olive (Cavapoo) had the same surgery four days ago so it is all still a bit raw for her. found your recovery videos to be very helpful and encouraging about the time scales that can be involved. Did you make any further video's about Kevin's progress? I could only find two. Many thanks.
I love red paddle co paddle board but its too expensive… I can’t afford it.. just love watching people who use Red paddle board..😢😢😢
That was fun to watch. Thank you.
When he first got on it was killing me . He was stiffer than that board 😂
the suspense! lol
im in the beggining of this, he had surgery 4 days ago... thanks for sharing your experience
Wishing you all the best for a positive recovery! 🙏🏼
How has Kevin been since this surgery?
Thank you for posting this. I am living this now with my pup. So traumatic. Kevin is so cute.
It is traumatic, sending strength to you both!! Daily physio is key and eventually hydrotherapy. Kevin does that once a month even now! He has had two surgeries though sadly, but hopefully no more!
Fosgate?
i wonder how little kevin bacon is doing currently
Going thru this with my pup now. Hydro therapy works wonders.
My dachshund was just discharged from surgery for IVDD. Around how long did it take Kevin to make a full recovery? Would greatly appreciate the insight
Awesome am paddling the river seven in may 2024 been training on Windermere and Buttermere am proper looking forward to it xx
Love this! 🙌🏽
Last Wednesday my 8 year old terrier mix 2 compressed disks C4 and C5. Still in the hospital. Prayers please 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sending you all the love and prayers for his recovery! Daily physio exercises and hydrotherapy did amazing things for Kevin 🤞🏼🤍
@EllieActionFilms Thank you so much! She is getting better everyday! 🙏🙏🙏
Looks very dirty water 😂😂
Board size ?
found this very helpful and encouraging thank you. Our Mabel had surgery yesterday and its all overwhelming. hoping that Kevin Bacon is fully recovered now. xx
Such a great message! It's so important to see people weigh risks and make sensible decisions, you can still have a great time even if it's not doing exactly what you'd planned, you didn't just give up entirely and say "Argh, it's not meant to be, we'll go home instead" you looked at the conditions you came to the safest conclusion and you changed your itinerary.
Thanks Joy! I still need to upload part two of this which included a lot of gruelling canals 🤣 thanks for the kind comment and merry Xmas
Hello. Our Dachshund just had spinal surgery Monday just gone. We saw your video. How is Kevin Bacon doing since this video?
Hey! He was doing really well but had another episode, stage 3 so not as bad and was up walking a lot sooner. I cannot recommend hydrotherapy and physio enough and just making sure they don’t jump up/down anything when recovered - easier said than done I know!! Wishing yours all the best with recovery 🤍
Thanks for coming back to me. I'm sorry to hear KB had another episode. I hope he is OK and keeping outta trouble. Thanks again.
Can you share what’s the jacket that you wear ~12:00?
My mini dachshund Bella also just had an ivdd surgery I am DIY making a wheelchair for her ueing PVC pipe
My dog had surgery in 10 days of paralysis and she’s on her 3rd week post exercises and yesterday she started to move her tail and her left leg
Hi just curious as to how his recovery is now a year later? We just had our 5 year old dacsund diagnosed and deciding on surgery at the moment
“Wrong river” - classic! What happened to part 2, did you sack it off?
That's not Welshpool it's Crewgreen
Welldone Lynne! You win the prize for most observant viewer! We recce’d Welshpool and then went down to crewgreen. But we’ll done for spotting. We don’t put everything in every video because otherwise they would be hours long! We decided the safety message here was probably more important than what location is what.
I often paddle around this area, absolutely stunning. Exploring the caves is an amazing experience.
nice video, thanks for sharing. Just one word of caution, may be on the risky side taking water from the river to cook, Check "Is my river fit to play in" for a very detailed (and shocking) map of how much sewage is damp into each river. It is also very useful to choose places which are less affected.
Did he have deep pain sensation after his surgery?
I’m not sure they tested for that soon after surgery as he was on so many drugs for so many weeks there’s no way really to tell. He was stage 4 when he went in and had some pain sensation in his rear legs - so wasn’t grade 5. Hope that helps 🤍
@@Elliecartwright_filmmaker thanks for replying! I’m glad you’re dog is doing so well. My dog was grade 4 as well and had some deep pain sensation before the surgery but now has nothing at all. It’s been 2 weeks since the surgery now
@@kristenr2853 oh it’s so so stressful, just keep the physio exercises and if you can get him some laser therapy? It’s so so hard so my heart goes out to you
Thanks for sharing your journey. This gives me hope. Our Dachshund had spinal surgery a week ago and he can stand now but this gives me encouragement that with hard work he will eventually walk.
Ah I’m so glad this has helped you! I’m sure he’ll be walking again in no time, it’s a fairly long road but consistent physio, hydro, fish oil supplements and keeping them nice and slim to help recovery speed are my top tips!!
Really fun video. Always better safe then sorry when working with moving water! Looking forward to part 2. Cheers!
How about the voyager 12.6? Do you like it more than the sport 11.3 model that you use in other videos? I would like to know which of the two boards is faster and more stable between the 12.6 and 11.3 vayager. Thank you very much.
Hi Pablo, the fastest board is the 13’2 Voyager board. All of the red boards I’ve found to be extremely stable. The 13’2 though is narrower at 30” and feels slightly less stable at first but it’s design means it’s still super stable. I haven’t fallen in from it! Both the Sport and the 12’6 voyager are 32 inches wide so feel more stable. The voyagers are all faster due to the v-shape on the hull. But it depends what you want it for. I ended up choosing to keep the sport because it’s a bit smaller and perfect for the kind of river outings I like to do. Can still be used for mini adventures. If you want to go adventuring with the sup, long distance paddling and camp outs etc defo go for the voyager. Hope that helps!
@@Elliecartwright_filmmaker Thank you very much for your help, you are very kind. My idea is to buy the Voyager 12.6 model from 2022 that is about to go on sale, the fear I have is that it would be an excessively slow board. I have looked at the Voyager 13.2 and I like it a lot… the problem is that I have never done paddle surfing, and my girlfriend would also use it and she has little balance. We have no experience either. I've been watching your videos for months and I'm looking forward to it going on sale to the board ... only sometimes I wonder if the 12.6 model is too slow. The idea is to make 1-day trips in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast. Thank you very much for your help. All the best! EDIT: sorry for my English
@@PRS792 the 12’6 is definitely not a slow board at all! It’s the second fastest in their range. And it’s the same width as the lower model boards so has the same stability. It’s a great choice. You mentioned Paddle ‘surfing’ though - is that on the sea? Like you want to catch waves and surf? If so you’d need a specific small board for that called the Whip. Another option for you and your girlfriend to enjoy sup together could be the 15’ voyager tandem!
@@Elliecartwright_filmmaker Thank you very much Ellie for your advice and taking the time to help me. Definitely and if you say that it is not a slow board I think I will buy the voyager of 12.6. I'm not interested in catching waves or surfing, just cruising near the coast. Travel quietly taking photos, eating in small coves and things like that. I was looking at the tandem model and I think I could buy it in the future, in a few years. But my budget is limited so I was afraid of not making the right choice. I read many comments from people always recommending the 13.2 model over the 12.6 ... but if it is not a slow model, it is more stable and also works better in windy situations or the sea a bit rough ... .definitely I stay with Voyager 12.6. Thank you very much for everything, keep uploading videos that are very entertaining and you have a fabulous channel, congratulations and thank you very much once again. A greeting from Spain.
I’m hooked on your videos! Makes me want to get started on paddle boarding!
Great video, great smile and great work, love to see the interest in SUP! I do mostly near some beach, in the south of Portugal, but those rivers and canals seem very fun! Keep on the good work!
Can you please update us on Kevin’s recovery? Have one in surgery for this as I type this. Looking for inspiration and tips on recovery. Thanks for the video and hope Kevin is doing well.
Hey! It’s been a very long process honestly and he’s had a few set backs. Hydrotherapy has been game changing! But sadly I don’t think he’ll ever be how he was before. We have to watch him a lot, he often gets muscle soreness and back spasms from tension in his back. But we know what to look out for now! The key for me is hydro, some laser, cod liver oil, and acupuncture (when he’s a bit sore) and making sure he keeps his weight down!
Honestly just make sure you give time to his recovery and all the help with physio and I’m sure yours will be absolutely fine. Kevin had grade 4 IVDD which is high, I think hence him not being back to normal. But for a lot of dogs I think they make full recoveries!
Lovely, enthusiastic and entertaining videos. I just bought the same board to replace my 2020 13"2 Voyager. I will hit the water during the weekend.
Absolutely enjoying watching your sup adventures . You make it look so EASY.
Any chance you could do a year on recovery update?
I’ve been meaning to! So I will get round to it! It’s been a journey that’s for sure!
@@Elliecartwright_filmmaker Thatd be great! Has be managed to make it back to pre surgery mobility? :)
I just realised that Chris is that Dr from the TV 😂
Why do you guys opt for the waist leash? QR is sensible I guess but just interested to know.
Hi Rupert, after falling in the river in January I did some much needed research into water safety. QR is essential on rivers and lakes due to the fact that if you fall in your leash could become wrapped around debris or trees. Having experienced this in ice cold water - the speed of the flow can make it extremely difficult to reach your ankle so a leash around the waist can save your life 👍🏻 Knowing where you’re paddling and what the best gear is for it (for example non-coiled leashes on the sea) is super important for making sure you’re confident in all situations! Thanks for the comment 👏 I may do a video explaining my kit! Ellie
Ok. Thanks for replying. I wasn’t questioning the leash as such but the waist vs ankle. Given the cost of these things alone, it’s necessary to tie them to something haha!! I guess the QR is simply easier on the waist if needed too and less chance of annoyance under-foot too… thanks for the tip.
@@rupertmarlow4668 yeah essentially the waist access and quick release element means if you’re in difficulty you can release more quickly and easily. There is equally an argument for not having a leash at all on a river because the risk of getting it caught is high. You can get some pretty cheap but effective ones just online. 👍🏻
Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind when kitting out! Did you get my cheeky IG message? I just thought I’d ask!
Love it

What a great blog, you guys make it so much fun. I can’t help but smile , I feel like you are dragging me along in this adventure. 😊
Ah thanks so much!! New video to come soon…!
Wow looks stunning here need to get my paddle board/kayak over to Wales at some point! 😍
Take a peek on Amazon for some good Dive Boots, hard bottom kinds. They are a nice neoprene zip up, keeps your feet completely warm while paddleboarding in cold water! :) Loved the vid, too!
Flat gear straps are retarded, ditched mine after one use.
Nice
Hi! Nice video! I like this stone shores, where is it? (sorry for my english, have i made any mistake)
